Hey guys, Thanks ahead of time for the help.
Like I said I'm probably beating a dead horse here but I'd appreciate a shove in the right direction.
I just Rooted my phone using simple root and I was looking to install a custom rom when I realized....
I have no idea how or what I'm doing.
APK?
ADB?
NAND?
all things I dont understand.
And while I did understand you can un-root your phone I never did think to look into how before I rooted my phone <not that I can imagine wanting to> Especially since many of my buddys work at a service and repair store and if my phone ever does need service, its no problem.
so while im not to worried about un-rooting at the moment if you feel like giving me some info I wont argue! haha
more importantly tho, What do I need to know about installing custom roms/themes etc and does anyone know how to get some free wifi tether going on?
downloaded free wifi tether from android market but it doesnt work for whatever reason.
Thank you and please forgive my ignorance, you guys are on a whole other level.
tried to install and use Rom Manager but got "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
any idea's? cant fix permissions threw app either, gives the same error

That sounds like you don't have root permissions. Do you have a superuser app in the system drawer? If you don't then you probably don't have root access.
I am away from my pc right now but when I get back I will post a link to a guide that webs05 wrote will help explain a lot.
Welcome to the community!

Thats kind of the impression that I got, yet a couple of the Root only programs I'm using are working.
If thats the case its easy enough to redo if i lost root somehow but atm I dont know how to revert it back haha, ugh I hate being a newbie!
look forward to your later post, ty.
it does sound like you are rooted but you are getting a error trying to use clockwork is the img that is used in simple root does not allow superuser access for some reason... More than likely
ok my first question is can you boot into recovery? You do that by turning the phone off and, once it is off holding Vol Down and the power button. You should be able to hit the down arrow once and hit the power button to boot into recovery.
You should be able to do this just fine. This is where you will flash ROM's. You can do this with clockwork, but you need to flash their recovery image. I personally prefer look up ROM's here to see what's going on with them and flash them that way but the choice is yours.
You do need to find a ROM that you like and you need to flash it either with your recovery or from ROM manager.
This guide should answer a lot of your questions. If that helps thank Webs05 he gathered up the info and put it in one place any other questions feel free to ask.

sounds like you're not rooted correctly.
first link is not working for me, I will check out that second link when I get home and try that. But I presume this is the one I found it by the user name.
Both extremely helpful posts, I swear I searched for hours trying to find something similar, TY I'll let you guys know my outcome when I get a chance to try it out.
I'm starting to think I'm missing a whole second step after doing Simpleroot for 1.47 but not able to figure out what exactly that is haha, Oh man I am so about to give up haha

What steps exactly did you do?
Only the ones in the simpleroot post where you click through the 4 buttons for each step?
If so, you should be rooted, but you have to load a ROM to continue. If so, follow these steps here for the basic stock rooted ROM:

Follow it from the NOTE: through step 18 and you'll be golden

Once you get it rooted you will never want stock again.
Were you able to boot into recovery?
Sent via the Sprint HTC EVO
Yes, I am able to get it into recover, Power+ volume down and then recovery and then I can hold power and volume up for an options menu...If I recall, did this the other night, cant remember why.
Its starting to sound like your rooting process did not complete. Right after hitting power and vol down then selecting recovery you should see some options i.e. backup/restore, flash zip from SD card, wipe... If you see those download a ROM and put it on your SD card. Go back to recovery select wipe and you need to wipe dalvik cache, cache, and factory settings ( can't remember what exactly its called) then return to the previous menu and select flash zip. From there its pretty self explanatory. If you can't see anything I just said it sounds like you need to try rooting from the beginning again. Hope that helps.

I actually Am able to get to this part now, And I am able to use wireless tether app now so I presume i'm rooted correctly
ooooow, and I just flashed a ROM to it, so now I understand how I did that, what If i want to change roms or loading screen etc? ugh! lol
I did this (sorry it wont let me post whole link because I'm a new user) so its this without the spaces.

good to hear!
If you want to change ROM's remember to always do a Nandroid backup first. That way if it messes up you have a place to start over. Whenever you are switching to a new ROM it usually helps if you wipe. Sometimes you don't need to but if you get stuck in a boot loop that means you should have
Keep reading and searching and you will find a lot of things to make the phone exactly how you want it. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.
Same Problem
I'm having the same problem regarding the privileged commands error. I just tried your advice with the power off and then power on while holding the volume down button. That definitely booted into ClockworkMod Recovery. I'm now at the point where I have a series of options. Which should I use?
- reboot system now
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- nandroid
- partition menu
- advanced
- +++++Go Back+++++
EDIT: Just read previous responses more carefully. I guess maybe I need to rewipe tonight. I thought I didn't want to install a rom until I'm able to flash clockworkmod recovery. I'll take any additional advice not listed here.

If you are able to boot into recovery then you should be able to flash a custom ROM. If I am correct you probably used the simple root method. The img that you flashed at the end of that does not allow superuser access for some reason. You need to flash a custom rom.
If it shows clockwork at the top when you are in recovery then you should be able to flash a new ROM from ROM manager or you can just place the ROM on the root of the sd card and select install zip from sd card. Just make sure to wipe.
Hope that helps.
Hey Guys, can anyone help. I started following the instructions but forgot to put the zip on the phone prior to, I was planning on flashing the Eagleblood ROM. I was thinking I could mount USB from recovery connect to the computer then get the zip over.....that's not working apparently. I only have internal strorage and no SD. Right now I can't boot up, when I hit reboot it just gets stuck at the T-Mobile screen. Can anyone help me get past this?
One last thing I forgot to add as I'm sure someone would say well just do a restore. When I rooted with the method I was never able to do a nandroid or backup through recovery as I kept getting an error again because I only currently have internal storage. I am running the v5.0.2.6 recovery with stock ROM prior to this current issue.
Thanks
First, wrong section to start Thread. This should be in q&a or a response to the thread whose instructions you where following. We have no idea what instructions you are taking about. Please read the stickies and follow the rules. This is not a development post in any form or fashion.
Second, (and i'm only answering cause.... I don't know why, you won't help yourself, not sure why anyone else should) USB storage is fine, use that function in cwm and flash from internal.
If you still can't figure it out, buy an sd card. 2gb for 5 bucks

Hey all! So, a couple weeks back, I flashed a BETA ICS ROM onto my Inspire (Desire HD). Being my normal ignorant, and noob-like self, I completely ignored the fact that the thread said "DEVS ONLY!"
Well, flash forward a couple of weeks, and my Inspire is all but bricked. The ROM did not have mobile data yet, did not have a connection to the micro-SD card, and it was not touchscreen ready yet. I have tried ADB, but to no-avail, my file system knowledge and overall lack of knowledge put me quite a predicament.
I have flashed many ROMs before, but I sincerely messed up big time on this try. So, would any of you be able to help me find a cure for this important issue? Is the fix really simple and easy, and I am just a bonehead?
Thanks!
Not sure what your issue is. You never clearly stated. Does the phone not boot? Stuck in the splash screen? you want to flash a new rom?

Oops, sorry! My problem is that my phone is stuck on the developer ROM, and I would like to fix it somehow. So, yes, I would like to get another ROM, but I have to remove this one first. The phone itself works great, but with no wi-fi, mobile data, and no touchscreen support, it is hard to live with.
Your nowhere near bricked. Going to ask the basics. Did you make a backup before hand? Did you have another rom on your SD card.?
If you answered yes to either then simply boot into recovery and flash the rom/ backup. You mentioned flashing roms before so I left out the steps.
If you answered no then you have two options. You can mount the SD card from within cwr. So download a rom on your PC. Mount the sd card, then flash away. Or take out SD card and use an adapter/other phone to transfer a new rom.
I was not smart enough to back up onto a computer, but I did back up onto the SD card. The only problem with this is that the ROM, and my computer, will not recognize that there is in fact an SD card inserted into the phone. So, in other words, it's like not having an SD card at all.
CWR will still read the sd card. Trust me. boot into CWR and restore your backup. And you be good as gold
Thanks! But, what exactly does CWR stand for? Haha, I'm not the most knowledgeable on the topic of Android, but is it like Clock Work Mod?

yeah. CWR stands clockworkmod recovery
Okay, in that case, I'm not sure. All of my old files (CM7, CWM, etc.) were on the SD card, and it is unreachable. I have tried to boot into CWR, but it just gives me a black screen. I feel like this thing is just unable to be fixed!
its fixable. just the black screen in CWR is an obstacle. worst case is you have flash an ruu and start over with the whole rooting. i remember reading about the black screen in CWR give me a few minutes to find them to see what to do next
Okay! Thanks a bunch!
Pull the battery and put back in
Press and hold vol-down
Press power and bootloader will start
Select recovery using vol keys and press power
If you have a backup (you really should, and and if you don't consider this experience a learning one), restore it by selecting the backup / restore option
If no backup, goto mounts and select as storage, plug usb into pc and copy your favorite Rom over, then select back and flash from zip, select the zip and you should all be back up
But please, please I'm all for people learning and experimenting, but might be worth reading some of the basics guides and notes on roms before flashing the next one. Oh, and if I forgot to mention.... Do a backup before flashing ANYTHING saves heartache later, the enjoy

ok i couldn't find the specific thread i was looking for. i remember it being stickied but couldnt find it. did find something that might be usefull but it depends on if you have access to an sd card adapter or other phone to transfer the file needed to reflash CWR. If not i would suggest trying to see if flashing an ruu to help.
edit- I'm confused now. thought you said that when you boot into recovery all you get is a black screen?
I am new to the root world but am good with things of the sort, just more used to it on a computer as opposed to on a phone. I am new to this site but it's pretty clear that this is the place to go for help. I have followed instructions to a T and the root simply did not work for me. Basically I followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 and superuser just didn't show up in my apps. I read around and saw that if you get an error message at the end (which I did) that the root still worked and superuser should be there but not for me. I'm on build number UVKL1 if that helps. Any advice or help would be appreciated or at least point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.
try downloading superuser from the market
>>>>
*On ODIN, Select the PDA button and browse to the recovery-cwm-hercules.tar
*Select Start and see the magic do its thing.
*It should flash the file to Recovery and reboot the phone.
*Take the battery out again and now boot into recovery
*Power off phone, unplug USB, Hold Both Vol up + Vol down and Hit power

Between those 2 lines, u must have the phone without the back cover so u can pull the battery as soon as the phone restarts and u c the Samsung screen where it says T989, also u must unplug the phone before u put the battery back in.
Btw, u should install Samsung Kies so the pc gets the proper USB drivers, and it may not work at first try, I got my phone bricked the first time, would not go beyond the Samsung screen, it will show a corrupted OS and will ask me to restore using Kies, so I try the steps again and it worked, don't get scared cause it doesn't work, get scared cause it worked!!!
Are you sure you are using the right superuser file? You can't use the one they link in the OP if you are on 2.3.6. If you are on 2.3.5 it should work.
For 2.3.6 you need:
su-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip
Also if you plan on flashing a ROM right away there's no point in giving the stock rom root, just flash a custom ROM which will come with superuser.
Listen bro once u have recovery installed it is easy listen to the guy a few post up about installing recovery first! Its easy select PDA make sure phone is connected then start. Now for root it is super easy!!!! Download file from computer put it on the root of sdcard. That means no folders. Just click the file and drag it over to ur internal sdcard. I repeat internal........now on ur phone once u disconnect from computer boot into recovery u want to go to install zip then install from internal zip and flash it. Now it might fail the first time DO NOT LEAVE RECOVERY stay in and flash that file til it says complete it might take 3 or 4 times. Now this works for 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 so u good to go bro. Trust me this file works.

Su.3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip will work on 2.3.6 as well...but gives you a failed alert in recovery but upon reboot actually installed. worked for me perfect, it failed, rebooted, there it was first attempt

Thank you to everybody for responding so quick, hopefully it helps me out. I do have Kies and tried multiple times like one or two of you said. I tried quite a few times and superuser just didn't install. I even went step by step with a video at the same time. As far as flashing custom ROMs goes instead of the stock one, I'm kinda lost. Like I said I'm new to this so I'm not exactly sure what ROMs are best or what they do different than others. I've seen some things around that look interesting but what I got from it was that I need superuser before anything which I'm trying to do but obviously having issues. I'll give it another go and report back, any more information (in beginner language) would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure I'll be able to pick this up pretty quickly with some assistance.
I got it done! Thanks to everyone, I actually got it done using 3.0.5 and worked perfect, no error or anything. I guess the determining factor was loading from the internal sd card instead of the external. Not sure why the video I watched specified internal sd card. O well, now I have Superuser...now what should I do? Lol, some basic tips, tricks, and cool stuff to do would be great. Thanks again.
Make a clockworkmod recovery backup before you do anything else. this way you can start over if you screw something up.

Always, on any new phone, rule #1 after u root !!!
Don't forget!!!
In regards to what to do after, take some time, read around so u can get an idea of what ppl has done, what they have screwed and how to avoid it, depending on ur version some apps are locked and if u want to use them u may have to freeze apps instead of removing them, then again u can go and start testing ROMs till u find what u like
Glad we could assist ur in ur quest!
Not too sure what clockworkmod is but I'll check that out because I've seen it quite a few times. Thanks a lot to everybody, this has been a very responsive first thread and I appreciate it. Any recommendations on what mod is most popular/best from experience? I've seen a decent amount of good feedback from Juggernaut and a couple others I kinda forget the names of. I'm thinking of getting an ICS type ROM but I see so many other types of things out there, I'm just looking for some direction/how exactly I go about it. Besides the backup, should I do anything else besides flashing the ROM with Odin? Thanks yet again for any responses that are helpful.
Once you choice a ROM you hook your phone to PC and install it on the root your Sd card (meaning not in any folders) now clockworkmod is what you're going to use to do your back up and flash a ROM. Hold up down volume and power until it vibrates then you can just release the power...what comes up is clockworkmod. Do a backup... Once your finished the back up your ready to flash your ROM..be sure to follow the devs direction on doing a wipe and clearing cache..then go to external storage find the file you installed

O ok that makes sense...although when I tried it said "Can't mount /sdcard" ...guessing that's not normal?
Hello, Wondering if anyone here could help out. I recently went from MIUI US ICS rom to CM9 and love the latest build of CM9. I had not tried a backup of the rom after flashing to CM9, but noticed that Rom Manager updated at play.google.com and then I decided maybe I should make a backup of CM9 sine it was shaping up pretty nicely as I've been setting up apps, etc.
Well, I can't get into recovery. I can boot into the bootloader and it shows Revolutionary as the boot loader and I can get into Fastboot but if I toggle down to recovery and press the power button it just jumps back to the bootlloader screen. I can't get past this.
I'm tempted to put a different recovery on here now as the rom manager didn't work out even though it came stock on my CM9.
But before I risk bricking my phone, I was hoping someone here could back me up a bit and give me some input. I really don't know that much about this.. I can root phones, install recoveries, etc., but if something goes wrong I'm not knowledgeable enough to actually understand what went wrong and how to fix. I am guessing that recovery is not actually installed here and that Revolutaionary (what I used long ago to get root) wasn't planned to be the boot here.
Help please anyone!!!!!

It's been a while since I've done someting like that. By this you mean place a recovery package on the zip card, press the power button at the bootloader, then let the phone install the recovery when it runs thru the fastboot screen?
If yes, great, I remember that, but which recovery should I download? And what about rom manager on CM9? Does it care which recovery is installed?
I appreciate the knowledge here. IT sure is appreciated when things go wrong for folks like myself!
Oh, I should point out that I can stil boot into the phone and use it. The whole issue is limited to getting into recovery to create and/or restore backups of the rom.

1st off, I should shun you for being corrupt with CWM, but I'll help ya out.
Use the search bar and type in "Smelkus recovery" find a themed recovery zip you like and rename it "PC36IMG.zip" and place on the root of your SD card (in no folders) boot to boot loader and let it search, press volume up to update recovery and boom! You have new, better recovery.
As for flashing CM9, check out Jmzs CM9 nightlies. Its better and (supposedly) almost has Wimax working. Once you flash an Amon Ra based recovery, CWM becomes basically useless. So ditch it for the good of everyone. ENJOY

Well can I pick your brain once more? I decided to update my wifes phone from MIUI to CM9. She happened to have Clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2. on the phone which I recall was put there by whatever rooting routine I used. Before installing CM9, I tried to update the recovery with Smelkus from the clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2 that's on the phone to smelkus, but when I try to flash it, the smelkus recovery just sits there "parsing" so when I bail out and go back to check, the clockwork version recovery is still there.
This phone was rooted with Revolutionary but I notice that S-ON is still active. I read that S-OFF is not necessary to install a recovery --- at least not the clockwork version that is on this phone. I'm not sure if that's causing the problem or not. Any advice?
Try this one. It should work.

Hello... d-b-s
By chance have you seen this recovery located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29266458
I have a spare evo that is sorta-bricked or sorta screwed, not sure which... It has a SD slot that seems to be locked out. Nothing can be read from it but I did get it working once but lost it. ANd it also doesn't boot unless I have a power plug in it, but otherwise, it works, flashes, etc.. it's got CM9 right now in it but again somewhat useless without the SD memory.... anyhow, it's been a plaything for me figureing I'll either fix it, learn or kill it. None has happened yet.. but in searching for getting a recovery installed that uses the screen hard buttons versus the volume (this rocker switch on volume is broken too), I installed this recovery and it's different than anythign else... fully menuized .. real customized, and thought I would mention it to you.
If you have a look at it, let me know what you think.

Bill.

I'm familiar with twrp. I don't much care for it though. A dew tricks with smelkus is it has touch scrolling, and the bottom buttons work as up+down+back+select..
Also I might know of a fix for the SD card not being read. I'll get back to you with that.

d-b-s,
That would be fantastic if you had a clue on the SD card. I did try a FastBoot string that reset it once the first time and it worked, but somehow I lost it again. I think a corrupt or defective SD card started the whole problem and restarted it when I put it's data SD back in.
Do you ride a motorcycle or have a boat? If so, stop by here please www.streetglo.net and pick yourself out something. I'd like to send it to you. You have helped me more than you know. I can't reciprocate with knowledge but I have other ways.. Let me know what you see you like. Thanks!!!!
Bill
P.S. Yea, I know you don't want anything for your help.. Just pick out something you can use and I'll be a better man for it. At least I think it works that way!

I really appreciate the kind gesture but I wouldn't like anything in return. Helping people with their problems and teaching them what I know is enough of a reward.
Please do me a favor and enjoy yourself. Best of wishes to you.
