Hello. I have a AT&T GSM Touch Pro 2 and am visiting Spain soon for a little over a week. I am interested in primarily getting data services (not concerned with making phone calls). Can anyone give me info on if this is possible and what to watch out for?
I would like to get email access mainly, but would love to use google maps and other internet apps. Will these work still? Specifically, do I need to talk to AT&T at all and where or how do I buy/rent a sim card in Spain? Obviously, I want to keep this as economical as possible - how much should I expect to be charged?
Thanks for the help!
yes you'll be able to use your tilt2 in spain with data and 3G. spain's networks use 900/1800 gsm and 2100 3g (umts) and the tilt2 supports those bands.
There are several networks you can choose from in spain, among them are vodafone, telefonica (movistar), and Orange. Once you get there pretty sure they sell them in the airports but also in the supermarkets.
From my experience of traveling abroad (europe and middle east) the data rates on prepaid sim cards are pretty high. But its prepaid so it'll only use what you put in, no going over.
Try googling for vodafone spain, orange spain and telefonica spain and see if they're sites have the prepaid rates.
Overall you won't have to use your At&t sim card, which i highly recommend you don't because you don't want to come back to an enormous bill with international data (which i did once!)
Hope this helps and enjoy your trip
Wow! What a great and thorough response. Other than HardSPL for rom flashing, I have not specifically unlocked my phone. Do I need to do that before using a vodafone, for example, sim? I thought I read recently that AT&T will unlock your phone for this sort of thing - any experience with that?
Thanks again!

Oops, my bad, that completely slipped my mind. Yes you will need to sim unlock your device. Call At&t and they will provide the unlock code for you. Tell them you are going overseas for business and they will offer you an international plan, just tell them your not interested and they'll ask for you imei number (have it ready before) its found under your battery, on the side of your box, or by calling *#06# on your phone and the imei will pop up in a notification.
They will give you the unlock code and for your device to prompt you for the code, you will have to put a non-At&t sim card in your phone. So either grab one from a friend that has t-mobile or just wait till you get there and make sure you have the unlock code with you
Perfecto! Muchas Gracias!

Hi Guys,
Just bought my Galaxy S from a carrier in Portugal ( TMN ) and it is SIM locked.
Since there is no way to unlock it yet without paying some money to the carrier or to some specific unlock websites, i´ve tried to use one SIM unlock card that i had since my nokia times.
without this card i´m able to connect other carrier SIM ( vodafone) but after the card pin i´m asked to put the unlock key.
Then i tried with the Sim unlock card with the same card, and guess what... Works perfectly, no unlock key and vodadone card rocking hard on my Galaxy...
Here is the link for one of those on ebay... It costs 1$ lololol.

Hope it helps a lot of you that want to be free to chose the carrier that suits you better.

As a fellow TMN client, this is marvelous
i read somewhere else that someone had problems with this, sending every other call directly to his voicemail, so maybe there also could be some downsides to this. did you have enough time with that thing to test it well?
IMO i just want the thing unlocked. I could care less about the warrenty. I am always changing phones anyways.

I had it for more then a year on my nokia( stuck on tmn aswell) and with a vodafone card. Always worked flawless... But you can always test it. 2 bucks with delivery is not that expensive..

Sim works totally fine in my o2 x10 mini pro.
and a t-mobile sim works fine in the wildfire s
thinking it mght be banned from o2 or the unlock code doesnt work
*Tried manually putting in APN detail and still nothing
Hello, I have the same issue, did you ever manage to solve this?
Sadly it seems that you have been swindled. Try looking for a XTC Clip(That S-OFF's your phone and also UNLOCK the SIM lock of the phone)
ok, swindled how? do you mean its not unlocked?? and for a beginner...xtc clip?
XTC Clip is a device that unlocks your phone security (which includes sim unlock), and that would be better than buying any codes from around internet ... You may go find it in some shop, maybe they do unlocking via xtc clip, OR buy a device unlock phone, and then resell it ?

If around where you live there are people in your city centre selling phone cases for about £5 with trolleys ask them if they do a phone unlock. The place is crawling with them in Cardiff.

You need to do it in person. Did you google XTC Clip? It's really your friend...Even as a "beginner".
ok, so im going to go to the shop ( a different one today and try) myself...as for the xtc clip...i had a look but really wasnt sure how to make it work...
i think really that this may be a forum for people who know what they are doing..sorry... but thanks for the help.
Any other ideas let me know but thanks
ok, so here we go...
Went to the shop and they say the phone is unlocked. When i put an o2 sim card in, it does not require a pin when the phone switches on.
It works with tmobile sim, orange, virgin just not o2....
so it is unlocked just wont take o2.....
any ideas why?
Have you talked to 02 about it? Your simcard might just be too old for the phone.....

already have got a brand new 3g o2 sim in ...just got it last week from o2....phone also works with virgin just seems to be o2....
why??? please help..

Stab in the dark this,
try removing sim, Sd & battery....
then hold volume down for 2 secs, and power on while holding it...
You should be at the bootloader screen, see if theres an option to clear simlock, press power button to do so if its not done already, then try your O2 sim, if it does not work im at a loss, I would say its IMEI banned if thats the case.....
ok - ko ka - did as you said, when i selected simlock i got the following...
fat 32 init ok
open mccmnc file fail
open cid file fail
process done, reboot?
when i reboot, it still wont take the o2 sim...
and yes am working through the other thread also

There is currently no 'free' way of sim unlocking your device if you hang around long enough someone may write a program to do it but you may be waiting a while. Quite a few members have stated the unlock code can be obtained over ebay within 2 hours for around £9 which is a good price. You could also contact your carrier and tell them you want to take your phone abroad and use a different sim card in it while you are away to save costs. Sometimes they will unlock it for free.

got mine unlocked from o2 for free, filled in a form on their site and they emailed me the unlock code
just bought a SIM unlock code from here for £5
instant delivery, works perfectly. awesome
a warning about sim unlock: I got my nexus today from vodafone spain and as expected it was locked. I got an unlock code from ebay and it worked like a charm.
But, I like to play with new phones first, then restore defaults and set everything up the way I want it. The thing is, the galaxy nexus doesn't remember the network unlock code between factory resets, at least mine doesn't (yakju, came with ITL41F).
The codes work, but you may need yours again, so don't throw the number away
any code for three? im waiting the three to give me the code, about 2 weeks now
Hello Mark, is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus an universal phone? Can I use the unlocked version with LTE carriers in the future? I am in US and Verizon is the only LTE carrier I was wondering about using T-Mobile (HSPS technology) or wait for Sprint (my current carrier). I live in USA but I am thinking about moving to Japan so I wonder if I should just wait and maybe I will need to get one in Japan with one of their carriers... Also I love the forums and it is all great, but is there an IRC room for this questions as well?
Thank you in advance,

The GSM version can be purchased unlocked and used on any GSM carrier with their supplied SIM card. The GSM frequencies are listed for the Galaxy Nexus and they cover the majority of GSM international and US domestic carriers.
The LTE version, as far as we've heard, is only for Verizon in the US. Not sure what LTE technologies other carriers in other countries are using.
If you're interested in having an international capable version of the deivce, the GSM version is currently your best option.
Hope that helps!
Hi,
I would also like to purchase such a code, but how ist it with OTA updates? Still avialable?
How would it be if I later root my phone and put on a custom rom? Will it be still unlocked.
or
cant I just put on a custom rom, to sim-unlock the phone and save those costs?
Sorry for the noob questions.
Thanks

Custom Roms cannot sim unlock your phone as it isnt part of the system.
Flashing an OTA update or a custom rom will not affect your phone if you have sim unlocked it with a code.
MArk.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I have contacted my carrier (A1 Austria) and complained about the simlock. To make a long story short, they finally gave me the simunlock pin.
But recently I unlocked the bootlader and the unlock was wiped so I needed to reenter the pin. After I reflashed the original rom (back to stock) the sim was locked again.
And the most strange thing happened today. I just restarted the phone today (as every day) and the sim was locked again. So reentered the pin to unlock.
My question now, can it be that the simumlock pin they have provided me is not correctly working or is this a normal behaviour or a bug?
Br, Avi
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
That appears to be normal behaviour.
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question - if I follow all the steps to root my One X, does this mean it is open to all networks? I remember rooting my Desire, and installing a custom ROM, but I had to run another tool before I sold it on to someone on a different network...

Nope. Rooting doesn't remove the SIM/network lock.
Thank you for the reply Tiersten. Is there a way of removing the SIM/network lock? There are a few websites which want to charge in the region of £20 for an "unlock code". The phone I have is O2 branded, but I want to use my Orange SIM. Do I have to pay for a code?
HTC are offering unlock for a few quid, there's a thread in here probably a few pages back.
If I follow the procedure from XDA TV, unlocking the bootloader through HTCDEV, install CWM recovery, unlock and root stock rom from the XDA thread, flash the Leedroid Super SU, then (finally) the Leedroid ROM - has this removed any SIM lock and/or branding?

No unless there is a tool in the dev section that specifically design to unlock the sim lock. Root and flashing custom rom does not remove the lock on O2. If you bought the One X 2nd hand then either get the seller to go to O2 and get it unlocked for you as it is still linked to his contract or you will need a 3rd Party to do it.

Its not HTC. Its somebody on eBay for £1.44. Looks like it is legitimate though as quite a lot of people have said it worked for them.
I can confirm its legit, got it unlocked within 20 mins yesterday. You fill in the form at the bottom of the description.
BTW if you're an o2 pay monthly customer o2 unlock it for free
if you pay over $600 for the phone, then there is no reason why it should cost money to unlock it. now, if you bought it cheap with a plan through a carrier, then i can see why they would charge you. i wouldn't tolerate that nonsense. i paid 619.99 and if my ATT sim doesn't work, they are going to make it work if they want to keep me in contract. sometimes, all you have to do is get mad at the manager and make a scene. ;p
Thanks everyone for the help. I got in touch with O2, and as the phone was supplied with a business bundle, they unlocked the phone free of charge. I was provided with the phone by my company, but as they don't allow personal use of the company phone, I wanted to use my personal Orange plan out of company hours. O2, by the way, were very helpful!

If you've not got it from a carrier then it'll be SIM-free anyway so will work with any SIM in the first place
