[Q] DHD - sudden touchscreen failiure - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday, everything was working fine. I decided to do a reboot of my DHD, just because I haven't done it in a long time. When it succesfully rebooted, i tried to enter my SIM code. Touchscreen wasn't responding. I tried to reboot it again by taking the battery out, but touchscreen wasn't responding. So, I took the SIM card out and tried to reboot it, no success with the touchscreen. Today i took of my previous system (sense 3.0, with RCMIX3D) and installed a new one - Virtous unity 1.2.7.0 - no success again. I didn't have my DHD exposed to sun, I didn't drop it, it worked perfectly fine, untill i rebooted it. I want to send it back, for them to repair it, but I can't unroot it without my touchscreen working.
HELP!

I had once encountered unresponsive touchscreen before, but that was caused by some app that clashed with my touchscreen program.
Since you have flashed a new rom, I assume that you have full wipe as well? If the problem persist, I bet it is a hardware problem and you have to unroot using adb then.

Do the 4 "hardware" buttons work when you're in recovery?
Cwm 3.x + supports those buttons to navigate thru the menu.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

all of the buttons work normally in recovery. i formatted the sd card and loaded the system again, but no difference, touchscreen still isn't working. i will probably have to unroot it and send it to repair.

If the buttons work, there is no issue with the digitizer. At least no hardware issue since the digitizer for the buttons and the screen itself is the same.
Format system, format data, install a new rom and try if it works.

Agreed, there has to be some conflict, when you format these partitions, make sure to do it manually from mounts and storage menu and not using full-wipe.zip
You might also have to mount the partitions before formatting them depending on your recovery version.

I think you misunderstood. By full wipe we mean to not wipe the SD card but wipe the phones internal partitions.

i think he ment the 3 hardware buttons (volume up, volume down and power button) and not the Menu, home, back and search buttons.
Otherwise, how to test those "touch hardware" buttons anyway?

Problem with LeeDroid V3.3.1_GB

I installed 'Full Wipe to EXT4 patch', followed by LeeDroid V3.3.1_GB then V5_HTC_Sense_3.0.
Very happy with the ROM and installation until I ran a Nandroid backup after getting the phone set up with apps and my data. Booted after the backup, the phone started up with the background screen and the Notification bar but no Desktop icons, no 'pull ring', no soft buttons and no hard buttons (pwr, volume)
The phone is 'working' - it rings, receives texts & emails (displays them on Notification bar but I just can't use it! I removed battery and restored the Nandroid but whatever had gone wrong has been saved in the Nandroid as it didn't help. I tried an Advanced restore, restoring just the System but no better.
I went back to the beginning with a Full Wipe, LeeDroid V3.3.1, etc and all is working but I'm concerned that this may happen again. I don't want to have to carry out daily backups.
One further point - I had the same problem when I first installed this rom a couple of weeks ago. On that ocassion, I was configuring my email client when I ran out of battery power. I assumed that the problem was bad luck with the timing of the battery going flat but now I'm not so sure.
Any ideas? Should I give up on Leedroid? (I don't want to)
Many thanks,
Nick

My question is how often should you format SDcard? I always format everything but SD when flashing roms. I've probably flashed 10 or more roms and never formatted my SDcard.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
I wouldn't think how often would matter so much, but if your having issues a reformat might set somethings straight. I was having some issues with my sdcard and a reformat fixed them. Other people changed the card completely and it fixed their issues.

Home button killed in hard reset: what with custom ROMs?

If you've poked a bit with the Play and you've done a hard-reset (wiped the /data and /cache partition in CWM) later on, you'll find that you have a different wallpaper and that the Home button dies. This makes custom ROMs impossible to keep in the long run, since every hard reset would kill said button, and of course, when you make custom ROMs you wipe your phone quite frequently.
Has anyone investigated which can be the cause of this behavior? My guess is that there's something in the /data partition which should be left untouched, in order to preserve the Home button. What's your take?
I doubt it, on more than one occation i have fastboot erased /system /boot /data. And have never lost home button functionality. Maybe its something CWM is doing wrong?
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
I have reproduced the issue using the standard (aka, the GUI-activated) hard reset method as well. Home button dies.
Ive read flashing Gapps after the wipe repairs the home button?
That can work in CM7... but what if you're using a stock rom as a base? (which was the GP2Xperia case)
When you wipe, of course you're going to have a different wallpaper. Home button keeps working just fine, no matter how many times you wipe. I suspect you're using a CM7 ROM, which for a time had the home button not working.
Flash to stock and it will be fine.
Perhaps it'd be good to link the GP2Xperia thread: I'm noticing I wasn't alone in those issues.

So maybe it's something you added or took away from your rom thats causing the issue?
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
And that gets me back to the Start square: considering that I've added nothing, and I've only substracted things, whose wiping is killing the Home button?
I believe it's something stored on data not system that causes the issue

My home button wasn't working on CM7 until I re-installed g-apps.
'Setup Wizard' is required to "activate" home button
How's the APK called? I can't find it with Titanium Backup.

so did it work?
It does work. The Setup thing itself looks funny as I've chopped half of the things, but the Home button works as intended. So, if you want to do a custom Rom, make sure that SEMCSetupWizard.apk is in the System folder!
.Just broke my home button deleting apks on stock rom. Re added as posted works fine again

Rebooting over and over again

Hello,
sorry if u will find this thread to be repeated, but I was searching so much, and nothing helped me. After all, I think you are my last chance.
So to the problem:
One day I rebooted my Desire Z - rooted, CyanogenMod 7.2.0 RC# ( # is number can't remember which one - 2 or 3). Then I haven't paid attention to it and when I came home I noticed that phone is turned-off. So I turned it on: HTC white screen with green htc logo, CM loading screen and PIN code screen. So i entered PIN everything started loading ( i mean icons in notification bar appeared ) and then it happened: reboot. So again: logo, CM screen, PIN. I was bit slow so I didn't manage to enter PIN code and phone rebooted again. So it appears like it reboots in periods. So I start searching around the internet. I tried some things which I knew how to do, but I always found some problem. For example I can't mount USB storage while in CWM v5.0.2.7.
It appears to be boot loop, but I am not sure because I got to entering PIN code.
Help me, pls... I'm clueless.
P.S.: Sorry for my english, it's not my native language.

Umm, don't do that ^^^^^
But it does look like you have some serious issues, try this, boot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, now flash cm7 on top of it
If it still is causing issues then you need to do a full wipe (even better if you super wipe or fastboot -w)
Then flash ROM of choice, cm7 is great and there are many good Roms based off of cm7 I would also recommend, elitemod or ilwt for a couple nice options

I am at work right now and I left phone at home, but I can tell you I tried wiping cache. Problem appeared when I showed log of this wiping and there was something like app2s something with partitions or something like. I already formatted my card in PC (FAT32, not quick format, non-USB card reader - normal one). Should I try different card (card is gold card CID-11111111 (i don't know how many ones ))?
And if I will try what strip419 said, could something possibly happen to my phone ( in wrong way)?

I wouldn't bother with reflashing the hboot, I would try more 'non-destructive' solutions first.
Reflashing thé hboot is thé only way to format all partitions do away with any thing that could be doing this of cos you could brick your phone but if you follow rules its gonna be okay if you have adk on your pc then you could use the command tool to clear this but that could do worse damage if you are a noob so its up to you man try or keep looking for a. Solution that will end up like mine any way

You can flash recovery from fastboot or via PC10IMG.zip the same way doing a hboot reinstall would work, except in this case you don't go to such extremes to do the entire hboot over again, just the recovery and go from there. If it's an ENG hboot can use fastboot directly to flash the recovery.img, otherwise you pack it into a PC10IMG.zip and place it on the SD card.
Worse case scenario, the internal memory is fried, and attempting to do a full hboot reinstall would most likely brick it as opposed to only trying to flash a portion.
I had a repetitive reboot issue when flashing a previous ROM as well.
My noob solution was to put PC10IMG.zip back on the SD card, boot to recovery using ADB and then going through the whole process of reinstalling hboot and putting on a known ROM. Didn't brick mine and I'm new to this...
Could have done with finding this forum earlier.
all should know to be careful doing that method, if it were a stock rom and you simply flashed the pc10img.zip with radio hboot, etc in it you could get a brick easy, especially if you don't have a working rom with adb functionality.
what would happen would be (this is if you have eng s-off as most root users do) your phone would begin by flashing the bootloader, after this it would reboot and attempt to flash flash the radio, only problem is the new hboot would be ship s-on and therefore would get stuck, leving you a soft brick with a little luck it would be possible to fix this but it could be that it is unfixable depending on the exact circumstances
all this is just to say be careful what you do, noob or not, if you aren't 100% sure what you are doing when flashing firmware a brick is easy

I have a similar problem but not sure if it's the same one... When I boot up my phone it goes through all the boot images fine, but when it starts it starts sometimes with my background showing and sometimes in a blank screen but both saying Android System at the top then shortly after shut down (usually shows shutting down not just straight up turns off) I have flashed new roms, reflashed backups, even got a jelly bean rom to go through the optimizing apps screen thing then would go to a blank screen with Android System on top again, and shut down.
Any help would be amazing! I've had my G2 since it's release and would hate to think it ran out of hearts :crying:

I also have the same problem. I attempted to use superwipe g2 to no avail.
I have clockwork recovery installed, and every custom rom I try to use seems to crash 5-10 seconds after finishing to loading screen for say cm7 or cm9.
I do not have a goldcard so am wondering what the best course of action would be. I am reluctant to follow the Hboot advise as the risks mentioned seem great.
everyone having these issues should go to irc freenode #g2root (just google it) and can receive real time help there. there are too many possiblities of what is going wrong and not enough information being given to help here well.
once things are figured out and all is working post back here to explain what the problem/fix was so future people finding this thread may have an easier time

What is the hboot way? What does that do? I'll try it, my G2 is already useless now, anything that will fix it including a dangerous way tell me
well hboot (also known as bootloader or spl) is sorta like bios on a pc. but I don't suggest trying anything rash and can't help much unless I know paticulars of your situation, if you give that I can see what I can do, but like I said before if you would like some realtime help go to freenode.
if you want help here give me details, what exactly is your problem, what have you tried to do to fix it, what method specificaly did you use to obtain root, write down everything on your hboot screen (again you get there by holding volume down while powering on)

Well I bought this phone at a swapmeet last year for 40 bucks. Everything worked and it was on gingerbread last year. In a week I googled and found a way to root by using the thread here in the forum by using adb and downgrading to froyo which was a pain for a noob using adb I just add lol, I was on elitemod gb for many months, until I was playing music a few days ago it just rebooted itself and it wouldn't boot correctly. Here's how it goes, htc white screen, boot animation, then it says android system on the top left and all black under and it shuts itself off. EVERY rom I have flashed it does that, I wiped completely and use the superwipe g2+ and still no dice. I couldn't find the 4ext recovery, I need it as a flashable zip to try it.
not really you should be able to flash it via fastboot (which is my opinion the prefered way anyhow) just google search for the image.
but I still need to know what is on your hboot screen or I can't help much further

Keeps rebooting, whatever ROM I use...

Hello,
my Desire just keeps rebooting, only 5-60 seconds after it's started. I have been using "VJ CM10.1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2 - v4.7" for some month, and just today the phone just reboots. Tried everything; full wipe, then updated to latest v5.3, no change. Since then I've gone thru all kinds om ROMs; good old Oxygen, CM7, MildWild, you name it..
What the freak has happend?! I mean; it's the same with every rom! And I had done nothing to my phone since yesterday, this just started this morning and it's driving me crazy!! Gotta have a phone, you know..
Please help!
If its a pvt1 model, it may be a mother board issue.

yh i agree, same happened to me before using a sandisk sdcard, all roms kept on freezing/rebooting so got a new sdcard and all was fine again.
Ok, got a Pvt3. So that should not be the problem. Also got a EXT partition, but wouldn't it be strange that this problem occurs now, when I have used the same sd card, ext partition table, ROM (+ different ones), etc..?
Well, I did a few more full wipe's and all that and what's not, then flashed the latest VJ CM 10 v5.3 again, and for some reason the phone's been stable now for 1,5 hours!! Just crossing my fingers here now, that it keeps this way...
Thanks for all the help! I'll write back if things turn bad again!

weird problems

hi i'm on skank's cm7.2 i installed/uninstalled over the time the next mod: project lard, full gpu rendering, adrenoo booster, pure hd graphics, xtreme project, fluid engine etc and now i wanted to change my rom but on every other rom my home buttom don't work and the lockscreen is dezactivated by itself and if i restore my backup of skank's cm7 everything is working and i don't know what to do, i always wipe data/cache/dalvik and format /system before i install a rom and steel nothing
I had this problem a while ago. IIRC I managed to fix it by going into the bootloader and selecting the "CLEAR STORAGE" option. Then i did a full wipe and flashed a rom.
Its a really weird problem though. No matter what rom i tried flashing the home button wouldnt work. And it wasnt a hardware issue. I remember i even tried enabling the software navigation bar and the home button didnt work on that either.
