Video rec lag - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, no matter witch rom I use the HD recording turns up with lags. What I'm doing wrong?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Use faster card (class 6 and up) and don't expect miracles if you are trying to record a video in poor light.

Format your sd as fat32.

every sdcard is formatted in fat32.

By lag, do you mean dropped frames?
I use a miui build now since I had dropped frames using sense builds.
Seems that the miui builds are a bit better.

Not really. Cards 1gb or lower have a default formatting as FAT rather than FAT32.
@ the OP: as tkolev nentioned, class 6 or above should be used; specifically if recording 720p and 1080p(on newer devices) a class 10 rated micro sdhc should be used.
If your card dies not have a classification rating or is class 2 or 4, it simply does not have the sustained IO write speed capable to prevent 'lag' (data cacheing then transferrance to the sd, the buffer becomes full and has to pause until the data in the buffer can be written and removed, like a game of catch-up).
So, either lower the video quality level (to decrease the amount of data that needs to be written) or invest in a higher class microsd (they're fairly cheap these days.. I got a 16gb class 10 by adata for $23)

I had recoding lag but once reformatted the card no lag what's so ever (720p).

I had a similar issue that turned out to be a video editing app that I download from the market. Once removed, and a restart completed, all has been fine since.

You need to reformat your SD card as it is either corrupt or uses too small sectors - you should use 32k sized sectors;
use the formatter from here to ensure it's properly formatted;

[Q] Why class 6 SD card?

Hi all,
I've read in a few places that if you want to run apps from your SD card that you should have a class 6 SD card. Can anyone explain why this is? I've currently got the one that came with the phone, which is class 2. Just want to understand why I need it before splashing out the cash
Thanks
It's all about speed. Class 6 is faster than Class 4 is faster than Class 2. If you are happy with the performance with your Class 2 card, no need to splash out the cash.
yeah its just about speed, the higher the class the faster the r/w speed, you dont really need a class 6 these days tho, maybe in the old days of the g1/hero but not now
There's quite a bit of discussion on this and I'm honestly quite confused over this as well.
The higher classes just means faster write speeds but same read speeds. Certainly, this shouldn't affect the performance of apps that are installed on the card; unless the card is being used for swap memory.
Anyway, I've heard some users with 32GB microSD card (only available in class 2) using app2sd with no ill-effects. I've recently purchased one myself and will be swapping it out later tonight.
newbie on Android here.....may I ask....Im currently using a 16Gb mem card....If I change it to a 32Gb, what are the files that I need to copy to the new card, so that the apps/games currently installed will still run? I noticed there are so many folders inside my memory card now.....which one should I transfer to my new card? Or should I need to re-install the apps?
thanks..

are you using apps2sd? or just running a stock like rom?
9 out of 10 users on this website would not be able to tell the difference in speed by running apps on a class 4 or class 6 cards.

Before the usual flamers get to write on this topic to say high-class cards are useless, it really comes down I think to the time you have available to wait for USB transfers. On a class 2 it takes AGES. I bought a class10 16gb and it's an absolute life changer (i do have a lot of public transport so I make heavy use of my phone as a video player)

Another reason to have a class 4 or faster card in the phone is to have reliable 720p 25fps video recording. On my Class 2 with a2sd+ recording stutters.
thanks for the responses. from what i read previously, it talked about class 6 cards being less likely to be unmounted and causing problems to running applications. does this mean anything to anyone?!

This is the reason when I eventually get the money I'll be getting a 16GB class 4 or 6 card. At the moment 720p is fairly pointless to me since I can't get smooth recordings with my SD card.
Have no issues with my 16Gb Class-2 sdcard. R/W speed enough to handle 720p recording and rockplayer playing avis perfectly.

Are you running A2SD or a2sd+ on your phone? If not, that may be the reason.
The more apps and widgets and stuff is moved to the sd, the more r/w-access happens to the card, which has serious impact on video recording. I really wish the internal memory of the Desire wasn't so small. What the heck did HTC think by putting only 560 MByte internal storage into their android flagship? The SGS has 5 GiBytes!

Incorrect!
The class of the card doesn't tell you the speed of a card - it tells you the *minimum* sustained write speed on a card which is completely unfragmented
A good quality class 2 card can and often will be faster than a poor quality class 6 card.
The two Sandisk Class 2 card I use both write at around 7.5mb/s, which is faster than the class 6 minimums.

Dave

That's interesting info! Would explain why I have far fewer problems than most people report with 720p recording onto my class2 card.
So the real answer is: Benchmark your write speed before making any big purchasing decisions on SD cards.

so a class 4 good enough for 720p? i have a class 2 right now and the recording is just horrible.. i thought that my phone was broken and have changed many custom roms
Bought a C6 16gb to replace C2 4Gb - definitely faster as USB drive - both Sandisk

Do I really need anything higher than a Class 2 microsd?

Thinking about upgrading to a 16gb sd card. I noticed that a class 2 goes for like 19 bucks while anything with a higher class is 30 bucks or more. Will I really see a perfromance boost if I get a class 4 or 10? If so, what will increase? Will photos load faster? Will the videos I record in 720p have a faster playback? Etc. What takes advantage of the class speeds?
Thanks for any input guys!

If anything, for video playback the faster class sd's will/should eliminate stuttering issues etc.
Here's a good breakdown of the diffs: http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/speed_class/
I would say given the lack of a2ext on this phone there really isn't a need for anything higher than a class 2 on this phone. The only things it would help with are:
1. If you use linux swap (stores the cache on the sdcard)
2. If you've moved your dalvik to the sdcard
3. If you use enomthers rom which has a2ext/linux swap
4. Video playback/recording (maybe)
5. File transfers. Large files and sdcard backups will be quicker
That's really all and if you don't use most of that stuff then I'd just stick with a class 2 and suffer the slower transfer rates. You should be fine with video, I've used a class 2 and 6 - video was the same as far as I could tell but certain videos (movies) might shutter a bit with the class 2, I never tested that aspect.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Also note, the class is simply indicative of the minimum write speed, not read speed. Things like playback and load times are not affected that much (though things like 720p video recording could theoretically perform better).
Also, because the class is the minimum speed, a lot of the time the higher quality class 2 cards may still achieve class 4 of class 6 write speeds.
Ahh, I see. Thanks for the info guys!
Does anyone know the common write speed of the stock 8gb card?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I believe the stock card is class 4 so the minimum it should be able to write is 4 mb/s. Not every card is created equal. If you search on google you can find apps that help you test the read/write speed of the card.
I'm pretty sure my stock card was a class 2. I now have a 16gb class 2 card, and it seems to do everything fine... including video recording.
The stock card in my G2 was a Class 2, though for my wife's MyTouch 4G (bought on the same day) she got a Class 4.
When I had my G1 I switched from a Class 2 to a Class 6, my picture taking got noticeably faster, I used that same Class 6 in my G2 so I can't really compare it to anything there.
My stock card was a SanDisk, and they only make Class 2 cards. I use my Class 6 card in the hopes that more the Android modders sees the sense in having a /system/sd folder leading to an ext partition.

may be your memory card carry viruses so try to format it and then format your cell phone also(reset configuration with erase memory card)....may be this could solve your problem...
I see that you guys all use a class 10 card. Is there really a big difference compared to lower class cards?
My phone worked smooth enough with the stock 8GB class 2 card, and my current Transcend class 4 16GB doesn't harm the phone's performance.
class 4 is enough, on phone you will not see any DIFRENCE.
When you connect your phone to PC over USB and conect it to mass storage, you will see then POWER OF CLASS 10. faster uploading to PC, and faster dowloading from PC.
On phone class 10 and class 4 are the SAME.
Well, I noticed a difference and prefer the class 10 all the way.

Hi hi Ok I have a problem and hoping someone can help...
I purchaced a kingston 32GB class 10 memory card and plagued with issues since having it.
My setup is...
Arc LT15
.42 Firmware
Advanced stock kernel
32GB class 10 memory card
Now the problem is images and videos and apps.
Apps...
They keep ramdom uninstalling if they are stored on the memory card
Videos/pictures
Any I have taken since installing the card become corrupted. Even screenshots.
IE I took a screenshot and it displayed on the phone, I went to gallary and viewed it fine.
Came to home screen and back to gallery still fine.
Left some time went to gallary and corrupt.
Cannot be viewed even by PC
This also happened to videos.
I had this problem so installed a totally fresh se rom updated via SEUS (I think)
Cleared dalvik cache and user cache etc manually installed the apps from the card etc etc used no backups apart from contacts backup
Everything was totally clean.
Even my language from swiftkey keyboard app keeps deleting randomly :/
Still getting the issue :/ Is there anything i'm missing?
Thanks,
Jinx13
Hey guys... read cearfully!
The class 10 approx parameters are... Read- 22 mb/s write 10 mb/s
The class 4 are Read 10 mb/s Write 4 mb/s...
So why your phones working bad with class 10?
Because those are linear read-write speeds...and you are using it only while USB connection by moovie transfer or watching... What is the rest card usage?
It is random read-write or seqental read-write used by yor apk's or fo example thumbs of stock gallery.
These speeds are for class 10 - 0.08 mb/s
class 4 - 0.8 mb/s
See the difference now? So class 10 is good for DSLR cameras or mediaplayers etc. Class 4 perfect for phone. Mine 32gb class 4 just flying!!!!!
So your saying 32GB class 10 is not supported fully by the ARC?
Jinx13
I don't get you.
SD speedtest apps give me ~10MB/s write and 20+MB/s read, so it's supported.
Also it feels faster than a class 4 (class 4 vs class 10 was tested in my X10, but Arc is even faster)
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
It is linear speeds...like you are reading or writing moovie or some one solid big file...
But the system uses random read of small files... And there class 10 looses. On class 4 compared to class 10 in gallery 1000+ photo thumbnails appears in seconds.
Try crystall disc mark software to test your card on PC and you will see. Test config is 5 tests at 100mb...pay attention at 4K and 4Kq32 speeds. At class 10 they are 0.04-0.08...
Ah
Anyways, I'm happy with my 32GB class 10
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
Ofcourse you are! I just wanted to make it clear for those who says that it is lagy or like that...
But it isn't laggy with the class 10 when you have a good sd card.
The cheap Kingston 16GB class 10 from eBay lagged often in Astro, but no problems with my Patriot 32GB class 10 sd card

Yep! Patriot is one of that card of class 10 that gives you a great performance in any type of R/W. There is a post here, on XDA...there said that patriot is the best card, so my answer is not for you man)))))
About sd apps loss you shold check your app wich provides managment of apps to sd card - links2sd or what it is... the promlem is not in the card.
Or check the sd if it corrupts files.

I bought a Kingston 16GB class 10 - Full of problems (returned)
Then a Kingston 32GB class 4 - better results but not that speedy
Now I found for 46euros here in Greece a Samsung 32GB class 10 so I said I have to try this.. and voila! The card is perfect, no lags! The phone is super speedy now!
So I guess it have to do with the cards not the brand.. if you re lucky you will end up with a good card.

[Q] Whats the best SD card to use with an SD ext partition?

Hi,
Im currently using sebastians rom on my htc desire. Everone says it runs super smooth, but im having huge lags. I thought it was the rom, so i tried cool3ds room, which was said to be smooth aswell. Also with this rom, some huge lags.
Both roms use an sd ext partition to store a part of the rom. It got me thinking, could it be my sd card being too slow? I dont know what kinda sd card i have, since i got no knowledge about sd cards whatsoever.
Could these huge lags be causes by my sd card? If so, what sd card would you guys recommend to buy, for maximum performance?
Thanks in advance!
So we learnt what - that smooth and stable terms should be taken with a grain of salt here.
If you don't don't know what sd card you have, I think it is safe to assume that you have a default Samsung class 2 card, which is too slow for anything. Pull out your card and see what number is inside the small circle written on it.

Youre right, I indeed do have a Samsung class 2 SD card. Could this really be causing the lags in the rom?
It's not that Im allways experiencing lags, sometimes the rom is super smooth and other times it's soooo slow. For example, when I click the settings icon, it takes 3-4 second before it actually enters the settings menu, and when I scroll between my homescreens, it freezes for 1-2 seconds.
Could a class 6 SD card be a solution? Is class 6 the best to use? I saw some class 10 sd cards around, arent they faster than class 6?
I have a class 4 Sandisk 32gb and seems to work fine
Why not just go for a class 10 card? I got myself a Lexar 32GB from Amazon and every Runny rom is super smooth
Class 10 SD cards are not always recognized by the Desire. So to be sure, one should use a Class 4 -6 SD card. Especially Class 6 works well for all 'technologies' (even DATA2SD).
Is there a noticeable difference between class 6 and 10 when using e.g a runnymede rom? If so, which microsd class 10 cards are confirmed working on the htc desire?

I did not notice any lags with my Class 6 SD card (in AOSP roms). Never heard / read about anyone who had speed problem with a good Class 6 SD card when using Sense roms.
So in theory Class 10 SD card should work more than ever without a lag. But in practice Class 10 SD cards cause some lags. Don't know why, maybe their are too fast (ATTENTION: dangerous superficial knowledge).

Remember that you also move apps to the SD card, either "android way" or to a partition in the SD card and that needs fastest card you can.
