I BELIEVE this happened when people started installing the latest OTA. You have to use a different root method or RUU to get it to work...
Maybe this will help

Just go to the link / thread that Dredge posted for simple root. All you have to do is click and follow the instructions. Don't worry about about what files you have or don't have now. Even better delete the junk you previously loaded when trying to root. Simple root will get you Root access, unlock nand and flash the proper PC36IMG. I did it weeks ago before there was a version for gaining root post OTA. If you really really need help you can watch the steps on YouTube. Simpleroot method draws on methods used by others and makes it as automatic and hands off as possible.

I was in the same exact boat you were in, but have finally rooted it and have a custom rom and it is great.
Use simple root (it works) and follow the video steps as well, its like 20 minutes long, but it lets you know whats going on with your phone.
However I don't think you have achieved fool root status yet, because you need to NAND unlock ( i think that means full user permission)
You need to follow the steps on this page, and then you will be set to flash custom roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
What the "simple root" basically does is revert your phone back to 1.17.651.1 which makes the full nand unlock possible, then follow the steps on the link above after you have rooted with simple root, and you are good to go.
It is a really easy process, thanks to these guys and this website.
I have had trouble with this before but finally got it done, so if you need help message me or just post it up on here.

I used simple root to, and when I went into recovery it gave me an error message saying
E: cannot access cache or something like that, So if it works, and you can flash custom roms you are fine, if not use what I posted.

You are a life saver!!!!! I've been having an issue with with the PC36IMG.zip file too and have been searching about 4 different sites for an answer. Thank you for this!!
No problem, I know how frustrating it is, I tried every method but finally got lucky and found that website.
thank you, im about to try now, i will let you know how it turns out.
I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004

Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.
Im sorry if this is else where. Been looking through different fourms and been getting different info. I am familer w/ Rooting..I rooted my hero on my mac. Im not looking to root just want to restore my phone. Can someone please help me?
Try to download and install an official RUU then. Pick the build version that matched the build of your phone before you tried rooting....assuming it might be 3.30.651.3?? since your HBOOT is 2.02.
Supersonic Shipped ROMs
EDIT: You followed the steps in post 1 of that root method thread right? I didn't see it mention anything about continuing if you encountered errors?? But if you said you wiped the phone and the ROM didn't load properly, then you prob don't have a ROM installed and encountered errors during root...you might also not be NAND unlocked. So if you can run the RUU, it should put you back to stock.
i have tried the ruu and it keeps saying my bat is less then %30 when its not.

Hi - first of all, to make it clear, I'm kind of noob.
So .. I got my HTC Desire (GSM) with Leedroid ROM atm. I want to change to Cyangenmod, but I'm a little confused now.
I have tried to get help at the wiki, but I'm not completely sure what to do.
I've followed step 1's advice "Before you do anything - make a backup", of course, and this should be fine.
However, I am not sure about step 2: "Gaining S-OFF & Installing a Custom Recovery Image". My phone is rooted with unrevoked, like half a year ago. I don't know anything about S-OFF and custom recovery image. I've tried to search Google, but it didn't really help.
I dunno if I have to just follow step 2 anyways, even though my phone is rooted, or I just have to proceed to step 3?
I actually tried to follow step 3 "Method via ROM Manager", but it didn't help at all. ROM Manager downloaded Cyangenmod 7.1 and installed it (well, it looked that way), but then I ended up at a black screen with green letters. I just pressed "press to reboot" since I thought the Cyangenmod was installed on my phone, but nothing have happened. Same Leedroid ROM when the phone rebooted.
I hope you're able to help me. Please tell me if you need more info from somewhere!
Some info from recovery mode:

So I'll just have to:
1: flash the CM7 ROM you linked to, from recovery mode (Volume down + power off/on button)
2: download and flash the new Radio afterwards
Right?
@Terepin:
Your "Thanks Meter" is not going to rise from that useless comment!
Full wipe before the flash.
Don't worry too much about the radio. If the phone works well after CM7 is installed, then just leave as it is.

I have hw 003 hboot 2.10. I can enter hboot but not recovery. during normal boot phone just shows evo boot screen and boot loops. same thing when I try to enter recovery. I was s-off but after trying some methods in other brick threads I ended up with s-on.
I was using miui 2.2.3 when I turned it rebooted into recovery to make a nand and that is when the loops started. I have tried several ruu's with no luck on getting it to boot. was going to try the lastest ruu but not sure if I should.
I am flashed for cricket so there is not the option of bricking and returning to sprint for a replacement.
Edit: was not using twrp. Ar 2.3 was my recovery. As stated earlier I tried several ruu's in pc36img.zip.
If you can get to hboot you are not bricked. Have you tried using a pc36img of a stock rom in the hboot? This should boot you to a stock rom, thus allowing you to re-root and get your recovery back.

No i had been running miui for a few days and was getting prepared for the next update by doing a nand. I rebooted to recovery with the reboot option in the rom. Then bang boot loop city here i am. You weren't using twrp2.0 were u? If you were more than likely SOL that's one of the main reasons twrp for the evo is no longer supported even tho it works great on other devices like the kindle fire and 3vo I use it on the KF which I have running cm9 which I just got running on the evo as well now I gotta get my kernel fixed for this thing, have you tried reflashing your recovery? Or using adb to push a boot.img

You guys flatter me .
I don't have any experience with MIUI, though. It's the one ROM I've never tried, but if it's an AOSP ROM, then the bootloop of death is always a possibility.
We haven't had any success rescuing anyone in that scenario, unfortunately. Flashing the ENG HBOOT will allow you to run fastboot commands, though, so that's probably the first step if you want to flash stuff through fastboot.
If you can't get adb working, then there probably isn't much hope. Since you ended up S-ON, and now without a custom recovery, I don't think there's much you can do. Perhaps others with a similar issue can chime in, but as far as I know, there's no current solution. The only way I'd know for sure is having the phone in my hands personally, but I doubt that's a possibility. I haven't personally experienced this bootloop thing, but it sounds scary .

Ok so I have unlocked the bootloader from the htcdevelopers site and i can now use fastboot commands and have tried flashing the recovery. I see it load and write to the phone only thing is that it makes no difference. I still just get the boot loop.
Hate to say it, my friend, but I think it's the end of the road for that phone

maybe but i will keep trying till the phone catches fire in my hands. I dont know the meaning of "quit". I read last night in a xda thread about a possible fix by this guy and some people said it would just brick the phone and others say it works. only thing is i have been unable to find that thread again. it had a link to some evo.docx file.

I assume you're referring to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480630
Have fun trying! Many have tried, and I think only 1 ever succeeded.
thanks captain.
capn, thanks for the link! I've had that README_EVO.docx file on my SD for god-knows-how-long and have always wondered where in the hell I got it lol (and 'why').
@jlmancuso
Good luck, but condolences as well. My $ says, if Cap'n can't fix it, it likely can't be fixed (on Evo). Seems that guy has explored every RUU, Hboot, recovery, NV, Radio, kernel etc. He could probably BUILD an Evo, HW and SW lol.

I think someone else was able to fix this problem . . . there's a thread around here somewhere. I'll try and find it.
EDIT: This is the thread - you'll probably want to read the whole thing, and if you have issues, maybe you can PM the guy that got it working.
The potential problem I see for you is that you're S-ON and bootloader is locked. You're probably going to have to unlock your device with HTCDev.com before you can make any headway. How were you able to write NV items to the phone? Don't you have to be S-OFF to do that?

Yup. I updated my post above with the thread, but that guy was S-OFF, so it was actually possible. Not much you can do with S-ON and locked bootloader.
