Change from ext4 back to ext3??? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, as title says, basically am running an ext4 Rom but was wondering if I was to change Rom that was ext3 , how do I do that? Is it just a case of doing a full wipe?? Or do I need to change it back somehow?
Sorry if its stupid question , I'm not really up to scratch and am fairly new to romming , first time I've used ext4.
Thanks

[Q] EXT4 Vs RFS

Whats the difference and what are the benefits of RFS and EXT4? Sorry if it's been posted already. I'm on my phone and it didnt pull up anything.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Ext4 is supposed to write back quicker and avoid cache write-back lag. Also, the no-journal mod makes it write to disk less. This, in theory, should make the phone snappier. Some people say it ext4 works wonders. Others have had strange lag problems. Personally, I didn't notice much difference and am sticking to ext4 for now. It is arguably a better file system than rfs, which is just fat32 with some journaling that samsung added to it.
thanks... Another question... How can I get my device on ext4? Is it flashable through clockwork?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Run the one click root with cwm3. Once you boot into cwm3 then it converts it for you.
Ok this may sound dumb.. but ok I have done the 1 click root with cw3. So I'm assuming I should be running ext4.. right? But thr rom I'm runing is rfs only (epic experience). So how is this possible? Or am I over thinking this lol

Did you flash epic experience with cwm3? Or was that something you installed before cwm3?

[Q] ROM without A2SD+/A2SD

Hi Everyone, i've just root my desire and would like to flash a new ROM for fun.
Most of ROM i found are having A2SD/A2SD+/A2EXT and i know it means that it allow installing apps to SD-ext.
But actually i don't want to create ext on my sd card. in other word, i would like to install all the stuff on internal rom only(include other apps)
Can anyone help to find a suitable Sense3.0 ROM that have around 100MB free rom after flashing & without A2SD+/A2SD.
Thanks.
You have got everything wrong, you don't need an ext partition for apps2sd roms.
And to answer your other question, there is no sense 3 rom that doesn't need an ext partition, let alone one with free memory!
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
oh.....that means i have to create ext partition on my SD if i want a sense 3 rom.......
btw, can class 2/class 4 SD card used for ext partition?
4 is fine. 2 may struggle. Depends what's on ext. Apks are pretty much archives. Apps run from dalvik-cache so that should be fine

you said "Depends what's on ext", does it mean that i can decide what should be installed in ext
No. Just means I'm not familiar with these Roms so not sure what's on there usually system app and frameworks.
Try it. If it works on 2, fine. If not, get class 4

sorry that i have another question,
my desire doesn't have s-off, how can i choose a correct rom for it?
The most important of S-OFF is the changing Hboots. But you don't need another Hboot for any rom here. Or rather in general: You don't need S-OFF for any rom (as far as I know). So just choose the rom you want.

but there are so many versions in each particular ROM and i don't know which to choose
e.g. IncertCoin sense 2.1+3 --> CM7 HBoot / stock HBoot
Cool3D Sensation --> with different combination of partition
so, within each ROM, which version is suitable for me?
thanks
Stock hboot if you haven't changed it.

Hello friends
what the difference between Data++ and A2SD? Wich is better?
Data++ gives you a considerable amount more space for apps etc

They couldn't me more different.
Data++ is a,hboot that changes the size of the internal partitions.

[Q] Bootloop with Alex-V 1.8 (387mb hboot)

I have problems with the Alex-V 1.8 Hybrid-Sense Rom:
I prefer the 387mb hboot-version, but where I can get the hboot-image?
Which partitions should I take for the data2ext? Im the original post is fat+ext4+ext4+swap, but when I'm installing the rom, it shows me that I need fat+ext4+ext3

copied that from alex's thread i did not realise it is not redirecting just straight download sorry
Thank you, but how i must partitionize my sd-card?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
for partitioning use Gparted. alternatively use 4ext recovery.
I'm using gparted , i mean do i need fat+ext4+ext4+swap or fat+ext4+ext3 or somthing other
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You need FAT32 (rest) + EXT4 (size 1 - 2 GB; I recommend 1,5 GB). Did not look it up, but this partition worked for every ROM I used since now (even a DATA2EXT one).
I always use 4ext recovery. gives the option of ext 3/4 and 1st, 2nd and swap partitions
Thanks for your answers!!! The problem was, that /system was too small, so i deleted a few ringtones, now it is working !!!!!

rom with more space

hi everyone, a friend of mine has a desire (stock rom) and always the problem that the internal capacity is full. now we are looming for a stable rom which basicly has sd card limit for apps and is not restricted to the intetnal one.
ive read quite a lot here and lokked at some roms and have some favorites, but i would like to get some input from actual desire users what rom they use and how the situation is with the app storage space.
so what rom do you use?
and hows the app storage situation with the rom?

you're going to get confusing answers from this question in my opinion, though you could try here. if you want stability at the moment stick with GB roms.
best bet would be to browse through a few in the development section, see what your friend wants, rather than what other people tell you is the BEST ROM EVER

virtually all of them will have raised the limit on app storage using various scripts, which is one of the main reasons of custom roms on desire in the first place
each rom will have their own requirements, but generally need an sd-ext partition (use 4ext recovery or gparted) and/or a hboot partition table.
i've always found this guide useful in understanding root/memory stuff.

Supernova,by Droidzone, just do a 2gig ext4 partition and you will have 2gig of internal memory.
This Rom is base on stock 2.3 and is tweak for the better. Super smooth and your low memory days are over. Don' t take my word try it yourself
my HTC Desire runs actually BCM cyanogenmod9 with a data++ hboot
Anyway, you could get free space without changing rom and avoid using sd card ext (which might introduce some lags), by flashing the bravo Sense hboot (saving 70MB and keeping HTC Desire's stock rom).
That's my point, but it depends on your friend's rom preferences
thanks all for the feedback, actually i looked yesterday at some roms and supernova was one of the roms i considered since its aosp based, the other would be mildwild which is cm7 based, i guess i will just add my friend what suits her better and then go with that.
any bugs or other issues i should be aware with theae roms?
oh and i think the device has 5.11....radio i think. will that cause problems?

I just converted to mildwild 4.1.9 and can vouch for it being very impressive. I have setcpu app on it and now have 75% battery at the end of the day. I have a 16GB SD card and loads of storage so far, but I must say I am more disciplined with what I install now, as I used to gum it up with anything and everything! Mine is a desire GSM btw.

Oxygen rom is worth a look. AOSP rom that is closest to stock Gingerbread that you'll gonna get for desire. Just use the custom hboot for it found in http://alpharev.nl. (s-off required) and EXT partition on the sd card and it should give you one of the most stable rom with decent space for your apps.
check http://oxygen.im to get the rom.
iv been using mildwild oxygen the past week and got no complaints, i used runnymede aio as my "stock" rom and always went back to it lol but i honestly cant see myself going back this time
Sent from my HTC Desire
thnaks a lot for the feedback,
we tried mildwild oxygene but after one day and 5 self reboots its clear this is not stable at all.
now i have an other question, i flashed cm 7.2 with full wipe but the device always booted/rebooted into recovery... what can be the cause of that? mithg we have some partitioning problem here?
or something else thats wrong?
i partitioned the sd card with the cwm (1gb ext, 32mb swap) that gets installed with rom manager (5.0.2 or so i think).
if this is the problem, would be awesome to get a link to what we need to make cm 7.2 work. thanks.
lol mildwild oxygen not stable? probably 1 of the top 3 most stable roms iv used. using it now, not 1 single problem.

well thats nice for you, but my friend got lots of reboots so i dont consider this stable at all and we need to try somethig else.
i guess its like oc/uc nor everything works for every device.

maybe you could mention something better instead of just calling cwm crap?
well maybe if u wasnt so cheeky i would of. cwm is known to make bad partitions so maybe try 4ext recovery or gparted to partition. i use 1gb ext4 and rest fat32 (no swap) with mildwild oxygen and iv had no problems so maybe try 4ext recovery
Sent from my HTC Desire
thanks for the information, i will check the partitions today with gparted and probably reformat. i created a 32m swap partition and i dont know if cwm created a ext3 or ext4 partition so that might be the problem...
i did not intend to be "cheeky" (and not sure if i understand it correctly, sometimes im getting a bit upset when people post something like: " it works for me." and do not think about adding some info what could be different:O
if ur gona use mildwild oxygen i dont think u will need a swap size when u partition sdcard, just do a 1gb ext4 or 1.5gb max and the rest fat32

I am using MW based on Oxygen v4 with a SD-EXT partition of 1GB and set-up with APPS+DATA to SD-EXT. Don't think I am close to running out of space. I have 104 apps installed including the big ones like Google+/Skype/etc.
Check out this thread with practically links to every ROM available for desire. I usually scour this link to check for updates.

EXT 4 Going Back to EXT3

Hey guys I was flashing a ROM this morning and the ROM used AROMA Installer and the Dev recommended a full wipe so I did so.
And it formatted Cache and stuff to EXT 4 is there a way to go back to EXT 3 again?
Thanks in Advance!

A quick Google search will tell you that 4ext lets you convert back and forth between ext3 and ext4 easily. Also, it is the best recovery available for Android, period, and not using it is doing yourself a disservice. Seriously. 4ext touch is incredible and every vision owner should be using it.
http://4ext.net
May I ask why you would ever go back to ext3? No ICS rom can run even remotely properly on ext3 and all the good GB roms should support and run much better on ext4.

4ext Recovery allows for switching between ext3 and ext4, it's also a better recovery than CWM. Why do you want to switch back to ext3?

Ahh okay, but seriously ext4 offers a very noticeable performance increase, even with GB. Nobody should ever try to use ICS or JB without ext4 formatted partitions.

Gingerbread or older roms (ie: froyo etc that doesn't even support ext4) might, but for ICS onward ext4 is going to be your best filesystem for performance reasons.
And another vote here for 4EXT Touch Recovery regardless of which file system you go with.
Also with 4EXT Touch recovery, if you make a backup for a rom that was in ext3, it'll be restored as ext3, same with any backups made while it was in ext4, you can also convert said backup from one to the other under Tools prior to restoring it.

or you can convert the partition after flashing. Be careful since there's one option to convert and one to format. Nandroid it 1st.

Restoring a nandroid that is in ext4 will result in a ROM that is in ext4, it overwrites completely what was once there. Since the ROM you've flashed is in ext4, might as well leave it that way ... not only did the developer want it that way, but it's a much better file system.

you can after true, it's all up to you if you prefer to format then flash from zip, or convert backup, or restore back up and then convert partitions. Converting the backups tends to be much faster because 4EXT style backups are tar files, and all it does is formats the existing partition to the appropriate format before un-taring the backup to it. Where as restoring to ext3 and then converting later will take time. (just make sure to keep a backup of the backup )
I guess the point is you got plenty of choices.
One question. Should only system be ext4 or would it be better if data and cache were ext4 as well?
data/cache/system should all be ext4 for best performance

okay I've decided to stay on EXT 4 since I can't get 4EXT to instal :/
Got one more problem, every time I flash a ROM my battery heats up to 33-36 degrees and the normal temp is 29 degrees this only happened after I migrated to EXT4 any fix for that? besides shutting down my phone lol (well thats what I do )
