wired tether app instead of built-in internet sharing

Hi, i've rooted my phone with r3.1 paul's rom. I tried installing wired tether apk to use but failed. I want to use it because the in-built internet sharing needs htc sync installed while the other just plug in and let windows install the necessary driver without addition htc sync installation. Is it because the necessary kernel is not installed? Just want to ask is there any way to do it?
Thank you

android newbie with tech and stategy questions :-/

Hi All
Although I've been around Linux since Red Hat 4 and have worked with pocket pc's and phones since the halcyon days of pocket pc 3 (old cassiopeia E125's, hp journada and the like) I have only been an android user for about 60 hours!, coming in from WM6.1 on a Raphael.
In order to get my Desire ready for my business use I have 2 things that I need to resolve with a fair degree of urgency. But admit that trying to do so has lead to both "roadmap" questions and technical issues.
I need to get openvpn running on my desire, along with Bluetooth PAN based networking. I have a workaround for this week in so far as I have my Linux Netbook tethered via USB to my Desire, and run openvpn from an xterm but the way my business works, I need to get that built into the desire - The "needs" driver fro the bluetooth modem is working with a customer supplied laptop where I am supposed to read my "corporate" email using my own modem , but am not allowed to connect any USB data device / install any 3rd party software to the laptop (go figure!!!!) the "customer laptop" has bluetooth but no wifi (card removed and a business specific card in its place)
SO... step one seemed to be "root the desire"
This I have done. It was an 0.80 / 1.21.. build device and seems to be fine
However, I am mindfull that froyo is around the corner and also that since rooting the device I am getting notifications of updates, so my first questions are:
1) can I safely apply the OTA updates on my rooted device please?
2) when (if?) the "official" froyo release comes out, can I safely upgrade to that
and retain root privileges ?
3) is it worth going the "cooked rom" route to obtain froyo more quickly please ? or is it sufficient to install A2SD and resove my core need for it ?
Step 2 was to install some software to enable bluetooth PAN based Network sharing...
I have tried a couple of apps
pdanet specifically says that it uses (when you set the appropriate option) bluetooth PAN, but my ubuntu lucid based netbook on ever finds the DUN (dial up networking) profile
the paid version of bluTether (or was it tetherBlu ?) refuses point blank to start so has been uninstalled. Need to either contact the developer or get a refund
So my next questions are :
3) Is there an app that someone has used successfully, with an ubuntu lucid based pc, to bluetooth PAN tether their netbook to their desire droid please ?
4) Is there a howto (as I haven't found it when googling) please ?
perhaps the most important oen to crack for me though is openvpn.
I have installed the openvpn app and gui from the market, but I read here that the desire does things differently and that I need a zip file with some updates and the "recovery console" to enable them and resolve the issues with a shell script.
try as I might - I cant find a reference to this "recovery console" , it sounds like it gives shell access to the desire either locally or remotely so ...
5) can someone please explain where I find the recovery console ?
many thanks in advance
cheers!
MW0CQU
I'll answer some of your questions for you, the rest I'll leave to someone who knows more

You can install an OTA update on a rooted handset, but you will lose root. If you use a custom rom, you will not be able to install an OTA update.
It depends on what you want from a Froyo rom. There are a few fairly stable ones, but none work 100% yet. The closest to 100% would be DJ Droid froyo with sense rom.
So if stability is a concern I'd personally go for Pays 2.1 rom with A2SD.
Edit: the recovery console is a custom recovery that you either flash to the handset using the unrevoked method, or via an update.zip file on the root of your SD card. Another is via a market app. called Rom Manager.
There was an older method of pushing the recover to the handset via usb, but this can lead to the usb brick so should be avoided.
Do a search on fakeflash or unrevoked.

[Q] KUF help

Hi,
I had version 6.2.1 and i root it and everything was great could use the Market (Play) and so on , after upgrading i could still use the market and install things although i read that upgrading to 6.3 kills the root , nevertheless i did KUF and it worked ok and i get the TWRF and i can also get into it , however i would like to know how can i know if my Kindle has been root, entering the Market i see the same application and everything is working OK .
so first question:
1. after KUF how can i know that my kindle has been rooted correctly
2. after finishing the KUF my computer doesn't recognize the Kindle not matter what i do , even try to re-install he drives - strange btw i see in the device manager android phone - android ADB interface , i'm trying a fresh OS.
3. how come i cant see all application in the market only some of them, is it cause the market can see that it's a Tablet
Thanks
Blacknasa
One more small issue
I can transfer many application that arent visible in the market like for instance Kayak however i when i try to install them i got an error that application didn't install, i don't know why , anybody ? is it any log that i can check ?
Tanks for the Help
Blacknasa
To tell if you are rooted, download and install "Terminal Emulator" from the market. From the terminal type "su" without quotes. If your prompt changes from $ to #, or you get a "Superuser" request, you are rooted.
As far as the Market is concerned, only apps that are known to be compatible with your device will show (unless you edit your build.prop). Some will still work but you'll have to download them from other sources i.e. Google search NameofApp.apk...just stay away from paid apps with this method.

Vsun i9 rooting

Hi, just received an Vsun i9 (also announced as Peter Pan) bought from China (Aliexpress). MTK6577 1Ghz, 512Mb 4Gb ROM, Android 4.0.4
It came without Play Store (and crashes if installed manually) , the google account doesn't sync, etc. etc. so it's the kind of phone chinese goverment loves (unfortunatelly for me)
I've tried to root with Superoneclick and z4root, but didn't suceed
I tried to install alternative market, like Getjar, but it seems it calls to Play Store apk, and also crashes with some downloads
Any ideas will be welcome

Thanks for the suggestion.
The Micromax A68 seems to be based on a non 3G chipset and is not dual core (MTK6577 is) should it work?

I looked for Micromax A68 in the forums and saw your post about unlocking it ... but probably because I am a newby I and never rooted before got lost among so much roms and downloads and din't manage to unlock (at least yet)
Anyway thank you for showing me the path, will keep investigating, I suppose it's part of the fun, even when my wife doesn't like having an android phone without acces to market
Finally I managed to root this Vsun i9, using Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18
Now the cellphone is rooted, and with Super User installed, and also installed root explorer.
Next problem is that Play Store keeps crashing if installed, the Google account still doesn't sync and most of the solutions I found require copying files to /system/app , but when using Root Explorer I am not allowed to write on that folder.
By investigating, I understand I will need to install the gapps package (or install a rom that work with this phone), if I want to have the syncing and play store,
Can someone give me some clues about how to proceed next?
----
Just adding some useful info for people with same model.
When trying Superoneclick (that was always freezeing on Zerg Rush Step #7 on my Windows8), I was asked to execute as administrator.
I thought it would be good idea to run as administrator also Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18, but was always receiving errors from the batch script, so I just thought it was not working,
Finally excuted once as normal user, choosed the "1) Normal", and that was all, my phone rooted!.
Don't forget to turn on the USB debugging option on the phone options.
I found that with Root Explorer there's a "mount r/w" option that let's you full access to system folders XD
Hello! I am thinking on buy this phone. Can you tell me how does it works? What do you think in general terms?
Is it a good phone? How about camera?
I have found the last ROM V0013 "VSUN_MT6577_4X4_OV5647_R007_02_CHINESE_V0013_TXD.rar" in a Chinese forum. Is it your phone rom?
If I update with this rom, can I root using Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18 after that?
Thanks you so much!
Sorry for my English!

Hoi Hans:
Try it with SRSroot setup (google the program) install and let the program do the work for you
You will need internet on the pc that root the phone but it works.
And now google playstore
- Step 1: Uninstall google playstore.apk
- Step 2: Enable 'USB debugging' on your device (you can find this in the settings menu)
- Step 3: Enable 'Unknown Sources' on your device (Also under settings)
- Step 4: Connect your device to the computer (If needed install the android drivers)
- Step 5: Click on one of the ROOT options in this software (you can choose between supersu or superuser), and wait till it's finished.
- Step 6: Download root explorer.apk and install it on your device.
- Step 7: Download google playstore.apk and copy this file into the system/app/ map of your phone with root explorer.
When it's not allowed to past the file look at the top of the screen and change the properties of root explorer to read and write (mount r/w to mount r/o).
- Step 8: Change now the permissions of that app to
Owner = read write
Group = read
Others = read
- Step 9: Then install the playstore.apk from this place en restart your phone when done.
- Step 10: Now you have a full working playstore app on your mobile

I have an old mobile can I update/install new version of android?

I have sony ericson xperia and can't install an app, I've tried updating android but then I get "could not connect to network" even when wifi works just fine. Can completely new os (android) be installed on mobile via pc and if so how?
Nobody for realz?
you can try and install the last supported google play for your android version, if its GB 2.3 it could be play store 5.3, look it up in the webs, then to install it you have to download it on your PC and use flashtool to install it in case you dont also have a file explorer to install it directly from your phone.
