Quickoffice usability. - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Folks.
Not entirely sure if this should've been in themes/apps but hey -- it's a question & the search came up dry.
Anyway - I've tried to use Quickoffice several times for testing purposes. There are some bug reports on the card in .txt format. I thought they should do nicely, but nooo-no. Insufficient memory was the disappointing error message. I know -- I know. The available memory on these things have a limit. I tried to shut down everything I could and got about 200 megs free. The error report was about 3,5 megs. I figured that ought to suffice even if Quickoffice was a nasty "hog". It didn't make one tiny difference. What am I missing here? Please help.
Regards
Elo.

virtual dj software?

hey there,
i am one of those guys who frequently goes out to student parties where most people only have a laptop with some random musicplaylist. so most of the time that even runs on shuffle and those people mix oldies with techno and so on...
wouldnt it be interesting to have a windows mobile app that was able to crossfade 2 songs from the SD-card? maybe one can add some effects. maybe even a little database wich gives you the BPM. one could scratch via the touchscreen and so on. (thinking about a small version of a program like: TRAKTOR DJ STUDIO)
anyone interested in developing?
i can do the GFX work : )
just let me know whether that could work.
Actually, I got this on my mind too lol.
Try this one: http://www.makayama.com/djmixer.html - I haven't tried it.
But I might do something on my own, but I'm n00b at this.

If you get it working then good for you. I had this for my diamond 2. Bought it on the marketplace and it didnt work they said if you have long song names or a more than 200 mp3's it wont work. I put it on my kaiser with a different sd card and it crashed on that.
try this though.
http://pocketdjstudio.x10hosting.com/pocket-djstudio.com/index_en.html
its more stable (well it at least works) I've used it a few times. the difference is djmixer searches for the tracks to built a playlist. where as on djstudio you load tracks onto each deck.

Free app today rocks!

Docs to go is free today!. Used to have it on my treo and was a great app. Normally goes for 15 bucks
Just snatched it up. I have all the document editors for free on Amazon.

now can anyone explain the pros and cons of all the doc editors that amazon offered.. Which is the best?
I like quick office pro the best. I've tried them all and it seems to be the only one that works right for me. I also like the displayed tabs on multi tabbed xls sheets.

Greetings All!
Although there are others this is the best comparison of these apps that I've seen:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1085173
The funny bit being that Polaris Office, the app included with our phones gratis, compares quite favorably with the competition.
Cheers, Henri
I prefer Quickoffice. I've had problems opening documents. It would pop up all garbled up. Quickoffice seems to keep the formatting the same without additional tinkering on my part.

quick office has problems with big pictures (gets pixelated)
but the thing I don't understand is why people need an editor on their phone? a viewer when you're on the move yes but why and how do you edit/create stuff on screen that small? *end my rant on office suite apps here*

I use it for last minute edits for school. I'm usually adding stuff to my papers in class and then emailing them off.
I also use it for work when I get a report I have to edit and send off.
I will add that I mostly do these edits on my Xoom. Occasionally if I'm not near it ill use my phone but I do prefer the tab.

Just so people know, you will need to install the full version first. I installed the full version from the android market first. Afterwards, install the key version from amazon. Then open it up and it'll say the version is from the android market but it's unlocked via the amazon key. Works great.

[FIX] ICS Media Server Battery Issue

Since the release of ICS on our phone I'd been having the issue of Media Server eating up 50-60% of my battery at all times and none of my pictures, ringtones or music showing up in any of the stock google apps. I know a number of people were having the same problem. I assumed it was kernel issue (it still might be) but i wanted to figure out if it's user fixable. To figure out what the problem was I pulled every last audio file off my SD cards and re-added them one at a time.
The problem seems to be with the m4a scanner/decoder in the media server. m4as use a different algorithm than mp3s so the 2 file types are scanned/decoded separately. The problem seems to be in my case that the ringtone for the facebook app pop which resided on my internal SD was hanging the scanner and blocking all the other media files on both SDs. Other m4as were causing problems too, none of which seem to be corrupt or dysfunctional. It seems that m4as scan before mp3s and m4as are more prone to catastrophic failure so they are the biggest offender.
tl;dr
The fix:
Step 1: Remove all m4as from your sd cards to a folder on your desktop via usb storage; ringtones and all. I dont have any AAC files (itunes format) but they are m4as as well so I recommend removing them as well.
Step 2: Add them back one at a time, each time disconnecting from your computer and checking battery stats. If the file is ok you will see media server fall off the list within a minute. If media server hangs at 50% then that audio file is your culprit.
Step 3: If the offending file doesn't show itself, remove all audio files from your sd; mp3, wav, aiff, whatever. Use a mp3 repair app (I use http://www.triq.net/articles/mp3-validator-mac-os-x for mac, theres eleventy-seven of them for pc. I dont claim to know which is best) to check and repair them and re-add them one at a time in the same procedure as step 2. Hopefully it wont come to this.
If none of these steps work start checking other media files. Corrupt video or image files might cause the same problem as they are all scanned by the media server.
Hope this helps
Not pulling 1.8k songs from my phone lol

No one told you that you have to.
That is definitely a WORKaround....LOL!!!
Think i will just stick to the GB ROM's for now. I have 26gb of AAC (m4a) music on my phone right now. I do appreciate you taking the time to figure this out!!!!
It took me about 3 hrs to get it working properly and most of that time was spent getting all the 20GB of music off my phone onto my computer. The troubleshooting aspect went pretty quick.
I have no empirical proof that the issue is caused only by m4as but i have an inkling that it is, just based on what i went through during the fix. So unless you only use m4a and aac audio files it actually is pretty easy. You can actually use the mp3 repair programs while the files are still on your phone to cut out a large portion of the initial time consuming dump.
Thanks for the tip, but this definitely isnt a fix btw for the record. And here is my little rant. Not towards anybody though. Just to google actually since there is no answer from them whatsoever regarding this issue.
Whatever media files you might have "mediaserver" thing shouldn't happen. We could be downloading some new ringtones and wallpapers that are "corrupted"...(how the hell are we supposed to know if the files aren't corrupted. And what the hell does it mean by corrupted? Was something supposed to really even care that files are so called corrupted? )
Does your 3 year old mp3 player drain battery by just having a corrupted music file?
Google should step into this and fix it....
I had the same issue, in fact I posted about it 2 days ago in the Q&A section trying to find a solution. In searching, and I did a lot of it, I'm sure I ran across your thread in a Google search and started doing what you suggested.
In doing that, and then checking to see if it would still run after reboot, even after having very little media left on my cards, that stupid media server would not stop running. So it got old pulling of little by little so I finally just took everything off and reformatted both my internal and external SD cards. Now I never see the Media Server running in the battery stats.
I've been slowly adding stuff back in, paying attention to the server and it doesn't show it running constantly anymore.
I know it was a corrupt file that ICS didn't like somewhere, a MP3 or ringtone...something it was scanning and getting stuck on.
It's nice having a clean SD card again. After many flashes and different ROM's, I had so much crap on there, who knows what it could of been. But it solved my problem; and thanks for the heads-up because I was at a loss as to why I was having this issue and others not! Very happy now
Did help on my phone.
Thanks alot!
Is there any way to get Media Server to ignore directories? I think I am having issues with it hitting a WebM file.
TBH, I don't know why I want it to scan my files. I keep them in a fairly organised way and would probably be fine if it never bothered to scan for them.
add a blank file named ".nomedia" in whatever directory you wish it to ignore. all subdirectories will be excluded as well.

What exactly does media server do, is it necessary to certain functions of ics, and could we just block it or remove it?

U resurrected an old thread why?..
MediaServer is the media scanner, you can remove, but your libraries wont be refreshed, there ARE apps online that can be used to replace, and offer 1-click scan, & scheduled scan. But as of official release, (for me anyways) this is a non-issue.
Plz don't resurrect old threads.. thx
If he had a question about the thread then there's no reason why he shouldn't all the question in it. What do you want him to do, start a new one?
Thanks for the media tip. I didn't even know this could be a problem. But know I know how to trouble shoot it if it occurs.

Yes actually, he could have simply made a response in Q&A section, considering this is a very old post for a very old bug that has been long since fixed
And considering all his questions, although are pertaining to posts topic, could have been answered with a google search, or even the lazy way (Q&A) would probably yeild results quicker, expecially since the topic doesn't actually suggest the presence of his question?,

because i followed a link from a different forum, i have previously googled this issue, a few months back, and asked in my devices forum and no one answered. There is no official ics for my device and it is still an issue for me. I found this link and asked a question. Isnt the point of forums to help others, also this thread isn't THAT old, and really, wouldn't you rather ppl post in an already existing thread rather than spamming the forum with multiple threads on the same topic, like they do in the GT2 forum, which is as annoying as ****.

Hi, I've been trying to find a fix for this issue and after reading all posts and doing several Google searches, I still have not found a satisfactory fix. Removing everything and putting it back one by one is a VERY time consuming work around, but no fix. Stopping the service and replacing it with 1-click or scheduled sync is also not a fix. I am using the latest 1.6 Paranoid Android ROM and this issue started all on its own without me doing any updates to the music or videos. Only changes are new photos and new or updated apps. I hope a proper fix is found sooner rather than later.

What worked for me was moving everything from the SD card, formatting it, moving everything back and rebooting. Hasn't run since and I've been checking on it for the past few days.

It really is the only fix, and it works. I too started removing things one by one until I got fed up and completely reformatted both internal & external sd cards a few months back, and the issue never returned.
I had one of the Devs tell me it's always good practice when making a OS change, like GB to ICS to start with fresh reformatted cards; because you don't know what junk is left behind on the cards, that the new OS is not going to like. It works, you don't need to stop any services, and its worth the time.

BBCode/HTML Glitches & Lists in Tapatalk/XDA App

Perhaps this has been discussed before, but I could not find any reference to it. I've noticed a little glitch in the HTML presentation. Here's an illustration by example...
Before a list
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
Ordered list item 1
Ordered list item 2
Ordered list item 3
After a list
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
There are no (deliberate) font or size changes in the example above, but it's easy to see that the font/size after the ordered list is considerably smaller. The same thing appears to happen after an unordered list, after centering some text, and I'm guessing there are others as well. This glitch appears on various browsers on all the platforms I've tested. I've taken a cursory look at the HTML source, but nothing jumped out at me. It might also be notable to mention that the "Preview Changes" view always displays text in the smaller size except for lists which uses the larger font. The larger size text before a list only appears in the actual post.
Although it's probably unrelated to this glitch, lists (both ordered and unordered) do not appear properly in Tapatalk or the XDA app. The list item tags seem to get ignored completely so everything just gets concatenated together. This makes it difficult for the reader to make sense of the lists that appear just fine in a web browser when using Tapatalk. I originally thought this was a Tapatalk app problem. However, it looks like this was an issue that has been resolved in more recent releases of the server-side plugin (according to the Tapatalk forums). I have no idea what version XDA is running or what version of the plugin has this fixed, but it might be worthwhile for some admin to take a look at this.
Thanks for reporting, but you might get more results posting into the stickied thread XDA App problems/features.

Thanks for the response.
The first half of my post actually has nothing to do with Tapatalk or the XDA app. That problem only appears in a web browser since it has to do with fonts and font sizes. From what I can tell, Tapatalk strips out those tags and uses its own font and size, so you wouldn't be able to see it there.
The second half isn't really a Tapatalk app problem either... it's just that the symptoms show up there. The small amount of research I've done on the topic tells me that the problem is most likely caused by an older version of the Tapatalk plugin being used on the XDA servers. I've used Tapatalk to view other forums and the lists appear just fine there, so I don't believe it's an app issue.
I've looked through XDA app thread and it's just filled with FC issues and Thanks button problems. I don't have a problem reposting it there, but it seems like this specific issue isn't a particularly good fit in that thread.

can s-voice speak text for confirmation instead of visual preview?

Hi.
S-voice seems to work more accurately for my "accent" than google's program so I've had a decent success rate with it for daily use this last week.
That said, I cannot tell whether this feature is available: when I ask it to send a text or email and give it the content, it asks me for a visual confirmation that it got the words right. is there a way to get it to speak back what I asked it to type up? I've spent last three days searching without luck, which suggests this doesn't exist yet so I'm just paying to obtain confirmation and closure.
Thank you for your time.
I found it strange it did not do this. Its almost all hands free up until this point if your using Bluetooth you have to look at your phone. Almost makes it pointless. I have not found away around it yet but I do agree it should read the text back to you.

Thanks for confirming. The one time I got google now to write a text message for me, it, too, did not repeat it outloud. Well, I just won't use that feature then, it's already gotten me in trouble with incorrect word.
I found a an application called "assistant" which sort of does it well, but it's just so.. rough. Always a compromise, isn't it?
Bummer.
