My phone (Captivate) came with an earbud style headset with a mic inline so you could answer calls, talk on the phone, and listen to music. Are there any non-earbud (behind-or-over-the-head) style wired headsets like this? All I can find are ones that have two connectors (pink and green, as if for a PC sound card), or wireless bluetooth ones.
You're right I really can't find any wired-stereo-non-earbud-headsets. Here are some that have trade offs.
The following is an over the head/wired/non-earbud, but its not stereo.
http://www.accessorywiz.com/over-th...-headset-headphone-for-samsung-captivate.html
This one is everything you wanted but it's not wired.
http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=219366058&sellerid=19087894
Anyways, Good hunting!
Yes, it is odd that these are not available since there are so many of the earbud type that are. I already have a few bluetooth headsets with input, including one with a boom mic, that work fine but I would prefer a wired one for all-day use.
I found a pair : Sennheiser PX 100-IIi . Although they are made for iDevices, the controls and mic supposedly work with some android phones (I assume the ones with 4 pole connectors). I will soon see. I already have a pair of plain PX100 and they are my favorite wired headphones, so if these work as I hope, they will be great.

Nope - they don't change the volume anyway, but you can use the button to stop and start music as well as answer and hang up the phone.
However, a good set of non-wired headphones that does have full control with volume, starting and stopping music, and talking on the phone, including good voice quality despite not having an external mic, is the Motorola S305 bluetooth headphones. They are not as good as the Sennheisers for music quality, though.

Some of the Samsung Galaxy series - Note, Note 2, Captivate, Skyrocket. Perhaps for some other manufacturer, like Sony, the volume controls would work.
OK, I have a MOTO G, and I have these http://www.meelec.com/MEElectronics_M9P_Earphones_for_iPhone_iPod_p/earphone-m9p-bk-mee.htm and they work. I mean, the controls work like a charm!
I'm guessing it's because it uses the 4 pull jack, so that should mean that the PX 100-2i should work to!
Anyone know a cable converter that will work for the Galaxy S3 (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5mm-iPhon...e-Samsung-HTC-LG-/140574981373#ht_3686wt_1163)
I have Klipsch S4i headphones that have volume control for the iPhone only. I want to use these headphones with FUNCTIONAL volume control with the Galaxy S3.
If you find one, let me know. This is one of my major gripes with Samsung. I managed to get headphones working with my Samsung Galaxy S using a Nokia headphone remote control, but this doesn't work on the SIII.
Why can't they just use the same standard as everyone else.
Or possibly sell an adaptor, and educate their store staff - went to the popup Samsung store in Spitalfields Market (London) today and they had no idea what I was talking about. The sales assistant finally admitted that his headphones don't work with his S2 either. But was clueless as to how to help.
?!?!

i`ve got a pair of beats headphones and they did not work at all with my first sgs
but now with the s3, the centre button works, answering calls, pausing and skipping tracks, and the mic also works, but the volume doesn`t...
Yeah the S4i also has a working center button but no functioning volume control (which is what I mostly use...don't really care about a mic)
The other adapter I looked at is called Fiio LU2 but I have not seen anyone specifically use it for the SG3.

still nothing?
Hey,
I have just brought the Fiio adapter,

Hey. Is it the Fiio LU2? I wanted to get that but did not know if would work.
Waiting to get your input!
Thanks!
LU2 doesn't work
Hi there, I just bougth the fioo lu2 cable and it doesn't work with the s3. I'm sending it back to amazon. I have sony headphones and even for me everything works except the volume controls. With the lu2 connected, nothing works and the audio is all "push-pull" (I hope that is how you say that in english).
So don't buy it!

Yeah it's nice, but for 30$ I think I can buy a pair of headset as good as my Sony.
Btw,yesterday I try using them again and another thing I noticed is that even if the sound quality is waaaaay better with my Sony, the volume is much more lower than the included Samsing's. So it's not only a matter of the voulme button not working. And today I'm back with the Samsung's...

Yeah, I wont mind paying $30 to get my Pro's working properly with my sweet phone..
Hmm...the ones that come with the S3 have volume control. I hope some headphone manufacturers can reverse-engineer it. I think it has to do with how the parts of the jack are arranged. Because I know on the iPhone the ground part is switched.
Klipsch S4i Reference w/ Mic
I just tried using my Klipsch S4i Reference w/ Mic headphones and the center button + ear buds work but the volume and microphone do not work. I'd appreciate it if anyone discovers an adapter that converts iPhone headphones to work with the Samsung Galaxy S III. Anybody know why it is this way? I've compared the Samsung headphone jack to the Kilpsch ones and I don't see much of a difference...

well, I can change tracks in power amp with that button click option, not in the normal player. In that, the centre button plays/pauses the track.
How did you manage to change the volume on the s3?
10.00 adapter
For 10.00 you can buy the Meelec ADPTR-TRRS-35. I would post the link, but I cant because I'm a new user. If you just type it in to Google, it'll show up. Also, if you're good with soldering, you can buy the tips and solder them yourself. I bought gold plated and its lasted me years with my original galaxy.

Why does it say on the site ``This adapter will not enable the mic/volume buttons of a 3-button Apple compatible headset to work with non-Apple devices``?
I am toying with taking the buds off my iphone headphones ( i like the buds not the in ear stuff) and soldering them to the samsung cable... i know it might be sacrlidge to do so with more expensive headphones but... dangerous times... drastic measures and such.....
I have a rogers s3 rooted running CM 10 and the headphones NOW work. Function keys all working correctly So this was clearly a software limitation.

While I was in Samsung country last month (Seoul), I went to a few headphone/audio retail shops which let you test out almost ANY brand of headphones you'd like--and apparent this has been a big issue for Samsung users (since most volume control + mic headphones out there are built to work for and certified for use with Apple). One method they taught me (aside from rooting and hacking ROMs), was to download this app called "JAYS". This app will somehow allow the microphones to work on many brands (I use Sennheisers personally) whereas it would not work before due to the different in impedance. The app also creates shortcuts using the working center button, allowing short/long keypresses to do quite a lot (i.e. short press + long press will lower volume, double short press will skip tracks, etc) by turning the center button (which works on MOST headphoens) into a morse code-like button.
I have yet to find a ROM out there that allows my Sennheisers (MM80i, MM70i) to work with the volume buttons, but I've been happy with the JAYS app.
I was using the Klipsch S4A's (the Android version of S4i's) just fine with my S3 but realized when I switched to Shure 315s (I bought the phone adapter cable by Shure), the mic would not work, and also the phone call would still go to my phone, even with the ear set plugged in. I have quite a few ear sets lying around, so here's a results round up:
OK:
Tjays Four
Klipsch S4A
NOT OK:
Ajays Four
Shure 315 (well, the adapter cable anyways)
Kplisch S4i
ALL of these headsets worked with my S2.
Does my phone have a problem?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.
Thanks.
Ken
I just realized my Klipsch S5i don't work with this phone, I'm bummed. So the S4a works properly, mic and everything?
coming from galaxy S , i find that samsung jacks is not universal , even some top end brands like grado , bose headphone doesnt work well
be sure to check compatibility issue before you get any headset , not all work perfectly on samsung jacks

Ugh, same here. My UE 600vi's worked great on my Galaxy Nexus, but now my mic doesn't work on the GS3. However, the center button still works.
I can confirm most i-Phone centric mic'd headphones (especially the ones with 3 buttons) aren't working. Myself I have a TDK EB950 that exhibits the same characteristics - works for music (the middle button only), fails at calls.
Now using a Belkin Universal mic adapter (single button) with it. Works swell no issues.
I suspect the impedence difference is messing with the part that reads the button signals.
my 600vi is a little bit different
my UE600vi works fine with galaxyS2 but not with S3.
funny thing is both earphone & mic works fine when I'm call someone.
but when i RECEIVE a call (when 600vi plugged in) , suddenly my GS3 works as if there's no earphone. (sounds and mic works from the phone, not my 600vi)
i really can't understand why,, i'm using Korean galaxyS3 though. Asked samsung about this, but the reply was "go ask logitech!!!" lol
Since the S4A earphones work, I would assume that the S4A (II)'s will work. If anyone has purchased this new revised set, I'd like to know if this is the case, I might be purchasing some soon.
I have a pair of Audiofly AF45M's that work great. However they do not have a three button remote in-line, only one button for answering calls/pausing/skipping tracks. The mic seems to work well, none of my calls have complained and the few friends I asked said my voice was clear even in noisy environments. I must say that they are the best in ear headphones that I've owned (well should say that they're the nicest pair that I've bought compared to freebies). I know this isn't a thread for IEM reviews but I only mention it because from what I read on head-fi they are a brand new company out of Australia and are making some great products.
I had a pair of Ultimate Ears 350vm's from Costco but I didn't even make any calls with them because I didn't like the sound quality compared to my Audiofly's. So I returned them, the volume slider and the push button seemed to work, but cannot comment on the microphone functionality.
Right now I'm using a pair of Brainwavz M5 (also have the M4) with mic and one button and they work perfectly fine. Also tried the Shure 215 with mic cable (again the one button version, not the iPhone one) a few weeks ago and those also worked without any problems.
There seems to be a hardware thing in the S3 which cause "Made For iPhone" headsets (most notably those with volume buttons) to not function properly...
True!
I've just tested with my Klipsch Image One and S4i. When I call someone, everything works just fine, mic and end call by the center button.
So it must be a Software issue.
Thanks,
Adler
I have the Shure E215 with the phone cable (single button), and it's worked fine, both with stock and CM10. The triple button cable is wired differently.
You're right. I also have a Beats Studio with single button and it also works fine. But since my headphones with triple buttons also work when I initiate a call it must be a software problem.

More Headset tests
First off, Thank You all, for all the helpful info! I have a set of (awesome) Skullcandy Heavy Medals, and a set of Skullcandy 50/50's, and also a set of some type of Logitech earbuds, all have 3 button mic's, None work as mic's on My Galaxy S3, They all work as headphones, but if trying to answer a call, they need to be unplugged, and plugged back in, to hear a voice, but still no mic, and they all worked on My Galaxy S2, and another S2 HD Lte, (All on Bell mobility Canada), and also worked well on My Nexus 4. The Oem samsung headset works great, including mic and volume up/down, and answer button. Also I have a set of Skullcandy Ink'd, with a single button on mic, and they work fine on S3 as well. My S3 is an Unlocked SGH-i747M originally a Rogers wireless Canada phone.
Thanks again, and I hope this helps someone! :cyclops:

Any wired headset with 3.5mm connector will work with Galaxy S III
This is for phone conversations right? I will be working from home so I need it to work perfectly

You have no idea how WRONG you are.
Galaxy S 3 is one the most picky phones I've ever owned, it's almost as bad as the worst phone ever - LG Nitro HD.
Just go to your local RadioShack and ask them to test all available headsets, see how many of them will be 100% working (sound, mic, music and phone calls). I'll bet at least half of them will only work for music, some will work for phone calls only when plugged in AFTER call was established. Not to mention remote buttons...(I've done just that with 5 headsets they had that could be re-packaged, only one worked)
This is ridiculous. I've already contacted Samsung regarding this, they politely asked me to piss off. The SkullCandy headphone manufacturer also said "bad luck, come again".
Now using piece of sh.t off brand headset, which works perfectly, but with terrible sound.
SkullCandy FIX don't work, however "fake" SkullCandy FIX (black and white with only one button) work fine, but they lasted 1 week before wire broke.
Wired Headset with Microphone
You may want to try Klipsch s4A. It is especially made for Android phones.
im using urbanears bagis.. been using it during the s2 days and now on the s3.. mic works excellently and the earplugs produce excellent sound quality as well..

I'm using Skullcandy's FMJ on my S3. It has a one button mic and I am able to answer calls and end calls with it. Also when not used for calls, pressing it once will play the music player, pressing it twice would play the next song but I can't go back to the previous song though. Pretty much good for me already.
Erm, yeah same here.... Had the basic skull candy ink set, and now a similar set. Both have worked perfectly..... Cheap too at a tenner a pair.....

I am using the Sony XBA-2VP at the moment (right in the middle of Sony's line of balanced armature IEMs). The mike works well on calls as well as with Power Amp.
Wish Sony would release the XBA-3 or XBA-4 for Android (as they have for the iPhone)....
Kind regards
So far everyone who say this and that works fine, refer only to these in-ear type headsets. What about normal buds type, that don't go inside the ear?
Hello,
My brother gave me his old BOSE OE2i's and they're nice but the volume up and down buttons do not work because they're originally designed for the iphone and from my understanding apple uses a different pin layout of their 3.5mm connectors. I would love to be able to use the volume up and down buttons, as well as the microphone. The only working button is the middle play/pause/skip button.
FiiO LU2 Cable is the only thing I've found so far but apparently it doesn't make the volume up and down buttons work so that's a pass.... I know you can solder the cable but I don't want to really risk damaging the cable. If anyone knows of any iphone to galaxy s3 headset converters please let me know!
Thanks,
Zealex.
If the headset was originally made for iphone then you can forget it, the volume up/down signal from a certificated/original headset are different as from for example the i9300 original headset. the original headset from the S3 is not even working on a lg smartphone.
and for this no adapters exist

I am using too a Bose AE2I with my S3. You can work around this issue with a software as Headset Button .
When you push the central button of the Bose 4 times, the sound starts from low level and increase progressively. You select the volume by pushing the button once again.
This is not perfect by its ok for my usage as sometime I also simply use the s3 volume up and down button.
Bummer that such a converter exists, thanks for the replies guys! Blows that there aren't any headphones that can use the volume controls on the s3... :/
