USB connection cycling. - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone. I have an odd issue that seems to pop up from time to time.
I have a refurb Epic, since my original died for some unknown reason, that seems to cycle the usb connection randomly. When plugged in to either a PC, wall or car dock with 3 different cables the phone will flash that it is USB connected many times as though it looses conection. The times that it does it and number of times are random. It has gone hours and all of a sudden does it 10 or so times a minute. Has anyone else heard of or seen this? I think the USB port may be bad.
I also thought maybe it was the battery, but I pulled the charger from the car dock and it persisted.
I decided to use custom gingerbread ROMs on this phone and have only noticed it on them. I will be trying stock froyo and if the problem goes away try leaked stock gingerbread as. Reference.
Sorry for the wall o text. I have been trying to figure it out for a few weeks now.

This was happening to me on some gingerbread roms. I went back to froyo and it stopped.

Looks like it is a gingerbread issue. Rooted Froyo stock has had no problems. Hopefully that does not make it to stock.

Phone only charges when off.

I started having a problem with my phone today after I flashed cyanogen mod nightly 114 where the usb wont recognize the phone or charge it. Also it wont charge when its turned on but it will charge when I'm using the HTC usb cable and its plugged into the wall while turned off. I have tried rebooting the phone, fixing the permissions, and going to a earlier backup but nothing seems to work now. It started happening right after I flashed.

I have the same problem. I am running CM7 RC1 and Savaged Zen SBC kernel. I thought it was the cable, but I tried many cables, many charges including OEM and get the same weird behavior. Also, I noticed if you have a good charge (let's say above 90%) and you charge it, it will sometimes charge while the phone is on without a problem.
I don't know if this is a ROM problem or not. I came from Ultimate Droid, which I didn't have a problem with, but the developer is MIA.
I will be flashing to another ROM this weekend and se if that fixes the problem.
This is pretty annoying!!
I flashed the stock EVO rom this weekend and I can confirm that the problem is a combination of ROM and charger/cables.
When I was using CM7, it didn't matter what cable/charger I was using, it was not charing. Light will come on when I plugged in the phone and it would go off in a few seconds if the phone was on. If the phone was off, it seemed to worked ok.
Now with the Stock Rom, I can charge it while the phone is on but only using certain charges (not all USB chargers work) and certain cables do not work. the OEM charger and cable works perfect, and also the OEM cable and certain chargers I have. I have also tried with other cables and chargers and it seems ok. I guess some cables are not ideal to charge the EVO. Some of these cables I bought on eBay, and they said they were supposed to work with the EVO.
Since RadioShack has now a trade program, I might exchange my EVO eventually and get the EVO 3D. It is faster, has more memory, allows to uninstall bloatware and eventually (August/September) it will be unlocked.

[Q] Gnex doesn't recognize I'm trying to charge it

Not sure if anybody has seen this problem when I plug in my phone to charge it doesn't always (once every 2 or 3 days) recognize that I'm charging it. When I shut the phone down it does recognize the charge and can then reboot and it'll continue charging. However if I reboot without plugging the phone into the wall briefly, then it'll continue not realizing that I'm trying to charge it.
This has been going on for about two weeks now (I've had the phone for about a month and a half). The phone is rooted, but otherwise it is stock. I do two small but noticeable scratches in the plastic, so I don't know if verizon will let me get an exchange.
Anyway my question is has anybody seen this before? I found a couple threads on the reverse condition (phone thinks its charging when its not), but nothing on this condition.
What cord are you using to charge it and what is the amps on the little power unit? I was having some trouble on the plug that negri gave me and I use my old HTC 1 amp plug with my new Sammy cord.
A. Try a difft power unit
B. Try a difft cord

It's probably the charger. One of my car chargers will do that. Also, this doesn't sound like the case, but be aware that your phone won't charge if it's extremely hot.
Probably the faulty usb port issue. It is no way to fix it without changing the port.
Happened to me once. What fixed it was taking out the battery for 5 min, then replace it, and power up. Someone else was having the problem and another person suggested the long battery pull. Worked for both of us.
I'll try the long pull and report back.
I use three different chargers. The factory samsung charger, a Seido Docking Station (powered by a generic USB charger), and a generic USB cable for charging from my computer. Condition has been present on all three.
Is it recognized by your computer? If not, the USB port is probably the issue. If it is, then the battery pull may fix it. If that doesn't, make a Nandroid and do a full system wipe and see if that helps. Have you installed any apps around the time you noticed the issue? If so, uninstall that app, reboot and see if that solves the issue.
Example, I had TweetDeck kill my GPS once. Literally, I used navigation, got where I was going, remembered I hadn't installed TweetDeck, installed it, tried using navigation and it was busted, uninstalled TweetDeck and Navigation worked fine. I rebooted, reinstalled TweetDeck and all was good. Quirky things happen sometime.
any news on this? my usb port has recently stopped working but it still charges

[Q] EXTREMELY weird issue! Any fix?

Hi, I have been trying to google for this issue for around 3 hours now and could only see one post that was remotely similar but offered no fix, so here goes, I am reluctantly posting.
Bought my Galaxy Nexus second hand last week and everything seemed fine, but decided I wanted to go stock (it was rooted when I got it), so I flashed stock IMM76i, but left bootloader unlocked.
After doing this, I got the dreaded signal loss issue, however it was slightly different. Signal was fine when the phone was on standby, but if it was connected to a wall charger or PC then it would lose signal in standby. I then heard that some people had got around this issue by going back to 4.0.2, so I did this. Still had the same issue.
I was getting sick so I left the phone for a few hours and used my Sensation but came back to the Nexus last night. I thought, 'mm, I wonder if it is still doing the same?' so I connected up to my laptop and it did not lose signal . However, on second check, I realised that it wasn't detected by the PC at all. No MTP, no driver popup, nothing in device manager, and not even charging!
Panicking, I ran upstairs and got my wall charger, plugged it in and the phone started charging. I then tried another USB cable (a one that was charging the Sensation whilst all this was going on) and again, nothing at all, not even charging when connecting to PC, but charges fine when connected to wall. I tried 2 different PCs, both of which worked fine with the Nexus 3 hours previously.
Here is the weirdest part. When the phone is switched off and connected to a PC, the computer sees it, installs the driver and it charges! The little white battery pops up. Also, the phone works perfectly fine in fastboot mode as I have since locked and unlocked the bootloader as well as installed 4.0.4 again, all having the same effect. So, the scenario:
Wall charger charges the phone
USB Cable connected to Windows and Linux doesn't detect the phone at all including charging when phone is on
Phone is detected by PC whilst off and will charge
Fastboot mode works perfectly
Signal issue seems to have resolved itself
This phone is driving me crazy
I need a lie down!
Apologies for the long post, just I am at my wits end about this. As I bought it second hand,I would imagine I wouldn't be covered by any warranties offered on the phone.
Thank you in advance if anyone knows how to fix this. I would imagine it won't be hardware as it works fine when the phone is not booted into android, but the wall charger also works fine, and the usb cable works with other phones.
It was this way before you went back to stock?.. Try a custom rom also..
Galaxy Nexus AOKP m5 Franco kernel m3
Could it be an issue with
a) the drivers on your pc? (Try reinstalling using the GN toolkit)
b) the voltage of your usb ports on the pc? (try using a powered hub).

a)Drivers should be fine, fastboot works perfectly. I would have thought that even without required drivers, it would still pick up a charge ?
b)Tried multiple PC's that the phone used to be detected on and pick up a charge, can't imagine they would all be broke. Will try a powered hub abit later when I get home

No it wasn't like this when I went stock, but it also wasn't like this for the first few hours I was stock, as this is when I had the signal issue. It was after leaving it for a while that the issue developed.
Thanks for the quick replies! Keep them coming
Well, you're not alone that's all that I can say, please don't let the conclusion of my link devastate you, the technicians in my country are idiots.
My switched off GNEX charges from PC only for few seconds and then restart the charging again. It's as good as it's not charging (can you confirm the same?)
the issue lies in ur KERNEL. try flashing another kernel in Android Development section, or switch ur ROM to third party such as AOKP or Slim ICS. It solves the problem, I promise. if u want to remain stock, I cant come up with another idea because flashing ROMs is always a fool proof method

Hi, thanks for that. I have just got my phone back from our technician and they found no fault! I tested it and it didnt work for me so rang them and they said they only tried charging from the wall charger not USB!! So 1 week and nothing! It is now going back. I have just tested and, when switched off, it charges continuously.

Tried loads of different roms, including AOKP and Tablet hybrid. Both had issues as well.
So what happened eventually? PCB replacement? :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Car charger problem. Says still charging after disconnecting

OK, so I have scoured the Internets and xda and haven't found the exact answer I am looking for and don't have anymore time to search. I have a car charger issue and hope someone can shed some light on the issue.
I have tried to different USB port car chargers and both have the same problem. They are both 1 amp, the second is a 2.1 but both ports only get 1 amp. Upon connecting it takes a good few seconds for it to recognize that it is charging. Upon disconnecting, it takes a good 10 seconds for it to show that it is not charging as in it still thinks it charging.
I don't have this issue with the oem charger nor a 6 year old LG charger that works great with this phone plus it being like 8 feet long. I have also gone through a couple cheap car chargers that didn't have this issue but the connectors go out quick. So I thought I would just get a usb port charger so I can use my oem cable but this is bothering me. Is this just what these little chargers do?
Thanks for any input.
Not sure if you're on AOSP/KP/CM, but I've had this issue on these roms once in a while, only with USB charging. I've never experienced it on the stock rom, and never while charging with AC.
i have that defect too even on stock firmware unrooted my mini port got bad and got it fixed and still does that
Sent from my useless no data sync gs3
I am Stock, unrooted.
Maybe one day I'll go back to the dark side Just couldn't find the perfect ROM. So cleared my counter, used kies to restore stock firmware and been running stock for the past month.
Thanks for your input already guys. It all helps.
A quick reboot always fixed the issue for me
Have rebooted and removed the battery and same thing. I also tried another usb port car charger that was in someone's car and same thing. I wonder if it's just my phone. It seems like the phone charges just fine, but it still worries me that something is wrong. So guess I will just have to sit and wait for someone to shed some more light. Thanks to all so far.
I am currently on vacation, but when I get home I am going to re-root my phone flash a few ROMs and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, it's a ROM issue. If it does, it's a phone and/or battery issue. Maybe someone can shed some light before then so I don't have to start over again
OK, so just rooted, flashed SlimBean and Lean Kernel and same thing is happening. So obviously its a hardware issue. Will update if I find out anything more before someone else does.

Charging Issue

So a couple days ago my Edge+ started acting up when trying to charge it. Most of the time I plug it in it doesn't register the power cord being plugged in. Other times I plug it in, it almost thinks that I'm putting the cable in/out every secord. It's weird.
At first I thought it was a bad cable or power brick, but quickly ruled that out. Then I thought maybe it's some kind of software issue so I did a hard reset, updated to the newest arter kernel, installed the newest Superstock rom, but still the same problem. I thought maybe it's the charging port, but I put it on a wireless charger and it cycles on/off every couple seconds or so. It's like I'm putting on the charger and taking it off, but I'm not touching it. I'm just letting it sit there. Last night I plugged it in, it actually detected the charger on first try and charged to 100%. Today, it's acting up again. I dunno what to do? Anyone ran into any similar issue?
A guy from a repair shop said maybe it's a faulty battery? The problem is that they don't have any parts for the phone at all, and I can't seem to find any replacement parts online either. The only thing I haven't tried it to restore it back to stock with stock kernel and rom.
Sorry for the long post, just seeing if anyone can offer any help or insight. Thx!
