[Q] Unable to Root - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi can someone help? I have the desire HD running stock gingerbread 2.3.3 on vodafone. Build no 2.36.161.12..I have searched every forum and tried every way to root the phone but failed . Has anyone actually managed to root their dhd from same stock set up as my phone?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Hi
What actually happens when you attempt to root? What is the actual error you experience?
Also, I think that the newer builds are not yet root-able but the developers are working on it round the clock.

Hi mate
Well I tried to downgrade using gingerbreak and the cmd prompt on my PC, but it doesn't seem to work this way think it said adb out of date on every command Line, but can't remember exactly, I also can't seem to successfully make a gold card but then I'm not sure how that works anyway......
Can u suggest a method that should definatly work?
When I had my HTC desire bravo it was easy to root & flash roms.
I appreciate your advice

Hi,
Do you have the latest SDK installed on your machine?
Your firmware build can be downgraded, its probably your system setup.

Sdk? Is that a driver? I don't know what that is then? I asumed that the HTC sync I had on my pc had the drivers?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Actually I remeber now I did try and.install Sdk on my pc running windows 7 but it said I needed extra java stuff to run it...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

SDK = Software Development Kit
If you download THIS FILE, and then install the SDK.
Once downloaded & installed follow Steps 1, 2b & 3 from THIS THREAD
For ease of use its probably best to install the SDK to C:\SDK or similar.

Thank you ill give it a go
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

if you have trouble instaling sdk, go to google and type: wiki cyanogen mod, on bottom of that page in information section is : howto: install the android sdk

Should I install the downgrade zip in section 3?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

yes, find [GUIDE] How to downgrade 1.7x/1.8x/2.x to 1.32.405.6

If your still having issues, I can try to do it remotely from your system.

You could? Ok, the Sdk is instaliing but I selected all the packages to install so its taking some time, don't suppose u can root it remotely ?

shall we have a go at doing it remotely then?

If you install TeamViewer on your PC I can do it from my end. I just need you there to plug/unplug the phone.
If you can cancel the install and reinstall with just these packages,
Code:
Android SDK Tools, revision 11
Android SDK Platform-tools, revision 5
SDK Platform Android 2.2, API 8,revision 2
SDK Platform Android 2.3.3 API 10, revision 1
Google USB Driver package, revision 4
Android Compatibility package, revision 2
If they have already installed then don't worry about it.

Andy
Do u mind if we do this tomorrow actually, I realised I have to be in work early.. do need to sleep
Really appreciate your help and look forward to sorting it
Regards phil

Not a problem Phil. Just PM me the TeamViewer details and we'll go from there.

I'll install team viewer ready for tomorrow..

[Q] Do i need the SDK and JDK if all I want is ADB?

Hi all,
Ive decided to have a 'proper' look at installing ADB but do I really have to install the complete SDK and then JDK ? Its not a problem if I have to just was hoping there might be a lighter way of doing it given what i'd actually use it for....
Update - ended up following steviewevies full SDK guide and it worked a charm......think it was the JDK/Eclipse jazz that kept putting me off....nice one anyway.....now to try root
Look in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835777 and it's in the attached files called EZ-MiniADB.zip , I'm not sure how it works so you'll have to read the thread.

The best Dhd rom

Hi folks,
I am new here and i am interesting to here from you which rom is the best for you.(battery life,speed..etc).
Thanx a lot
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
That is up to. If I were you, I would try different Roms.
If you like Sense then the best are Android Revolution, LeeDroid HD and Core Droid.
If you like Stock Android, the best are Cyanogenmod 6 (Android 2.2) and Cyanogenmod 7 (Android 2.3).
But in the end it is up to you...
I know ..tnx man.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
No problem mate.
If you are a newbie than you should use the Android Revolution HD because it is very close to the Stock Rom, it is fast, stable and has a good battery drain.
Just for info: There is a "Thanks" Button
I'm a noob and you cam see what i'm using

It's quite normal that newbies use the Android Revolution HD because it is, as I already said, very close to stock Rom.

You have to start with downgrading to 1.32.. because the 1.7.. can't be permrooted and root is the basis for everthing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Then you can root with VISIONary+, make Radio/ENG S-OFF, flash a custom recovery...
here are complete guides for you:

If you have question then ask them in these threads.
okee, starting: installing .netframework 4 on my windows 7 USB debugging is checked.
IF you have a branded device, you have to make a Goldcard. Use "mmc2" instead of "mmc1"!!
uhm i dont have a branded device, like t-mobile right?
so i dont have to make a goldcard?
I did follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537&highlight=root as mention and it works greate. Can browse my local partition, install radio, ROM, full contole over my phones files....

I had this problem as well and I solved it by rebooting. Try to reboot one time and try again, if it's still blackscreen try to reboot again. If this doesn't work I'll let anyone with better experience help you
No,no...like i said...after black screen now i have normal screen and use phone like before..i just want to ask...my phone is rooted? How i to know that?
Also, can i continue with next steps...s off and etc?
Tnx

SDK not connecting to DINC

Hello all ... I'm new to rooting and I'm having a problem with SDK recognising my phone ... I have been trying to use the steps in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709220 (How 2 - ADB, Rooting(reflash), Unrooting, Nandroid, Remove/Install App, roms, kernels) ... And I can not find the "android_winusb.inf" in the tools folder or the platform-tools folder ... I'm using sdk r10 and Windows Vista 64 ... Any help would be appreciated, Thank you ...
I modded the "android_winusb.inf" file in the sdk drivers zip and moved it to the platform tools folder ... I keep getting "The system cannot the path specified" in the cmd prompt when I type cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools === ...
EDIT: I also installed the My Touch 4g USB drivers and I no longer get the "Drivers not found" popup ...
Nevermind ... I searched the forums and got it rooted and installed Redemption ROM 2.4 with "Heart of the Sunrise" kernel ... Now I just need to get Clockworkmod working right ...

The only thing I can offer is to make sure you are in c:\sdk\platform-tools (or similar directory depending on install location) then do adb devices. My biggest problem was not being in that directory even though I had adb in the path (most likely incorrectly)

HTC One X Walkthrough anyone?

First and foremost, please know that I have searched and searched again for hours and really have exhausted what in my opinion is my skill level for the rooting process. Previously hacked a PSP but that seemed easier than this.
I have tried the one click method and I have tried the HTCDev method. Both to no avail. I've run the .bat, I've tried the cmd cd Download cd OneXRoot... I couldn't get the One click .exe to run on my Windows XP even after installing .net framework. Can anyone help? I will divulge phone software versions, firmware etc if anyone decides to help me... And please only comment if you can specifically help... No trolls, no haters, no unconstructive comments.
Sorry for the noobism...
Thank you.

hi , try using this it should be what you need if you are going to flash custom rom's go to htc dev to unlock bootloader thats the first and foremost thing you need to do . Htcdev is just to unlock your bootloader and nothing else
http://onexroot.com/one-x-root/how-to-root-one-x/
if i helped you say thanks =)
What issue are you currently having with 'HTCDev'? Did you successfully unlock the bootloader?
Try checking this post out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832891
Also, check this out, more specifically:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439
Hope that helps
I promise you all those methods do not work. I tried to run the root.bat access denied. I tried the one where you open up cmd and type cd Download, access denied... Finally I tried One Click but the .exe wouldn't open due to wrong .net framework, which I then downloaded but I was told by XP was not able to install 4.0.3...
Obviously I am going to need a work around on this but like I say One Click is no good for me... I'm going to reply again with my phone's info... I'm guessing the cmd way will be best to eventually get to work for me...

have you got your unlocktoken.bin from HTC Dev? May be best to do it manually
---------- Post added at 08:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:17 PM ----------
have a careful read through this, this is the most complete guide for rooting manually, if you don't want to backup to start with you can go straight for unlocking your bootloader (after that to installing the recovery, then to installing the rom )

Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
If I do this and unlock the downloader will it give me root too?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Hi mate, firstly u need to install the SDK etc,
Then you unlock your bootloader
Then you can install the custom recovery
Then you need to install the super user app (or SU etc) This will give your rom Root privileges (i.e you can install mods etc) This is not installing a custom rom
If you want to install a custom rom you can skip the step above as all custom roms have these root privileges.
Download your rom and stick it on your SD card
Make a backup through the custom recovery (you can revert back to stock if things go tits up)
Boot into fastboot and flash the boot.img via fastboot commands (or use a fastboot kit if one is supplied with the rom)
Go into recovery, flash your rom and reboot
The above is just summarizing whats on the guide I gave you so you should know what order you need to do things and where to look on the guide
If I do this and unlock the bootloader**** sorry predictive text!
