[Q] How to restore nandroid after flashing 2.37.707.3 - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I flashed the asia rom RUU "RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.37.707.3_Rad i o_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_188759_signed ".
Now I totally regret and wish to either (1) restore to my earlier ARHD rom backup saved via ROM Manager and/or (2) install/flash older ROM version
Device: HTC Desire HD 2.37.707.3 with S-ON
Steps taken so far:
- I have tried all the various guides but I can't seem to S-off and/or root my HTC Desire HD.
- Download and run various older versions of "RUU_1.72.405.3 or 2.36.405.8 or 1.32.405.6_signed.exe" but unable to update
- Unable to restore my backup via ROM Manager / Clockwork as it requires root access. But the backup file is in my SD card, any way out?
Any advice please?
Thank you.

Unfortunatley at the moment theiris no way to downgrade 2.37 and above to get root/soff So for now you are stuck until the revs figure it out

Just walked out from HTC Singapore HarbourFront.
HTC frontline said: "Unable to downgrade from Android 2.3 to 2.2 as advised by technical engineers due to different bootloader and may damage the motherboard."
Me: well, downgrade the bootloader as well.
HTC: As advised by our technical team, it is not allowed.
Me: ok, I bought this device as Android 2.2. I just want to reset back to original version.
HTC: "Unable to downgrade from Android 2.3 to 2.2 as advised by technical engineers due to different bootloader and may damage the motherboard."
Me: so what other alternatives? Can I escalate this to your manager?
HTC: I'm sorry sir. You have to write in via email.
Me: ok, what is the email address?
HTC: sir, there is no email address, but you can use the email us button on our website.
Me: THANK YOU.

because I OTA updated to 2.3 gingerbread and find it more worst, den go to service centre and ask can downgrade to 2.2 or not, they said cannot, only way is change motherboard, den I said OK to replace motherboard, that all..

thanks for the update dongster. Then I shouldn't waste the trip to go there. I suggest then to buy each dev a beer. maybe it would speed things up.

Tried most of the methods mentioned online to no success..

The only thing I can think of... Do you have ENG S-Off? If you are not sure, go Bootloader and see if you have it or not. If you have it my friend, your problem is solved! You can flash CWM recovery via Fastboot command (in Bootloader mode) and then boot into recovery and restore your Nandroid backup!
Goodluck

has there not been a way to root the latest update??? its a good job i was on orange and recieved barely any updates.

100% confirmed solution. i followed the following methods and it works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15290453&postcount=1828
Create a Goldcard
Download this ROM - Mirror
Put the PD98IMG.zip onto the root of your SDCard
Boot phone into Bootloader (hold volume down whilst power on), follow the steps and continue to update
(I encountered an issue here, so I tried my luck with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003 => Section 2b [For Gingerbread ROMs, 2.x] and continued with following and was able to downgrade)
When it has completed and your phone boots up, download stock 1.32 PD98IMG.zip ROM
Delete the previous PD98IMG.zip from your SDCard. Put the 1.32 PD98IMG.zip onto the root of the SDCard
Boot phone into Bootloader, follow the steps and continue to update
Enjoy~

Can.someone please give me detailed instructions on how to root the device without upgrading the radio as I really don't have a clue. Have managed each time to downgrade the radio and flash back to generic rom, am however wanting to root the device.

You'll need to use a goldcard root an orange branded desire, without it, the flash will fail.

Just look for a ROM that states 'no radio's in the title, that way it'll keep your current working radio.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
yes.
DO not upgrade radio unless your phone is unlocked.
All custom ROMs here on XDA do not contain radio's so you should be fine just flashing a new ROM after you have rooted. Changing the radio is a optional step if you are unlocked or not on Orange.

[Q] Can I put a new ROM if its not rooted ?

Just bought a new vodafone wildfire and had it sim unlocked
Its on 2.2.1 and hboot is 1.001
So I get the joke, I can't root it
But is there still a way of putting a generic ROM on it ?
If the "old days" you could do it with a gold card.
Does this still work on "2.2.1" ?
many thanks in advance
No, it doesn't. Sorry.
You could try downgrading there is a thread but the issus is there is a possibility of bricking the device so of course be carefully

the older days have gone.
none of the processes which worked for eclair wildfire (with older hboot) now work for froyo wildfire.
And till now, on froyo wildfire with hboot 1.01, u cant even get a simple root just for using ROOT ONLY APPS.
what all u can do is WAIT DUDEEEE...................

Check it. Use the gingerbreak method. It works.
http://driphter.com/index.php?topic=3867.0
I had accidentally tried 2.37 via the pd98img and everything was locked up, so I wanted to get back to 2.36 but the RUU no longer would work. Im suprised my steps & toolkit still worked considering people are saying that the last version of gingerbreak didnt work. Well it still did for me (and a few other users) and NO goldcard was needed.
It doesn't work for me
At step 1. Download and Run this RUU to downgrade your device (plug in, run it, and let it do its magic): I got a failure (-> picture).
In Englisch: failure 140: Bootloader-Version-Failure
The ROM Update Utility Programm can't update the Android-Phone.
You need the right one and try again.
But which one is right? I tried more than ten ...
Again: I have (telekom)-branded Gingerbrad 2.37.111.6. No root an S-ON
help me please
thanks
greez Fabi
which RUU are you using are you using?
try skipping the RUU part of it, and just start at step 2 with the gingerbreak method.
Are you saying that Gingerbreak method in your post works on an S-ON 2.37 phones?
I wasn't able to make gingerbreak work either. My phone also lagged and FC with most widgets, won't connect to the mobile and wireless network. I thought I broke something by having radio s-off. But fortunately after Factory reset and wipe cache. everything went smoothly. Trouble is I have to setup my DHD again. ontly thing I was able to successfully restore was the contacts. using the built-in export tool.

I tried the SAME .exe from another page...
So start at step 2 with gingerbreak: (in Charge mode?!)
At step 4 my phone doesn't install Gingerbreak from PC - so I copied the apk to my device, run it but nothing happens. It sags only: Rooting...; Running exploit...; This may take a few minutes! Device will reboot on success.
Now I'm waiting more than a half an hour! What's wrong?
FAbi
So why not upgrade? I mean does anyone know how to create FOTA updates? Coz maybe we can trick the phone to update to 1.32 but maybe change the numbers to 2.38 or something like that.

Downgrading 2.50.405.2 to 1.32 ?

Hi,
I just got my dhd back from repair and they updated it to 2.50.405.2 -.-
Is this downgradable yet to root ? I ****in hate standard roms
Please help..
Thanks
i think versions above 2.37 can't be downgraded yet.
i am waiting for downgrade of 2.42 as well. just wait
I to have 2.50.405.2 after repair.
I found rooted this version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155634&highlight=2.50.405.2
But dont know will it help to change ROM.
If some one will find some solution please share it.
gingerbreak 1.2 not working with 2.50
Well, u need clockworkmod to flash it which u need rom manager for. And for rom manager u need root
I think we'll have to wait.. But the 2.37+ downgrade has been in development for about 2 months now.. Taking way to long
Probably waiting to see which bootloaders are unlocked, as promised.
Due out in September.

If u are S-OFF then u can downgrade to 2.36 by using the RUU version then root ur device,
edit:- i´ve done it more than 3times after updating from 2.36 to 2.50 "OTA" (believe me u can)
U can get the 2.36 ruu here:-

Trivial Question
I have a trivial question, I am very interested in rooting using this method, however I have recently encountered an issue with my stock rom ever since I did the OTA update to 2.43.611.1 The issue is HTC Sence has stopped unexpectedly window pops up quite often & in talking to telus my provider & HTC them selves, they both say the phone needs to be repaired,
My question since I encountered the problem immediatly upon doing the OTA update should I get it repaired first or just try rooting to see if that fixes it.
Also if possible can I be pointed in the direction of how to return to stock Telus if I end up rooting & the probelm still persists?
My thanks to thoes who have diligently be working & involved in helping others & myself reach root status on higher Build numbers.
Great Work!

The reason you're getting the error after the ota update is the same reason why people get issues after installing custom roms and not wiping their device... the old cache and user data conflicts with the update.
Downgrading and then flashing a custom rom along with flashing an updated radio will remedy the problem. I dont believe you'll want to use the initial radio release, I highly recommend flashing the radio from the 2.52 korean release to your Telus DHD, along with the ril's from that release and replacing the ones in the rom you will flash via cwm recovery. ENG S-OFF is required to flash a new radio or recovery img.
Once you downgrade, you can always return to the stock 2.43.661.1 rom. There is a thread in the Desire HD/Inspire 4G Forum on Driphter.com where I've placed the RUU's of common builds (especially for Telus and AT&T). If returning the device for warranty purposes, you must Radio S-On prior to Installing the stock rom via the RUU. The RUU Itself will set ENG to SHIP, and unroot.
Excellent, Greatly appreciated.
Might try rooting as soon as tonight. Kind of excited to have a functional device again!
I am glad that it worked, i thought OH **** the other day, when i found out that i shouldn't have updated to 2.50, if i was about to root..

Dont think its possible Teppic74's downgrader wouldn't work on the ARA build, so doubt it will work like this.

You should had to ask this in your mind before flashing an RUU that contain an hboot update!
Go to www.shipped-roms.com and find the froyo RUU and flash it, it should downgrade your hboot and you should be able to root again. If you have a branded desire you’re going to need goldcard.

I agree as well, but in the meantime there possibly are a few thousand Desire users who want this problem solved. Another possibility is that people who waited for the GB-update want to root after this disappointing update. They also might be potential donators (including me), so please get root for the official GB-update up and running!
Thanks in advance!
