Just curious to those that use Pandora in their car and forgive me if this is n00b thread but I'm looking for any input.
First off, I have had this phone since launch but have yet to put it under heavy use(lots of email, gps, bluetooth, etc). So I'm a bit cautious about wearing down my baby lol. To the heavy use users, is battery life still the same or are you seeing drastic changes on how long it last?
Second, what set up(modem, kernel, rom, etc) should I use to run Pandora as flawless as possible? I will mostly use it when driving through the city(weekends) so I hope to get better reception there than at home...
Again, sorry for the dumb questions but I would like some input. Cheers!
I listen to music via pandora in the car. the batteru drain is very light. At most, you use 5% in 30 minutes. (At least for me). I always have screen off when I play pandora, though. And I have good signal where I live.

Don't know about your second question, but anytime you use any phone heavily (lots of everything you mentioned) the battery is going to quickly drop. Flashing most ROMs will improve your battery life, but not so drastically that it will stand up to a day of heavy gps/bluetooth/4g/constant email & text etc..
Unfortunately the sad truth is that any smart phone under heavy use will have the battery drained under heavy use. I for one rarely leave my phone off the charger when one is available, be it in my house, work, or in my car. Like water in the desert you never know when your next charge might come. I would suggest investing in a car charger for you trips through the city. Not only will you not have to worry about battery drain while listening to music, but when you arrive at your destination you will have a nice and fully charged phone on what you can impress people with. Car chargers are rather inexpensive if you check on ebay. I got a wall charge, car charger, screen protectors and a tpu case for less then 5 bucks shipped. While the quality might not be as good as the sprint charger(with what seams like a 20 foot cable) it will get you by just fine.
Sorry I wasn't clear enough guys!!!
What I meant by battery drainage was in the LONG HAUL, will recharging it over and over again damage it...as I understand it, most cell phone batteries have 1000 charges life span.
I do have a car charger that I rarely use unless I have to. Will leaving my phone connected to it WHILE using being harmful? I think thats my biggest question here..I have heard that using the phone while charging can spell bad news for your phone.

Honestly I've heard stories of this happening to people, but it has just never happened to me. The batteries on all of my phones have had pretty consistent loss over time so I personally don't think you have anything to worry about.
I haven't noticed any significant loss in battery over time other than what naturally happens to all batteries whether you use them heavily or not. I'm always on my phone, streaming music surfing the Internet, using a car dock to recharge and it seems just fine still after having this phone since day 1 that it came out.
I couldn't tell you the best setup since right now I'm just running stock rooted sorry.

And you can get a new oem battery off amazon/ebay for like $15. I've noticed some batteries lose their charge more then others but to me it always makes more sense to just keep it charged then buy a new battery later if I need to. I'm talking over a year for me before I can tell a battery gets worn out...

I can say from my previous phone that over time if your a heavy user and you find yourself always searching for a charger while your on the go, your battery life will diminish and eventually the battery will swell.
My last phone a Zio from cricket, began with a battery that would last about 7-8 hours with me using it to text, listen to pandora for an hour on my way to work, check Facebook, XDA, etc...
After a while I had to charge my phone more often, eventually the battery could not last any longer than 2 hours 3 if I didn't use pandora.
Sent from The iPhone killer, Epic 4G Touch using XDA premium.
Yeah. All lithium-ion batteries will eventually lose their vitality. It's just the nature of the battery. Constant use will definitely make this happen sooner but not soon enough to be a fear in the back of your mind. I actually need to replace my laptop battery soon because of this but it would happen sooner or later...
I find that after a few days in my phone, that my battery starts to drop faster, so i just swap it out for my spare and drop the spare in the phone. But usually between 2 days i will swap at least once.
The external charger always charges to 100% where the phone a we all know is flaky at best in charging.

the last thing in the world I would worry about is wearing out the phone or battery..
I'd be more concerned about a meteor hitting me, or winning the lottery!
luckily, this isn't an iphone or a razr, so if the battery goes to ****, you can just buy a new one. if I were you, i wouldn't think about it again. pandora away.
One thing I did was if I am going to have it plugged into the charger and using it heavily I bought a cheap knockoff battery that I just throw in for this purpose only. Heat is one of the biggest killers of batteries and if you are using your phone heavily while being plugged in it gets very hot. I figure if I am going to kill a battery it may as well be a cheap knockoff one then the actual OEM one.

I got the Motorola rapid car charger for my entire family. We all use the E4GT. Super cheap, $5 on Amazon (free ship with prime), charges at 950mA so it's every bit as quick as Samsung OEM, and it looks quite snazzy with the blue led window. Definitely top tier quality!

I recommend using a profile locked at 500 or 800 max to get max battery life. Did this on a trip recently, 10 hour drive. Pandora or doubletwist and gps the whole way, no battery drop with screen on and charger plugged in.

I think he's worrying about it too much.
Does anyone know how to achieve this? I would suspect shorting the 3 leads (or a combination) in the battery compartment without the battery inserted and while plugged into a usb AC adapter would do the trick. However, I don't know the exact electrical layout of those leads....
Great for long road trips (gps + dashcam usage) or tethering so as not the wear out the battery prematurely.
Sounds like a bad idea.
Take the battery out and plug the phone in.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
If one can jumper the connections to mimic a full battery...then it should be able to run off a power source such as a wall socket AC adapter or usb car adapter. Of course, the resistance of the battery should be taken into consideration when doing so. I just need the pin outs for those leads....
The battery temperature gets way hot...into the high 40s C when tethering, which is definitely not conducive to prolonged battery life.

Well..as i said before. The two main reasons for this is while Tethering and when using it as a Dash Cam + GPS while driving. The phone gets incredibly hot along with the battery temperature. Eliminating the battery will relieve the extra temperature as well as preserve battery health.

I just took a 9 hour road trip and used sprint hot spot for tethering a handful of devices in the vehicle. What I did was take the back off the phone, let it sit over the windshield vent and had cool air blow into it. It stayed nice and cool. I used an unactivated phone for Google nav using wifi.
Tethering maxes out the processor for a long period of time, that's why it always gets hot.

Thanks! That's a great idea. Oh wow...wifi hotspot eats up the battery like no other, which brings me to my next question.
What USB Car Adapter did you use with it? I've read that typical 1Amp usb car adapters are unable to charge or even maintain battery level when cellphone is running with all radios enabled due to the large amount of power draw. I'm looking at a small and very discreet 2Amp usb car adapter, which should be able to provide enough juice for the phone running with all radios on.
Some considerations I've been looking at:
http://www.amazon.com/Miccus-Charge...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329682002&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/Satechi-ST-24...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329682002&sr=1-17
http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Power...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329681948&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-K3...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329681948&sr=1-10
If you look on the battery you will see which pins are positive and negative but i seriously do not recommend doing that. It would probably work but it would be very risky if those power leads touch "short out" your phone is dead, you never "short out" electrical connections especially on a phone! unless you want to short out your phone (very bad!)
I think the best thing you can do is get an extended battery so you can tether without having to charge at the same time, and that way the battery shouldnt heat up that much, as well as last alot longer. However if your gonna go 9 hours then you should definitely stick it in a A/C vent or something!

I had a power converter and used the outlet charger and USB that came with the phone. Yes the phone did loose power while on the charger, but didn't go dead.
Anything that's 1A 5 watts is the maximum the phone will accept. I wouldn't advise going over 1 amp.
I used the Griffin charger before. I don't think it kicks out the power as advertised. My phones always charged very slowly with that charger.
First let me be clear that I am in no way connected to nor will I benefit from the product. If you are looking for an external battery you may want to check out the POP battery project at kickstarter
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/siminoff/pop-the-intersection-of-charging-and-design.
It is a 26,000 mah charging device with 4 built in retractable ipad/mini usb cables and 2 more standard usb ports. I have pre ordered 2. I think they will probably be the last external batteries I will ever need to get because 1) they have standard usb ports and 2) the battery is so big, that unless we have a serious power outage I can never see my self draining it.
My next move is to put together a solar charging set up so that I could be off grid indefinitely
I've always wondered how effective these really are, looks cool though
I have 2 isound 16000's . I am going to take one to the airport with me to wait on my wife. It will run my flyer all night if need be. I have 9 callpod duo's they are good for one charge on my Evo
Thats a super cool battery backup.
I will keep a eye on this.

Your battery looks interesting but as I check the specs... Your battery is 1700mah. A callpod duo is 3400 mah. The isound is 16,000 mah. The POP is 26,000 mah. If your phone will go two days on your battery it will last the better part of a month on a POP
Sent from my EVO 3D using xda app-developers app
For a little bit better comparison, awhile back I sat with my flyer, with WiFi on ,running Greader from about 9am on a sunday morning, The flyer was connected to the isound 16000. At 10pm that night the isound was mostly dead but the flyer was full. I wasn't straight using the flyer all day but the screen was on and the WiFi was on.
The Pop should yield similar results charging both the flyer and the EVO 3d with one acting as hot spot and the other tethered

Does anyone have a solar S3 case that they like that adds to their mobile experience in any productive way?
There are a few solar cases on the market, this one seems to be the most prominent at the time.
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Newe...e-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-i9300/1135480870.html
Does anyone have this one specifically? Do you like it? Does the phone stay in the case ok? Is it a complete piece of crap?
I like the idea of not being stranded with a dead battery without carrying around extra batteries or a separate solar unit for charging, but not if it takes a week to charge. I was going to get just an extended battery, but then I stumbled on these, which also serve as extended batteries but with the addition of the solar cells.
Thanks!
For that much you might as well get an extended battery case or portable recharging battery station and save some money. With just those two things I could easily go two plus days with moderate usage.

It retails on eBay for about $20-$30 for one unit. I'm thinking you looked at the price for 20 units wholesale on the link above ($288).
And it IS an extended battery case, for about $10 more you get the solar cells, the regular 3200mah (without the solar bits) sells for about $15-20. The question is whether or not it's worthwhile and if it is junk or not.
Does anyone have one?

A solar panel that size would take DAYS to charge a 2500 may battery. I have a camping solar charger that puts out 2 amps and depending on weather conditions takes about 4 to 6 he's to fully charge the stock battery. Its a set of panels that are about 2.5 square feet. That case with the tiny panel is nothing more than a gimmick unfortunately.

Thanks. That's kinda what my BS radar is saying, I just like to hear it from a few other people. I have not been able to find the solar outputs listed on any of these cases.
You're going to get nothing useful out of that solar panel.
Let's run on some optimistic assumptions.
The panel appears to be about 4"x2"
Let's assume it's a really new and highly efficient CdTe thin-film panel. That gives you an efficiency of about 20%.
Now let's assume you're in the Arizona desert, the highest solar zone in the USA and you're collecting all available energy from the sunlight.
Under those assumptions, the panel would put out about 270 milliwatts. It would take about 2 days to charge the battery at that rate. And that's using the most optimistic assumptions available.
Realistically, you might get a third that much power.

Call me crazy but given the inefficient nature of Qi I'd at least want a larger (12000 or more) battery. I've got the anker slim 4500 and it's barely enough for 1 and a half charges (granted I use it while charging), I'd be interested how long this would last while powering the Qi electronics as well as the inefficient charging of the phone.

I wouldn't just say it's pretty good for the price. It's unbelievably low. Your average Qi charger costs $35 for really cheap models while external batteries of 8000 maH cost about $40 each.
However, I did purchase this and I will post again after I try it out and give you guys a review on it, seeing that there is only one amazon review so far.
Bump!
I have received the charger, and right off the bat I want to say something that I was extremely surprised with. Along with the cheap price, apparently the free-shipping was free 2-day shipping as well. I was rather shocked when I discovered it 2 days after I ordered it.
The device is rather portable, it is roughly twice the weight of an N5 and roughly the same dimensions. With a case on my phone ( I use a Spigen Ultra Hybrid), when I put it on it almost conforms perfectly except the charger is about a half inch longer.
The material is very glossy and easy to get fingerprints on, and looks *sort of* cheap, mainly due to the chrome rim binding it. However it feels solid pretty far, except for a power button rattle.
I have not kept track of the exact numbers, but so far this thing has satisfied me pretty well. This is my first Qi charger, so I am not aware on whether or not it's supposed to slightly warm up when charging, but it does. The charge rate is pretty decent, 1% every 2 minutes it seems like. The wired charging speeds obviously depend on whether or not you're using the 1A port or the 2.1A port, but the charging speeds for those are already cataloged so it is unnecessary for me to elaborate on it.
The LEDs are pretty bright but it is very hard to see them unless you're looking directly from above it. The battery does seem like it's 8000maH (before power effiency decreases, so the battery is actually 5600maH effectively).
I give it a 8/10 as a product. A 9/10 as a product considering the price and shipping. 100% Recommended

How is the qi charging? How many times can you charge it using this on battery and how fast does it charge on qi? If you dont mind me askin.
I picked one up and like it very much! It's a tad longer than the Nexus 5 and about the same otherwise in dimensions. It's quite heavy. The charging works well and it's not picky about positioning. Only wish for improvement is that it's a smooth metallic surface all around so it's easy for the phone to slide. I might lay down some non-grip material over it to improve that.
It's a great deal since it's as cheap or cheaper as most qi chargers and as most battery packs but you get both in one.

Sorry for the bad wording previously, but it charges at a rate of about 1% per 2 minutes. I have not the time to conduct from full experiments but it seems that I was able to get about two full phone charges more or less out of it, which is pretty appropriate.
Another note, the LEDs are so weird. They're sort of like mini flash-lights. As I said, you can't really see them unless you're viewing them head on, but last night when I was charging the battery I could use the LED lights to look around my room. This was no problem though as it did not spread, and I simply flipped the battery over .
This seems like the exact same as another one that's been making the rounds, except it's advertised as 10000 mAh. Look up TX-5600 power bank. They sell a few different colors at dx.com, but I bought mine at Amazon (another brand) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FS1NTMW/. I wonder if it's just plain old deceptive advertising, or if they just use the same shell and put another battery in.
I gotta say, I'm very happy with mine though.
i just ordered one..hoping to get it friday.
Question:
If i use it mainly as a QI charger and leave it plugged in most of the time..will it degrade the battery?
i dont have a need to carry the external battery around all the time, i just needed a 2nd QI charger and since this was a 2 in 1 for $30 i bought it.
I see that theres an on/off button. IDK if that only functions as an on/off for the battery pack itself or if it also protects the battery from overcharge when it is switched off and used just as a qi charger.
thanks in advance
I ordered one of these. Looks decent and charges devices quickly using wired mode. However, Qi charging seems inefficient. After charging up the device overnight, it was drained after a single charge of my N5. Seems to only make sense to buy this if you use a wired charging when on the go and use the qi charging when you're plugged into AC. I usually use this device while plugged into AC on my nightstand so it suits my needs. If I'm in a rush to go out and have a phone or tablet that has little charge, I'll bring this device and charge on the road using a cable.
As for the online reviews, they are likely biased. The seller offers a free gift IF you post a "positive product experience". Doesn't seem like a moral practice to me. Anyways, since the product itself works as I described I completed a positive review. Getting the free gift has been like pulling teeth. The vendor/distributor is inflexible and comes up with unwritten statements that state, "our policy is..." long story here. This makes me a bit concerned if my unit needs warranty in the future. Definitely a consideration if you decide to buy one.
Thanks for the bump. Ordered for $30. What a deal.
