Touchwiz30launcher.apk from Sidekick 4G - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not an expert by any means, but I have aquired the launcher from the Sidekick 4G. It is labeled "TouchWiz30Launcher.apk", same as ours. Now, I can't install it. Not rooted. It tries to replace our stock twlauncher. I assume the reason i can't install it is cause it needs the framework from the sidekick 4g. Lemme know how it works. I tried it once and it couldnt parse package, then i redownloaded it, and it worked fine(except it didnt install of course lol)

Have you tried renaming it? Worth a shot, amirite?
Probably wouldn't work though.
If you were rooted though, you could probably just rename the app and push it to the system/app section via Root Explorer.
If it's that easy, I'd love to see how everything goes for others.

I dont plan on rooting my epic anytime soon(never have). So, in your opinion is sprint iD worth installing? Should i use it or ignore it?

your talking to a guy who says "no way not now or ever will i root my phone".
that means no custom roms, no themes, no taskbar mods, no nothing.
with out a custom rom, this phone barely even runs live wallpapers.
i think sprint id will be a thrill for him...
2 yes, 2 no. I should add, that it runs just fine on stock rom. I've been on xda long enough to learn tricks to keep it nice. I don't even use live wallpapers, except to make my iphone friends jealous. Anyways, thanks for the input.

Sent From My Evo Killer!
For anyone running a modded ROM, Sprint ID is extra trash you don't need as you can get the same thing, and far better done, with Themes and such.
For a stock build, it is not that bad, as long as you pick the clean ID
The other options are just bloatware... rofl...
The only people I have found that like it on sports fanatics and for the ESPN theme. Sprint ID is no more than a stock theme changer which is bloated with running services. For those that want Sprint supported themes...use it. I won't because I can handle my own wallpapers and ringtones and which apps I dl and use.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
After using it, i have decided the only use i might possibly have for it, is to switch between Launcher2 and Touchwiz. Its not really that interesting at all.

Is it possible to boot something like Ubuntu?

Can't you just take any old version ubuntu arm edition build, put
an android kernel in and boot it? Drivers are built into the kernel right? Other than there being no way to receive calls and texts unless, it don't see why it wouldn't work. You could probably make programs that allow you to send and receive calls.

Google this topic. Also I think there is an app in the market that will help.

The devs are working on it. They are under no obligation to develop for us and expect nothing in return. So either do something about it or shut up.
They're working hard for us so that the epic can live up to its name.

Our recovery is different, and doesn't have those fastboot options. I though only htc phones had those.

Yes i believe only HTC does that feature but.
IMHO, its not worth it because they don't properly shut off and start to lose battery life. My mother's EVO will say its been running for 118 Hrs but yet she only has the stock battery and it drains crazy even with Juice Defender. And when you shut it off it takes only 1 second and usually anywhere from 2 to 8 seconds to boot.
Ill take Cm7 and have my Boot-ani disabled so it boots fast enough.

You can kexec the boot.img, but odds of it booting are very, very slim.

The real trouble is the X/Wayland driver or the lack there of so chroot jail is the simplest way unless you want to try and write the userland driver

Hence why i said its different pretty much and idc for fast-boot seeing how it screws up their phones, hence again why i said ill take my CM7 and have the boot-ani disabled so its can boot fast enough for me.
We can do whatever fastboot can do with kexec...I believe your talking about htc's sense "fastboot" which has nothing to do with fastboot in the google android sdk...

There is an answer to this in the UnNamed thread, have you tried it?
I just wish I got the notification...I've been waiting for it on my stock Epic 4G Touch...wish I could just push the update instead of waiting for Sprint to push it. Used to work like that on my HTC device...but Samsung phones do it other ways.

Why are you in such a hurry? It's not like the update makes our phones able to print money or anything like that. It'll come, and when it does you will wonder why you made such a big deal about it.

It worked pretty well for me. Not pinpoint, but close enough to actually use.

Wrong section. Your instructing people to flash an Epic Touch tar on the OG Epic. People who don't read before doing (which are common here) are going to brick their phones. Plus as far as I know I haven't heard many complaining about gps not working on cm9 for "our" device.

Edit: I see Z already covered this.
Tried it and didn't work at all.
The way it worked for me was on a EL29 Rom...you can be on any 29...if I remember right from what I read on a different thread...When I was on fb21...no GPS...Went into Recovery from there ...restored one of my old EL29 Roms...went outside got a lock on GPS...From there went back to restore...restored ICS fb21...when it booted up ...went back to GPS and got a lock instantly...So it worked for me with that method...
