I do a lot of different things on my phone but have not had this issue. My keboards back light and soft buttons will not come on unless I change the brightness then it shuts back off once I time out the screen and back on. I've tried everything and can't get it back! Please help no backlight is really annoying!

On my new Galaxy S 2 the soft keys are not turning off completly, they are staying on, even when the phone is sleeping the keys are dim. What can this be?
So apparently no one else has this problem or a solution for it. Am i out of luck?
When you go into the touch key light duration setting in the display settings, what does it say? If it's at like 6 seconds but still stays on forever then something is wrong. Try a factory reset. Failing that, warranty exchange fo sho.
Related side note - when I use Netflix, my soft keys stay lit up the whole time. There is no words that can illustrate the frustration and annoyance at this little "feature". It's bright as **** in a dark room trying to watch a show.

But what's happening is that when the screen is on the touch keys work as they should, but when the screen turns off the touch keys remain turned on in like a dim state. Very wired!

I just put mine on auto brightness, went to camera app, took a few photos and then pressed home button, seemed okay to me.
I did notice however that I can 'hear' the shutter/lens going 'click' when I press the home button, anyone else noticed this?
Okay so i flashed CM9 and everything is going well... but the only issue i have is the back light on the soft keys... the home, notification, back, and the search. the back light of the soft keys doesnt turn on for a while when i press the power button. it probably takes 30 seconds. not really a big issue but i want to know if there's a way to fix this. Thanks in advance.

Keyboard Backlight controller (a free app in the Play Store) might be what you are looking for. It keeps the back lights either on or off for your softkeys, but i don't know about how to use it so they shut off after a certain period of time.
I used this app on my Galaxy Ace and it worked like a charm, same on my friend's HTC One V, but i have no used it on my SII X yet (just got it )
Anyway, I hope this can help you, because besides that I have no clue

Have my friends One X here and I can't for the life of me find any settings for the back lit soft keys.
His don't seem to be lighting up at all when pressed. I know on my GS3 the settings are in the display area.
Any ideas?

The soft buttons on the one X is not meant to light up everytime when pressed, it is meant to be lit up only when its dark, try covering the top bit on the front screen (where the proximity sensor and bsi sensor is) it should light up then
There are also no settings to configure the light up soft button keys, the is, however a command that keeps the soft keys lit up all the time but that requires rooting your phone
Gotcha. Odd. I'll figure something out for him. He wants them to be on whenever his screen is on.
Thanks.

It seems there could be a combination of keys/gestures that can turn the capacitive keys off.. But nobody yet has been able to figure our either the lock or unlock combination
I guess your only option is to flash back to stock
