[Q] How to debug CWM backup hang? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

About 75% of the way through "Backing up datadata..." backup hangs. Last thing echo'd is something like "col$span `roi`.perlindd"
I'm running stock ROM (ooted via unresolved3). Tried re-installing CWM manually, and also via ROM Manager. Result is always the same.
7+ GB of internal storage is free, and 14GB of 14.8 usable on /sdcard is free.
How can I debug this? I need a backup so I can try one of the many alternate ROMs.
Thanks!

Never heard of this error. And personally, I don't think you need a backup of your current stock rom. If you really want to go back to stock, try virtuous or liberty as they are both stock.
Sent from my HTC Incredible

No, I want a full backup before I start screwing around. I rely on this phone for work, and they foot the monthly bill.
So I managed to find that my /datadata partition actually has a file called col$an`roi`,pberidd:
cd /datadata
/datadata # ls -la col*
-rw-r--r-- 1 9985 9985 18446744072767679240 Jan 12 1980 col$an`roi`,pberidd
Clearly busybox is not calculating file size, correctly... the fact that the date says 1980 coupled with the odd name leads me to believe it's a garbage file that I can remove. Going to give that a try...

SOLVED
removing the bad file did the trick. Phone works fine, and I was able to make backups in RA and CWM (and ROM Manager).
Off to play with some ROMs...

[HELP] Apps force closing like crazy

Today I just tried to install some fonts using Root Explorer and all of a sudden I was stuck in boot loops. So I tried to boot into recovery mode and there was an update.zip on my device (probably from when I was originally rooting) which I think the recovery mode ran. After that, I was in clockwork and I flashed a new font.zip file and that still left me in a boot loop state.
I fixed the boot loop by manually changing permissions on DroidSans.ttf and DroidSans-Bold.ttf to match the other fonts and change owner/group to root:root.
This stopped the boot loop but now every time I boot my phone it force closes all my apps that were previously on sd. I'm not sure why this is happening and it might be other apps that are also not on my sd. It is also not showing all of my installed apps and Launcherpro no longer runs and I am stuck with default htc sense launcher. I would prefer to not wipe the entire phone to fix this.
I have tried a different sd card with the same data and I have also tried formatting the sd card and copying my files back on. Still stuck with force close errors. I am not sure what to do at this point. Any help?
Try fix permissions.
I have tried running the fix_permissions script. Didn't seem to work. Unless there's another method you are referring to. I am unable to launch ROM Manager and it seems like all of my apps are 'new' and never launched before from what they show. Including my alarm settings, those are missing too.
Think I'd restore a backup taken prior to all the font changes. You did make a backup, didn't you?

I do have a backup but unfortunately its a little bit old and I would rather fix this if possible. It feels like some folder is missing permissions. Because even stock Google talk crashes and market crashes when I try to view an app but I can search around if I want.
Another route I can go is to backup my data for apps and then install a new Rom as I have been wanting to. This would allow me to fix my problems but I need to know what folders I have to manually backup for saves.
Well some good news. After messing around with permissions on some files on the sdcard I was able to restore my notification sound back and also able to make GTalk work properly. So it looks like there is hope yet.
Where do apps store settings such as configuration, db, etc?
It looks as if my data/data partition is wiped? I'm not sure what happened but I guess that means all my app saves are gone.
Am I right to assume that?
I used this application NotEnoughSpace made by a xda member and using it to symlink some of my apps from data partition to a new area on emmc seems to work. However when I try to restore back to my data partition, it doesn't work.
So this leads me to believe that the permissions on my data partition are off and I need to change the permissions, owner, and group for the data partition and all files inside it. The command would be:
Code:
chmod 664 data/*
chown root:root data/*
And run this while outside of the main data folder. As long as the right owner/group is root:root.
Can someone confirm?

No ROM Manager downloads [SOLVED]

Apparently no one else is having this issue so it's gotta have something to do with what I'm doing, and I can't figure it out. My problem is that when I press download ROM in ROM manager, the only manifests it retrieves are the all device ones, which only include the two superuser binaries. It doesn't actually download or display the espresso manifests. I checked my build.prop to make sure everything said espresso, not something else, and it does. There was ONE thing that said htc_espresso, but no one else is having the issue so it can't be my build.prop. I have a premium license, and advanced mode is enabled, and there are no options in the settings menu to set the manifests manually. Erghhh. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't see why it just doesn't show up for me. I just did a full wipe before I flashed cm7 RC1 last night, so it can't be that.
Edit: figured out part of the problem. Apparently, it relies on you actually installing clockwork recovery, which I have avoided doing, one, because I have my cache bind mounted to data, so when it tries to flash update.zip from /cache/download, it fails, and my roms don't install, and two, I use cw3, and it's permanently flashed. So I have just been manually overriding the installation, which is why it doesn't show rom downloads. Any workaround to this, or some way to put the cw3 img into a zip?
Edit 2; solution: Took some hoop jumping and a LOT of tedious nandroiding and such, but I finally got it to work. In the end, I had to raise my cache from 1.5 mb to 2.5 mb and push the update.zip for 2.5.0.7 recovery to /cache, while in recovery (can't do it while booted, since /cache is just bound to /data/cache, hence the whole issue in the first place). So, when you reboot into recovery from rom manager, yes, it still copies an update.zip to what it THINKS is /cache, but is actually /data/cache, but it doesn't matter since I've already pushed a pre-existing update.zip to the REAL /cache (partition scheme is now 140 mb /system and 2.5 mb /cache, only 1mb of /data lost)
Ultimately, the issue with no downloads was that I had overridden the installation of clockworkmod recovery, so ROM manager showed for the version as clockwork unknown, which I guess meant unknown device as well. Once I installed cw recovery via rom manager, downloads began appearing again. I re-fastboot flashed cw2 over cw3, since it was causing compatibility issues with ROM Manager. If anyone is going to try this solution however, make a nandroid, it corrupted my entire internal storage and I had to restart without a nandroid, redoing mtd and everything. Thank god for titanium backups, eh?

[Q] Recovery not restoring data

hi, i need help restoring my backup in cwm 3.0.2.8.
The system partition restores fine but none of my apps or anything get restored. I've tried different versions of cwm and none of them have worked. I know i can just restore my apps with my backup or titanium but i shouldnt have to and i forgot to before i made the backup.
It doesnt even restore any if my contacts, texts, etc. It seems like its just restoring the rom with what ever mods and tweaks i had applied. This has happened with multiple roms so i reckon its a fault with cwm. Also when restoring just the data in cwm it doesnt say "Restore complete!"
Anybody got any suggestions?
Anybody got any suggestions?
How are you restoring your ROMs?
Your contacts should be backed up with your Google account.
They are backed up but cwm should restore everything. After i restore it asks me to login to my google account, select my time-zone, etc.
Im restoring from recovery.
It seems like cwm is crashing while restoring my data partition because the screen goes black whilst still showing the rom manager icon and it goes back to the inital screen of recovery like i just booted into it.
Have you checked your SDcard for errors?
There are hundreds of people who use ClockworkMod Recovery without issue. (excusing 3.0.2.5)
Could be something as simple as a couple of bad sectors on your card.
I recently formatted it before i made the backup, how would i check for any more errors?
Try HERE. Its in Russian. So you'd need to visit via Google or use Chrome.
I downloaded but i dont have a clue how to use it
Read through the manual.
Or you could follow this guide HERE, I'm pretty certain that the first tool would be more accurate.
I tried the russian one but i got access denied so im doing the windows method. If none of this works, is there a way to manually extract the files from the .img file? I mainly want the data from my apps because i hav around 300
How are you connecting your SDcard to your computer? I just ran a test using ,
Code:
flashnul G: -T
It worked fine, that was connected via USB cable with the card mounted as a drive.
No problems which I'm pretty pleased with, now just to transfer my data back.
I forgot to run CMD as admin, its running now
EDIT: I didnt get any errors
If the SDcard is fine. Then I'd reflash CWM Recovery.
I have. The only reason I flashed .2.8 was because of this problem. I have to send my phone to HTC on monday for repair so when I get I back (20 days later) Il start again from fresh. For now I'm gonna unroot and s-on etc etc... I hate sense.
Thanks a million for your help though!
Question: If HTC swap my phone with another, will my backup still work with the new one?
Off topic, I point blank refused to wait 21 days + for a repair. After some wrangling got an exchange. Sadly the exchange handset had severe case misalignment issues. Refused that also.
Yes your backup will still work. It doesn't matter what handset you use. The backup isn't tied to it.
Haha the speaker for calls doesn't work anymore so i hav to send it back. 20 days is gnna seem like forever lol. I'm gnna hav to look for my Nokia 3310. It's like 10 years old and its never failed me once.
As for my back up, when I do get my phone back i need to go through my apps and delete what I don't want.....or I could buy a bigger mem card and setup A2SD. Is there no way to browse inside the data.img file from the backup?

Restore TWRP .ext4.win to Windows or Linux?

I have a backup made with TWRP 2.6.0.0 of boot/data/system that were saved as .ext4.win files by booting into TWRP and doing a backup.
However, when I tried to browse the file using Nandroid Manager 1.4.1, most (but not all) of the app directories in /data/data/{packagename} are missing their actual data. They have a lib dir that's a <link>, but nothing else. However, some apps DO appear to have their normal and expected data. I could understand if NONE of them did... but I'm mystified as to how SOME could have data, but others that I know for a fact store data in /data/data/{packagename} are coming up empty.
I can think of a few possibilities:
* For some bizarre reason, TWRP didn't back up the files for certain apps. Unlikely, unless Illusion 4.2.2 (based on SlimRom/AOSP 4.2) was doing something weird with symlinks that confused it.
* Nandroid Manager 1.4.1 mangled the backup files while uncompressing them. Oh ${deity}, I hope this isn't the case. It never even occurred to me that it might try to uncompress the originals "in-place" and delete the original copy when I ran it and gave it the OK to uncompress them first.
* Nandroid Manager 1.4.1 uncompressed them fine, but for whatever reason can't explore the uncompressed backup properly.
I copied the .ext4.win files to Windows and tried finding something that can explore them, but I'm coming up blank. I tried ext2explore from Sourceforge, but it silently ignores me when I try to browse to the .ext.win file as a filesystem to mount.
Any ideas what to try next, either Android-side (Nandroid Manager 1.4.1 itself is the problem, and hopefully didn't mangle the backups themselves by attempting to uncompress them) or Windows-side?
Update: I have another theory. At the time I did the backup, my phone was bootlooping (it made it up to the converging-diverging RGB spotlight animation, then stayed there forever). To reboot, I had to 3-finger it (power+home+down or up, don't remember which one I used at the time).
I'm wondering whether it might be a case of TWRP backing up the raw image of a dirty ext4 partition that had uncommitted data in the journal, and the recovery tools that I'm using to explore it for individual files are blindly mounting it like an ext2 volume & causing any file written by an actively-running application to show up as "gone" instead of showing the old version.
If that's the case, would treating the .ext4.win file like the output of 'dd', then running an ext4 repair tool on it, be likely to fix it? I'm somewhat familiar with issues like this, but I've never actually had to deal with one head-on, so I'm a total n00b when it comes to the details of mounting a Linux filesystem from a dump file and allowing Linux to fix it as if it were rebooted into a dirty filesystem.

low storage space

I rooted my phone and installed the stock detoxed Rom (I'll find the link to the Rom later), but ever since my phone shows I have very little internal memory and isn't using my internal card for my apps so I can only have about 5 to 10 apps installed at a time depending on the size of the apps.
I tried the lucky patcher and it didnt fix it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I tried a different rom and had the same problem
The phone is showing I only have 760mb of application space
What JB version rom are you running? and what recovery version?, might be the corruption bug with wrong recovery.
Another thing to check is with a root enabled browser, check the /LOST.DIR in /storage/sdcard0/ and /storage/sdcard1/
if there is files in the LOST.DIR folder delete them, it will return the lost space, but if there is lots of files in the LOST.DIR is most likely a sign of corruption.
I had an issue similar to this a week or two ago with stock cm10.2 nightly. Full wipe of system and data fixed it for me.
hmm well this week has been a nighmare lol.
I tried installing a different ROM and it didnt help the space issue, and it would freeze then reboot every time i went into the gallery. So then i cleaned everything again and reinstalled my old ROM because I was at work i didnt have much options at the time.
Then i was having random reboots, and then endless boot loop, and all kinds of random problems, not being able to get any service... ect.
So now im home im trying to reload stock with Kies and i got an error. So im about to put it in download mode and try to connect to kies again and see what happens, worst case looks like ill be using odin.
Im thinking its a problem with TWRP.... idk whats going on.
Heres one ROM i tried and i couldnt connect to my service provider.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344942
This is the ROM that would freeze and reboot when i went to the gallery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2481542
And heres the one i have been running for a while and default back to... what im running right now until i can get it back to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226860
just reset everything using odin and its having the same problems... Completely stock now, not rooted at all.
Low space, (this is completely stock i have zero apps isntalled besides factory)
If i go to application manager it says 2.00 GB used 0.00 free space.
If i go to Storage it says total space 1.97gb, applications 153mb. available space 1.88mb
Idk i think i may have caught a virus...
Im going to move all my pictures and music off of it and format everything i can.
If you are still using an older recovery, I could bet that you have the corruption bug, when using any JB 4.3 based rom, such as the one you linked (United Basics) you must have a newer recovery or the chance of corruption is just a matter of time.
See this link for more info straight from TC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2412652
I'd suggest either downloading their recovery if you like CWM or get TWRP v2.6.1.0 recovery and flash the *.tar while in download mode with Odin, after you have a 4.3 compatible recovery then do a complete wipe (Advanced), including System and internal SD card (first copy pics/movies/music etc to computer), then copy back the rom you want to use and flash it along with the proper gapps, the proper gapps version/date will be based upon which rom you flash, check here if not sure: http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps
I'm also having this problem with storage space.
I'm on CM10.2, and have the 4.3 compatible TWRP installed. Prior to installing Cm 10.2 (a few weeks ago), I fully wiped /data /system /cache /dalvik, and wiped internal storage. I'm not able to update any apps, as I'm using 700MB for apps, but less than 200MB available out of the 1300MB that should be free.
I've done everything I should have, by fully wiping on a 4.3 compatible TWRP. Going to check for Lost.dir files now.

Woo! 1.3GB free space recovered! My /data/lost+found was most of it. Hopefully it was a flashing glitch and not a sign of bad flash storage.

I had to do the same thing when I upgraded my 2.3 stock rom to CM10.1.3. Either use ADB shell or a root enabled explorer to remove the contents within the lost+found folder:
Code:
sudo rm -f *
(WARNING! Make **SURE** you are WITHIN the lost+found folder BEFORE issuing this command).
