I have a brand new EVO 4g being shipped as I post this. I have also seen HTC's news about phones being shipped wth unlocked bootloaders. Is it possible that my new EVO will arrive with s-off?
No, a refurb might occasionally be received s-off, if the previous owner had rooted it, but not a new phone.
And while HTC has said they are going to allow the bootloaders to be unlocked on some new phones, as far as I know, they haven't unlocked any yet. Even if/when they do, I doubt they will ship with s-off. My guess is that they will provide a method to get s-off after purchase, but since they haven't done it yet nobody really knows how they are going to do it.
That sucks. I'm ready to root! I'm tired of the OS on this phone. It kills my battery too quickly with the gingerbread update.

You aren't kidding. I unrooted and accepted the OTA stupidly because I had a warranty problem and had to take it back to Sprint. I had previously been rooted and had a great CM7/tiamat kernel setup that yielded me unreal battery life. The battery life and garbage on this stock phone is a joke. I absolutely cannot wait until there is a root method for 2.3 because stock licks balls!
No doubt it is. I guess ill be waiting on the hboot to get unlocked myself. Once s-off is established everything else will fall in line. Let's go devs!!!

Just went through this myself yesterday. You can definitely understand my frustration at reading that the 2.3x ROMs can't be rooted yet with S-ON...

Hey all
Still trying to absorb all the info around here. My contract is up with ATT at the end of August and I'll be getting an EVO then. However, by that time all the EVOs sold will most likely be coming stock with Froyo. I'm really looking forward to rooting/flashing, so I'm a little worried stock Froyo isn't rootable if you haven't rooted/unencrypted the NAND before you upgraded. Is this [currently] the case?

As of now, stock Froyo is NOT rootable. Fear not though Caanon. A dev will root it. It's inevitable. I've noticed the devs around here love challenges.
You are basically stuck until a dev finds a new root method to get 2.2 rooted. Give it time i am sure a dev will
EDIT: See above!
Perfect, exactly what I was expecting. Thanks!
+1, hope it wont wait for too long.
It's also safe to assume that the phone will NOT be leaving the store with 2.2 already by the end of the month. You should be able to use the current methods (I prefer simple root) to root your phone.
It's even SAFER to assume that the latest OTA will have a root method by the end of the month, so even if it does, you won't have to worry about it.
In short:
Don't worry about it. If you get the phone at the end of the month, you'll have no problem rooting.
OKay for weeks now i have been searching ways to Root my HTC EVO I have been looking and looking maybe i am confused so now i see great methods to root the files are no good such as ginger breaks and other ways such you tube videos but unable to find a video who do play by play how to do a easy successful root method now i am currently S-on my Hboot is 2.15 and build number is 4.24 now i know unrevoked is not working since the update make a long story short if anybody has some of a method please reply in a nice way and don't bash me because i may not know this phone stuffed by i am geek in computers so we all have good things what we do best.
Put simply, 2.3 hasn't been rooted yet, they're making progress but you're out of luck for the moment.
Still no method yet, waiting impatiently, check the forums multiple time daily. I'm sure there will be an announcement when it available, so just keep your eyes peeled. Just rooted my wifes evo because she never accepted the OTA, now I'm drooling in jealousy.

Well I have my HTC evo 4g fully rooted with unrevoked. What I did is I broke my phone and I'm under the black tie program with sprint. I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE. They asked if I would rather it come fully activated. Or would I rather activate it myself. I told them I'd rather activate it myself. I paid the 100 dollar deposit and while Isaac activating my phone I stopped the firmware and software update. It only comes on the phone as an ota if you activate yourself. If they activation it you will be stuck where you are. After stopping the firmware update I was sitting at stock android 2.2 aka froyobwith hboot 2.10. If you're willing to spend 100 bucks to do this, it will come a lot faster than the HTC bootloader update or the developers hacking methods. No offense to the development team. You Guy do an amazing job. But yea, that's the way I did it. Then I rooted with unrevoked and am currently running cm7 and am extremely happy with improved battery life along many other things. Maybe this will help you

I agree with this. NEVER EVER EVER EVER LET SPRINT activate a phone. DON'T EVEN LET THOSE ASSHOLES TOUCH IT! Biggest mistake you can EVER EVER make! spread this around. :-D However!, I find it hard to believe on the "I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE."
It might not be unused but it definitely came in mint condition with the froyo firmware on it so that's all I needed lol as of right now if you're willing to spend the 100 bucks its well worth it in my opinion. Good luck getting root guys ill see if I can't find a way to help the devs and the others working in the collaboration in the development section.

That is not necessarily true. My evo was destroyed in a car accident. Asurion sent me my replacement. I was hoping it would be 2.2 and denied their request to activate my phone. When the new phone arrived, it had already been loaded with 2.3.3. I didn’t even bother to activate it and ended up going back to my rooted hero for the time being. Getting a replacement phone is a crapshoot. There are multiple posts on XDA giving anecdotal reports of replacement phones. Most are shipping with gingerbread. Some still will have froyo. Some (very few) will come with S-off. Don’t assume that by breaking your phone and dropping $100 you will automatically be shipped a phone capable of being unlocked at present time.

It really depends on if the phone was made before the ota release date and whatnot. You cn request that it come with 2.2 instead of gb. This method may not work for everyone but I know that it has worked for the friends I have around my area. They saw what happened and wanted to try it and its worked for them. If you feel that its a longshot at getting the right phone
Then by all means stick with what you've got. I just was willing to try anything to get rid of gb. But now I'm running cm7 with a tiamat kernel and am very happy. Little side note: I actually didn't break my phone on purpose.

I see your method and point so I am in KCMO AKA Kansas City MO doing some research online and from Best Buy they have an HTC EVO for 99.99 in white Android 2.2 and even called them to confirmed but doing some thinking and playing around on the Android Market SPB 3D its Awesome since I cant root my phone but I pay the 14.95 that way my phone is not harm and I have my warranty still but i am sticking with SPB 3D
They just came out with the revolutionary root for gingerbread. Look in the android dev section and you'll find it. It works too. I rooted a friends phone using that method and he had absolutely no issues with his phone. Even though my usb cord had a short in it there was no problem with it that made it brick even though it disconnected multiple times. Id have to say that it is a very safe root method. So check it out if you're still interested in root

Okay, so I ordered my Evo 4G back in June right before Sprint emailed me about the Evo 3D coming in 12 days from that date. When my Evo arrived, I activated it by calling sprint, made a test call, checked the software (2.2.1 I believe), threw the phone in my pocket and drove to soccer practice. When I got back home from practice, my phone had updated to 2.3.3. I suppose autoupdating was on or something and it ran the OTA itself while I was at practice. So now I am trapped with a 2.3.3 Evo with S-ON and I am furious. I am sure that there are others like me with a never rooted Evo dying to get theirs rooted as well. If anyone has any information as to the progress of either a real TEMP ROOT or FULL ROOT then don't hesitate to post it in this thread. I don't want this to be a discussion thread; just a simple "Post What You Know" sort of thing.

The best place for you to get information at this point is following some devs on twitter: alpharevx,Agraben,Unrevoked. I'm sure others can add to this list.
They seem to be making the most progress.
And sorry to hear about your phone updating itself. That sucks.

Wht is your Hboot version?
well it does not really matter the hboot. i can tell you, it is hboot 2.16. all gingerbread 2.3.3 regardless of software version (4.22.651.2 and 4.24.651.1) will have that hboot.
and unfortunately the devs will not post any progress. they may or may not post when an exploit is found. they may just post only when a temp root is available. it is all hush hush for fear of htc or even sprint releasing a silent ota that can close the exploit. so for now if you do not see any threads about an exploit or an ability to root your evo, then you should just wait. there will be posts (more like thousands, lol) about it.

I just bought my Evo 4G (RadioShack is having a sale on them now that the 3D is out) It also self-updated. I would really like to get it rooted. It comes with so much Sprint Bloatware I can only download a few apps before getting the "low space" warning.
Any help is appreciated.
Well... Is nothing you can do for now... Just waiting with all of us.
Unfortunately I received a new Evo from repair center with Hboot 2.16.0001 and last OTA included. I miss my rooted EVO...
Hope devs find a solution soon, thanks to everyone working on it.
I doubt very seriously its an auto ota update. If that was the case no one in the evo threads would still have root. It would've auto dated every evo still with 2.2, besides it says make sure the battery is full before u take it. #justsaying

in the mean time can anyone tell me how to shut the phone off all the way without pulling the battery. power off by pressing power button pretty much just puts it to sleep you cant get to recovery or hboot when powering back on.

I have mine rooted and am planning on selling it. Are the latest software versions not able to be rooted easily? Is so, do you think it may be worth more on ebay advertising it as rooted, or am I better off bringing it back to stock?
It depends on the buyer. It is harder to root the newer ones than the old ones, unless you HTC dev it, which is not S-OFF. So, for a dev/techie, you'd be better leaving it rooted. If the buyer is the average Joe, then unrooted would be better.\
The easy way is to say "The phone is currently rooted, and I can install any custom ROM you want. Or I can unroot it before I ship it."
By the way, what phone are you getting with the $$$?

I thought about advertising it that way too, but didn't want to scare anyone away thinking I'm some hacker. 99% of those out there probably don't know what rooting is anyway.
I bought this phone used a couple of months ago to upgrade from my DINC1. I miss the trackpad and size of the DINC1, so I went back to that. I just want to sell the 2 so that it isn't sitting around depreciating.
Wow, really? I love the size of the inc2's screen and that makes me not need the trackball. I also could never give up the battery life of the inc2 for the inc1. To each his own. Then I would unroot and sell that way, it sounds like that's the best course of action for you.

The official 5.1 update is on it's way from Verizon next week. For those of us waiting patiently for jcase to release an s-off method, I'm thinking it might be better to avoid updating? I can only imagine the hboot will get an update with this 5.1 update. With that, it will probably undo all the work jcase has done up to this point.
Am I wrong to think this?
Is it harmless to take the update?

Harmless unless you want to meet up the next time I drive down to Delaware.
There is no sense in waiting on an update for a root exploit that may or may not ever come. S-Off already works on 5.1 but Verizon users are still waiting for a root exploit as before. Odds are you could be waiting a long time. Might as well enjoy the new software while you wait.

Plenty of helpful members with Java Cards to get you S-Off now. Best if you can find someone in your area to meet with to avoid shipping the device.

There's nothing (public) to undo. Unless by chance jcase discovered an exploit and HTC found it as well and fixed it....
It's starting to appear that many of these folks who can figure this sh*t out are losing interest in working on devices from Verizon and other carriers who go to extreme lengths to lock them down. I mean, my previous phone was a Galaxy S3 and Samsung / VZW locked them down tight. The S4 uses presumably the same security (my wife had one so I was a little up to speed on them). I haven't bothered checking the S5 or S6 but I'm confident they're not exploitable either.... Just to be clear, I'm not criticizing those folks if they're no longer trying. That's 150% their decision and choice !

So going forward, after our edge programs are eligible etc etc, what is the best alternative to have an unlocked bootloader and root even be an option without extreme measures? Pay off the edge program and go to T-Mobile and HTC? That way the bootloader can be unlocked from HTC? I'm very thankful to have my M9 rooted and unlocked but thinking ahead, what's the best course of action? Thoughts?

I had scott123 "free" my M9 the day after I rec'd it.

only reason i had to use SS was cos my dad got a new phone and gave me his old sg3, and at this point it had 4.4.4 so bootloader couldnt be unlocked anymore and had to use SS, it was horrible imo
