[Q] Flashing radios in Clockwork 3.0.0.5? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm trying to flash some new radios on my Evo. And when I try to just do it by pressing "install a .zip from the SD card" it doesn't seem to work. Is this a known issue with Clockword 3.0.0.5 at all?

Yes, the updater-script tells the update-binary to basically package the zip within the zip (recursion!) to be flashed by the hboot, then reboot into hboot and have it automatically flash the new zip.
Unfortunately... ClockworkMod 3 doesn't play well with this. In the meantime, just flash Amon_RA 2.3 and flash the zip manually. I added warnings yesterday in ROM Manager about this. I'm working with gu1dry to try and find a way to get the update-binary to flash the radio(s) directly from within the recovery.

Thanks a lot, I'll be sure to do that.

[Q] Revert to ClockworkMod 2.5.0.5

I've been having trouble with ROM installs and Nandroid backup / restores since I used ROM Manager to update recovery from ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5 to v2.5.1.2.
I would like to revert back to v2.5.0.5. I have the recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.5-inc.img and recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.5-inc.zip. If I run the .zip file from the 2.5.1.2 recovery, it temporarily shows "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5" as the running recovery, but slips back to 2.5.1.2 upon reboot.
At this point my ROM / backups aren't booting. I can get to the adb shell while in v2.5.1.2 recovery. Is there a way to flash back to ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5 from adb shell?
Thanks,
Dan
I renamed recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.5-inc.zip to update.zip and put it on the root of my SD card. I rebooted into hboot and it ran the update.zip, then booted into ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5. Unfortunately when I rebooted into recovery again, it was back to v2.5.1.2.
Someone has to have done this before... At this point my phone is dead to me, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm anxious to hear them.
Place this PB31IMG.zip on the root of your sd card and install through HBOOT.
Being an older version, it may or may not work, but is worth a shot.
"No image or wrong image" when trying to boot that from HBOOT. It won't install it.

Make sure your sd card is formatted to FAT32 rather than FAT and that your computer didn't inadvertently rename the file to PB31IMG.zip.zip or pb31img.zip.
Thanks for the quick response. The file is named PB31IMG.zip (capitalized properly, no extra .zip extension). The SD card is FAT32. I was able to flash a update.zip this morning using the same setup. Would it be advisable to rename the PB31IMG.zip to update.zip just to get it to flash?
What is this PB31IMG.zip? Is it back to the stock RUU or is it the ClockworkMod 2.5.0.5 Recovery?
It's CWM, downloaded straight from Koush's site and inserted into a zip by me.
Another alternative, if you are able to do so, is to use Unrevoked to install the recovery image.
I thought of the same thing this morning. I'll have to try to get a ROM to boot to use Unrevoked, correct?
I tried running Unrevoked while my phone was in recovery, but the Unrevoked 3.2 tool didn't like that too much.
My problem is that after installing a new ROM or restoring a Nandroid backup, the white HTC Incredible splash screen appears indefinitely. It doesn't seem to hand off into the ROM properly. I have gotten a ROM to boot all the way to the desktop before but it bootloops shortly thereafter.
I guess my path forward at this point is to try to get a ROM to boot to the homescreen, then run Unrevoked. Can I run Unrevoked on an already rooted ROM?
unrEVOked tool reports that it should not be run on any device that is not in perfect working order or it risks permanent damage.
PLEASE!!! Anyone that knows how I can flash back to a prior version of recovery please help.
Maybe I'm doing something else wrong... The only ROM I can successfully flash is Incredibly Re-engineered. Unfortunately this ROM has a bootloop issue after some time (known issue, see the development thread and lots of people have the same problem). To install a different ROM, I'm downloading via ROM Manager (SkyRaider or Virtuous for instance), clearing data and cache in recovery (with system and data mounted), running ROM .zip selected from SD card. After the ROM successfully installs and I choose to reboot, my phone sits on the white HTC Incredible splash screen indefinitely. Is there something else I'm missing to flash from Incredibly Re-engineered to another ROM?
Beware of ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2 on your Incredible!

Well, I've found some success. I couldn't figure out how to install an old version of CWM Recovery outright, but ROM Manager was able to successfully install the "alternate" recovery RA_GNM. I used this recovery to flash SkyRaider 3.5. Luckily, SkyRaider 3.5 comes with ROM Manager v2.5.0.7, which thinks ClockworkMod 2.5.0.5 is the most recent recovery. So I was then able to flash back to CWM 2.5.0.5 using ROM Manager before it realized that 2.5.1.2 was the most recent version.
To summarize, I think my phone is back to normal.
PLEASE tread lightly when upgrading your Incredible to 2.5.1.2!

Clockwork Mod

I am trying to update my clockwork mod through recovery, flash .zip, locate the updated zip and flash. It all seems ok with the version but when I boot in the phone and back in recovery it comes the old one. How can I solve this ? Thanks.

if you have s-off you can just flash the recovery image file from fastboot
Use unrevoked to flash it.
You're using fake-flash to run the latest one (or the crap ROM Manager) - as said either run unrEVOked again or, if S-OFF, flash it manually

Frustrated!

Alright I have a problem. I bought a used G2 which had already been rooted. I installed CM7 on it and it worked fine except for wi-fi (little did I know the awful path this was about to send me down). I thought this might be because I was using Recovery 2.5, so I switched to recovery 3.0 and flashed CM7 again, same problem. I found out you have to reboot the phone after your first boot to get wifi working a lot of time so that was my fault, I should have researched that more thoroughly from the beginning and I would have avoided this whole ordeal. Anyway after this I wanted to downgrade to Recovery 2.5 again because there are a lot of zips that can't be installed through recovery with 3.0. So I tried to do that and couldn't, I looked around and found that was probably because I didn't have eng s-off which I didn't, I had s-off but not engineering.
So I tried getting that working, this took forever because I couldn't figure out if I was supposed to use the OTA or preOTA.ko file. I discovered my phone was post OTA so I tried using that file and didn't receive the correct error message (Function not implemented), but instead some other error. After researching this and trying to find out why that could be or what exactly the OTA part of it does without a definitive answer I decided to go ahead and run the terminal command for eng s-off anyway feeling relatively safe. This succeeded and I was happy that I'd finally figured everything out! Wrong. I had eng s-off. Also I was able to downgrade the recovery again through terminal, however after doing this and trying to boot into recovery it would just stay at the white HTC symbol. Fine, maybe I can't downgrade to 2.5 after installing CM7. So I upgraded Recovery back to 3.0 and used it to install CM6.1.
After doing this I went into ROM manager and dropped myself back down to recovery 2.5.1.3. Now whenever I try to reboot into recovery I immediately get taken to fastboot. I've tried searching for any others having problems like this without success and I'm extremely frustrated. I tried using different versions of recovery 2.0, I tried updating to recovery 3.0 all without any success, still just boots into fastboot if I try to get into recovery. Please tell me someone knows what my issue could be and how I can fix it, meanwhile I'll continue trying to work it out and let you know if I do. Thankyou.
EDIT: It appears for whatever reason rom manager may actually not be flashing a recovery, if someone could post the 2.5.1.3 recovery.img that would be wonderful
I dont know if you have Andriod SDK set up and if you know how to use Fastboot, but since you have an ENG. Hboot you can use fastboot to flash a new recovery image onto your phone, you can download the CWM Recovery 3.0.0.5 .Img from HERE. Place the new recovery image into the same folder your Fastboot.exe file is and run this command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery.img>
There is also a way to flash a new recovery using flash_image method from you phone, so you can download a new recovery from the link above and use this method to flash it.
2.5.1.3 recovery is obsolete, the new 3.0.0.5 recovery supports all roms 2.2. and 2.3.

Thanks, yes I know how to use fastboot, and I did install the 3.0.0.5 recovery earlier, the problem with recovery 3 is that a lot of older zips don't support it and I'd really like that functionality. Any idea on where I might be able to find the older recovery? Thanks in advance
I have a copy of the 2.5.1.3 recovery, I put it in my dropbox for you:

Heres a MD5 checksum for it:

Update for anyone else frustrated by this, I found a tool that will attempt to update your zip to the new edify format. I've tried it on a couple zips so far and it worked both times, they just added support for the G2. Here's the link

[Q] ROM Manager boots into CWM 3

Hello guys,
I rooted my WF with AlpharevX, I flashed then CM7 nightly build and yesterday CM7.1 RC1. Afterwards I realised that my GPS doesn't work. I wanted to reflash my radio, I have CMW 3xx, so it is not possible to flash it from recovery. I wanted to boot to recovery directly from ROM Manager, where I have 2.5.0.7, but when it reboots I receive only boot image, when I hit the power button I land in Recovery menu but it says, that it is 3xx version. I tried to reflash radio from there but of course I receive error message.
Have you any ideas, why it is like that?
I think, I could try to convert radio with amend2edify and then try to flash it from recovery, have someone tried this?
Reinstall CWM 2.x from ROM Manager. Someone tried to convert the radio file using Amend2Edify, and it didn't work.
Will help in booting to 2.x recovery.
Have u flashed 2.5.0.7 recovery from rom manager. If yes, it will be present in sdcard /clockworkmod/ downloads folder.
First boot into 3.x recovery then install zip from sdcard. Then choose zip from sdcard and selected the path and file. Then it gives 2.x recovery on the fly. And remember radio flashing is sensitive.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
thx for answers
2.5.0.7 is present in sd/clockworkmod/downloads, so I try to flash it from recovery and then reflash radio. I know it is sensitive, but it seems that I don't have any other choice. I will reflash the same version that I have, so it shouldn't be harmful. then I will go back to newer CWM Version
done, GPS works

Android market missing after root???

Hi,
I rooted my MyTouch 3G slide with some weird method where I made a gold card and used one-click-root to root it.
Everything went smoothly and I deleted the ESPRIMG from the SD Card and went into recovery mode and flashed the cyanogenmod7 rom but there is no google apps like the market, etc.
I don't even have an option to flash google apps.
The root I did has an s-on..is that why?
Thanks
you also have to flash the latest gapp from CyanogenMod. check here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version scroll to the bottom and download the gapp for CyanogenMod 7. Flash it after you flashed your rom.
sorry for late reply. I don't have an option to flash that. I have the stock recovery area.
You have to download clockwork recovery in .zip form, rename it update.zip, and flash that from the stock recovery, and then you will be able to flash it. With s-on, it clears custom recoveries on reboot, so you have to keep the clockworkmod update.zip file on your sd card root and flash that from the stock recovery before you can flash anything else. Or you can download the alpharev patch and get s-off, but some people find it not to be worth it. It opens up nice options for custom MTD partitions and permanent recoveries though.
