[Q] bricked - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bricked my phone a couple of days ago and now I got a new phone so I'm scared to root.
Is there any .zip files to use in recovery mode to bring phone back to life if it does brick?
Are there other ways to unbrick?

If you can get into recovery mode then you aren't bricked. It's literally as simple as flashing a Rom or NAND backup.

You might want to consider using Heimdall instead of odin. You can find win32, win64, linux, and osx installers on the Bonsai main support website as it is more robust and much more configurable. For example you can flash a EB13 tar and EC05 modem at the same time.
Personally I avoid the Sprint EC05 ota like the plague going > eb13 tar > MasterKey unlocker > flash a rooted rom.

It's sponged if there is still life. A bricked phone is dead dead dead. If you mess up a root, you can always use Odin to get back to a working phone. Follow directions here:

How to flash modem, pit and or stock rom without using odin or a pc period.

I'm looking for a way to go from stock rom to a custom rom and back to stock without having to use a pc.
It would be cool if all of this could be done through clockworkmod or a version of odin that would run similar to clockworkmod on the phone itself.
Does anyone know a way to do this?
Has anyone heard about a person or an organization that is working on this sort of thing?

Well, i've downloaded ROMs to the Epic while on the go, rooted with z4root, done a CWM backup (before i ever flash a new ROM), booted into recovery, and flashed ROM of choice all without using a computer. I'm not as smart as any of the devs but it seems fairly easy for me this way.
Right now on my microSD card, i have several zipped ROMs on there (stock DI18, DK28, some custom ROMS as well) . I'll bet a lot of folks do the same as well.
There are some things you just can't do without odin.
If you read through the one-click root and recovery .bat file, you should be able to figure out how to root yout phone and install cwm without a computer. Remember to back up the original recovery if you plan on putting it back later without odin. You can then flash around to DI18 roms and get a stock di18 image to go back to.
If you want to mess with froyo, learn to odin.

I'm not sure about that. I ALWAYS keep a stock di18.zip on my sdcard, as a just-in-case. And I also know that noobnls post where I got it from also has a di18 modem in case your coming from a different firmware version...so there should be a dk28.zip and modem.zip right? If so why not?

Trying to flash an entire tar without odin or heimdall is dangerous... it is the boot.bin and sbl.bin that are most dangerous to work with... a wrong flash with sbl CAN brick the phone... as in, you can't even get to download mode. The sbl I know is different with Froyo. The other issue is with the modem, but modem flashes have been made that'll work in some cases.

[Q] Few questions about root and cwm3

I have read through this forum and I am still unclear about a few things. First off I have a vibrant and have been flashing roms/themes, ect. I just got a epic 4g and get things straight before flashing.
1. The epic is completely stock, can i just use z4 root then flash cwm from rom manager on market? Or do I need a different kernel first? If I do need a new kernel, could I just use one of the kernel flashers on the market like SGS Flasher so I do not need to use odin?
Every thread I have seen has been mentioning using odin for the root/cwm 3 process. I have a macbook pro and my desktop pc is ancient so I try to avoid using odin whenever possible.
2. Just to confirm, is it really hard to actually brick this phone? I have messed around with my Vibrant, soft bricking it a few times but never had a problem restoring a stock rom.
3. Once rooted and cwm mod flashed I can go to any rom right?
Thanks and I know there are very similar questions already posted, I just wanted to be 100% clear because some answers were really vague.
You can use z4root but you can't install cwm with rom manager on stock kernel. It is really hard to brick the epic and yes once rooted with cwm you can get to flashing. Odin is used just to flash stock roms. I used it to flash the dk28 froyo rom and I only use it if I have to. Try to get your hands on a windows computer to root it with cwm. You can run the root plus cwm that is stickied in the development section. Once that is done you are ready to go. Good luck
Im in the exact same boat dude. I've had mine for about 4 days and still haven't done anything else but update to DK28. I did the z4root first, then thee next day I did the update. Now my SU doesn't work and I can't unroot using z4root. Phone just starts to vibrate and then I get a FC. I dunno, going to have to odin once I get some time. Really diggin my epic, but the vibrant was so simple and fun.

While you may be able to use z4root to to root your phone, like musclehead84, I am under the impression that you can't install CWM through Rom Manager on the stock kernel (LINK supporting this, I may be wrong though). It may work with other kernels, but to flash those kernels, you need CWM... kind of a Catch 22. Not sure if SGS Flasher will work for flashing a new kernel, but if I recall correctly, I remember reading atleast one thread resulting the need for a restore after using SGS Flasher (Odin or Nandroid, can't remember which).
And your not using Odin for root/CWM, your using adb (included with the one click root and CWM download), which I believe can be run from the terminal on a Mac with the right adb version ('one click' OSX LINK using older joey-krim root method, but if your flashing a new pre-rooted rom anyway, will work fine).

Yes, it is fairly hard to actually brick the Epic. If you have issues flashing your phone with Odin, the most likely culprit will be the usb cable. I have also read others having luck with removing the micro sd card before flashing, or even booting into download mode (which is done by holding '1' on the keyboard while pressing the power button) while leaving the battery removed.

Yes, with a couple caveat's... If your flashing a froyo rom, you will need to make sure you also atleast update the modem to the proper one (i.e. DK28) using Odin, or flash the leaked 'official' beta update.zip while on a stock DI18 to take you to DK28 with modem, (LINK with instructions, would do this before bothering to root or anything though). And if you decide to convert to EXT4 (DK28 only), that's a whole other story.

[Q] need some help..

I feel helpless now, sorry ahead of time if someone instantly redirects me to a section of the website. I've been searching forums for almost 5 hours now and have gotten nowhere. I sent my phone in to get the brick fixed and had him root it at the same time... I'm running 2.3.4 kernel version 2.6.35.7 gb.eh17? So i'm assuming this is a stock rom? I have no cwm for my phone, i haven't been able to flash it or install it whatsoever, I get failed signature everytime. Now I understand that 2e as opposed to 3e (which I have) allows unsigned files to be installed, but I haven't been able to find a way to revert back to that.. There's kernels that I can download that come with cwm but those have root files in them too.. will this mess anything up? could I flash a kernel to my phone with the root files and in turn have cwm working? how do I know what kernels will work for my phone and firmware version specifically? I just want to do cool things to my phone now! I'm feeling i've wasted money to have it rooted since I can't do a damn thing with it right now.. SORRY for the long post, it's been 5 hours of running in circles and i'm quite frustrated. Any help at all is very much appreciated!!!
Lots of questions. First of all you can't flash anything in stock recovery not put out by Sprint or Samsung. Next you will need to use Odin to install CWM since no one click version works with GB. EH17 is a leaked ROM not official. Official version of GB is EI22. You can Odin in an EC05 ROM prerooted and then flash a EI22 prerooted ROM then if you want to change the modem flash the EC05toEI22 modem file. Here are some threads to help you:
Odin and how to use it:

EC05plus ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061912&highlight=ec05plus
Modems:

This method you will lose all data so make sure your contacts are on Google and not the phone. Or export your contacts to the sd card.
thanks!! the links are broken but I believe I know where to go with this now, all I have to do is install a new rom/cwm via odin? which will just replace my stock "rom" I guess. I've been scared to even think about that considering that's how I bricked it the first time. Thanks for your time!
Which links are broken? If you are able to get into download mode it is never bricked.

Phone not recognized by e4gtauto-sfx Help please

Title says most of it but will give whole back story.
On EL29 Rooted using the EL29 Odin flash then used the e4gtauto-sfx and flashed EL29+CWM. Used CWM did a backup and then installed Blazer Rom tried it for a few days and then wanted to try something else to see what else there is. So not thinking I used Odin and used the flash back to EL29 rooted and then lost CWM.
I am now trying to use the e4gtauto-sfx to flash back to EL29+CWM but it gets to waiting for device to be connected and will go no further. I have checked and unchecked usb debugging, installed and uninstalled drivers again and again and no matter what I do the e4gtauto-sfx will not connect to my phone again. I can use Odin fine and I can see it in my device manager the same as before other programs like CDMA Workshop recognize it fine but not the e4gtauto-sfx.
Out of ideas of how to fix it so here asking for any help to try to figure this out.
Get the EG30 Odin or get a kernel with CWM built in in Odin form. EL29 has a different bootloader that's why the auto root does not work on it. I always just flash EG30 and go at it from there fast and simple.

So I can use the "same" EG30 root flash for Odin just like I did the EL29 or some other steps required to flash different modems?
Yes just find a kernel with CWM already built in in Odin tar format. Use Odin to flash it and it will give you CWM back and you are fine.
My rule of thumb I just always keep EG30 tar around if I need it but that's me.

odin does not require a rooted phone to flash.
you can flash any rom/kernel/modem you wish providing it is a .tar file.

If Auto Root doesn't recognize your phone, basically "adb" doesn't recognize your phone. That is pretty basic functionality if you are on xda. You should go over FAQ #E3 in the 2nd post of the Auto Root thread, which is the troubleshooting checklist. I would reboot your PC also (or kill the adb server using Option E)
You don't actually need a PC to install CWM. Just copy the files in copy2sd\000root and copy2sd-img\000root to your /sdcard on your phone and follow the manual install directions in the 2nd post of the Auto Root thread.

I recommend Mskips toolkit, does all the hard work for you, will flash stock and open ODIN by itself! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680
