XDA, you are my only hope, and no I don't mean to sound like someone out of Star Wars, but I mean it, it's either you, or the death of my Desire...
Today I had my phone in my pocket at work. I took it out and noticed it was dead, so naturally I thought the battery had run out, although I was confused as I had fully charged my phone the night before. I got home, put my phone on charge and after two minutes the Orange light still hadn't come on. I removed my battery, then re-inserted it and still nothing.
After 10 or so minutes I started to fiddle around with my Desire a little more. I am running a custom ROM, so I removed the SD Card & the SIM card & the battery. If I plug the charger in with no battery, SIM or SD, I get a Orange & Green light that flashes on and off within the combined time of one second. Inserting the SD, will stop the battery from charging and the handset turning on, however if there is no SD in, and just the battery I am able to get to HBoot, however it won't respond.
I am trying to flash the latest PB99IMG that can be found over at Shipped-Roms. HTC are on schedule to pick the phone up tomorrow however the problem is it has a Custom ROM on it, please XDA I need you help, even if I can't get my phone into fully working order, aslong as I can get it running Genuine HTC Software. Thanks in advance!
Extra Notes:
I found threads suggesting this could be linked to a 'Dead Battery' however they all concerned batteries that were fake/counterfeit, not real ones that died.
so, if you insert the sim, and no sd, it charges
Have you tried a different sd? One formatted to FAT 32?
And if so, can you boot to recovery? (vol -, and hold power key)

I tried an SD Card that works and that I current use with my other phone, Desire HD, the symptoms are the same however I am able to Charge with the SD Card in at the same time, I haven't tried Charging with the SD Card in with the original SD Card that was inserted when the problem first occured. At the moment, the Orange light will come on signaling charge, however if I do Vol - + Power the light goes off and nothing happens, and the same if I just power on, I have to remove the battery and re-insert to get it to charge again.
what ROM?
Also, if you do a fastboot. "back button" then power?
Are you running Leedroid by chance?

I am running one of the stock-but-rooted ROM's.
It can be found here.
And I can confirm that the back-button and power causes the same problem as trying to get into HBoot. If I was on LeeDroid, could the scenario for that problem possibly fix this one?

It does if I try to turn it on (which is when the screen goes black and nothing happens.)
Okay than the thermosensor is preventing from it from charging. Well 2 things come to my mind:
1. Check the contact pins which are connecting to the battery. See if they are not bent. (not touching the copper). If they are, try to fix them with a precision screwdriver.
2. Put the phone into the freezer (suggested bya danish XDA member, can't remeber who) for a few minutes (3-4). and try to charge.

I have managed to get to Fastboot after putting the device in the freezer, problem is, when i press vol +/- nothing happens.
Then IDK - these are the most frequent errors for the problem: Dead battery/overheating. And the bent pins were causing the problem (not contacted the copper sheets on the battery).
Somebody mentioned, that an extremly drained battery will produce the same blinking effect.
Also, try the wall charger and not via USB (just in case).

I really don't know what's just happened...I think maybe my TP2 just decided to die on me.
I was using NRGZ Leo ROM from 22nd Feb. All was going well until my battery ran out today. At the time, my daughter was playing a game on it, not from WM, but from the Android port (Haret). While she was playing, I heard the familiar short vibrate of a soft reset. I know my battery was low and I suspect the battery wasn't charging, although it was plugged in (not sure if Android supports charging yet in the later builds)
Anyway, for some reason, it wouldn't go past the vibrate/Touch Pro2 screen. It just kept resetting and looping back. I attempted to do a hardware reset (power button, talk/send, end buttons) but accidently chose the wrong combo (power button, volume down) and entered bootloader. No problem yet, just reset and try again, right? Only I didn't get the chance, as it reset itself and looped through bootloader.
Now I am stuck in this loop. I can't flash from SD as it wont stay on long enough before self-resetting to find the RHODIMG.nbh on the card. I can't connect to my PC as it wont stay in bootloader long enough before self-resetting for my PC to install the "Windows Mobile Device" drivers, and even if it did, when it self-resets, it would disconnect anyway. I can't connect to MTTY for the same reason. I can't connect to ActiveSync or WMDC as I can't boot to WM to get ActiveSync running on the device.
When plugged in to AC power or through USB, it fires itself up automatically and into this loop, and it wont turn off manually, reset or accept any other button combos to enter RUU (from SD method) or to do hard reset. When it is not plugged in to any power source it won't even switch on.
I suspect it is resetting as it is not charging. I'm guessing that when in bootloader, charging is disabled, and I think this because I was originally getting 3 seconds of bootloader, now I am getting around 8 seconds, but it doesn't get any better than that, and I don't know of a rom upgrade method that can be done in 8 seconds! There are a few seconds of charging time before bootloader kicks in and the orange LED goes out and presumably stops charging. Am I right in thinking there is no charging in bootloader and in the Android port (I am using the latest version from 27/2, rhod100).
Basically, to summarise, I am stuck in bootloader-reset-bootloader loop, I cannot connect to pc in any way, flash from SD, Hard Reset, I have very little or no battery and it won't charge because it keeps going into bootloader where there is no charging taking place and it wont turn off to charge that way either.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I don't hold out much hope though. At the moment, it doesn't seem that I am able to interact with it at all to make it do anything different or to manipulate what it is trying to do. Hopefully someone will see something familiar and maybe have some suggestions.
Oh, and by the way, it's nothing to do with a bad flash. I've been doing this for long enough to know what I'm doing, and I wasn't even doing a rom upgrade at the time. My last rom upgrade was 2 days ago and all went well, and I have been using it without problems since, until now. I haven't flashed my Radio or SPL since HSPL was released, so I know it has nothing to do with that either.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can give any advice at all, or even just take pitty on me! Apologies for all the text. I know it looks boring and may put some people off reading, but I needed to get all the info in.
Are you able to charge when it completely turned off?
can you pull the battery out, put it back in and simply charge for an hour or so to get some juice into the battery?
Then you could maybe reflash it from the bootloader or sd card...

If I take the battery out, obviously, it cuts the power and the looping stops...until I put the battery back in, and it starts itself again. I can't stop the loop and I can't turn the power off or even stop it switching itself on.

I had exactly that problem after a bad romflash. I bought a decktop cradle for the tp 2 that has 2nd. battery charger. Charged the battery and reflash, everything was ok again.
So, juice up the battery and do a hard reset or reflash..
SOMETHING LIKE THIS
I know you prob dont wanna hear it, but id say its a warranty job. Theyll just force flash it anyway so they wont notice the rom you were using.
Cheers guys. I thought it might be the rom. Not sure how though as like I said, my last rom flash was a couple of days ago and it was fine. Guess these things just happen sometimes. I'll try and get the battery charged somehow. Trouble is, I don't know another single person who has a TP2, so it looks like the cradle option I think. It did cross my mind to be honest when I was trying to think of alternative charging methods.
As for the warranty idea, if it can be avoided, I'd rather not take that route if I can help it, but thanks for the suggestion. Lets just say that will remain an option as my last resort if all else fails.
Still open to suggestions if anyone knows of any miracles....any Hogwarts graduates kicking about these forums with a few magic words to spare?
Hey man, I had the same issue when my phone wouldn't for some unknown reason charge.
1) Take our your battery
2) Plug in your DESKTOP CHARGER (not USB from PC!!) to microUSB slot
3) Put your battery back
4) Wait few moments (5 minutes)
5) and you are ready to boot, now you can even charge from USB. No idea why, but looks like booting takes more than 500mA :O
If it wont help, swap those 2 and 3 points
Hey guys! Please give this thread a better title. More related to the problem. Sounds like it could be useful in the future for hopefully very few people.
OK, I will change the thread title. I searched for quite a while but couldn't find any similar cases. But it seems it is more common than I thought since I raised the issue, so a new, more specific title might be more beneficial to other users experiencing similar problems.
For the record, I haven't solved it yet. Waiting on a standalone battery charger I bought from eBay. Didn't really want the cradle. THIS is the one I have bought. I will update on my progress when it arrives.
Thanks for your help to all who have contributed so far.
Hi I have the same problem the phone won't charge or connect via usb I think it is a faulty usb port the phone have & because of that it is causing the phone to go to bootloader.
I've had this happen before, just plug it into the mains charger (wall charger) and let it sit for a while. It will loop a couple times but once there is enough juice in the battery it will be back to normal.
Since you have RHODIMG.nbh on your sd card, maybe taking your sd card out would help it a bit.
There have been other posts with the same issue and plugging it into mains will solve the problem

Seems like it would make sense. I don't have my wall charger on me now...does the Rhodium not boot up without a battery in it? I thought my old Hermes did, guess I've never tried it with the TP2.
This might sound a little stupid, but I actually know somebody that said it worked for his iPhone (waste of 3-4 mins if not). Plug in the USB charger from PC. Reboot the PC without disconnecting the phone. Wait 3-4 minutes...

Definitely doesn't power up plugged in without a battery. Battery needs to be present. Still waiting on this charger though. I'm hoping it's not one of those where it says the item location is Cardiff (UK) when actually it's in Hong Kong and takes 14 years to arrive

Well when I unplug the ac adapter, mine doesn't last on bootloader for more than a couple of seconds before dying. Doesn't even get to the RHODIMG.nbh update screen that way - not enough charge (I'm still hoping). Tried charging overnight while looping but still wouldn't charge enough. The trouble is that obviously the bootloader is killing the battery as it's not charging very much.
Got my charger finally....but they sent the wrong one. Waiting on a response from the seller. The "dock" on the charger wasn't big enough, so while the connectors were in the right place to charge the battery, the battery didn't sit flush, so they wouldn't reach the points on the battery itself. Hope they have a TP2 one & it's not just them thinking it's compatible, as it's the only one on the whole of ebay UK that has them in stock in the UK. Don't want to have to wait up to 2 weeks for one from HK.
I will keep you posted anyway.
Hi I brought mine 2 get fix because my warrenty got void due 2 water damage. I think it is the usb port that is causing this, saw in other forums the same thing. Will get back the phone on monday & I will update u on the situation.
Hi having a little problem with my phone, ive taken it to a few shops and neither could fix it.
ill tell you what i did, i s-off'd my device and it worked well but i didnt like the joker boot splash so i reflashed clockwork mod recovery in hope it would get rid and it did, then i wanted to partition my SD card but realised you couldnt do it through that recovery so i went back to the alpharev recovery! partitioned my sd card and flashed Defrost 6.0k which id had running before the hd rom i had on, i then rebooted my phone and it got stuck in boot loop for some reason? i removed the battery booted into fastboot and it just came up with a blank black screen so i removed the battery again put it back in and tada no power? no led when on charge? any help would be appreciated!
How long have you left it plugged into the charger for? Leave it for about 10 minutes and see if you get any joy with the led.
If that does work, you may have the USB brick. I'm just clutching at straws at the minute though!
i have left it on charge all night still absolutely nothing
Do you get any response when you plug it into a computer? Can you see it using adb?
Me too...
My Desire stopped also working today. Practically same symptoms...
In my case the origin is different, I was on Adamg Oxygen 2.0.1. and loaded the latest kernel from Thalamus 2.6.37 R5. All good, the phone was working for a few hours without issues. Went to sleep and left the phone charging (as usual).
This morning the phone was off, no way to turn it on. No led on charging (probably because batt is full). I can see the leds (green/orange) when on charge and batt off, but it doesnt start, no way to force start to recovery (power+vol-down), no view from laptop via adb, in fact it doesnt even identify the device, which I guess is natural if the device is not starting.
Needless to say that any ideas are more than welcome...
I'm not an expert but it might be dead battery aswell, no idea why people leave their phones charging all night long.. i charge my Desire from about 10% to full in like 1 hour.
u need to take out the batt an see if u can charge it whitout using the phone to charge it
First, thanks for taking the time to reply...
For reference, the batt is full, I checked it with a voltimeter and it is good.
I discharged the batt a bit as well, but so far nothing works...
So not a problem with dead batt...
Ive tried charging without the battery in too, no sign of life!!!
For further reference in case anyone is interested.
Battery is charged (tried with another mobile which started without issue).
I also used the batt from another unit in this "dead" one and same behavior, i.e. no turn on, etc.
Only behavior I can easily replicate:
Phone is off, no charger, batt is removed. Now I place the batt in and connect the charger, the orange lef comes up as if it were charging.
When I press the power button (or the VOL-Down with Power), the led goes off and stays off, the only way to go back to seeing the orange led again is to again, remove batt and charger cable, and then putting again back the batt and the charger (in that order).
Hi all!
I have quite a puzzling question for you all. Full detailed story in QUOTES as I couldn't find any SPOILER button that could hide probably irrelevant details
I bought a HTC Desire last November (never rooted it), then sent it to assistance mostly beacuse when connected to AC power it used to reboot on its own when I was using an application while the device was still charging... even if I let it previously charge more than 30 minutes without touching it.
I got it back. They changed the mainboard (that is, everything except SD card, screen cover and... battery, I assume). Since then, I have experienced no problems whatsoever. I can literally plug (Desire to power) and play (games and apps) as much as I want.
Click to collapse
But now another problem surfaces:
When the battery completely discharges, and I plug the Desire to power IMMEDIATELY after the "shutting down..." message, a strange thing happens:
Desire vibrates three times as soon as I connect it to power and looks like dead!
No orange led that displays charge, no response to power button, today I also tried the power+volume down combination but no response: it really looks like dead... as, if I may, it had no battery at all! Also, since I have never rooted it, I don't think there's a problem in the ROM.
Luckily enough, this problem is solved by removing and replacing the battery and connecting the phone back to power. But, most important, this problem never happens if I wait 5-10 seconds before connecting to power.
I know the world has much more serious problems to cope with, but if you feel like sharing your thoughts with me be the welcome... what could be causing this? Could this problem get worse in the future? Is the battery faulty?
i have this problem we need help
Hello!
I had a little accident with my friend's HTC Desire.
Just got the root thing done with the latest unrevoked, I was copying some custom roms onto my SD to try them.
After I inserted the card and booted up into recovery, my battery dropped out.
Nothing happens since then... It just won't start, even no "charging led".
It's on charger for around 1 hour now, nothing happens.
What do you think? Did I f***d it?
Thank you, and sorry for my english...
Pull out the battery, press the power button for 5 seconds, insert battery back, see if it reboots.

The battery was out all night, still nothing...
If you take out the sd-card, still nothing happens?
It might be a hardware issue. Somehow, the battery drop caused a hardware failure.
Or maybe you have a faulty battery. Try with another similar battery and see what happens.

I tried around 4 hours ago, I inserted the battery, everything was the same.
Now I've found THIS thread and it's the same, if I put it on charger, WITHOUT battery, the led flashes in orange and green, ant it loops.
Is this a good signal? What do you think? What does it mean?
If I insert the battery, the led stops flashing, and there are no signs of life.
Thank you in advance!
UPDATE: I asked my friend who has a working Desire to plug in the phone to usb and he had the same leds flashin'.
The last thing i can think of is putting it in the freezer for 10 minutes, then trying to boot.
If you can't somehow boot in hboot, the phone is dead.

Sorry, had no time for reply but I'm back now.
So... I put the phone in the freezer for 15 minutes. Still no boot but the orange led showed up on usb. That means the battery was charging.
BUT it wasn't. I tried my battery in a working Desire and it was not charged at all. I could charge it with the other phone.
I tried the good phone's battery in my Desire but all the same. The led shows it is charging but not... And no boot at all...
So the orange led shows "charging". When I press the power button, the led turns off and nothing happens...
Could it be a contact problem maybe at the pins?
Thank you!
Hi,
my battery ran very low (~2%), and I put it in a car charger, and used it for a call. I've heard of car chargers or combination of different cables etc. causing problems, but I think I can rule out a burned out motherboard, as the phone was functioning for the call and a text was sent after.
About 5 min after I took it out of the car charger (got home) I noticed that the capacitive buttons were lit. I tried turning the phone screen on, nothing happened. So I held down the power button for 20 seconds or so, again nothing. Then I held down the power button and volume down, and it went into recovery (twrp)
Not sure why I did this, but I wiped the cache and dalvik cache, and hit reboot system. Now at this point I don't know if the battery died, or if it tried to reboot and didn't work. Either way, it is now dead
I have tried the following;
Hold power button, no response
Hold power button, and volume down, no response
Hold power button, volume down and volume up, no response
Left charger plugged in for an hour, no response
There is no led light on when the charger is plugged in
I have tried connecting to a pc, it makes the 'new device connected' sound, and soon after, the disconnect sound. Windows states that the usb device is not recognised.
Any ideas?
Forgot to mention I'm on Slimrom 4.2.2 build 8 official
Is it true that the phone can't be charged while in TWRP?
Any help would be appreciated, I need to flash KK!!
Shameless bump
I have tried the script to get the phone to charge/ get battery voltage here;

Also, I have read that there could be a script to get the phone to charge, post #4 here mentions that;
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one-x/300271-htc-one-x-will-not-turn.html
Can anyone pls help with this script mentioned in post #4??
I've rooted/ custom rom'd about 9 phones, I can't believe that it can be bricked by losing battery power while in recovery... nothing has ever gone wrong like this, please help!!
Try leaving it charging for ~24 hours
Try unplugging the battery from the motherboard and plugging it back in, if not get a new battery HOX is only about 5 pounds or you can upgrade to a HOX+ battery for about 20 pounds.
tried charging overnight ~12 hrs, no joy, but thanks
I have it opened up now, so might try disonnecting and re-connecting battery, thanks
I have been speaking to the team at TWRP on irc chat. Somebody suggested to strip USB cable back and connect bare wires to terminals of battery to see if it will charge. Will this cause problems as USB is ~5v and the battery is 3.7v??

I wouldn't risk the USB thing. You might as well get a new battery. I have a spare HOX+ battery which is 2040mah bigger than the HOX, I could sell that to you for a cheaper price than everyone elses.
I have since replaced the battery, and also a new power flex cable (that I broke during disassembly!) and something has changed at least......
Beforehand, Windows did not recognise the device at all, sometimes the 'USB device not recognised' dialogue box wouldn't even appear, although it would make a sound
Anyway, now it says that it's not recognised, but in Device Manager, it says it is a APX device (before it was an unknown device)
Can anyone shed any light on this?
