[Q] Windows 7 Blue Screens - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Awhile back, before I even considered rooting my phone, I was installing HTC Sync on my Windows 7 machine. The software installed correctly and everything seemed fine. A week or some later, I went to plug my phone back into my computer and after the computer recognized the phone, Windows crashed and blue screened.
I tried to remedy the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the software (HTC Sync), but it didn't help.
Now, I loaded my phone into the bootloader to install the HBOOT driver and everything seemed fine. As soon as I turned my phone back on to run unrevoked, Windows died again.
Has anyone run into this problem?

You downloaded and installed the Unrevoked USB Drivers correct? You don't want HTC Sync installed when running Unrevoked.

Right. I uninstalled HTC Sync awhile back. Yesterday I followed the directions for installing the HBOOT drivers to a "T." My screen looked exactly like the screen shots.
Once I rebooted my phone and plugged it into my computer, everything looked cool and then Windows crashed.
This doesn't have anything to do with selected a preference of what I want the phone to do when I connect it, does it? Right now the selection on the phone is "Charge Only," but should it be something else. Also, USB Debugging is on.

Try disk drive.

Bam. That did it. Windows waited to blue screen until after unrevoked was done.

Cool, so it worked at least then?

What STOP code are you getting for the BSOD's you're getting? BSOD's usually point to something more wrong with the system... Could be a corrupt sector on your HDD or (more than likely) a driver problem (the STOP code could tell me more).
The STOP code is located at the bottom of the BSOD when you receive it, formatted like this: STOP 0x000000## where ## = some alphanumeric combination.

[Q] Help pls....

I have an stock EVO that will not connect to the HTC Sync program no matter what version of Sync I install. The Sync program doesn't see My EVO, nor does the device manager display it as an Andriod Device.
I have installed and tried both 2.0.35 & 2.0.40, neither will see the phone when plugged into computer. I also have PdaNet (purchased version) installed and that program allows me to wire tether on the same pc and same phone. I have also tried this on another pc with the same results. I am baffled.
My reason for this help is simple, I want to ROOT this EVO but with the Sync program not seeing My EVO when wired tethered, well, need I say more?
Anyone out there in Techno World, help pls.....
Thanks in Advance Y'all.

On computer, try uninstalling the HTC Sync program via Programs and Features menu, leaving behind the HTC BMP USB Driver and the HTC Driver Installer on the computer . . .
ok, will give that a shot, brb.
@ SteveGrandRapids,
Ok, did as you suggested and now in my device manager i see:
Disc Drives>HTC-Android Phone USB Device
Will I now be able to have the ROOT program see my phone?
Are you running a sense rom? Sync will only work on sense, not aosp.
YUP, full stock atm.....
Thx Y'all, as you can see, My EVO is now rooted and lovin it. WiFi Tether working perfectly. Unrevoked3 worked flawlessly, sealessly and my hat is off to the Devs for their hard work. I did NOT loose any data nor did I have to reinstall any of my apps. Just follow the instructions and the video. Entire process took about 30 minutes. I recommend you watch the video and do the process along with it. VERY GOOD JOB!

Thx, now that Ima rooted and everything still works just fine including PdaNet, Ima good. I don't use Sync anyway as a Sync program. Everything I need sync'd is done by google or EverNote. I just needed the pc to recognize my EVO so I could root it. Ima rooted, WiFi Tether works perfectly, didn't loose data or need to reinstall any apps. Ima in HIGH COTTON now.
Thanks anyway my friend....

Glad it went well . . have fun . .
Actually, Huston, We Have a Problem.
An hour and 20 minutes after rooting, the EVO went completely dead sitting in its dock. I noticed it wasn't charging but it still had 42% left when I last checked it. Doubtful it could use that much juice in a 30 minute period. Now its completely dead and will not charge or boot. You'd think if something was to happen, it would have happened quickly and not wait. Its electric, its either on or off, no inbetween.
Strange because after I rooted it, I made calls with it, accessed the web and most important to me, wifi tethered my laptop and gtablet to it. It rebooted fine too..and all was working perfectly. I noticed that the root process used some power so I put it into its dock to charge it up and nothing. Tried to plug it directly into a USB2 and still nothing. Everything worked just minutes prior to it going dead.
I haven't a clue whats wrong except once I get home I'll put in a fully charged battery and see if it boots. If it does, next thing is to see if the battery will charge.
Any ideas?
Try the fresh battery and post back with update.

Will do, but that will be about 3 1/2 hours from now. Still at work.....
OK, it was the battery. Was so low it shut down phone. Plugged it into my home charger still in the phone and the charge light came on so I removed it, placed it in my dual charger and installed my spare battery and all is well.
Dohhhhhh!!

[Q] Problem Connecting Phone to PC (Please move to Q/A, Sorry)

I've been looking for the past few hours and now I'm starting to get nervous --- i've read tons of threads with people having something like my problem and I've done everything suggested and still no luck, starting to freak out a bit haha. Hooked my phone up this morning, everything was as normal. Plug it in, USB option comes up, worked perfectly. The only thing I did with my phone was go on a long car ride and charged it using an adapter to a house charger. Im assuming that somehow that screwed it up since it was being converted. This sounds strange to me but its my only idea. I can't connect, the second I plug in my phone it starts to charge (and for some reason the light doesn't come on when it usually does).
Things I've tried =
-Reset phone/computer
-Reflashed latest Calks
-Tried 4 different cables (along with all computers USB ports)
-Reinstalled Samsung drivers
-Reflashed stock
-System restore of computer
--------
Other than completely wiping my phone of everything I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time.
Try booting on recovery and enable USB mount, if you still don't have access to the phone then very likely your USB port is damaged. This will discard any issues with the ROM
Another thing you could try is to get the phone to another computer, the computer should recognize it even without drivers if you enable USB storage mode or at the very least make the unknown device show up on the device manager. If it shows up then you know for sure your computer is the problem, if not, well then it is your phone.

I even went so far as to format my netbook and start fresh, still didn't work --- just got it set back up...
My girlfriend just got home with her computer and it's not recognizing it at all. When I go into settings>Wireless> USB Utilities, it doesn't even recognize that my cable is connected (even though its charging)
I didn't know there was anything like Force USB Mount in recovery so I'm going to do that right after I type this post
This is really frustrating :O haha so I guess if your suggestion doesn't work, whats the easiest way to un-root return to stock so I can stop by the Sprint store tomorrow? I talked to a rep that roots his phones and he said as long as it says Gingerbread 2.3.6 they'll take it back (I guess they don't look at the custom counter)
Any other suggestions? (Thanks fen)
Thanks for the idea but the force mount through CWM didn't work ... Gave me a little hope by popping up on my pc for two seconds but then disappeared. Yeah so looks like my next option is to return to stock and get me a new one?

Odd... so the phone popped on windows and then disconnected immediately? That would indicate that physically the port is fine but logically something is going on... (unless you moved the cable).
Well if that is the case then you could either try to diagnose the issue yourself OR try to get the phone replaced somehow.
Another idea... have your tried download mode?
Im on the same boat delete the drivers from your computer the actual usb drivers not the samsung ones that worked for me the update them again. I have a dv7 hp. It works at times but somethimes it says error connect to a high speed usb

I had this same issue (if I'm reading and understanding you correctly) for the last week and was at my wits end. No matter what I did or changed, I could not get my PC to recognize my phone all of a sudden. The USB connected notification just quit appearing. I installed and uninstalled drivers, installed and uninstalled different Keis versions, tried different cables, different computers..... Finally just as I was about to wipe and Odin the phone, I remembered I had changed the AP/CP setting in ##8878# when I did the PRL change and just maybe I forgot to change it back.......sure enough, that was it. I switched it back, connected phone to PC and bam!...all fixed.

Sorry I was in a hurry when I typed that --- let me clarify.
Honestly I did so much tinkering last night that I don't remember exactly how i got it to do it. But after playing with the mounts in CWM, I eventually started up my phone and the USB logo came up in the Notif bar --- (MTP Inititaed - or whatever that is) but after clicking the icon nothing happened and eventually just went away

Just by playing around with those numbers you gave me I found it to be ##8778# bringing up the USB -AP/CP/ALL menu --- which one is it supposed to be set as?
EDIT*** It was on AP... tried the other two options, resetting phone in between both of them and still no luck --- have an appt to go to the sprint store tomorrow ---
Because I can't get the phone to connect... I don't suppose there is a way to flash unroot is there --- I've already flashed modem kernal and stock rom --- went into ES and deleted Superuser... the only way you can tell that my phone has been messed with is that CWM still pops up when you do the Volume+poweron... any suggestions?
Thanks again for the suggestions everyone I really appreciate them

I am having the same issue. However, my phone is stock. Do you know what was the culprit?
Get insurance on it wait a few weeks, say you lost it and pay the $100 for the replacement. Keep the lost one for parts. Or sell it on ebay for parts. This is if you can't fully get back to stock.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I never did get a confirmation kn exactly what the problem was. As stated above i just deleted super user and flashed a stock everything and just prayed they wouldn't check for cwm which they didn't.
Im assuming my charging port burnt out. I used multiple different cables, including LG HTC stock Samsung and some Verizon one. But i think what finally did it was using the Verizon one in the car with a really old adapter. I don't understand why this would cause a problem but i really believe it did. That Verizon cable even acts weird with this new phone like it says charging but led light randomly turns on and off.
Im confused as to what happens to that old phone if you ever lose it. I lost a phone along time ago when I was drunk, but instead of claiming insurance i was eligible for upgrade. What possibly could have ended up happening with that old phone? Somebody found a paper weight? Or was somebody able to flash it and use it?
I guess the condensed version of my question is what happens to a found phone after device has been reported lost?

Yeah works just fine on the other PC (both running Windows 7 x64) so im guessing driver related?

That's really strange, I mean i just installed the drivers last night to root my device and it all worked fine and i guess it decided to say "buzz off" to me the next day.. I think it's happening on a lot of other phones because I was googling earlier how to fix this problem but didn't really see anything on how to do it
Try reinstalling the phone with naked drivers.

I just got this message as well....and guess what, had just finished installing updates for Windows.
Any solid answer on how to fix this?
I see this when the debugging mode is on, if you turn off debugging the error goes away
I still get the error even after deselecting debugging.
Thing is, it was working perfectly fine with debugging on, until I updated Windows 7.
I think it has to do with someone with one of the security updates or something......really annoying!
I'm having this issue on my Galaxy Note as well. I started getting it once I updated from 4.0.3 ICS to 4.0.4.
I have to connect phone using the USB Mass Storage now. Before my phones SD and phone storage would be detected as soon as I plugged it in via usb.

i've also been having this recently. i'm guessing that a windows 7 update has messed something up with mtp drivers as my phone was working fine across 3 different windows machines and now doesn't work on any of them :\ it has stopped appearing in explorer as a connected device in media or camera mode.

Odin not working

I really don't understand Odin sometimes, it doesn't make any sense at all. At first my stock cable didn't work very well, and everyone said to go get a Blackberry one from Verizon because theirs is a top quality cable (I guess Blackberry did SOMETHING right after all) and that worked for a while.... Every time I get it to work I simply leave the cable on the port it was on so I can go back to it later, thinking that if it worked once, it should work again, right? Nope... Every single time it's a huge hassle and this particular time I have tried every single port on my computer w 2 different USB cables and I still don't get a COM link....
Help please!
Try a different computer or try to reinstall Odin/drivers

Exactly. Uninstall drivers and let Windows find and reinstall them.
Sent from my PantechP4100 using xda premium
I have already done that. When first double-clicking "Samsung_Mobile_USB_Driver_V1.3.800.0.msi" it asks if you would like to uninstall or repair the current drivers. I clicked uninstall, waited for it to finish, then re-installed again and it still didn't work.
You needed to use a file to force driver installation? Do they not install on their own? -- shot in the dark, but try diff. drivers (or the ones that should be installing on their own, specifically)?
Start up Odin, Take out your battery, plug in your phone to your computer without battery in there, put phone in download mode, then put back your battery.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
Ok.... So now I'm really frustrated... Odin has always worked no problem for me. I've had a little trouble sometimes, sure, but now it is just outright refusing to work. I've tried 2 different cables: my stock cable and a blackberry usb cable that fits really tight in the port that seems to work much better, normally.
I can't get a COM connection for the life of me. I tried what omair2005 suggested about taking the battery out, etc and that didn't work. Windows keeps telling me that the "device has malfunctioned" but it has always said that so I really don't think anything of that considering it's worked before.
Anyone have any out of the box thinking on this one? I'm definitely not a noob to flashing nor Odin, this must be some sort of weird glitch, or perhaps something simple that I'm overlooking....

Did you reboot after the uninstall and reboot the phone? Then with both freshly booted let Windows find the drivers. It makes a difference.

Flash a normal custom rom and be done with all the issues, bugs and stuff which don't work..
Flash a Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 Jellybean 4.1.1 custom rom.
The AOKP/AOSP/CM Cyanogen and ported roms are only good if you are either a developer or just like to experiment.
Good Luck!

I only got my laptop, but Windows actually deactivates when i plug my phone in for some stupid reason. Noodling
Wait, it recognises it then disconnects it? That is a windows issue my friend. Sounds like you have a corrupt driver registry. That being said Do Not go digging in the reg to fix.
Plug in your phone to the PC.
Let windows do its thing.
Find the mtp or sgs3 driver in dev mgmt.
(Right click on the "my computer" - select manage. Then device manager.)
In here you should see your device either with an exclamation, question, or nothing. Right click and uninstall. You will want to delete the driver too.
After it is finished d/l the drivers for mtp (I prefer googles drivers) once finished leave the sgs3 plugged in and reboot.
Once back into win the os will ask for drivers. Select let me find the driver - all - and have disk. Point to the d/l drivers and install. If this does not help you might need reg repair which is not an easy task. It is easier to reinstall windows the attempt a registry repair. Let me know how this works for you. I'll keep helping you... Two heads are better than one

I mean on my laptop, Windows 8 deactivates, like I have to re-type in a new product key to fix it. My tower doesn't recognize it at all, nothing in Device Manager, but it charges the phone. I've tried 2 cables so far, gonna borrow another one and try that.
Try that and let me know if it helps. My bet is still one the windows side. Might want to look into reloading your windows if all else fails. You having any issues with other USB devices on this PC? (Printer, thumb drive, external, etc.)
