I've finally taken the plunge and moved to a different OS (android) after being a supporter of Windows mobile for so long. So a lot of comparison going on at the moment
Anyway, one application I really liked in WinMo was the phone alarm which could change profies, notification settings, connectivity etc. This could also be scheduled. Is there something similar I can have for the desire? I couldn't seem to find such a setting on the desire.
Also, is it possible to activate the screen saver when it times out? Currently I get a black screen, but would be cool to get a clock or something, especially while I'm at work. I see there is an app called 'Desk clock' and I quite like the look of that but I haven't figured out how to actiavate it on screen timeout (like a screensaver)
Finally, has anyone used a docking station with the desire yet? I've seen a few here but not sure if they are any good
phoneAlarm replacement
I too was an avid pA user on WinMo and I haven't [as yet] found a direct replacement. I am using an App called 'Auto Task' which does some of pA's features (http://android.a0soft.com). Still looking for a good location based switching app though.
Try locale for all your needs. It does location based everything and has various plugins you can add too.
I have it turn on desktop when docked, switch off sounds and vibrate mode when entering work, switch off all sounds at night, auto sync when connected to wifi, and enable bluetooth when driving Excellent app.
Settings Profiles - is worth a look too
Hi.
You might also want to try Settings Profiles it similar to Locale and the WinMo app phoneAlarm.
I've used both (actually I've tried all 3) and I've settled for the time being on Settings Profiles.
It's available in the Marketplace.

+1 This is a brilliant app. I recently converted from winmo too.
http://www.probeez.com/
Thanks guys, I've downloaded the lite version of Setting Profiles and it seems very good so far. Lots of customizations possible. I might purchase the full version if the lite version works well.
The only concern I had is that some of the reviews imply that it works fine for sometime and then it is not very reliable. Did any of you have similar experiences?
I have the Full vesion. IMO well worth the (small amount of) money. I have had no problems with reliability with the HTC Desire
Profile Switching etc
I have been testing a new app called "Tasker" which has an astounding array of features for controlling the phone. It is currently in beta test but I have not had any issues with it.
Checkout the web page at "tasker.dinglisch.net"
It is due to be released to market shortly and will cost around $6, (if you buy it direct via paypal it will be $1 less) which is cheaper than "Locale" and from what I have seen much more powerful.
I recommend reading the online guide to get a handle on how to use it, I think I am only scratching the surface at the moment but for me I am definately going to buy it once it is released...
Are we supposed to get the new vector graphics from the latest update? Is there a way to enable them? Google maps doesn't seem to be any different after the update.
Senseless rEVOlution 1.0 / Incredikernal
The maps aren't drastically different in appearance (other than when zoomed way in on a major city, like Chicago), but the performance is WAY better. Zooming in and out is almost fluid smooth with the text redrawing after the resize transition.
Also, it should get better the more you use it and then more map data it caches. I've been turning on maps when driving around to make sure I get a lot of cached data.
I'm hoping to cache a zoomed out continental U.S. for use when flying commercial.
It's not legal to use the transmitters on any phone while in flight, but (once the pilot says you are above 10,000 ft/3,000m) you can use the compass and GPS sensors - at least you can use GPS if you have a window seat!.
Call it the grown-up version of "Are we there yet?", or "Where are we?", but rather than memorize geocoordinates for the U.S. or carry a paper map, I'd like to have my DINC show me where we are on a Google Map.
BTW, Catch.com's Compass v2.0 has a GPS mode that includes pitch & roll sensors in addition to GPS & compass data. Works like a poor-man's artificial horizon to see what your pilot is doing with the aircraft.
So you guys did get the update? Mine still isn't using vector graphics, which is why I asked the question. It must be rom specific then
Check the market. It's available there. There i's a chance you won't see it though. I've had first-hand experience with a couple apps I couldn't view in market and other people could.

Agreed, it did the update on mines, but cannot use the 3d view by sliding two fingers over screen, am running latest version of MIUI, however I'm running the "Gingerbread" rom on my DX and it works just fine. It must be rom specific I'm guessing.

New to the DINC but why are DX users asking about DINC like they get all the same features? DX has different hardware and manufacturers than the DX. Surely there will be different effects on the Market
I need help with testing for this device and flip style cases.
I had a bunch of requests for Wave Control to have this functionality. Flip Case Control simply turns off the screen with the case is closed and turns it on when it is opened and it is designed to work using as little battery as possible. (I left it running all night ~8.5 hours and the battery dipped 1% more than usual)
IMPORTANT: If your case is black or dark on the inside, the sensor doesn't read correctly when the case is closed. To fix this, put a piece of light colored tape on the inside of the case where it lines up with the sensor (located next to the front camera)
Note: A Samsung based ROM is required. CM doesn't seem to work well.
Demo video:
Thanks! (crossing fingers it works without needing modification)
Edit (10/20/2012)
Taking it out of beta for this device with V1.05

It works as shown in the youtube video on the I9300 BUT the other versions of the SGSIII use a different proximity sensor and I'm worried there's a issue with flip case like there is on the Note.
Could you guys try it out and see if it works like in the youtube video on the I9300? I'm not in the US right now so I don't have easy access to the non I9300 versions.
Note: A Samsung based ROM is required. CM doesn't seem to work well.
Demo video:
Here's the trial version of the app to test out. (The Play Store version is limited to the I9300 for now)
Once it's working correctly, I can post the full version.
Thanks! (crossing fingers it works without needing modification)

Just tried it using my ATT SGS3. It works fine. Only issue I saw was that it takes about 3-5 seconds for the screen to shut off, so if you close then open the cover quickly, the screen is still on.
Thanks,
Dave
I've noticed a fairly large drop in battery since installing. About 7 percent in a little over an hour. This was with out using my phone at all. So while it seems it works ok, it looks like a battery hog and I have uninstalled for now.
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks for letting me know. Maybe I've got a bug in the trial version. I'll test it out today on my phone and see if I get similar results.
After uninstalling can you confirm that your battery performance went back to normal?

Any chance of this working on the note 10.1.?
If you send me the apk I will try it out for you as play store won't allow install.

Unfortunately the Note 10.1 doesn't have a proximity sensor so this app won't work.
At least that's what I've confirmed on the Wifi version. I guess there's a small chance the 3G version may have one. See if you can install Wave Control. I haven't blocked any devices on that app and it requires the prox sensor too.

Wave Control wont let me install from the play store either, so guess thats the end of the road !
Version 1.20:
1. New Swipeable UI - Swipe left for settings, Swipe right for Night Disable
2. New Night Disable Mode - Shut off the sensor at night while you sleep. Saves a tiny bit of battery and keeps you from keeping the sensor on 24/7.
3. Auto Start on Boot works on the Trial Version now.
4. Bug fixes
I'm still not happy with the UI. It's functional for presenting the new functionality but I need to polish it up a bit.
What do you all think?
Any other features/options you would like to see?
Its working fine for me. Just as someone said before, there's some lag for the screen shut off.

By no means am I taking credit for this. I have copied this over from the 9505 with permission from IRONMAN link to original thread
I will be maintaining this thread over here.....
As said per IRONMAN:
Hello, everyone. I have decided to make this Recommend-An-App thread so that YOU can share your favorite apps with everyone in this community.
****BUT THERE IS ONE CONDITION NO SUPER POPULAR APPS****
Don't post apps like PowerAMP and Flipboard and Swiftkey. EVERYONE knows about these apps.
The purpose of this thread is to make everyone aware of new apps which are largely unheard of. Apps which are not so popular. I was too tired of seeing numerous lists full of apps I already knew about.
So everyone, start posting! A brief summary would be appreciated (Unless the name is self-explanatory) as well as a PlayStore link (we all are too lazy to search for ourselves)
I will try to keep this list as up-to-date as possible.
1) Atom Launcher- A great launcher with many options for customization while maintaining a minimalistic look. I personally recommend Typo Black Theme to go along with it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kbHRvLmF0b20ubGF1bmNoZXIiXQ..
Typo Black Theme- https://play.google.com/store/apps/...oZXJleC50aGVtZS5OYW11U01vZGVyblR5cG9CbGFjayJd
2) WordWeb - In my opinion, THE best dictionary out there. Why? Because its offline. Doesn't require an internet connection!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...53b3Jkd2Vic29mdHdhcmUuYW5kcm9pZC53b3Jkd2ViIl0.
3) Wallbase - I've tried 'em all and nothing has helped me find better wallpapers than this app. And most of them are full HD.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5jaXRjLndhbGxiYXNlIl0.
4) LyricsPlayer - This app shows a notification on the status bar when you're playing music, clicking on it automatically searches for the lyrics and displays them.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...EsImNvbS5saW5rLmFuZHJvaWQubHlyaWNzcGxheWVyIl0.
5) Holo Compass - The most minimalistic and cool looking compass around.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDEsInBsLnN1cml4LmhvbG8uY29tcGFzcyJd
6) Circle Alarm - A holo themed and minimalistic alarm app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS50amVhbm5pbi5hbGFybSJd
7) Node- Just a super cool live wallpaper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zdWZmaWNrLm5vZGUiXQ..
8) Pimp My Music - This is great for fixing up the ID3 tags in your songs and for finding all the right cover art.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImF1LmNvbS5waWNrdXAucG1tIl0.
9) T.E.A.M. Battery Bar - This displays a coloured bar on top of the status bar showing the battery level (remember MIUI?). A must have for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wdnkuYmF0dGVyeWJhciJd

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5jZWxsdGljay5sb2Nrc2NyZWVuIl0.
11) ConvertIt - Another holo themed and minimalistic app, this one is a unit converter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=42539176
12) Phone Addict - This great little app counts how many times I check my phone. Over a period of time, shows the day I checked my phone the most times, the least times, and how often I check on average.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...5wYW5kdXRlY2hub2xvZ3kucGhvbmVhZGRpY3RmcmVlIl0.
13) Llama - For me this app is a MUST HAVE. I'll explain how it works. Basically, when you're at home or at work, your phone is getting signal from multiple cellphone towers nearby. What this app does is remember these towers and triggers certain profiles when they are in the vicinity. So, when I reach home, my phone automatically turns silent and when none of these towers are in range i.e. when I'm outside, it automatically increases the ring volume. You'll have to let it scan once, of course.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mNvbS5yai5wcm9jZXNzaW5nLnBsYXNtYXNvdW5kaGQiXQ..
16) Sensor Music Player - A music player which lets you use various sensors to change track, pause etc. For example, if I'm using my headphones and my phone is in my pocket, I can just tap my pocket to change the track. Pretty cool. eh?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEsImNvbS56ZWhyby5hbmRyb2lkLmNsb2NrciJd

This app lets you lock the ringer, or any other volume, in a specific spot.

Full Screen Caller ID - It delivers just what it sounds like it's promising. It puts a full screen HD picture as the call screen instead of the stock Android one. There are 5 or 6 other apps that do the same thing but I've been using this one since I had a MyTouch3G when it was the only one of it's kind available and I couldn't live without it now. It's very customizable so you can make the screen look pretty much anyway you want for an incoming call and set whatever picture you want for each person in your address book. It also makes answerign and ignoring easy as you can swipe across any part of the screen. See the atatchement for what one of my friend looks like on an incoming call...you can add the phone number, make it landscape, change the font or text size, add answer and reject buttons or take them away as I have etc etc etc. And you can get to the original phone app with the dial pad and what not with a simple double tap on the screen.
I've never been able to figure out why this isn't stock with Android personally. That's how much I love this app.

Yea I had actually wanted it added to the list then i saw that it did not work so i edited my post. But now that i look at my edit I can see why the confusion happened.
Have been using Wicked 8 for some time, was glad to get 4.3 on my phone with Wicked 9.1.
However, I've noticing a couple things I'm really not a fan of and I'm not sure if it's a WickedROM thing or just an Android 4.3 thing..
1.) The 'Navigation' app seems to have gone away. Now, if I want to access Navigation, I must first launch Maps, then search..then etc etc (was already thoroughly upset with some of the last 'updates' to Maps/Navigation..it really seems to be going in the wrong direction for me..). Am I missing something or is that really what 4.3 brought?
2.) Along with the crappy way to have to launch Navigation, I've noticed the Voice used for the turn-by-turn directions is different. And NOT in a good way. It's terrible. I've checked the Text-to-Speech options and I see that I'm supposed to be able to pick a few different options (the Google engine offers a couple English options, but they sounds TERRIBLE and painfully robotic.) The Samsung engine offers a few other options (including a "High quality" version of English (US And UK)) but most don't sound very good either. So I decided I wanted to go with the HQ English UK voice. I click the button to download the HQ version and nothing happens. I'm not sure if it's downloading or not. Anyhow, regardless of what I end up picking here, it doesn't seem to stick. The navigation (and Google NOW) voice stays the horrible robotic voice. How can I change this!! (Preferably without the need for a 3rd party download) I had no issues with on WickedROM 8.
3.) This one makes me feel a bit silly to ask but. How do I take a screenshot? More specifically, how do I take a screen shot if I've disabled all of the crappy/gimmicky Samsung motion controls?
I'm a fan of the WickedROM series and so far haven't had any issues (aside from the above) with 9.1.. but I am a bit sad to see the boot screen I was using gone (The Sony one) as well as what seems to be much less options for battery icon in taskbar. Oh well.
Thanks for the help!

I have no problem with GPS, and it's not a big deal for me to open maps and do it that way.
To take screenshots is easy, just press the power and home button at the same time for about
5 seconds and the phone takes a screenshot.
Good luck!
Google did away with the nav icon.
