Hello. I have decided to buy CaseMate Tough case but i wonder if it heats up my phone because of using 2 layer for protection. Anyone having this case can tell me about it? Thanks.
I am using this case and have not experienced any heating issues. I live in England however, so your experience might be different depending on the ambient temperature your end.
i live in Israel and now its summer here, around 30-35 Celsius and even after sometime of using it you don't really feel the warmth so i think its a legit standard.
only once i experienced something like that, when i tried to see how fast it is and got like 6 webpages, played a game and WiFi working along other apps(obviously nothing slowed down-great phone!).
so no, its good to use, and is doing a great job protecting your phone(I'm quite a phone destroyer)
I own the case as well and would stronly argue against charging and doing intensive stuff on the phone at the same time. You don't really notice how hot it might become, because the double-layer protection very well isolates the heat. That doesn't mean it's actually as cold as it feels. Try charging, running something with high cpu/gpu load and touch the upper part, e.g. the camera.
Besides, I am no an heavily undervolted device, stock SG2's might even become hotter. Could this be a reason for the Case Mate beeing completely sold out in Central Europe?
well i would say you people cant feel that cause of the abs protection skin on the silicone case that you mounted before...2 layer system...take down the abs protection and you will see that the silicone gets warm...
We will not feel the heat because of the case, but what about the phone It isn't very good for the electronic components to get heated up..and if touch case traps all the heat then it might cause issues in the long run..
Do you feel the heat on the screen, or if possible after heavy usage i.e. Wi-Fi, gaming etc, can you remove and cover and see if the phone's body is hot? I believe this will give a far idea about the cover. And in India tough case is yet to be seen..its only barely there that sells..
Just worry about how the device going to dissipate the heat in such thick casing.
Yeah definitively the dissipation is worst, but you can feel the heat from the phone. I mean the two covers just add a bit less than 2 mm to the phone (just looking at it, I don't have anything to measure precisely) ...
In my opinion it is better because you don't burn yourself!! And you may still touch the outer edges of the camera to have a precise knowledge of how hot your phone is... =)

Hey guys I have installed Battery Monitor and my phone is reporting too high temperatures when browsing internet - 42° C.
I played Qosmos on charger and temperature was 47°C. I am really disappointed with battery solution of HOX.
so, what are dangerous temperatures for our phone? I saw someone reported 55.. doest it damage battery?

yep most likely caused by overheat
50 and the clocks go down, 70 and the phone shuts itself off. My temps are basicly always +50 if im playing something or the phone is charging. Playing and charging rises the temps anywhere between 50 and 70... Just recovered from overheating shutdown, so yeah, overheating is indeed present with the ONE X...
Even browsing it gets hot, seems that stock browser heats more than dolphin, but I have to test it further. Temp+CPU shows 40C.

did you notice any gap between screen and metal lining on left side? some people said overheat may cause gap on it..

Now that you should mention it, i can definitely fit my fingernail between the body and the screen glass without any forcing or anything, resulting the case bending and it feels quite as i could just snap the glass off anytime i wanted. The glass also makes creaking noises, especially the bottom part. Scary stuff. Both sides of the screen and bottom corners show some flexing (disortion on the screen when medium pressure is applied) as well.
Beginning to reconsider whether my HOX is pristine or not, or could even the design of the model be flawed.
Good thing there is such thing as warranty.

yes it will be hard to put our hands on this
screen flex is associated with temps, its just not happening to all people depending on their usage and the state it come with out of box
if its hardware trait i can live with it but i prefer to have the flex on top of the screen rather than the sides lol
ill order HOX with screen flex on top lol
I was playing two flash videos yesterday on 3G and some surfing which was about 20 mins my battery before surfing was 40% by the time I realise how hot my phone was it dropped to 11%!!!!
I began to feel the phone get hot on both screen and back was so hot it almost burnt my finger. I understand T3 can get hot but not to the point of temperate of a hot kettle.
Setting the governor to Powersave only uses 2 CPU and save heat by alot even playing games. I use conservative, only uses 2 CPU mostly and its similar to on demand

i had this defect out of box on my first HOX never knew if it was caused by overheat but definitely it was imperfect out of box then screen was so loose you feel you want to pull it out
now ill test the new one which has no lamination imperfections so far
slowly though ill let the glue settle for a week first before starting the heavy stuff

good luck hamdir.. i read some of your post/comment regarding build quality and all this issue.. personally i think it take a lot of hope and belief that you'll get exactly what you want.. mine has gap as well but not so serious.. i think i can live with that and as long as it not getting widen.. except for this and some screen flex, my HOX has no problem..

CPU temperatuur
Is it also possible to measure the cpu temperature? I can only find the battery temperature. The highest temperature I measured was around 45* degrees. Sometimes the phone gets very hot in the right top corner. I have noticed at the left side of the phone there's a little gap, not so big that I could put my finger nail into it, but big enough for dust. At the top the gap between and the body is big enough for me to put my fingernail between the body and the screen, as far as I know that gap was there when I get the phone.
Anyway, I'll stick to this phone, if no dust gets underneath the screen I'm happy the way it is! I love this phone very much!! can't live without it!
My phone seems to get hot. The highest has been over 50C but it gets to over 45C when just browsing the internet with stock browser and not plugged in. This is with the newest 1.29.402.11 firmware
Is this normal for this phone?
I want to buy second-hand Xperia Z1 Compact because it's price is 50% of new one.
Can anyone tell me some common hardware issues, and something i should pay attention at before I buy this used phone?
And what about that "self cracking screen" problem that many people talks about?
Thanks in advance
I'm not sure about the "self cracking" problem, but the anti shatter film is very weak. It was covered in scratches after two weeks of very gentle care (the back less so, but it had some small scratches). It's easy enough to remove, though, and I replaced mine with a glass screen protector which is way better than the ASF (you could use it just without the ASF, but it feels weird, and if you damage that, you're damaging the real screen). Otherwise, I'd check to make sure the battery still holds a good charge and that the headphone jack works. I haven't had any hardware issues besides the ASF since I got mine.
I bought mine about 3 months ago from ebay also here in the UK and i find it has alot of scratches to the back and some also to the front. I havent yet changed the back but it doesnt look too difficult. The phone does scratch easily though. Regarding the battery life i have found it to be the best battery life i have ever seen on a phone i manage to get a day and half even with heavy use it just goes on and on. I would definetly buy one again or maybe the z3c.
@maclynb if i remove that anti shatter film from screen and put tempered glass protector instead, will level of protection remain the same?
What is actually that anti shatter film?
And will screen work if i put tempered glass protector over film (will that be so thick that screen became unresponsive?)
Sorry for such a noob questions, but i need to know if it will survive my careless way of use (My ex-android Galaxy Ace 2 survived everyday droping on concrete for about two years xD )
I can't be sure if it's as safe on drops, but it feels a lot safer to me (I also put the phone in a case, so I haven't impacted the screen directly yet). The ASF is a sort of rigid screen protector Sony used to put on its phones that scratches quite a bit and can be removed with a knife pretty easily, although it might void any warranty you have (seeing as you're buying used, I doubt it'd be an issue). The screen works great with a tempered glass protector; as good if not better than when I had the ASF on.

And what color do you recommend?
I can choose between white, black and green... And can't decide :/
I can't speak to more than the one I own, but the yellow-green color is quite nice. Otherwise, the black is going to give you good compatibility between cases (neutral color cases don't clash with black).

btw, how's battery life on lolipop?
mine (i mean, device i want to buy) is a year old, and i dont know it's battery life and how much battery is weak after a year of usage...
Maybe about 25-30 hours on CM12.1? I was getting very good (35-40) battery on stock, but it started degrading in terms of performance so I switched to CM. When it's working well, it's more than enough on moderate usage, although I wouldn't expect more than 4-5 hours on intense screen on time.

i will then stick to stock-based one... my previous phone had 5 hours of screen time and it was so frustrating, because i need phone with minimum 7 hours of SOT

If you want such a good SOT, you will need to run KitKat with custom kernel. Lollipop on almost all phone does battery draining.
Rate this thread to express how you think the Nextbit Robin feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The Nextbit Robin feels light for its size, but is solidly built. It uses a smooth plastic all around, so it can be slippery if you have dry hands. A soft touch rubber coating, seen on phones like the Nexus 5, would have been an improvement. The raised volume buttons are clicky, responsive, and snug. The power button, which also houses the fingerprint sensor, is clicky and is flush with the body.
never thought about how much this would capture fingerprints on the back.. i have cleaned with alcohol wipes daily.
It's too slippery, and mine has a weird bump on the back.
My girl friend and I were backers of the phone through kickstarter.
We just received the devices a week or so ago and take good care of our electronics. We had them in tempered screen protectors and cases since unboxing and with a little over a week the colored portions of the device are deteriorating at an astonishing rate.
My electric has got what seems to be a scratch on the top portion, and my girlfriend's is starting to discolor (while in the bumps case) around the edges and has a random dent on the top.
Incredibly non-durable and disappointing to say the least.

It is still holding up. Appears too how the phone is developing stress cracks on the front speakers and by the charging port.
Sent from my Robin using XDA-Developers mobile app
Mine has unfortunately started to peel slightly around the camera and the speaker and a very strange crack has appeared beside the power button.
I don't know what else to say besides it feel really amazing in the hand and very high-quality and premium.
Mixed Reviews
So the Robin feels great, the phone fit perfect in my hand and the texture of the plastic used does feel pretty good. Its lightweight but still pretty solid for the material. Now as for the actual design of the product, paired with the processor and the fact that it seems to get pretty warm pretty quick, I have had some bad luck with the phone. I had the phone for about 4-5 days and used it relatively lightly, with the exception of streaming videos and your basic games. I noticed the phone would get really warm really quick. Upon flipping the phone over to check the back I noticed what seemed to be a scratch, which was odd as I have not taken the phone out of a case or even put it in my pocket with anything before a case was on it. So a couple more days went by and I noticed more "scratches". Now this seemed very weird. Upon looking into it further I noticed a bulge in the lower central part of the phone and the "scratches" were appearing bbetween the cloud logo, where the phone reached its hottest, and the bulge. So I reached out to Nextbit and they advised I get a replacement sent, which I did, however I noticed upon receiving the replacement there seems to be the same odd bulge in the same location as my previous phone. The stress marks kept growing on the old phone, and now it has me worried that the new replacement will be doing the same thing. I have attached some pictures of the stress marks on the phone before I sent it back to have it for documentation.
It's sad as I really enjoy the snappiness of the phone and the design of both the hardware and OS however I just think the phone could have been tested a bit more before being put out to production. Overall its a pretty solid phone and for the price point on amazon ($299) is a plus.
Hi all,
I just made a pretty weird discovery with my 5x. I was having issues with heat and poor performance over the past few months, and opened up the phone after having a boot loop issue (I resolved it after this). To try to lower temperatures, I put a very small amount of thermal paste (enough to cover the chip) over the RAM chip (it covers the snapdragon 808 that resides underneath it) underneath the metal shielding. After doing so, apps like Snapchat ran significantly faster and cooler. Has anyone else tried anything similar and had results like this??? If so, please let me know!

Don't try it!!! It could dry up and become crusty, or even worse, be conductive and cause a short circuit, damaging the phone.
I considered this, but it makes it so obvious that you've opened it up, I didn't since they extended the warranty. If I was beyond it for sure, I would. I'm beyond the 12 months, but not the 18 months, which my replacement device should theoretically fall into. I also briefly thought about slapping some on top of the metal cover and having the outer plastic cover mash it down to transfer more heat to the cover.
Also, when I took my prior 5X apart, I noticed the thin cover over the chips wasn't actually all metal. Over the big chip(s) it was actually a woven material or maybe made some other way. You can see through that part a bit if held up to the light. But it looked like metal so perhaps was metalic. The rest is metal. So I wonder if the thermal paste is actually transferring it to the metal. It seems like the semi translucent material is intended to let the heat out through it versus taking the heat itself. But thermal paste is going to take some heat away itself and maybe transfer it to the metal.
Though someone posted a picture of the board on another thread, and that one has a black cover instead of the silver version. Maybe it is all metal on newer production runs.

I'd love to, but my device fell into a bootloop and now i have the 4 cores patch on it so the temperatures wouldn't be accurate.
Yes, there is a performance boost, because the big cluster isn't thermal throttling so fast as always do, and neither gains temperature so fast.
I did a thread when i did it to my N5x, and i took some pictures.
See here.
Greetings, I know this post may sound absurd for some people, however, I play sometimes with my Pixel 6 Pro, and I experience some heat, I'm talking about 43-46° battery temp, what I do to avoid this is putting my case in the freezer for like 10-15m, and then put it back on for 5-10 minutes, then back to the freezer and so, with this I avoid heating and any thermal throttling at all, that's only less than a minute break every 15 or so mins.
Some results are:
41.9 degrees before doing it (without any case)
34.6 degrees after 2 minutes with the freezing cold case on, gaming, did not stop using the device
Buying a fan for the device is an option, but this is free, for some time this has been my way to cool down this and other devices.

Li batteries should never be charged below 40F.
Temperature extremes aren't good for the mobo and solder especially no lead solders get brittle when cold. The freezer treatment sounds like a bad plan...
Otherwise...
If the air is dry cradling it a damp microfiber cloth does the trick... desert survival.
A reusable gel ice pack?
I hold mine in front of the AC in the car if I have been using and it's hot.
Otherwise I just put it down a few minutes and walk away

Do you think the case in the freezer thing is a bad one? I've been doing that for years and worked well, had devices for like 2-3 years and they worked fine, however I don't want to expose my device to bad things, if there is any risk I'll stop doing that.

Yeah, that should work well, but if you have the phone at good temp and you do the case thing you will end the benchmark with a lower temp than before starting it, but yeah, it works

Those low temperature extremes probably aren't needed to effectively cool the device. Phone manufacturers are exempt from the leaded solder ban but may comply if they wish to. More temperature extremes mean more component expansion and contraction, in time it could cause a solder joint failure. Not an issue unless it fails...
Another potential problem could be the case it's self. My case's inner liner is stiff at room temperature and more so if cooled. As a result I'm careful taking on and off even warming it up to do so, and don't do it excessively. As best I can tell it doesn't flex the phone doing this as that could end badly.
Moisture condensation is another potential issue. Always assume a IP68 rated phone will leak, keep them dry. Including using a damp microfiber cloth... make sure it's damp not wet.
Forced air cooling is the safest. I try not to expose my phone to excessive temperatures as that's something somewhat within my control. I protect it in the winter and try to keep it at least 60F whenever possible.

You're welcome.
A gel cold pack with a cotton shop cloth in between might be easier and work better.
A continuous cold supply with 2 or more rotating.
