Unlock samsung galaxy tab 8.9

You have a Samsung galaxy tab bound to an operator and you want to unlock it.
I’ve been through a thorough search in the internet and finally I got a solution. My tab is now free. It’s a bit complex, but not impossible.
Below, I’ll give a very clear and detailed description of the whole procedure you have to go through to unlock your tablet.
I you follow all the steps, you will be sure to get the expected result.
Step 1: Root your tab
[ why root the tablet: unlocking the tablet requires access to hidden system files in the root. The root is not normally made accessible to the standard users]
- From the web, search a Root package (easy to find on the web, just google ‘galaxy’ ‘root zip’ you’ll get a small zip file, it may be root.zip, root2.zip, doesn’t matter),
- download the root zip file,
- Copy it to your tab and remember exactly the folder where you paste it.
- Turn off you tab,
- Press simultaneously the volume (-) and power buttons and continue pressing until you got a system screen with two items menu (download, and …),
- Press the volume (-) again to navigate through the two items of the menu, select upgrade,
- In the top of the screen, you’ll get a list menu with 4 items. Scroll to item “install from SDCard” (use volume (-) and (-) to scroll),
- Press power button to select,
- You’ll have to select the root zip folder, navigate through the folder structure using volume (-) (+) buttons,
- Press the power button to execute the zip file,
- Rooting operation will start, you’ll see many progress messages, just wait until the whole process finishes, it takes few seconds.
- Navigate back the menu item “reboot the tab”, press power button.
[ Your tablet will reboot now, you will notice no change, but the change is there, your tablet is now rooted]
Step 2: Preparing to unlock
- From the market, install the free app “super user”,
- Open the newly created shortcut “super user” and validate any message you get, close if necessary, [the SuperUser is an app that will work in the background and grant permissions –when necessary- to other applications to access root. Without it, rooting a tab is meaningless],
- From the market, install “root manager”,[root manager is now your file manager that can go deep through the folder structure and access root folders],
- Launch the “root manager”, the first time you do that, you’ll be prompted to allow “Super User” to grant permissions to “root manager”, allow that,
- Take some time to make yourself familiar with “root manager”, it’s a very simple but powerful file manager,
- Now go back to serious work, locate the folder \efs at the root, [efs folder is very important, it holds all the information to validate your tablet to the GSM/3G operator, it validates the authenticity of your IMEI]
- Just make a copy of the whole folder and save it in a safe place – your PC or a memory stick-. We’ll be back later to this copy, continue now on the tab,
- Open \efs folder, locate the file nv_data.bin,
- Make a copy of nv_data.bin in the same folder \efs and rename the file eg: ORIGINAL_nv_data.bin,
- Delete all the files in the \efs folder except nv.log. Don’t delete the sub folders ( you should normally have the following sub folders .files, imei, gyro….),
- Now leave the tablet powered on (don’t turn off) and move to your PC to continue job,
Step 3: Molding the nv_data.bin file
- In the copy of the \efs folder that you previously made, locate the original file nv_data.bin,
- Make a copy of this file somewhere in your PC. That’s the copy you will be working on,
- Edit nv_data.bin with HexEdit.[ If you are not familiar with depths of binary files, don’t be daunted by the array of codes and bytes],
- Locate the byte 0x181469, it should read 01 value, just edit it to 00 value, do nothing more, just save and exit,
- Now you have created the molded copy of nv_data.bin,
- You need to move this copy of nv_data.bin onto your tablet, either using a memory stick or by USB cable. Paste the file in the \efs folder,
Step 4: tweaking the molded nv_data.bin file
- Now that you pasted the molded nv_data.bin to \efs folder, it needs some minor adjustments before being used,
- In the “root manager”, press and hold on the newly pasted nv_data.bin,
- You’ll get a menu, select properties,
- In the properties box, check all the 9 options (read, write, execute), leave the others,
- Save and exit root manager,
- Go the market and install the free app “terminal emulator”,
- Launch the terminal emulator, accept any message for super user permission,
- In the terminal emulator, execute the following commands [press enter after each line of command]:
o su
o chown 1001:radio \efs\nv_dat.bin
o reboot
- It’s done, your tablet will reboot unlocked.
Verification to make sure everything is OK
- Go to settings, about device, status. Make sure you have a valid IMEI number, the one you have printed on the back of your tablet, not the fake one: 00004**********,
- Insert a valid SIM module, you’ll be promted to enter PIN code if configured so,
- Enter PIN code,
- Enter the APN provided by your operator (necessary to access internet 3G),
ENJOY FREELY

I have rooted AT&T version of tab 8.9, and there is no \efs\nv_dat.bin file on it...

sir can you post an edited nv_data.bin? i cant hex it.. it says it cannot find the bytes you provide TIA

Same for me, /efs folder is completely empty?

no nv-data.bin at all, i tried everything with no luck.
efs folder has some files but no nv_data.bin

I know this is an old post but install from SD card doesn't work in my recovery mode because there is no SD slot. How else can I install the files?

Hello there,
I have a simple question, I'm sure most of you developers know how to help us all.
I have a NST not rooted (I don't really need for mods and stuff) but I would like to get rid of the manual and the quick start guide that really annoys me.
Is it possibile to create a zip (maybe an img would be even better) that starts ClockworkmodRecovery and then that includes a flashable zip that deletes the 2 epubs?
So that everyone can delete them once and for all. :laugh:

Perhaps it would be better to download and install a root explorer (such as ES File Explorer) and use it to browse and delete these epub files.

well, that includes rooting, installing a launcher, installing a program...
i thought that a zip that does it without rooting and without anything permanent on the device would be better.

I make what you asked for, find it enclosed. It is a zip update for CWM. I guess you know how to proceed but I've left instructions below for those who face this issue for first time:
1. Make a backup of your NST with noogie following this instructions.
2. Download the file enclosed within this post.
3. Burn 2gb_clockwork-rc2.img file to be written on a SD-Card using Win32DiskImager or dd on linux.
4. Open the SD-Card (where you burn 2gb_clockwork-rc2.img) and copy the DeletingEpubGuides.zip on the SD-Card.
5. Power down and insert the SD-Card on the NST.
6. Press the power button for 3 seconds, so that the device boots (you don't have to hold the power button after the 3 seconds)
7. As soon as the display changes to the "CWM logo" screen, push and hold the lower left and the lower right button until the screen changes again. Wait until you see the recovery. Hence, you'll be already booted into Clockworkmod recovery (Button layout: Both Buttons on the left: BACK / Upper button on the right: UP / Lower button on the right: DOWN / n button: SELECT / Power button: TOGGLE DISPLAY).
8. Install through CWM recovery the DeletingEpubGuides.zip update placed on the SD-Card. When you'll read "Done" press power button during 10 second and eject the SD-card.
9. Press power button to turn on the nook to let the devices open commonly.
I've just tested it over my NST v1.1.2 and works without problem.

I'm running 1.2.1, and I found them at /system/assets/userguides/standard/ . (There's also a /glowlight/ folder in the /userguides/ directory, FWIW.)
EDIT: However, deleting them there doesn't seem to remove them from the library. And I can't find the /system/media/books folder. Hmmm...
EDIT AGAIN: Also found them in /data/cloud_assets/books/userguides . Deleting, rebooting, and will report back here if that did it.
LAST EDIT I SWEAR: SUCCESS! Deleting them from all the locations listed above made them vanish from the library.

How to STOP the Sprint update notification [GUIDE & VIDEO]

You can follow this guide to stop the Sprint update notification using the latest version of ES File explorer. This instruction is for the Sprint Samsung Galaxy note II. This is known to work on other Samsung devices as well. This guide will begin from scratch so that anyone can follow it from square one. If you already have root and ES File Explorer set up you can skip to step 7

1. First be sure you have superuser access (root access). You can use a root checker like this one to be sure

2. Download and install ES File explorer. You can get that here...

3. Open ES File explorer and grant root permission. Go into settings and set your preferences
4. Tap your device menu
5. Tap Tools
6. Tap root explorer.
7. The root explorer menu will pop up and you'll tap Mount R/W
8. Fill in all the bubbles for RW and tap OK
9. Navigate to the root of your device (At the Top you'll see the root directory is listed as "Device" or "/")
10. Tap the File named "etc"
11. Tap the File named "security"
12. Long press on the otacerts.zip until the check box appears and put a check in it.
13. Tap more
14. Tap properties
15. Place check marks in the read and write boxes and Tap ok
16. Tap rename (on the bottom action bar)
17. Rename the otacerts.zip file to otacerts.bak and tap ok
18. Tap refresh (bottom action bar)
19. Pull down the notification curtain and accept the update. *Some devices reboot here. (if the notice isn't in your notification bar just go on to the next step)
20. On your homescreen open your device menu and Tap system settings.
21. Scroll to and select System update.
22. Tap Update firmware.
Your device will say it is up to date and you won't get the notification anymore. If you do then reboot and start over because you skipped something.

About that... I do appreciate your comment but I wanted to make a guide (and video) to help the most people. I felt like giving a free option here would be the best way to go.
I know there are apps that can freeze the updater but I didn't want to get into a comparison of the apps that may do it or provide instruction for every single one of them. Also there have been reports that freezing the updater didn't work or caused other issues. The solution I provided will work on the Sprint SGN2 (and other Samsung devices) and only requires ES File Explorer which I feel very comfortable recommending and is free.
I would like to consider all the options, though. So, going forward if we're going to recommend alternative solutions I think it would be best if a guide (or a link to a guide or video) would also be posted with it...or at least some detailed instructions. This way the most people will get the most out of it.

First backup, in some roms it disabled by default and i'm not sure but it should be some like system updater or updater some like that

This is an excellent guide and a sure and EASY way to get rid of those pesky updates.

just got my sprint note 2 last night its on 4.12 followed the vid and was ok for about 1 hour now i'm getting a thing for a 28.9 mb system update. how big is the 4.3? is it safe to take this little one? and I am rooted at this point thanks

The update notice you're seeing now is minor. It contains a security enhancement and nothing else worth mentioning. You needn't worry about it.
On a side note if you want 4.3 and don't want to wait for the OTA update you can get it here

Did exactly as described following the YouTube Video. Restarted and got the update notification. It did not work.

I don't want to seem contentious but you must have missed something in the process. This process is tried and true and has worked for tens of thousands of people so you most likely missed some minor thing. At any rate, when done exactly right it works.
I would suggest that you first make sure you're rooted and if so make sure that you've granted root to ES File explorer. Next make sure the otacerts.zip file has retained the name change to otacerts.bak and if it didn't then you've got permissions problems. Next in ES make sure root explorer has RW selected on each item. Make sure the icon for the otacerts file looks like a question mark (if it looks like a zip start over).
The best thing to do is just repeat the process. Take it slow and don't get frustrated. If you'd like to make a video of you going through the process I can look at it and tell you what you're missing.

All of the things you mentioned I did. I am running a stock rom and am rooted. That being said, I may have posted too quickly before. After performing the tasks that you outlined very clearly, the notification returned upon reboot. I slid it away and it has not returned. So, I humbly withdraw my previous post.

If you wanna test to see if it comes back you could reboot again. If it doesn't come back after a reboot then you're all set. Let us know how it goes.

I would suggest going through the process again. It's very easy to miss some small step in the process. Be sure you're rooted, make sure you've granted root to ES File explorer, make sure you have Root Explorer turned ON, make sure you have rw selected for all four selections under the Mount R/W menu, and make sure your name change of the otacerts.zip file sticks, make sure that the otacerts.bak file looks like a question mark and not a zip, and remember to refresh. Those are the most common things people overlook when running through this process.
Watch the video and follow precisely. Take it slow and don't let the video get ahead of you. I go really fast through it in the video so the pause button will be your friend. You'll get it don't worry.

I got it figured out, had to click on the update. .

I saw that this game is big sensation..So I was a little bit curious,and i found this
So If you wanna be a big guy in your team (friends) follow these steps (your device must be rooted!!)
1. Download this game from market
2. You need a file manager that can access root folders (ex. es file explorer)..And when you download these 2 you are ready to go
3. Run game,and play it until you crash (that will be very fast ) or immediately..
4. Just hit a home button
5. Run your's file explorer that can access root files,and in search type "flappy" and you will be navigated to "com.gears.flappybird" enter in that file
6. Then you will see folder "shared_prefs" and open that folder
7. You will see "FlappyBird.xml" and open it with text editor
8. And you will see code line

10. And instead of 1 type and number you want And tap options menu and save

Well it does work. But the score doesn't appear on the leaderboards.

Not? Hmm..Try cleaning the game cache and try again..Cause it works for me..It shows if you put normal number

This method works for many games.
The reason it doesn't update on the leaderbords in Google Play is just simply because the game stores your score when you actually achieved it.
In other words; the shared preference value is only used for the dialog when you die.

How to stop the annoying click sound or change it on Amazon Fire Tv
Do you hate or love the click sound when moving around on the Fire Tv? Well if like me you can't stand that annoying sound, I will tell you how to remove that "click" or replace for a sound of your own? This has been tested on my AFTV2 but Im 99.9 % sure it will work on Gen 1 & the Fire Sticks too (I will try on my Fire Stick later) as long as you have root access.
PLEASE READ
This process needs root access & make sure you only change the file I'm talking about, I will not be responsible if you brick your device by being silly & deleting dependable files on your Fire Tv, I advice you don't delete it just incase then If you need to go back you can change or rename with adb. If you want to make a backup with twrp recovery you can back as far as I can see this process Is safe to do & I have tested & have not had any problems (so far).
Steps-
1. Using a file manager goto system/media/audio/ui
2. Select Mount R/W if you haven't already so you have authority to write to the device
3. Select, tick or change the Effect_Tick.ogg file & press rename
4. Rename as Effect_Tick.ogg.bac
5. Exit the file manager & now reboot the device using the select & the play/pause buttons held down together for about 5 or 6 seconds
6. Now a message will flash Up saying something like Effect_Tick.ogg not working or something similar? (Don't panic)
7. Once rebooted the annoying click has gone!
Replacing for a blank file
I have included a download of blank audio which i named Effect_Tick.ogg (just needs to be unziped) if you just replace this with the old sound or .bac the original & push this ogg file in the location system/media/audio/ui & then reboot you will have a non clicking scroll & also wont get any error Effect_Tick.ogg not working messages.
Bringing the click back
If you want to bring the click back, go back into system/media/audio/ui & delete the .bac part at the end of the name so it's Effect_Tick.ogg once again, reboot & it's back.
Changing the click for a different/custom sound
Or after you have done step 4 you could copy a audio file In the ogg format & name it Effect_Tick.ogg & then reboot
