I am using the original micro-usb-b charger that came with the phone.
I think I accidentally damaged the charger since pin #4 is missing (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro-USB#Physical_appearance).
Although the charger works fine I suspect that I might be damaging the phone by using it.
Should I continue using the charger or should I buy a new one?
Thanks in advance

Micro USB Pinout
Like mini USB, micro USB also used a five-pin connector. Unlike mini USB, the fourth pin is actually used to differentiate between an A and a B plug. The pin assignments are exactly the same as mini USB, except that for a micro A plug the fourth pin is tied to ground, and micro B the fourth pin remains unused.

So I don't think you're damaging your phone. I haven't checked, but it might be the way the stock charger is designed.

I have a Tilt 2, had it since last March. I've had to have it replaced twice already due to the USB jack getting to the point where it no longer functions except to charge, it won't connect via cable to the pc, nor will it work with the multi-function adapter provided at purchase by HTC.
Is it dangerous/wrong to use after-market chargers/adapters/standard usb cables with the phone??? Am I damaging the usb port by using car chargers/wall chargers, etc that I got from ebay, or is this just a matter of bad design?
It isn't. It looks different, but its not. I believe its ONLY notched like that because not only is that port a USB port, but it also has a few extra 'wires' for connecting a headset to it. (via the HTC adapter)
Of course, the corporate answer is.. Yes using a non HTC Power Adapter could damage your TP2. But unofficially, I doubt it.
I've stopped buying over priced chargers for my phones and will by any Mini-USB charge that I can find. Most will work. The voltage does not matter anymore since USB is a set standard, and any modification to the voltage would not comply to the USB standard, and it wouldn't be USB then.
I've had the same issue with my TP2 (and with the HTC Wing I had before). Check the power adapters itself. I have a RAZR charger I've been using for years, and I think the plug itself has just about had it.
Also take some canned air to the USB port on the phone (while it is powered off and battery removed) and try to remove debris from the USB port. The minuscule little piece of dust could cause a bad connection. Electronic cleaner works better at this. (its LIKE canned air but contains alcohol-based cleaner in the "air". It's available at Radio Shack.) This fixed the problem I was having with my Wing.
And finally, it may just be time for a new phone. The ports just plain wear out from daily plugging and unplugging that adapter in. One slight bend and the port is all out of alignment.. (does it wiggle instead of being a firm connection when you plug in the charger?)
This is why I am waiting for the day these induction charges are standard in phones.. No more power adapters!
I just use a normal USB plug for mine. I don't even fool with the one it came with so I don't get that one confuse with something else. They only notched it like that to make a buck, I would guess.
If you are trying to use Mini USB headphone, only the ones made by HTC will work as it has 11 pins. Standard Mini USB has only 5 pins.
Hi guys
I bought a charger (Sony/Ericsson) for my car that has given some trouble. For some reason my Galaxy Nexus switches off when I try to charge it using my new car charger. The same happens if I use the same cable from my laptop.
A colleague can use the cable to charge but his phone (Galaxy S II) is no longer recognized by his PC (his own cable works fine). I can charge using his cable without any problems.
Another colleague started talking about different cable versions... but really... it doesn't make sense to me.
I have had the same problem with the original cable that came with the charger and with a new cable I bought as I assumed the original one was broken.
Does anyone here have any specific usb/micro usb knowledge and can tell me if there's anything special I should look for when getting a(nother) new car charger/cable?
Thanks in advance

I know one can short a USB port and cause a computer to reboot on the spot as if it lost power. It's done by inserting like a key so that the key connects the 5v + and ground contacts within a USB port. Maybe that's what's going on here- the way the cable is made, the micro USB part makes contact with all the pins, but also inadvertently connects the two for power?

I tried taking my normal PC cable to the car and it worked like a charm. So I guess I must have gotten hold of two (!) flawed cables... what's the odds?
Thanks
I'm looking for a cover with microsd slot but I haven't found nothing. So I want to know if there are problem to make a thing like this or nobody hasn't thinked about it. I think that make it is possible because there are some OTG that read microsd(I have it) but with it I can't charge the phone and I'm afraid of break it when it is in my pants. I've thinked to make a cover with microsd slot and external battery(like the image below), it is possible?
The pin you marked with <?> is the key to USB OTG. In order for your stick/card to work, you'd have to connect that pin to ground. Then, when you wanna charge/access the phone (from a computer), you'd need to disconnect that pin.
The main problem that I see is that there isn't enough space between the original cover and the phone/battery. The second problem is that our beloved Nexus is old and many thinkers moved away to newer devices. And, to access the USB port internally, you'd have to open the phone, which would void the warranty (if the phone still has one).
PS: Still remembering those kind of math exercises from high-school
Why i need to disconnect the key to USB OTG when it is charging? If I'm right to charge the phone we only use the 5v and ground pin. I've thinked about create a cover like the picture below with the micro sd slot, so without opening the device. Hope that you can help me again
To put it simple when you use a OTG device (like a card reader) your phone powers the card reader (electricity flows from phone to device). When you connect your phone to a computer/charger the device will charge your phone (electricity flows from device to phone). This functionality is controlled by connecting pin 4 of the microUSB maje jack to ground. I've read that some Xperia phones have a 3rd option: if you connect a certain value resistor between pin 4 and ground, you could power both the phone and the card reader from your charger.
Cheers!
So I had installed a 2012 Nexus 7 in my car dash. That went relatively easy since you could just move the ribbon cable for the charge port and plug almost any cable into it. I have it apart and decided to upgrade to the 2013 version. The problem is the screen is attached to the same board the Micro usb port is soldered to and I have almost no room on the side of the tablet. It being a Hair taller is killing me. Does anyone know where I can get a very low profile micro usb cable? Something similar to what is attached to this charger. Need it to have data as well. Or if anyone has any ideas on what could be done I'd like to hear.

I want to use 90 ° micro usb cable, that would not fit?
An Idea
The board with the micro USB can easily be removed with a small screwdriver so it would just hang behind the nexus inside the car. That's no good if you plan on using the nexus like a regular tablet.
I had the phone for like 2 months now, anyways the phone stops charging if i move the cable slightly.I noted that the second cooper pin from the micro usb is missing of pushed idk. It's charging but its annoying when I use it while charging.I tried different cables but they don't work or chargr slowly.Do you think I can fix it with a needle or something?
