memory card prepare long - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I turn on my phone, I must wait 3-4 min for memory card to prepare...Meanwhile I can not use app installed on card. Is that normal? Memory card is 2gb...free 800mb.

yes that is normal. The apps on memory card will load a bit slower. That might be the difference of read/write speed between the phone flash memory and memory card flash memories (although both are flash memories, there might be difference)

this also happens when I disconnect phone from PC

Yes it is also normal. Im talking about the froyo default apps2sd.
There is no difference when phone gets rebooted or gets disconnected from a pc (disk drive).
In both cases, the memory card apps will be freshly accessed again.

Only thing I would try,(although the wait sounds normal) backup your documents format the card fat32 with an advanced format tool better than windows.

Either limit the amount off apps which you have, or better still, the ones which you frequently need (or use) keep installed on the phone.
Same problem occurs with my device, i noticed that when it boots do not touch it for at least 2 minutes or wait a lot longer for the apps to load correctly (not market icons). You can change the cache size for the SD card via an app in the marketplace, but you require superuser permissions to do so.
hope this helps

I think this is what i'll do too if i were in your situation.
I've experienced it before, once you formatted your SD card, you'll notice the difference..

Foroyo A2SD EPIC Fail (read)

go through your apps in froyo... the sizes shown are what REMAINS on internal storage the amount stored in the /sdcard/.android_secure isnt show
i.e
flash 10.1 shows 8mb
if you move to phone it shows 12mb
only 4mb is moved from the phone to the sd...
this is pretty similar on most apps
which means
its near to usless
There are apps that simply cannot run entirely from sdcard, since their libraries and/or files must reside on non-removable memory in order to guarantee the OS integrity: Flash plugin is one of these.
The most apps left 100/200 kB on the internal memory while moving 2+ MB on the sdcard. I think it's working.
root apps cant run from sd .... but apart from that ...
all data is stored on internal memory too
ie
swype had 4m of data on internal memory
our hacked a2sd worked better lol
Yea worked better..NOT.
I mount sd card to trasnfer files on PC, and half of widgets or programs gets FC's, crashes, or starting to act weird..

Ehm yeah...that what pretty much what JDouce said.
+1 Froyo's app2sd is much worse compared to app2sd+
If you mount sd card to pc via USB, it will take a long time for that to happen.
And after you disconnect USB mode, it will take a long time again to reregister all the apps in sd.
The original app2sd+ is a much better one IMO.

+1. A complete waste of time. The apps dont fully install on the SD card like when using app2sd+, the OS seems to like "forgetting" about any apps installed on the SD after a reboot and after so many installs refuses to install any more apps despite there being plenty of space left. I'm going back to 2.1 until someone gets a proper app2sd solution working as I'm not impressed with the android one at all.
I think Google wanted to keep the option of physically unplugging the memory card 'on the fly'. It wont work in 'our' APPS2SD.

which is stupid because you need to take out the battery before you can get complete access to the sdcard...
Btw, i've got a question : why when accessing the phone sdcard as an usb UMS device does the phone have to unmount the sdcard from the phone filesystem and remount it to USB in an odd invisible to the phone FS way ?
couldn't access to sdcard be available to both phone AND USB at the same time ?
evidently its possible because u can push and pull files from/to the sd with adb
and since froyo doesn't have ext partition support they just patched out "our" a2sd ... i guess this is intentional
ffs memory isnt expensive what is it with htc and 512mb .... whatswrong with 4gb... and make it 20$ more

No, it is not possible to take out your memory card while your phone is running with APPS2SD or APPS2SD+ without making your system unstable.
Googles APPS2SD implementation seems to be a lot like Symbians (which is a good thing IMO).

Actually you can, there is a widget for that. I believe it is called SD split. I use and recommend it.
I love how people are ragging on an implementation that, last I heard, was a quick and dirty port of a ROM that was accidentally leaked. Maybe it's not finished? Maybe the Desire's real implementation will be better?
Such impatience.

i didnt mean evidently its possible to take the sd out ... i meant evidently its possible for a pc and the phone to have acess to the sd together
Froyo gives 1/2 a2sd for now
-> very few apps on market actually support a2sd
lets hope so googles fixes this in gingerbread
The usb mass storage on my HD2 worked the same way, if you use it u cant rum apps which are installed on card (and have all files on sd card). So whats wrong here?
on the up side read/write to sd is much quicker now since a2sd+ isnt stealing a load of transfer speed

Froyo A2SD+ SD card corruption

Tons of new ROMs coming out now based on OTA and adding A2SD+. But one big issue. Quite a number of people have reported problems with corruption of their SD cards when setting the Desire into Disk mode and connecting it to a PC. I've read it the first time here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7463184&postcount=348
and I can confirm it is reproducible.
Regardless if connecting to Windows or Linux, the card gets corrupted. It does not matter if you properly eject the drive. The Desire will respond saying the SD card is Read Only, and the only thing that one can do is to repartition it to fix the card.
I don't know what A2SD+ application everyone uses in their ROMs but I expect it's all based on some common version like the one put in from ieftm. As this is a serious issue it would be great if all you ROM cooks could look into it and try to fix it. Alternatively it may be a good idea to produce non-deodexed versions that save a significant amount of memory when installed normally without A2SD+.
Thanks for considering
I have this problem aswell its a bit of a nightmare there are a few files on my sd card that I can't even delete using andexplorer or my pc. I think the only way would be to remove my card and format it. I have never had this problem before only when I started using the 2.2 rom.
Noticed it before, i took the SD card out and put it into a cardreader, couldnt do anything in windows, said it was read only. Access via USB cable worked though.
Not that much of a issue for me, I mainly transfer files via Wi-Fi anyway, but I guess thats the explanation for the read-only behaviour.
Happened to me today, however I restarted the phone and everything seems okay now... :/
edit: nope, connected the phone again, chose "charge only" and then disconnected. The notification about my card being corrupted occured again, tapped on it and it went away... Dont know what to think..
I have the same problem .. And now it seems like the SD card is totally corrupted. Its not even possible to do a format
Okay thats it... Doing the titanium backup, nand backup and flashing some rom w/o A2SD+... :/
Out of curiosity guys, did the corruption of the SD card occur to the stock SD card that came with the Desire? I had the same problem with the stock card..
It seemed to unmount 3 or 3 times over a week and the next thing I knew it totally died and could not even be reformatted.. Happened on stock 2.1 that came with my Desire.. after I swapped to me own class 6 8gb Transcend I never had the proble again.. Just gonna upgrade to 2.2 now.. *fingers crossed*
Oh and yes.. I use A2SD+ on Modaco's 3.1. But that was after that card got corrupted..
I'm using card that came with the phone.
I'm going to try another Froyo Rom, just OTA rom rooted and we'll see.
Edit: I made my ext3 partition with ROM manager, if it makes any difference...
God dammit!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747480
Yes its the card that came with the phone .. but it happen after i created the 512MB EXT3 Partition ... and I'm running this ROM : http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775&highlight=official it doesnt even use A2SD+
I dual boot my pc with windows 7 & ubuntu.... windows 7 scan and fix has repaired mine numerous times
I have class6 A-DATA 8GB and no problem. But with my last G1 i haved same card and with swapping goes to hell... I now correctly unmounting and disconnecting mobile from PC, after i save from PC to card. Flash have problems with writing.
This looks like a serious problem - it happened to me twice already. Devs, please have a look at this!
I have also had similar experience, SD card corrupt, yes it was the original card that came with the phone, EXT2 partitioned and using APSD+
Now why this happend is a mystery, but something I noticed when I tried the SD card in the PC - it was recognized, but said it must be formated, so I tried but it only saw it as a 32mb capacity!!! (it still would not format though - failed format..and since is no longer reconized at all..)
But, this made me think it "MAY" be something to do with the fact that when I did the Ext2 partition I seem to remember it also created a 32mb swap partition, or using Ext2 instead of Ext3. I have since learnt that it is advisable NOT to created a swap partition, so with my new SD card, after more reading about Ext partitions etc, I have only created only the Ext3 partion as I understand this is better than Ext2 and is less prone to corruption, and no swap partition and have had no problem since!
See this excellent post :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7458565&postcount=8
It would be interesting to have some input from one or two of the developers with knowledge in this field to get an idea why this happens, and how it can be prevented.
It is also possible the the SD card was going to become corrupt anyway... with or without the help of Ext? / APSD+ - it does happen!

Try in windows: start > run > chkdsk x: /f
where x = desire drive letter.
I believe i did this in recovery mode > mount usb.
That's what happens when you don't want to use Froyos own A2SD implementetion because "widgetz doesnt workzz on dat."
Apps are not meant to be on an external EXT partition.
Wait until ROMs like CM have built in A2SD+, these hacky shell scripts can cause serious problems for the SD card.

Windows can not access EXTx partitions. As such is unfortunately not possible that it could possibly repair a broken SD-ext partition A2SD+ uses.

I can confirm the corruption without any APSD+ ROM
I had a Stock Orange FR 2.1 ROM, and the 4Gb card that came with the phone get corrupted definitively (recognized as a 32mb capacity too, it has something to do with the Cylinder-head-sector combination).
Anyway, I'm going to try APSD+ with a class 2 PNY 16Gb, and tell you then if I get a corrupted card.
FYI, the Sandisk warranty is applicable for the original card: replaced in 5 days
I got some problems too with corruped files on my SDcard and had to format it. I'm thinking that from now i'll only mount my card to pc in recoverymode... maybe that is safe to do?

[Q] Memory Storage issues and SD card Install

Hi
My phone recently received the O2 Froyo update and i have been enjoying it thoroughly. i have installed countless apps on it and as expected i started facing storage issues. I was surprised because i thought now all apps would be installed on SD card. Went in to Manage Apps section and all apps were installed on device RAM taking up any where between 10Kb to 8 Mb per each App.
Also found the transfer to SD card option. Decided to shift all apps to SDCard through this option. This did not solve my problem and its still showing the "phone storage is low alert".
What i noticed was an app that was taking up 8+mb on phone memory before transfer to SD card, only showed 200-300Kb size on SD card... Does this mean that the app is still on phone memory? should i wipe phone/SD card and install everything manually via PC?
Please help, i would like to hold on to the apps that i have on the phone.
Thanks.

And you won't gain much more with that than with, for example, ModInstalllocation. I read that one guy reported that with app2sd+ only about 140 MB (of installed apps) went to sd card, while internal memory had been decreased by 120 MB. That's comparable with my results using stock Froyo a2sd + ModInstallLocation.
try deleting app's cache, click each app and delete the cache and then reboot phone.
You will only gain the space reclaimed by moving the dalvik cache to the ext partition.

So it will not help if i wipe/format and fresh install Apps from the PC? When i googled this some of the results showed i should be installing from PC for proper installation over SD card.
i havent found a solution yet
So any solution to storage issues? Such a shame to have a half empty 16Gb mSD Card installed and be running out of app space...
only solution Ive found is to buy a newer device with more storage space lol. Shame as I really like the Desire.
What will happen if memory gets low, will the phone slow down?

[Q] best way to change your SD card ?

Hi guys,
I have a 32g class 10 sd card I bought to use instead of my 16gb class 2 but I have been facing quite some issues in the last couple of weeks
I took the 32g, put it in my win7 PC, formatted it to FAT32, safely removed it and now the arc doesnt recognize it... I just wanted to format it via the settings-> storage -> erase card in order to make sure everything is all peaches and cream before loading 20+gig of music in it.
...
All I want to do is finally transfer all my music (24ish gig) to the new 32g , and back up all my apps and stuff via Titanium Back Up pro.
Simply said, I want to have my 16g card data in my 32g one , with all my beat
Please could someone share some tips or links, I'll do homeworks and have been, but I have been facing so many complications since the last few weeks
Thanks in advance
Does your phone recognize another card properly?
Did you apply a volume name when formatting the 32GB card?
Did you try the 32GB card in the phone before formatting it?
I've done pretty much the same as you with a 32GB card (Kingston Class 4) and had no problem.
Are you sure the 32GB card is good and not a counterfeit?
Try formatting it again to with FAT32, default parameters, short or no volume name. Try copying your files to the card on the PC to see if it actual works.

Thanks I did put a volume name. That might explain it.
Yes the card already worked ( plenty of times ). I have been trying numerous time to transfert the music ( takes forever to transfer 20gig to an SD card , even class 10... ), and had mixed results that always ended up failing ( most of the times because of me... like forgeting to safely remove the sd card from my laptop made the card unrecognizable by the phone afterward...of course I just finished to tranfers the 20gig and was too happy to safely remove it... )
I will try that right now. thanks again
*EDIT*
Bah still same problem I must be doing stupid... SD card is not recognized by the phone. In the settings menu ( storage ) I cannot mount or unmount it and thus format it via the phone itself
That even after reformating it to default FAT32 partition with no volume name using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home
So number 1 priority is getting the SD card to be recognized again by the phone
**EDIT2**
When browsing the card with astro it says problem creating external cache , with root explorer it only says directory is empty. Still can't do anything in the settings menu

Ya I'd love to get to this point ( which I got in the past hehe ) but at the moment it's still not even recognizing the sd card anymore
still formating btw....
How did you recover your issue?
I think I have a similar SD card problem. But, I encountered it after I did factory reset with SD card erase option selected. I didn't do anything after all. When I connect to PC, on the phone upper bar, there is no notification regarding USB. The middle button seems not working either.
Try formatting the card with this Panasonic SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card formatter.
That's strange why not just do a quick format in Win7 or WinXP, to FAT32? I use a 32GB as well and Arc has no issue with it. Coming from the 8GB, here's what I did.
1. Take off the 8GB from the Arc and placed in a USB reader.
2. Copy off all the files to your PC. I used WinRAR to accomplish this, just archive everything and STORE it (no need to compress so operation is faster). Or you can just use drag and drop plain copying its all the same.
3. Analyze the copied files and remove all unneeded bloats (ie. old movies u don't intend to watch anymore, clear out useless temp files, etc)
4. Copy back the files on your new FAT32 formatted card using the USB reader, then put in your Arc.
If you notice, the entire data migration is done via card reader/USB. Using the Arc as such will slowdown your progress and introduces unnecessary delays.
You can also use usb tool, it basicaly creates a back up image and can be restored to the new sd

[Q] 2 Primary partitions for link2SD card? MiniTool not working!

MiniTool partition wizard is not working on that, every time I try to make 2 partitions setting them primary, MiniTool automatically changes the 2nd one to logical, after applying the changes. Plus, now every time I connect my SD card it shows the same old partitions, but in my phone it is only one partition (I erased the card through my Wildfire S utility after not working 2 primary partition thing).
I connected it with phone, and memory card reader, same result. Plus when I connect it to computer by card reader/phone and try to format it, it says it is write protected.............
I want to make to partitions on one SD card for link2SD app of android. What to do?????

I broked the lock slide but result was same.................Anyway I found another way to do it,,,,,,,Clockworkmod.
But now new problem is, one app google map, it is converted to user app and then linked to SD card, but the phone is still showing that it is taking up 22 mb space in the internal memory...........(((((
Internal memory - linked apps: Google Currents, Google Maps
I find (using the wonderful little app DiskUsage) that some linked apps still use the internal memory for data that they cache.
Google Currents was the worst offender (a varying difference of approximately 50 megs in the internal storage when I install/uninstall), so I have uninstalled it, but have it backed up. This is on the off-chance that its data storage, is in the future, given the option to choose the SD card instead.
Maybe I shouldn't be linking all the files (exclude the cache linking option for these apps in Link2sd?) of these apps. Any further advice on that would be great! I tried hard to find the answer elsewhere. I'll experiment in the meantime, as I do like Currents!
I would tolerate the Maps usage as for me it can be crucial information needed in low data coverage areas ...
SE Arc S
Rooted, Locked Bootloader
Xperia Ultimate HD2 with Link2sd (ext2)
I have the same problem and solved !!!!!!
Like you,I was so irritated in that situation,
I am replying this post for everyone because i know you are reading this post with huge headache.so the solution is simple as i tried and worked for me
The problem we facing is,we lost the fat32 supporting file,we need to fix into it,so for this i was tried putting the memory card in other mobiles and tried it,in the last attempt putting in nokia mp3 phone and i did format.
Finally it fixed me the problem much more than tried formatting in android mobiles
So i recommend you to format with any java keypad mobiles which has the compatibility to run memory cards. if you have,Because it is working on basic platform.it will insert the basic necessity of sd card such as fat32etc...,in your card.If its not working try formatting with many mobiles as you can.Definitely it will work.:good:
can anybody solve this problem? does minitool partition wizard be helpful? I met the same problem now, and i dont know how to do because now there is not much person using Android.
