[Q] ROM Manager & Clockworkmod Recovery for the HTC Marvel - HTC Wildfire S

Hello,
I have recently rooted my HTC Wildfire S (Marvel) and am now looking to flash custom roms (there aren't many yet for our device, I know).
From what I gather, ROM Manager is a good tool to use for that, however I'm wondering if anyone has yet managed to install clockworkmod recovery on the Wildfire S? If so, do I have to compile it from source, or has someone already released a version for the Wildfire S?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115015
This is the link about flashing a recovery.

So will using that recoverymod instead of clockworkmod still let me use ROM Manager?
I'd rather not rely purely on instructions that have been translated by google translate; they hardly make sense...

Rom manager isnt really needed at all. I flash all my custom roms through clockworkmod.

And this recovery on xda.cn *is* clockworkmod then? It seems to offer the same menu, anyway.
I'll just go ahead and try, the most that can happen is I brick the phone

[Q] root desire pvt4 40000

I've found howto about rooting Desire on wiki cyanogenmod (Desire GSM)
Problem is that mine is PVT4 and 40000. How can I do this? Is this guide (latest version of unrevoked) working OK, or are there any problems described here in this forum.
I'm interested in this part of guide:
" NOTE: the ClockworkMod version 2.5.0.7 installed by Unrevoked3 is widely reported not to work with new "PVT4" batches of the Desire. To find out version of the device:
1. Shutdown the HTC Desire (GSM).
2. Power it on by pressing at the same time the back button and the power button.
3. A screen will appear and the first line will reveal the phone version.
4. Choose "reboot" option to reboot the phone to its normal mode.
Some newer versions of the ClockworkMod Recovery. Amon_Ra's Recovery is also known to work.
"
If this guide will NOT work with PVT4 please provide link to guide that will or has worked with your phone, I would like to install newest cyanogenmod on my Desire, but don't have time to play with errors, if there are any.
Thank you

Download AmonRA Recovery 2.0.1 (the .img file) and when rooting select it in Unrevoked (select custom recovery)
http://www.android-hilfe.de/735093-post1.html
I'm trying to install Cyanogenmod 7 on Desire and according to that howto (I can;t post links because I don't have minimum 8 posts, but you can find it on cyanogenmod wiki) I need to get through 4 points to install it:
1. Rooting phone - and this is where that howto tells me to use unrevoked, so according to your last post I should use amon-ra
2. Installing ClockworkMod Recovery - will this also be installed by amon-ra?
3. Flashing Radio - this is the thing that I need to do manually probably (which version are you using, I'm wondering which version should I choose?)
4. Flashing CyanogenMod (I've downloaded already that latest version and just waiting for the root part to be finished)
Do I need S-OFF to update phone to latest cyanogenmod?
1. Desire Android developement - under Everything desire
2. You don't install ClockworkMod, You have to install AmonRa 2.0.1 or latest ClockworkMod is reported to be fine (3.0.0.5 or higher). I'd still recommend AmonRa 2.0.1 (link provided previous thread)
3. Using latest version (see signature). Install it from Recovery (before ROM).
You need to be S-OFF in case you want to flash the CM7 Partition Table (get more space).

no.
1. Root your phone with unrevoked and BEFORE you hit the button you go to file->select custom recovery image (or similar, I dont remember exactly) and choose the amon-ra.img. So it flashes Amon-RA-Recovery instead of clockworkmod. Also untick disable security on phone (again, I dont remember exactly but when you see it, you'll know what I mean).
2. --
3. Depends, what radio is installed at the moment. When you are already using Froyo, you dont need to flash radio because it is already version 5.xx . You can flash a new radio any time, you dont need to do that prior flashing roms, they are sort of independent.
4. Flash Rom via recovery.
For the above you dont need to be S-off. You'd need it, if you want to flash another hboot. But before you do that, do some proper reading in the forum and look at the (video-)tutorials in development section and dont try it before you are completely sure what you are doing.
Yes I know that I wan't to read as much as possible before rooting, but I've got question about that installation of Cyanogenmod, is there any tutorial that you have used for installation of it? I'm thinking about extending partitions and other things?
You flash it like any other rom and you can use any tutorial for that. Basically you do what I wrote in the post above.
CM doesnt support A2sd out of the box, so if you want to use it, you have to use either simple2ext or flash the legacy a2sd-skript (LINK).
What do you meant "extending partitions"?
As I said, there are plenty of tuts for that. Please use search and have a look at the stickies in development-section and the first post of CM7-Thread in development-thread.

[Q] How to unroot and get stock Desire ROM?

Hi all,
I've got htc desire (bravo, GSM), but it comes with Cyanogenmod 7, alpharecovery and custom HBOOT (alpha or some like this). I would like to unroot my phone and have stock Htc Desire with stock ROM. I have been searching for any solutions on XDA forums for ages. I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6710092&postcount=4.
But I can't understand what i should do to get stock Desire.
Can somebody please help me? Thanks.
Sorry for my english.
Hello. First of all why do you want to unroot? The big part of peoples try to ROOT but are to afraid... You can flash a custom ROM that has only the stock ROM plus a few additions that will make your life easier. (ex.: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916417).
Anyway if you want to UNROOT be sure to read the ALL of the bellow threads FROM THE BEGINNING TILL END and understand everything it is written there and after this proceed:

Read the tuts posted above, but also remember to change the HBOOT back to stock, running a RRU will not work on the CM7 HBOOT. Alpharev has the stock HBOOT on there web site, the tuts above will tell you.how to change it

Ok, i don't need to completly remove root. But I preferably want a stock ROM. And I prefer to update my recovery from this stupid cwm-alpharev(v2.5.1.8), in official last CM7 stable mod, there is application "ROM Manager" and there's an option Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (bla bla u must have CWM to use this app etc). Can I do it? Can I reflash old recovery (alpha rev.)? Newest is 3.X.X.X
PS:
HBOOT 0.93
I want stock ROM because i hate this ext partitioning and all about installing parts of ROM into external SD card. And than I had 1GB ext which I cannot use for apps, and 40mb of internal storage. I HATE IT.

Well on stock Rom, you get around 75 Mb for installing apps, which would be over with around 20 apps installed. If you're cool with that, install Teppic's stock rooted rom. You dont need to unroot just for using stock rom.

[Q] Help with best Rom for my gingerbread desire with lastest gingerbread ruu

Hi guys
I have a desire bravo that i updated to the new gingerbread ruu when it came out.
Sorry but i have a few questions. Im on holiday at the moment and im using my desire wifi hotspot to use the internet at the moment so i really dont want to mess it up.
1) I used the clockwork mod to S-off and install a custom recovery this morning.
I know that the S-Off worked and i manged to install the custom recovery as the superuser app has shown up in my menu and the hboot menu shows S-Off.
First thing i did was to do a back up that i have saved to my computer..
I then moved on to Root the rom and it showed as being complete
When i installed root check from the market i get some problems. The first is : Application superuser has stopped unexpectedly. I have to force close the app to continue. Root check then tells me that "Root Access is not properly configured or was not granted"
Anyone have any ideas about what i did wrong ???
2) if i cant root the rom should i just install a new custom rom. Does anyone know what is the best GB rom with a new sense (not bothered about what one) i should install. Not worried about App to sd yet as i thought if i start small with a stable rom then i can always change to a rom with app to sd built in at a later time once i get used to changing roms
Thanks for your help as i said i really dont want to brick the phone as i will lost internet access and will be stuck till i get home.
Thanks Guys
BTW big thanks to the clockwork guys for all there hard work
When your phone is s-off, you don't have to root it (or rather the os). So if the s-off process finishes (you cannot s-off with a recovery, so I assume you did it with revolutionary), just flash a rom with root access and you're done.
There is no "best rom". It depends on personal preferences. Just try.
yes i used the revolutionary way to s-off and install the recovery files and i have to say it works very very well very easy to understand
Thanks for the info about rooting the rom. I think i understand now
so can i install any rom now as i updated to the offical gingerbread ruu when it came out ?
If so can you recommend a good gingerbread rom with a newish sense on ?

After you run the revolutionary process successful, flash a custom recovery with fastboot (how to use fastboot -> see my sig). I recommend 4ext or rmd. Now boot into recovery, make a full wipe and flash any rom you want (save important first). Just follow the given instructions in the corresponding thread.
For the sense rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
thanks guys. I think im going to give the AceSMod007-Lite (Sense2.1+3.0 GB ) a go as a lot of people recommend it. 1 quick question.
Can i install this rom even though i installed the offical RUU Gingerbread update and s-off'ed using revolutionary??
Thanks Guys
sorry one more question.
I did a backup of my rom via recovery. If i dont like the new Rom can i just restore to my standard rom via retore in recovery mode?
Yes, you can. Just wipe everything and restore. If you cannot to this, a backup would be senseless, don't you think?
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
Thank you soooooooo much. I just flashed the rom and eveything is working perfect
my phone now shows that i have :
885 MB on Ext Partition
34.27 MB on /data
3.97 MB on /System
Does that sound right?
Looks fine.

[Q] Please confirm this procedure

Hi,
Finally my wife has given me the green light to customize her phone, Wildfire S (GSM). I have done custom roms and recovery stuff on my EVO 3D, but this device seems a bit different.
I'd like to confirm the steps to succesfully accomplish this.
1) Unlock bootloader with Simons HTC utility v4. I don't want to use HTCdev for obvious warranty reasons.
2) Root the device using HTC Supertool (by Frigid) using the zergRush method.
3) Install custom recovery. I prefer 4ext, but don't know if it is available for WFS.
4) Install custom ROM. Any suggestions there, I'm leaning towards WildChild for now.
Some final questions:
Is rooting really neccessary to install a custom recovery?
If 4ext isn't available for WFS, which touch recovery do you recommend?
Thanks for reading and for your replies!!

There are just 2 recoveries for our phone: cwm and twrp. Both work great.
I dont think so that you need root to install a custom recovery.
For Best ROM: ICS: CM9 by modpunk. Wildchild is great too.

I'll go and look for an installer for twrp.
Since my wife needs to use the phone, I'll stay away from CM. She 'depends' on Sense :victory:

Lets go step by step of your procedure
1)Unlocking the bootloader with Simons HTC utility is a smart choice
2)I'd prefer to root the phone via Doomlord's easy rooting toolkit(Search it on Xda)....it's much easier
3)You have a few options right now,
4ext isnt available for the WFS so if you want a touch recovery you can try TWRP
Or you can use the official CWM 5.0.2.8(Best way to flash this is via Rom manager)
4)A few options here
(i)If you want to keep Sense,go for Wildchild Sense
(ii)If you want very minimal sense, use the original Wildchild Rom
(iii)If your wife is ok with AOSP,flash CM7.........but i would to wait a bit if 'cause our CM7 is going official soon
I wouldnt recommend ICS because it still has it's share of bugs(which are universal to all ARMv6 devices) and JB is REALLY A WIP
And i think you will need to root to install custom recovery........because flashing would need root permissions(I think so :silly
I did a quick search and it seems download links to Doomlord's Root kit are down.
I also found this recovery flasher. To me it seems root is not needed for this flasher. Any pre-requisites are unknown to me at this moment, but an unlocked bootloader seems enough as far as I can think of.
4ext isnt available for the WFS

The 4ext in the post is referring to the custom recovery and not the filesystem.
Simons Utility failed to work for me. I simply went the htcdev way.
Phone is running Hensemod for now.
Thanks for the suggestions and help!

Root mobile with S-Off?

Hello All,
I am trying to root my friend's htc desire with uninvoked 3.32 but stuck on "running root" step.I have followed the exact instruction in this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044&highlight=running) and it does all the steps mentoined but will stuck in last step i think after rebooting it says "running root" and my device hangs, nothing happends.I have to pull battery to boot again.
My friend bought it second hand and interestingly in hboot it says S-Off but there is no root.I have tried different unrevoked version 3.14,3.21 but they give other errors than "running root" on last reboot while it was about to run root script. It gets past through 1st reboot with pushing recovery, hboot, rebooting etc but won't root at last moment.
So how can i root this device? Do i need to root if hboot says S-Off to install recovery and custom roms? I am not so noob as i have xperia arc rooted and flashed custom roms and have knowledge of CWM recoveries, flashtool, fastboot etc.But i am new to HTC devices.so please help me to root this device.
Hehe not so noob, but still post question in Q&A? (Don't worry i've requested it to be moved )
Anyway, since the phone is already s-off, is there a recovery already installed? Boot into hboot (vol down + power), wait, then volume down to recovery, and press power to select.
If it doesn't have a recovery installed, install 4EXT from here
If you need to root the existing ROM, to say backup certain things, then you need to flash a superuser.zip
However, if you want to just install a custom ROM, just full wipe and flash a ROM like you would before, you don't need to root it first, as the custom ROM will wipe everything, and will already be pre-rooted

Hehe, ya really sorry for wrong section post. I just realized it now.
I think i saw a recovery option in hboot while doing root process. Not sure but i will check it tomorrow when i meet my friend. I installed supersu from market to check if it's rooted but while opening, it gave a binary su error message which means it's not rooted.
So if a device has S-Off mentioned in hboot then it's already S-offed? No need for S-Off process? I can flash custom ROMs from recovery?
Thankx for the reply. It cleared a lot of doubt for htc deivice.

Yes, once you have s off you dont have to s off again. Like eddie said, you can use your custom recovery (if you have one) to either flash a superuser zip to root the stock ROM or flash a custom ROM that will come prerooted.

Thankx a lot guys. There was a stock recovery but i installed 4ext and supersu as youguys said. Now it's rooted with custom recovery.I can move forward with other stuffs now.
Thankx a lot for getting started with this htc device flashing
Hello guys,
Need some help needed again. After installing recovery and rooting i was trying to flash custom roms.Currently my device have stock froyo 2.2.2 with kernel 2.6.32.15,baseband 32.49.00. I tried to get ext partition but seems it needs init.d support which is not in stock rom. AFter some search i found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710980 but seems there is no post_boot.sh in this rom and didn't understand what it's trying to say.
So my last option was to install custom rom but stuck on one doubt. If i want to install froyo rom like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833310 or gingerbread rom like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453287, do i need to flash kernel? There is not description on first post to flash recommended kernel for ROM page i visited. For my xperia arc ROMs, ROM developer explains on what kernel to user before install. So this is a bit confusing on htc device.
Can i intall different froyo,GB,ICD,JB ROMs without needing to flash kernel. Is this 2.6.32 kernel be used for all ROMs in this forum? Can you recommend a custom rom for my kernel for testing?
Easiest way is to install a custom ROM straight away, don't bother in any addition of init.d etc.
All ROMs here come with a compatible kernel, no matter what android version
You can flash different kernels after you flash the ROM, but you have to check compatibility.
In short: personally wouldn't bother with any Froyo ROM. The GB ones are more stable generally, still a good amount of use and activity, so if this is what if important I'd recommend this. Wouldn't bother with ICS, as development moved on to JB. With JB your mileage may vary considerably, e.g. with stability / camera etc.
Try a few, see what you like, be happy there's still plenty of choice for such an old phone!

Thankx for quick reply. So if i install this GB ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453287,do i have to flash it's kernel or stock one works?Do all roms inculde kernel to flash or do i have to search compatible one for it?
Also flashing new kernel delete hboot and recovery or it won't affect?kernel is standalone from hboot and recovery? I am asking this since in xperia phone recovery is incuded in kernel.

The ROM comes with a kernel, so you don't have to flash one separately.
Flashing kernels and ROMs won't touch your recovery or hboot.

Like I said, kernels come packaged within a ROM. You can flash a different compatible one if you want to after you flash the ROM, but it's not necessary. Remember compatibility is key here, so for instance you can't flash a sense kernel on a non-sense ROM.
Flashing a kernel doesn't touch hboot or recovery, it just replaces the boot.img inside /system.
With that ROM, it's best to change hboot before you flash the ROM for optimal internal memory, should be compatible with cm7r2 hboot from alpharev.nl, recommend to learn to flash it using fastboot.

Flashing kernels wont brick youre phone. I accidentally flashed a few sgs3 kernels when i was a little n00b, but this wont cause any permanent damage. The phone obviously wont boot, but after a full wipe and reinstall of a compatible kernel all should be fine. There is a chance however that flashing hboots could brick the phone, but its pretty low. You would have to flash a corrupted hboot, or disrupt the flashing.
I usually just ignore that 4ext warning. It pops up from time to time, but it should stop happening once youre done installing a new hboot/wiping/flashing a rom. You can flash an hboot using the PB99IMG method as well (its easier than fastboot). Download the PB99IMG_cm7r2.zip from alpharev.nl and flash it using this very straight forward guide. And no, you dont just use cm7r2 hboot just because a rom is cm. cm7r2 will only work if the system size of the rom is less than 145mb. For mildwilds cm-8.0 JG it will work fine. Dont use that tool for flashing the hboot...use the guide i linked.

Thankx a lot for all the help.I have successfully installed on of ruu stock gingerbread ROM .I flasehd kernel and rom zip both from 4ext recovery. One last question. While installing ROM zip at last it displayed some message about boot image. Does Rom zip flash it's kernel while installing ROM and we don't need to flash kernel zip separately?

Each ROM has a kernel included. You don't have to flash a kernel separately.
