What's the difference between debrand and root? - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's the difference between debrand and root?
Thanks
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App

Debranding is removing your operators Custom ROM, along with its custom stuff (normally bloatware), and, installing a generic ROM in its place. Note that if your Wildfire is Sim Locked, Debranding will not unlock it.
Rooting is gaining complete control over your system. (Root access, as called in Linux). Similar to Jailbreak in iOS.

Thanks!!

There is no free solution yet, you need to pay for an unlock code

Sorry but this isn't correct. You can't unlock it by flashing a Ruu. I you need to buy unlock code or use a xtc clip at present.

I had my Wildfire unlocked using revolutionary method... Previously I was locked to Orange UK.. I just flashed the RUU (Asia India) from shipped roms first; then I used the revolutionary tool - AlphaRevX.... Only issue I had was no mobile network.. I flashed the latest radio img for wildfire using fastboot... I never bought or used an unlock code from anyone...

Are you sure it was locked in the first place?
The cid is hidden away in a partition we can't get to, I don't think revolutionary changes the cid because if it did the alpharev team would know about it and it would have been mentioned before, an ruu flashes original software which is also most probably locked as the carriers would complain to google for making such a simple way to unlock there phones.

Branding

Hey guys, I'm getting wildfire with Vodafone branding.
If I flashed a custom Rom, would it unbrand it, or would I have to use a goldcard method?
Sent from my X8 using XDA App
Custom ROMs will debrand it. But, you will probably have to debrand it anyway using a Goldcard, because AlphaRev X is not working on all branded Wildfire's bootloaders.
How would I make one?

Follow this guide, it will install a generic unbranded WWE ROM, as well as prepare your device for use with AlphaRev X, should you go for it:

Thanks, its gotta be rooted first to do the debranding, is there any way of doing this easy.

Root & Bootloader

I´ve been reading posts about the process of rooting and the bootloader but still i cant figure what are the differences.
If i want only to root my device, is it neccesary to unlock the bootloader using htcdev?
I dont want to install custom roms, i only want to gain root for certain apps in the market.
In order to root you must unlock your bootloader with htcdev I'm afraid

Root HOX

Does anyone has a way or rooting a HTC One X running JB without unlocking its bootloader?
Not possible
only possible if ur device is s-off.
Sent from my One V
I know that,.but it's unlikely to have one so that's why i didn't mentioned it !
I'm surprised you knew that, given that you thought it might be possible to root your phone without unlocking the bootloader! You need an unlocked bootloader to flash a pre-rooted custom rom.

S-off temproot query

I am fully stock. Now this viper addiction is not letting me live with stock rom. I need to S off, root, and flash the rom.
My query:
If i S-off via temproot method, do i need to root again in order to flash the rom or any mods?
If yes, how do i do that please?
Or just S off is enough to flash the rom?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You don't need to S-OFF to flash roms just have a twrp or philz recoveries and root and flash away....
Actually i don't wish to have my bootloader unlocked by htcdev... Want to keep it locked

You cant flash a rom without unlocking your boot-loader. S-off is needed only if you want to make any changes to the hboot. So all you need to do to flash a rom is unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery and then don't forget to take a nandroid backup before installing the new rom.
If i use http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/ method, do i need to unlock bootloader using htc dev?
Also using the temp root or weak sauce method, do i need to root it permenantly again? And then i need to flash a recovery as well?
I am a bit confused in the process...
Dont know which steps to follow and in which order.

As far as I understood, WeakSauce only works for the Verizon version, which is also the only one that really needs it, since you cannot unlock the bootloader.
Firewater should work even on temproot, but S-OFF won't magically root your phone. If you S-OFF with WeakSauce, then you can manually unlock the bootloader without going to HTCDev, there is a thread here around, very easy to find. After doing this, you can easily flash a custom recovery and perma-root the phone.
Tried looking for threads regarding s off....
I have International m8. I want to S-off, without using htc dev I want to unlock the bootloader and get perm root.
Anybody can help me on this please.

As far as I know, there is no known way of achieving this yet. The only temproot method I am aware of is WeakSauce, which should only work on the USA Verizon phone. However they write that trying it out on other variants of the phone should not do any harm. Go and try with it. I tried it on mine and it failed (application crashed), then I gave up and unlocked it with HTCDev.
If you manage to do this, please come back and tell us how you did, there may be other ways to temproot this phone, but they haven't made it to this forum yet.
WTH...
As i have done S off to M7/One X, i thought it would be easier to follow the steps... but , I am stuck with the drivers.
I uninstalled HTC Sync(firewater instructions)
But, I am not getting the drivers for HTC.
Also, ADB commands arent working for me anymore....ADB DEVICES say NO DEVICE FOUND....
I have Windows 7, and on the same laptop I have SOff my M7 few months back .....
ANY help with the links would be appreciated
