[Q] EXT4 & Gingerbread ROMs - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question about EXT4. I've seen a few people saying they've used tools such as FULL_WIPE_1.5_EXT4 to prepare their phones for new ROMs.
However, I thought most (all?) Gingerbread ROMs would format to EXT4 before install? Therefore surely this utility isn't required?
For example, I moved to Coredroid last night and now "mount" tells me that my filesystem is EXT4, despite not doing any prep.

Maybe its because if the ROM has a problem when flashing (which does happen) you can always use the stand alone formater to wipe and try again. But maybe a better informed person than myself can give a better reason/description.

Thanks liquido2.
Would be nice if somebody could give a definitive answer.

need a desire vets advice

hello all. i just recenlt bricked my galaxy s telus fascinate and got a desire replacement. i managed to get the root working without a issue (was superscared because of previous brick). now im looking for a rom. a good rom. coming from touch wiz, sense is mint. i love it.
so i want something that like stock sense with sense widgets without all the bloat and hopefully a proper app2sd (the stock app2sd is only moving like 1/3 of the data to sd and 2/3 is stayin in internal storage) . i heard desire hd roms r good but i dont really see the upside cause i dont know much about the phone yet just the OS. im runnin froyo 2.2 with hboot 93.0001.
any info would b mint. thx in advance
ps. only 1 day in, and the desire is running laps around the fascinate in every aspect except afew hardware issues like
-no internal sd card
-psx4droid is alot slower but i do own a hacked psp so no biggy
-and the app2sd sucks considering i went from 2 gigs internal storage to 133 mbs
but interface rocks. awaiting some opinions
You may want to take a gander at this thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/231930-desire-index-everything-desire-here.html
It has links to all the usual suspects when it comes to the different ROMs available, and once you get familiar with the ones that are out there you can do more detailed searches to see which one you may like the most. After that just download and get to flashing. As long as you nandroid backup before flashing anything you can always go back.

im looking for something exact replica of sense with a proper data2sd, bloatware removed. i heard desire hd roms r nicer but i really cant tell from videos on youtube. also i find sense alil bit slow in the home screen scrolling. is there any sense desire hd roms that can fix these issues?
LeeDroid 2.3d - superfast sense based 2.2 rom, with the stuff you need.
Baadnwz 1.8c- i'm using it now, a great HD port, but not as fast as the LD.

what about kernels? i had a overclocked voodoo kernel on my sgs and it ran games and emulators amazingly. ff9 on ps4drioid was running like 95% speed. any speed kernels or voodoo kernels available? and allso i hear the best way to manage storage is data and app2sd +. how do i go about installing that? b4 or after i flash the rom?
1. The Desire has an Adreno GPU, not a PowerVR SGX - so the graphics performance will be MUCH more slower, than the GS'. Also I use this kernel, gives me the best performance.
2. Most custom ROMs have that feature preinstalled (so installs automatically, when flashing the ROM), just make sure you have partitioned your SD Card (fat32+ext 2/3/4).

how do i go about partitioning the sd card? lm fat with a fresshreformat from my pc. now im quite sure ext/4 is the safest and most stable partition to use and 2 being the worst. on sgs, voodoo did the ext/4 for me and didnt have to do the work. so im confused on this part since ive seen nothing with a voodoo tag on it since i joined. and voodoo had to be deactivated everytime u flashed new software. does that still apply here>?
Use Gparted or easus partition for that.
Create a FAT32 partition first and then an ext4 partition (both primary).
You have to look for a2sd+ here in the ROMs description to make it work (LeeDroid definiately works). Make sure you have partitioned the SD card then just flash the ROM (of course nandroid backup first & full wipe) and it will go, you have to do nothing. It is an auto-script.

A very good tutorial how to use Gparted, if you have no idea.
+Make sure you create a boot CD/USB correctly
How did you root your desire? With Unrevoked? What custom recovery do you have CWM or Amon RA?
How to make a nandroid backup.
Also search youtube and this forum on HOW to use a custom recovery.
k so i used some windows partition creator and partitioned fat32 with a 1.5 gb ext3 partition. flashed rcsmixhd. looks mint. running good so far. got the telus network working. only thing i really need 2 know is how does the app2sd+ work? does it automatically install it too sd? or do i haveta use a app? or can i go thru the settings applicqations manage move to sd card? this is all i have left todo so plz advice is a must

i know this question has been asked many a tyms ,....but still i want to start using 1 stable rom for a long tym.

...it wl be greatly appreciated......
.. thanks in advance..
insertcoin 2.0.1 hd rom, very stable, been running it since it was released without a single problem.
easy to setup your sdcard for it.
use mini tool partition wizard
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
large fat32 partition using all your space bar 1.4gb
1gb primary ext3 partition
300mb primary ext3 partition
100mb linux swap partition
Then flash your rom
simples
thanks mate..!!!
Tried to reply to your pm but its not working for some reason..
but heres what i was trying to send..
if you have set it up as stated and it has .94gb of internal memory then its already working fine..
The scripts are already within the rom and it sets up the data2ext on the first boot.
if you want more internal memory than that you need to make a bigger 1st ext partition than 1gb to start with, but its not recommended, and 1gb should be more than enough for app storage, i have like 300 apps and still 300mb free space.
All apps installed are sutomatically installed on the ext partition from first boot
I would recommend Redux as your ROM.
It is fast, stable and I have not had a single issue with it.
All of the info you need on App2SD+ is available through this webiste, but you are going to have to read a fair amount of information (some conflicting) to work out what is best for you.
I would watch the video tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Always do a Nandroid backup (boot from recovery, backup) before flashing, especially between different ROMs (I even do it between releases of Redux just to be safe).
Cheers
If you haven't chosen already you should consider going with an RCMixHD rom or perhaps SupeROM HD
There are no best ROM for Desire.
Every ROM has its limitation and good side.
Try them one by one and decide. I know this will take longer but this is the best way.
Info:
I am using InsertCoin 2.0.1 Data2Ext and have been using InsertCoin since it was still called Baadnewz 1.3.
Before that, I have been using LeeDroids, RCmixHD, RCs Z, DeFrost, and one of the MIUI (I don't like MIUI)...InsertCoin is the best for me after trying those ROMs.
Same for me here, InsertCoin is very fast (try Data++), stable and reliable. I've been using it for months now after trying out over a dozen roms.....
But as already stated, there is no such thing as a 'best' rom. Everybody has a different taste, invest some time an find your favorite.
RCMixHD gets my vote
i think RcMixHD is the best Rom.
I use it since 2MOnth and had no Problems until now.

That's the only truth
Try many and give yourself what you like
For me, Oxygen is the best 1
As a newbie I've tried a few out, and just put leedroid 2.4 on and will hopefully be sticking with it.
I was just after more space really (and improved battery would be a bonus). I tried StarBurst as it seemed the best for space and it was great for a couple of days, but then it rebooted randomly and just about everything I tried to run FC'd. As far as I could tell it was something to do with Data2SD not being stable enough and due to my limited skills I had to abandon it.
To sum up, as a newbie I found I was best off sticking with the tried and tested ones that use A2SD as they're more stable. Also tried Teppics which was good until I started playing with things I didn't understand (Kernels) and broke it!
Just my 2p worth as a beginner!
Miui 1.4.1 for the moment the best rom out there
After i rooted i have tried many roms
but after a more then a half year with leedroids rom without any problem i would suggest it.
It has decent speed is very stable and sensebased if you prefer it
Try some roms and see which is the best for you.
If you make a nandroid backup you can switch very fast back

[Q] Many custom ROMS used, Desire increasingly slower.

I have been an avid reader and user of ROMs on XDA for the last year, and only just created an account to thank people for their work.
I have used mainly Sense UI Roms and the odd non-Sense on occasion.
Every ROM i've used, i've wiped cache, Dalvik Cache and factory reset.
Everyone seems to get very fluid and smooth actions on their roms and has nothing bad to say about it, and on Youtube videos its always great, however mine is laggy at best.
In keeping with the rules, here is a list of what i'm running
Desire (SLCD) T-Mobile UK
S-ON
Rom - RunnymedeMod007 v03
Kernal - 2.6.35.14-gingercakes-0.9-avs
Baseband - 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08
CWM Recovery 2.5.0.7
16Gb Class 10 SD Card with 2Gb EXT4 partition and the rest FAT32, done using Gparted.
I was wondering, based on the above info, if this was all compatible.
i'm fairly confident with using new roms and the like however I get pretty lost with all the different versions of things that go hand in hand with roms.
If it wasn't for XDA i doubt i'd have the confidence to even try it, so thanks everyone for the hard work you put in to get ROMS to people like myself.
Regards,
Paul
before you install a new ROM.. do you do a full wipe (i.e. go to mounts & storage, format boot, system, data, cache?) if no, then do so and you should see a great improvement. If you are then I dunno what to tell you.. suppose if you're using 2EXT ROMs then you can use the SD-Booster thing (sorry forgot what it's called lol).. that's my advice
I just noticed there on my phone after you posted this. I will certainly try this out and post back. It may well help others in the same situation.
Paul
Just to check back. That's made a vast improvement. It even looks and feels much better
Thank you for your help

[Q] Why does my desire freeze running custom ROMs?

Hey guys!
This might be some kind of a noob question but I honestly don't know what I am doing wrong.
I tried different custom ROMs on my Desire and they all share one major fault: my device freezes at least once or twice a day. I tried MildWild Oxygen, MildWild CM, and CM7.1.
First I thought it might be the ADW Launcher in CM7.1 because that was the first ROM I tried, but the others have different launchers and the problem prevails. Also I tried to lower the max CPU frequency but that didn't solve the problem.
Maybe it has sth to do with my partitions? Because I only partitioned my SD card but did nothing more like adding scripts or SD alignment.
Any help will be gratly appreciated.
You can try the file I'm posting below after partitioning your sd card. It'll align and convert your ext3 partition to ext4. This might help. Good luck.
PS: I couldn't post the file because of my low message count. You can search and find the file on google easily. The filename is "alignment_cool_2.zip"
The rom and its kernel could be the prob to .. try runny AIO 5.0.3 no freeze at all

From my experience Runnymade roms were the most unstable roms that I've ever used. Since installing Mildwild's oxygen rom I'm trouble free for quite some time...

Runnymede for me was always stable, but I hate the lag. I multitask a lot!
First of all, thanks to you all for participating in this discussion.
I haven't had a single freeze all day and haven't changed a thing.
Is it possible that my problems disappeared all by themselves?
To be honest, MildWild 2.9 was the smoothest of the three from the beginning.
I'll keep you updated.
PS: Suggestions are of course still welcome
another thing just came to me:
could it be that I messed it up with the partitions I made? Because when I did it I felt like experimenting and made a 2GB ext4 instead of 1GB like I had always done in the past.
ok, I was in a bit of euphoria after I hadn't had a single freeze during the day.
Last night I had an unwanted reboot, this morning I couldn't wake my phone when the alarm went off so I had to take out the battery and on my way to work my phone crashed while I was listening to music and I had to reboot twice to get it running properly again...
Try using alignment_cool_2.zip after partitioning. I also don't use swap partition and set that to "0". Since mildwild released a new version of his rom you can repartition and then use alignment tool and install that new version.

I'm just wondering why you recommend using this rather than just using gparted to convert to ext4?
I also think people should be careful using it as I believe it will wipe your ext3 contents and therefore could mess up your phone. It may be possible to use recovery to backup the ext3/4 and the recover it but that is beyond my level of knowledge to be honest.

Gparted doesn't always work too well for me. Also, after formatting and partitioning your sdcard, everything will be wiped out anyway. This file is very easy to use, plus it aligns your partition. You don't have to boot your computer with gparted. If you don't want to lose your stuff on your sdcard, simply copy everything to your computer and move them back after partitioning...

That may well be the issue. I tried to create a 2Gb sd-ext partition (using CWM) and it crashed my phone as soon as it put all the apps into it. . I have seen it reported that it is known bug that it can't handle large ext3 partitions on the SD card, so I reduced it to 512Mb and all is fine.

[Q] cant receive calls ISC 4.0.3. and memory problem

so i made s-off and installed clockwork recovery touch and then i installed ISC 4.0.3.
but problem is when people call me i cant receive calls. when friends complained i tried and i just hangs up by it self. i dont even get notification and person who is calling me just hears hang up sound. not even one ring.
dose anyone has same problem and what should i do?
second problem is with memory.
i made partitions with clockwork recovery and installed it with terminal but when i try to install any app i get insufficient storage error even so in titanuim backup everything is more then free
have any advice what to do?
please. it kinda urgent!
The ics roms are beta as far as I know, so you could be having problems with a specific Rom. Would be good to ask in that thread.
As for memory, are you sure you made a proper ext partition when you installed a Rom and looking at internal storage, not just as storage?

well since my mobile stopped working cos rom crashed (miui) i had to do everything from the beginning. so i wiped everything and made partition with recovery so i dont think i made mistake while partitioning.
as far as looking which storage... well sd card is empty and i dont have any apps installed (only those which come with rom) so trust me... it's all empty. i made screenshots but i cant post outside links yet.
Switch your ROM
ICS ROMs are experimental, if you want your phone to be every day phone better switch to AOSP Built ROM's like CM7, they are more reliable then anyother ROM available.
I too have tried dozen of ROM's the stablest of them are those who don't use EXT partition of SD card and thus they should be your first choice if you want stability,
I would suggest - CyanogenMod 7.1
I see. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you did anything wrong, but the ics roms are beta stage. I have only been able to get the tiny ics Rom to boot and it was too laggy to try to call. The one for all hboot did not work too. As above, cyanogen is a good option for close to stock android. Theres also roms that are skinned to look like ics that work super fast. Hope you solve your problem of not being able to call, this is a phone afterall lol

thx guys!!
i will try cm7.1 then.
cos after whole week of trying to get it work i just dont have enough will to continue. and i really need my phone working asap
SOLVED.
all i had to do is partition my ext3 to ext4
lol. well i also changed recovery from clockworkmod touch to amon ra.
and with amon ra i wiped everything and formated ext. i also used smaller ext. from 2048 to 700 and something.
then i partition from ext3 to ext4 and installed isc 4.0.4. and now everything is working.
as for calls... will see if it happens again.
