HTC Desire HD Root? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening.
Before I get moaned at for posting a question which had been answered 100 times, please
give me a second.
I've recently picked up a HTC Desire HD locked to Vodafone, with Android 2.3.3 installed.
I've been on this forum constantly for a few days, reading so many tutorials but no matter how I create my gold card, the update process always fails. I've tried numerous cards and 3 different methods for creating the gold card. But still I get the red text saying update failed. I'm pretty new to this kind of stuff, so if I post a video showing exactly what I'm doing could you please respond with exactly where I'm going wrong. This process should be really easy, but its driving me insane.
Please help, thanks.
-fishykipper

Give us more details, how does the update fail? CID incorrect? Make sure that you are using mmc2, and that you select the disk type properly in hex tool. Those are the two most common mistakes.

Thanks for the reply. It would seem I was using mmc1 instead of mmc2. The goldcard helper app from the Market Place is terrible,
Now rooted with a custom Rom.
Love it

htc desire telstra branded

hi everyone
right
just bought desire unlocked from telstra shop and i need to debrand
i try so many ways no luck
is any simple way for newbe?
i'm happy to buy a goldcard from one of you guys if this is the problem
please help me
regards
Follow this instruction to root and flash custom roms:
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/
In the beginning of that process you need to make a gold card, instruction can be found here
http://android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/
After everything is done, you should be able to flash whatever (compatible) rom you want. My recommendation is this
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...ustom-rom-for-htc-desire-with-online-kitchen/
I've done everything above on my Telstra branded Desire w/o any problem. So if you follow every step in the guides, it should go fine.
hi
thank you for your reply and help i try that and give me
FAILED (remote:41 model id check fail)
i not sure what else i can do
are you far from perth?
Me as well i get that same error i did upgrade when i 1st got the device not knowing about rooting! maybe the software i have in my sign. might be the issue... i was think about jumping ship to nexus one and go 2.2 on that device instead.. jump ship or wait it out?
What is the HBOOT version and software version on your Telstra branded desire? Did you use download the correct files for your version of the Desire?
I did get a failure message the first time I did it (don't remember the details of message), but it has to do with my gold card. In the end I realized that I should be using my Desire as a card reader when copying the gold card image onto the SD card, and after doing it again with an independent card reader everything worked fine.
H-boot 0.75.000
the software ver. is in my signature... i have tried doing the gold card multiple times and also using card reader 2 different types on 2 differ computers.. i am gonna wait for the 2.2 OTA hopefully or maybe jump ship on desire..
same here
H-boot 75
i done two gold card which i think (done ok) not sure if we can test in anyway
i really need to change this telstra rom
what else i can try??
Will be considering doing same in future..
Anyone done a debranding to the telstra rom successfully as yet..
when is the 2.2 out will it be available to users threw telstra etc?
yes when is it comin for telstra? i am about ready to jump ship to nexus one.. desire is nice but have to draw the line with branding crap... HURRY!
I have no idea why the rooting process didn't work for you guys. My Telstra branded Desire came with 0.75 HBoot and 1.16 software, same as mofoliar's. I didn't have any problem rooting it following the guide, beside the gold card creation part, so I can say confidently that the root and debranding procedure I posted above does work.
You guys would be better off looking for help at the corresponding threads at modaco forum than whining about it here, as people who have more technical knowledge behind these procedures probably won't be looking at this thread.
Two thing I remember reading before I root my Desire:
1) Some people say that the above procedure may have problem on some machines with 64 bit Windows. But it worked perfectly fine on my desktop with Windows 7 64bit.
2) Not every SD card can be converted into a gold card. Mine is a Transend class 6 16GB microSDHC, if that helps.
If you don't need root, you can just flash your phone in RUU way. But a goldcard is still needed.

and I'm sick of people asking questions without reading.
Go read carefully everything I posted here and what was said in the link I posted. You can find the answer to every question you asked very easily just by reading those posts again.
Given that you can't even read part of the instruction regarding the software version correctly, I'm not surprised that it didn't for for you.

I was wondering what rom version you were on simply because these T branded desires come with .75 and 1.16x versions. But thanks for the no help at all.

[Q] 2.2 Froyo

Hi, I'm with Virgin Mobile and I own a HTC Desire. I'm sick of waiting for the 2.2 Froyo Update. Anyone got any inside info on when they are going to roll it out? Also I like the idea of Rooting my phone to escape Virgins' hold over me, but am terrified of Bricking it. Is there a link to an 'Idiots Guide' of how to do it, or do I have to jump back and forth between posts and cut and paste my own guide? Thanx for listening, Rob.

Hi, If you just need the Froyo update, you do not need to 'ROOT'! There is a wealth of information on how to go about it. If you have not already found out what to do, check out the various relevant posts. unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE as to your requirements, it is worth your reading a few comments to know the consequences of the various procedures.
To start you off, this is one of the most straightforward manual Froyo update prceedures i've come across. I'm not yet able to post live links here so just cut and paste, or navigate to: 'androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available'.
It includes simple instructions. You'll need to create a "gold card" to perform the procedure.
I hope this helps.
Please post your progress just to let the forum know how you got on
Or you could just root and flash one of the many Froyo roms on here and be happy! Takes 15 mins to sort out with Unrevoked 3.
Thanks 842m8s, I'll get straight on it and let you know as soon as. I rooted my Desire today before I read your reply and tried to flash a custom ROM. The rooting worked fine but after flashing ROM the phone just kept re-booting. Minor panic until Nandroid saved me with recovery image. Phew. I'll go slow now. Will try your method tomorrow. Thanks again. Rob

Hi SBdags, I tried Unrevoked 3 and it just kept rebooting. 3 times I tried. Had to re-root and use nandroid image to recover. Followed these instructions to the letter. Hemorrdroids.net/one-click-root-thanks-to-unrevoked. Will try again if I can't find more simple method. Thanks, Rob.

Help i'm rubbish at this
Hello again, I just made a gold card with a 1 gig SanDisc. When I put it in the Desire it said it was damaged. Is this normal? I doubt it somehow. I formatted it to fat 32 with Windows and it seemed fine then. Bloody Phones, I love em. Should I have formatted the card inside my Desire instead of with windows? I tried to reformat and start again but Windows said the card is now 'Read Only'.

Hi, Everything now sorted. Gold Card worked. Flashed 2.2 Froyo successfully. Can't thank you all enough. Excellent site and members, I think I'll leave well alone for now. One question though. Will I still get updates from Virgin, or will I have to revisit XDA when next update occurs? All the best, Rob.

I'm pleased you got sorted, well done!
With regards to Froyo, as you are now sporting stock HTC Bravo Froyo firmware, your 'de-branded' phone can now only get OTA upates from HTC same as any un-branded Desire, and for now, to install these, I believe you will still need the gold card you created for future Froyo firmware update installations.
Maybe someone else can confirm that.

Hi again, I should add that my comment in my prevoius post to you is based on the assumption that you flashed with Stock HTC Bravo Froyo ROM and are un-rooted. If you rooted, and you install stock, you will lose root. To retain root, you'll need to follow whatever process your ROM release source dictates. Rooting is not something I claim to have a lot of experience on so again, maybe someone else can elaborate on this. There is a wealth of info on rooting related issues at this site, so just browse!
Froyo update
Hello, my sugestion is to do nothing and wait for the provider's update. Froyo is faster but has still bugs like filming in 720p (HD) is stuttering!!! Just sucks!!
So I have also a question, who shares with me the same experiance.
Watching tv programmes is still smaller than my HD2, witch I had..[/U]

Please help me.

Hi i have a virginmedia Desire phone, i have tried every meathod to get 2.2 update on my phone, even bought a 1gig card for goldcard which says is working, when i use gold card tool.
My current boot: 080, Version 123, rom installed, everytime i try to flash a differnt ruu to debrand the phone i get error code 140, i have tried 121, 115 roms without avail.
Any help at this point i would be greatful for.
Or i will just have to wait for VM to release it.
Many Thanks in advance

I hope you'll get help tho, nothing against you
one word for you: unrEVOked
www.rootmydroid.co.uk then click "desire" on the right
Hi mate, done that even lost my Normal HTC recovery console.
i read somewere any with 123, bootloader 080 can not update, or downgrade.
can anyone confirm this.
Yes unrEVOked root's your Desire, giving you access to all these nice Rom's on here
Pick one you like to the look of and flash it. You will keep you 0.80 HBOOT and can flash between 2.1, 2.2, Sense and AOSP as you like.
Please help me
You can help yourself by using a proper title for your posts instead of "please help me" and post in the right section, this section is for rom development.
Hi Mate,
Can you give me a little more detail about this, i have tried every solution no to man,
and i either get 121, saying ruu error code 140, or 115, stating error 170,
when i try to root and use the update.zip meathod i get to the assert part then the
install aborts itself.
I would love to someone to tell me if any one out their knows what im doing wrong, or if indeed its a case that my desire has some kind of branded lock on it by VM and HTC,, I am at the end of my tether trying to sort this out. Even bought a new 1gb memory card for rooting still no luck.
I did apologise one before to the admins, im new to this.
I don't think having a go really helps. thanks for your support.
Please could you explain the process, to make sure im doing this correct, sorry for being such a Noob!
Don't be sorry, just explain what your actual problem is
give ys a step by step guide what you are doing with what and where the errors are being thrown up
My problem is: Bootloader 080, Version software 123, Virginmedia unlocked but branded phone, tried all methods to downgrade to 121 so i can flash the 2.2 update.
121 = Error code 140 bootloader when i get to the signatures part, RUU
115 = Error code 171 Bootloader when i get to the singatures part, RUU
Update.zip meathod get the assert part then come up with loads of basic failer errors
then eventually aborts itself.
I made a goldcard = with gold card tool, works fine, but still i cant unbrand my phone, dont know if anyone has come across this, been to Mark Southby blog and no can help me from their. Hopefully you great chaps on here can.
With that bootloader you should not really need to goldcard, just root and flash another rom.
Do not flash the OTA or official 2.2 from HTC as it will just spoil your experiences in the future, if your really that picky about custom roms then just flash a pre-rooted 2.2 stock rom.
Just follow the unrevoked guide on rootmydroid (as per my last post) and you should have no problems (no RUU required).
Many Thanks
for the help i will try that 1st, and come back if i need more assistance.,
sorry for posting in the wrong place.

yep, took me literally 60 seconds.

AAARRRRHHHH HELP! I'm going to cry...

(RESOLVED!!)
Ok, so keeping it as short as possible. Brand new HTC desire on Orange UK. Full of all that Orange junk. Unrevoked root on it, all dandy. Spend at least an hour trying to figure out (I know google is my friend) why all the E:Can't nonsense was happening any time I tried making a back-up or flashing a ROM.
I moved onto alpha rev S-off solution at this point. Ran it, worked fine till part 3 then got the 'failed but don't worry it's not bricked'. Turn it back on and I've got a white HTC screen with black lines on normal startup, but POWER + VOL D works ok, but still S-on and and all the "E:Can't..." nonsense.
At this point I'm sitting in my onesie with a massive headache having not moved since about 1800 04/12/10, and now 12 hours later I've finally learnt my lesson, research as much as I can (thankyou google) and then ask any questions you cant find answers for before I plunge/stumble into another barbed and bear trapped solution.
So question is if I follow the recovery method used by Bubach28 and a few others, using .zips of the ROM the desire shipped with will it all go grand? My concern is that I didn't unbrand my desire. It's rooted but I didn't bother unbranding it. So now will I be able to use any old stock ROM or am I scuppered because I cant find an Orange specific zip or an Orange RUU?
I blame Oranges stupid 2.****e F-yo(u) version of Sense and my own stupidity equally on this one. Help and advice MUCH appreciated, otherwise I have a nice shiny new alternative for the spork I've always wanted.
Sorry for double posting this. I thought I'd make a new post as the one I had it in is quite off the original topic after 150 pages, and this being specific to orange based folks like me it wouldn't be of much use to many others.
(RESOLVED and happy as a pig in ****e for it!!)
Well as you said your phone is branded, therefore if you intend to run a non-orange RUU you will have to use a goldcard, then you can literally flash any ruu you want and you wont have any problems ... so for instance you could flash a WWE RUU and then start the rooting process again.
(Search the forum abit for how to create a goldcard)
The Orange RUU has never been released but I know someone who might be about to change all that...its a harsh lesson but it's another example of needing to research before jumping blindly into something they don't understand
Sleep... finally!

Not as harsh a reply as my bear head thought it was when i first read it. Lol. Only just awake. 7 hours sleep is very refreshing. Unfortunately I didn't read far enough ahead to realised that S-off worked on only very specific PVT4 Desires. Ah well. At least I'm not all lost. Let the Goldcard research commence! I'll post back when I sort it out.
Thanks RaymondErasmus and EddyOS.
Out of curiousity EddyOS, who could change that? And is it already available or a work in progress? I'm going to go down the goldcard route regardless as I don't want to be staring at Oranges bloaty demo and charged apps all the time, but somebody migght find it useful yet.

Getting places
Ok, so I took it a bit easier today. Slept well and nursed my flu ridden fiancee, but pottered away over the day at goldcard etc. So from what i've been able to gather so far is that on orange the only thing I can really start with is an early version of the standard sense ROM, anything with 1.15 on it because anything later causes major hassle with the radio bit.
I've searched around and again Bubach28 has had the same issue so her entries have helped alot. Problem is now I can't get a decent .zip with an early ROM on it. Bubach28 used one off shipped-roms .com but the only one I'm able to download is a much later release from early november, and even when I do try and flash it as the PB99IMG.zip it comes back with the error...
CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No
... and every other one wont complete the download. They all time out or freeze. It's probably my internet connection but anyway. Does anyone have any files that are stable and useable? The CID error made me think I'd messed up the goldcard bit but I redid it a few times and on a few different cards, including the one that came in the Desire (which most people said was the only one that worked for them, although i read other posts that said that micro sdhc didn't work at all so that was confusing too as the one you get is a samsung 4gb micro sdhc) and besides based on the tutorial on the unlockr it should be fine.
So anyway, does anybody have a torrent or an upload on rapidshare of something like PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.0
6.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip or something earlier? Should I be using a specific md5 checksum for downloading these .zip files? Or equally is there anyway to run the RUU.exe whilst limited to bootloader and recovery? I've tried a few different ways and searched a fair bit for solutions but I can't quite find the answer.
Idea? I'm sorry if the answer is staring me in the face or if I've missed that one thread in my flicking between them too quickly.
Ive recently flashed the following WWE RUU successfully.
This was done after the latest Orange OTA upset my rooted phone.
Run the RUU with the phone in the fastboot menu.

Enter fastboot in hboot ... the computer should be able to pick up the device and then you will be able to run the normal RUU.exe or you could do the PB99IMG flash method. It doesnt really matter ... use the method that you feel more comfortable with!
As far as trying to go as far back as 1.21 ... this isnt really necessary and might even cause problems ... you can load the latest WWE 2.29 ... As a RUU flashes Radio, Kernal everything. (Seeing as you say you have a working goldcard i see no real reason why you cant do this )
Ta-da!
Right, so I'm all done and dusted and very happy.
I honestly couldn't tell you where I went wrong so many times with the gold card business but here's how I did it in the end.
After trying the unlockr method and various others (all using the Android SDK) I found a very useful program called GoldCardTool (find it at hxxp://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/)
Tried with a 2gb sandisk but couldn't get it going, so like many people have said I just went for the stock samsung 4gb sdhc that came with the phone, and it worked first time. I opted for the PB99IMG.zip (I can't for the life of me remember where I got the .zip and it's renamed now but the .txt file tells me it's a 2.29.405.2 rom) method as opposed to running the RUU.exe as I had been having trouble with that before it ever got to a point where it mattered if my goldcard was done right or not.
Also, anyone worrying about Orange radio bit making your phone lock, i've not had any problems yet, so as RaymondErasmus said, just go for the latest one.
Very happy to be free of all the orange bloatware.
Thanks to RaymondErasmus, EddyOS and mikep99. Legends!
Excellent. Make sure you keep hold of the PB99.img file for in the future. You never know when it might come in handy.

[Q] Help needed - how to upgrade Desire in plain English?!

Hello,
I used to be more active on this forum while Windows powered phones were the only smartphones available. Now, personally I use iPhone, but last night, a friend of mine asked me for help flashing his Desire A8181 with a custom rom. Since I remember doing that for some friends couple of years back, I though it would be piece of cake. Oh boy, I was wrong, very wrong!
Looking at the posts here, instructions, you name it, everything looks like rocket science, even though I myself work as IT SysAdmin :cyclops:
I've downloaded one custom ROM, placed it on the SD card, but when I try to upgrade, the phone "boots" into black screen with the red triangle. Ok, I look further, some thread suggested that bootloader needs to be unlocked, tried that too, can't get the info out of the phone (Command error) while using fastboot oem... command. Checking too many threads leads me to insanity and it is impossible to follow. So, long story short, can someone please, write in plain English, step-by-step how to upgrade Desire with a custom ROM. If you use terms like goldcard or whatever else, please explain what does that mean. One thing I've notice in bootloader is S-OFF..
Well the fact that you are s-off should make things a lot easier. S-off is basically the ultimate unlocked state. You have more freedom than a normal unlocked bootloader.
Please post all of your bootloader details.
