[Q] How to tell if PRL is up to date? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So what I did was the Cyanogen GPS fix by flashing back to a Sense rom, updating the GPS thing and then also updating my PRL list while I was there, I then flashed back to the backup of Cyanogen I took right before I did all of this.
A week later I ended up breaking stuff by messing around with changing kernels. I flashed back to the backup I took that I used up there in the first bit, the one I used after I fixed the GPS and updated the PRL. The difference this time is that I flashed back to my backup from recovery instead of the gui based rom manager.
Should everything still be in order or do I need to go back into Sense and do it all over again?

Everything should be good to go. Its like if you flashed a backup, you'd still be on the same radio you were on before. If you want to update, since there was one the other day, you can feel free to update, unless you did, then as I said, you're good to go.

Is the best (and only?) way to update the PRL to backup my current state in Cyan, restore back to my original root backup on the stock sense, then restore my backup from now?
I guess this means the PRL data is stored somewhere besides what gets overwritten during a backup and restore?

That's is correct on both notes.
You can also flash the PRL....someone around here makes it a flashable zip, but I've never used it, so that'd be on your own risk. Doing it the normal way takes all but 5 minutes, so to me its not that much a hassle.

Question about Nandroid backup..

I'm new to Rooting and I was wondering if I flashed lets say to a new rom weather it is 2.2 or 2.1 and I don't like it or something dosen't work. Can I just flash the most current nandroid backup to return or do I have to flash the old rom that I was using then the nandroid backup on top of that ??
Using Rooted Evo with OMJ update 147.651.1
You sure can as long as the new ROM you flash is also a rooted ROM.
So basically I can jump from rom to rom to see what I like and just flash my backup to return to the original.... Cool.thanks

Just returned to a nand backup last night. First time ever and worked fine...(I did a titanium backup first as had messages and app changes.)
How perfect, a simple search answered my exactl question.
I can run three roms and as long asI refresh my nandroids before flipping to another to restore I will miss very little. Only issue I can think of is let's say I run stock rooted for a week, and flip to a nandroid of CM6 for a week, then back to stock rooted...I would not have text messages from that time. I can fix that with TiBackup.
Am I missing anything? And, thanks to the people making me do all this stuff to my phone

Nope you havent missed anything Thats what i do all the time I believe for a certain period of time something else backs up texts as well because i often get all my texts back after a few minutes even those after the nandroid.
I've seen people having issues when using Titanium to restore apps and data from a 2.1 backup to 2.2 rom and vice versa. I think if you're just cycling between 2.2 roms, you should be ok though.
All I needed to know, thanks!
I'll only rotate 2.2 roms, no need to look back, but I appreciate that note also.

I use MyBackup to backup APKS+DATA when jumping from 2.1 to 2.2 and vice versa ROMS without issue. Love it, love it.

I have been cycling between the 2 a LOT here is what i have found works. when you select to restore all apps/data look through the list and uncheck all the 2.1 system apps (ie checkin_update 2.1, google_search_update 2.1) once you do this you can restore everything else no problem. I have used ths method at least 10 times with no issues back and forth. If you backed up on 2.2 do the same thing just uncheck the 2.2 version of this information.
Can someone clarify the difference between backing up via:
#1 Nandroid
#2 Titanium Backup
What exactly is or isn't backed up? I'm assuming Nandroid misses certain things otherwise no one would use TB?

titanium backup is just for apps
nandroid restore is like restoring an image of your hard drive to your pc. it not only restores the apps, but the entire ROM (barring radio and wimax radio).
i.e., you have a ROM going. you use titanium backup to backup your apps. then, do a nandroid backup and flash an entire new ROM. then, you could use titanium backup to put the apps back on. then, you would use nandroid restore to go back to the old ROM, completely. with nandroid, you can flip-flop between ROMs with everything that you had when you backed it up.

Thank you so much that makes it quite clear! I was struggling with that for a while
So Titanium Backup backs things up that are generally able to be carried from one ROM to the next without problem? I noticed that it also does backup system settings (notifications, etc) which is great. These things generally won't corrupt a new ROM file right?
So with 2.2 backing up apps and their data, the main draw of TB would be the backing up of system settings?
How long does it take to complete a nandroid restore? I tried to restore a backup yesterday and it was taking over three hours! I said f' it and pulled out the battery, luckily I was able to boot into recovery and wipe/flash fresh's 2.2 ROM from scratch.

Should only take 5 minutes or so, about as long as it takes to flash a new ROM.

Yes, but it could potentially be problematic to just start restoring things in bulk from a TB backup between different ROMs, even if they are the same base build. Read flipz's rant on the subject.

CM6 vs PRL

I found the new PRL in a zip format is there anyway to install this new PRL update without switching roms and updating it that way? I tried flashing it and that didnt work. It says it cant find the update something or other to finish.
Also noob question. If I creat a nand back up and switch roms play with all sorts of settings and so forth and then deside to restore my nand. Will my restored nand have everything like my contacts and settings and apps already setup without pretty much acting like i just installed a new rom fresh and now I need to redo all my settings and so forth?
Thanks, Thomas
In order to update PRL you need to flash a sense ROM, update the PRL and Profile then flash back to CM.
When you do a nandroid backup it creates an exact backup at the time you make it. Restoring it will restore your phone to the exact state it was in when you made your backup.
not exactly true on nandroid information.
A nandroid does not back up everything. for CM6 users you can make a nand droid flash a new rom flash the prl and restore the Nand and KEEP the new PRL for example same with profile and radios. nand does not back up radios recovery or prl. So while it will be very close it is not truly an exact back up of your phone.
to answer the question though yes you can make a nand droid of a rom play with another rom and flash back anytime you want with out having to reset up all your settings apps etc. Many of us use this method to experiment with different roms (making a nand of each and switching periodically)

Thanks, both of you. lol Yeah I should have played with these things much sooner I have been moding and messing with this phone since almost day one.
For some reasone I could have sworn I flashed the last PRL update on my wifes Hero but obviously thats not the case.

[Q] nandroid restore: does it remove the custom rom and replace it with stock?

Might be a pretty basic qtn but heres the deal.
I took a nandriod backup of dk28 (no root) and then flashed it with nebula rom. Now since the rom was new, all my data/contacts/apps etc are gone obviously.. I am wondering if I did a restore of the nandroid restore, will it restore all that (ie sms/email/contacts/data/apps) or is it used to go back to stock rom only, ie it will remove my custom rom and put back the stock as it was pre flashing nebula?
All I need is a way to keep the custom rom but also restore my sms/email/apps etc.
Thanks!

It will restore everything excatly how it was when you saved it. Including your Texts/Mail etc that were in your inbox at the time you saved. You are basically going back to the exact point where you saved. You can create backups for every rom you have, it is not just for putting your phone back to stock. I always back up stock first, so I can always go back if needed.
Thanks Heelfan71..I understand it puts back everything as it was .. but will I loose my custom rom after that is my question.

If you restore your backup? Yes you will loose your custom rom, unless you make a backup of that too (this is what I do). So you can go back and forth between the 2 if needed. Is that what you were wondering?
basically i want to switch back and forth the roms but keep my data intact.. right now after flashing the new rom.. i have obviously lost all my sms/emails/apps etc.. is there a one click solution which will restore all my data on every new rom i install?
edit: Also , I did take a titanium backup before I flashed the new rom.. but i didnt do a complete (ALL) backup, since I couldnt find a option to backup all. I had to choose each service/app/etc to backup.. so I ended up backing up all the stuff that I understood..but restoring them hasnt restored my sms/email data yet.
Do an advanced restore->restore /data in cwm.
I've had pretty good luck keeping my contacts, apps, and settings this way. Some people see weird force close issues after restoring /data. Check it out and see if it works for you.
thaniks.. i ll give it a try .. i thought about it.. but wasnt sure what exactly it does.
did that .. now that removed the rom manager and spare parts.. not sure what else it did.. but it did bring everything sms/apps/emails back ..
i guess i can install rom manager from the market..
If you only restore data your custom rom will stay. It will only restore your apps and app data. If you are restoring data from a rom on the same file system, you should be fine.
In other words, flashing VIPERrom 4.0.3 EXT4, then backing up, then flashing Bonsai 1.1.4 on RFS, then restoring data is not a good idea.
@ryno502 makes sense....thats what i did and it did restore everything.. Thanks!
now i ve to find some good widgets and lockscreen changes..
Nandroid restore on Custom ROM
I own a Xperia Arc(LT 15i)..rooted,unlocked...
I have Cyanogenmod, stable version running on my phone now...
I had taken a nandroid backup using CWM Auto-installer...
But now I wanna know how can i restore my apps that i had with Stock ROM...i tried a advanced backup on /data alone but then, its not booting up if i do so...
Please help..
Xperia?
Your data is incompatible with CM. You will need to download apps again unless you have a Titanium Backup.

What is the correct method of switching back and forth between roms?

I would like to better understand how to correctly switch back and forth between roms.
Whenever I have put a rom on my phone, I have done a full wipe and reinstalled from scratch (and then made a nandroid backup.)
I don't understand what I need to do once I get my MikFroyo set up the way I want, what steps need to be taken to back it up how I have it and then how to correctly load up a new rom?
And another question, when I go from one ROM to another, if I use a backup of some sort to load up, what areas need to be wiped prior to restoring the backup's?
So what do I need to do in order to switch up between Sense based and AOSP roms depending on the mood and what I am feeling on any given day that will allow the least amount of time but the most accurate and correct method of doing this?
Thank you for the help,
Whiteice

The best bet to keep your settings would be to do a nandroid backup after you set it up the way you want and then rename the backup to say something like Latest Mikfroyo.
Then wipe, flash, and reinstall apps the way you want it either manually or using Titanium Backup or Appbrain. Then repeat for every ROM.
I have a ton of backups made already for almost all the ROMs out there and I switch back and forth for testing purposes.
Try not to keep the nandroid on your SD Card since it takes up a ton of space.
But there are differences between certain ROMs. Some might use A2SD or only work with a certain kernel. So you would have to keep those as well. Rename them to match the correct ROM as well. So MikFroyoKernel.zip for example.
Nandroids won't back up the correct kernel. So you would want to wipe > flash kernel (if needed) > reboot > boot into recovery > wipe > restore nandroid.
That will do it for the most part. But mind you, sometimes the nandroid will fail. Not sure exactly what causes this but you can always restore another backup. Sometimes flashing the original ROM then restoring works as well.

If you do full wipe won't have any problem going between Sense and AOSP. Just don't import your settings cause could mess things up.
Also, I always wipe/format the sd-ext as well. Depending on how you are set-up could have apps from the old rom show up in new after boot.

nope, it dont matter if ur going between aosp or sense, nand will restore everything... but u might wanna read up some more on the latest amon-ra recoveries dat have been released, because whenever i do a nand restore, i get stuck in a boot loop, n its quite annoying...

Only if there is an existing backup to go to. OP really didn't specify whether switching between Sense & AOSP backups or new installs in that last paragraph.

What if I didn't nandroid?

So I rooted awhile back using the long step by step method and unrevoked forever since I have a newer phone that requires that root method. In the process I didn't do a nandroid backup, but did backup my 4g keys, etc. Is the purpose of a nandroid backup just to have something to revert to in case a new rom fails? Would I be fine just doing a nandroid backup of my rooted and flashed phone, or is there a reason I should flash back to a stock rom and do a nandroid that way? Thanks for the help, just want to make sure I don't leave myself stranded one day.

Its just a backup to restore in case of a bad flash. If your current ROM is working, just make one now and tuck it away somewhere safe. You're good to go, no worries.

Ditto. As Long as you have a backup of a working ROM, you should be good to go. Luckily I haven't ever run into a situation where I needed it. Usually if I find something slightly wrong, I just switch ROMs. I need less of an excuse than that, actually.
A backup is very, very, very important!!!
Just recently, for example, my text messages were acting funky and so I decided a reboot might alleviate the issue, perhaps. Upon rebooting, I got stuck in a boot loop. Thankfully, had myself a backup to just restore real quick and get on with my life.
It needn't be of a stock image, just one that has no issues so that you can always go back should something occur. Usually, that's why people perform one immediately, since there are clearly no flash-related issues when you're on stock!
But, it would be fine to go ahead and perform one now. In fact, perform one now. That's an order!
