I’d like to tether a spare Moto Milestone android to another Moto (or HTC) android. I’d mainly like to sem-permanently mount one in my car and able to receive calls on it through one in my pocket (with a sim card). Id’ also like to be able to use GPS-google maps and Nav. on it.
I’d basically be sharing a sim card through blue tooth. Any on have any thoughts?
Thanks, PK
Well for starters I've tried tethering android to android a few times in the past just to sync a phone with no sim and for some odd reason it didn't work. At the time I was rooted using one of the tethering apps from the code.google.com site. But I did find later on that it worked only when I used the built in tether feature in Froyo as opposed to the wifi-tether app I got from the above mentioned site which required root access. Hope that helps. (...I also remember one time being able to tether A to A using one similar to the one I said didn't work for me but it was a newer version so maybe that was just a new improved release)
Well
You will have to tether via Bluetooth. The Motorola Milestone isn't capable of AP tethering and can only create Adhoc networks. There are patches for Android that can make your phone recognize Adhoc though, look into it...

Something I've noticed in AOSP ROMs vs Sense is the USB tethering option. I was wondering if anyone has made a Sense ROM with this feature built in, or if it's even possible. As I have come to love the speed of AOSP ROMs, sometimes I like to go back to the smooth feel of Sense; however, I am a Linux user, and none of the USB tethering apps in the market will work with Linux. As my aircard is crapping out on me, I've come to rely on my DInc for internet access(no other form of broadband is available where I live). Any help on this topic is much appreciated.
Thanx,
~Jim
I use a usb tethering app I downloaded from the market its called easy tether

And it works with Linux

You can use wired tether, http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/downloads/list, but you have to have RNDIS built into the kernel. The kernels I've been building recently have it built in already. There was an issue with the RNDIS code in the HTC INC release, don't know why, but I was able to get it fixed by using the code from the Bravo release and it now compiles with it.

You can also use a DUN method to usb tether(for sure works on sense roms). Just gotta edit some values in EPST, and have the right drivers.
I use the easytether lite, which is the free version of easytether. It just doesn't have the ability to use https. If I really really need to use https I can just use my phone or wireless tether, so it's not a huge deal.
Wireless tether always made my phone hella-hot. Easytether makes it warm, as does any continuous use, but nothing extraordinary.

So I'm using your kernel and wired tether 1.4 and it won't work. I can see the numbers going up either way but I'm not able to get an internet connection.
PDAnet works great as well, and shows SMS messages on your computer in an IM format, allowing you to compose and receive texts using your full sized keyboard.

Did you start Wired Tether, then plug the phone in? Or did you start it with the phone plugged in? I've used the tether quiet abit since I built RNDIS in, and it works great.

If you edited your settings to use mobile hot spot that came with 2.2, go into your wireless and network settings. Mobile broadband connect is for usb.

I think you need some kind of driver installed on the pc though... Htc diag...

+1 on PDANet. I have it on all my phones, paid version.
Works well for Inet access backup at work. As a matter of fact our Inet access went down yesterday and we used our phones as backup(s).
Well worth the $$.
Nice tardis

I started wired tether then plugged in. Could there be a driver issue?

I am using RR 2.1 and tried downloading wired tether.
When i open it for the firs ttime it crashes.
When i open it the second time in launches but wont work just FC every time I click on the tether button in the app.
Kinda weird... not sure whats up.
This is v1.4
The Sense 2.0 ROM ported from the Desire Z has the same USB Tether feature (through RNDIS) as the AOSP roms.

any particular reason you do this over the built in wired tether in AOSP Froyo?
OK... I want to use the option to use my phone's internet (via Bluetooth) with my Acer Iconia Tab A100. My phone is a Nokia Asha 302, and yes it has BT PAN... When I pair my phone with my Iconia tab it actually has the option to connect and use phones internet, but when I try it connects and nothing else happens... However when I try to disconnect, my phone disconnects and tablet hangs. My computer has no problems connecting to my phone. I'm at my wits end. Any Ideas? File swap Ideas? Config Mods? I'm open to anything.
Thanks
BTW... My tab is sporting the ICS leak with root, unlocked BL, and thor recovery installed.
ok...
So I did more playing around and found out that when I choose to use my phone's internet and don't get any net. But when I do a pand --show --list it shows "bnep0 B4:395:09:8E:F4 PANU" which is a problem when my bt address is really F4:8E:095:39:B4... Not really sure what the deal is...
I also use BT to tether. Latest version of PDANet on the A100 and Foxfi on the phone. They work seamlessly together.
I couldn't get it to work before the ICS leak, but since then both PDANet and Foxfi have updated. It worked fine when I was on ICS leak, it still works now that I have gone back to HC 3.2.1.
Still can't seem to figure this out... I waited for the official release hoping to have this issue resolved, but still have the same problem. It really seems like some sort of Android bluetooth bug. I mean... All I have to do is pair my tablet with my phone and it natively gives me the option to use my phones internet via BT and when I select it, it connects to the phone only to not actually get any internet connectivity at all (even though my PC has no problems doing this). When I try to disable the connection my tablet locks up forcing me to power it down and boot it back up... I'm not sure, but could the problem be due to the fact that this BT PAN connection is a sort of AD HOC protocol? There was a resolution to this with the AD HOC Wifi issue so could there be a similar step to take for this BT PAN issue?
As I said in the post above you, latest version of PDANet Tablet on the A100 and Foxfi on the phone works. It works after the OTA update, too.
Thanks for your reiteration, however... As I posted in the very beginning, my phone is a Nokia... I noted this mostly because Nokia in the past hadn't provided their phones with the bluetooth PAN profile... I bought this phone specifically for this profile and that it had a much faster processor... And as explained above, everything appears as it should even to the point of seeing the available feature of my phone... Android seems to still have some bugs to work out so it looks as if I'll have to wait some more till it's resolved...
a script
I have the same need and same problems. One of my phones has PAN, the other not.
What it worked for me is this:

(I improved the script for my needs, but now you have the idea
Whatever!
Got rid of the Acer Iconia Tab A100 and upgraded to the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0... It had all of these features available out of the box... I didn't actually get rid of it, just gave it to my wife... Same thing...
I have the HTC one X tegra 3 with IceColdJelly421 V1.6 - 31-01-2013 rom installed.
I also have another android phone with a 3g connection.
My aim was to give this connection to the HTC one X through bluetooth tethering. I know phone to phone tethering is weird but I wanted to try it out.
It did not work! I didn't know if it was my HTC or my other android phone running gingerbread.
So to test this I tried tethering my android phones 3g connection to my nexus 7 following the exact same instructions and it worked fine.
Both the HTC and Nexus 7 are running 4.2.1 so not sure what is wrong here.
There only difference I noticed was for the HTC it was recognized as a phone by the bluetooth on my 3g android whereas the nexus 7 was shown as a laptop, I am talking about the icons inside the bluetooth settings of the 3g android phone.
Any ideas?
Wifi tethering works fine.
Maybe related, maybe not.
I had an issue last night pairing a couple of android devices. My 2 rooted phones (Desire and One X) could see each other and pair easily, but neither of the rooted phones could see my non-rooted tablet (Tab 2 7). Before rooting the One X I had often paired it with the tablet.
Are both your phones rooted?
Could there be a relation between pairing/seeing and rooted/non-rooted or was this just a coincidence?
FYI, worked around the problem with "bluetooth file transfer app" - but dont think it will help with tethering
Since I have updated to 4.2.+ i am not able to connect my xbox to my tether program. ( i pay for the tethering from verizon, just saying for those who wish to flame about tether) I use the built in tethering on the Gnex and All other devices , connect, PS3, Wii U, N7 etc.... except the 360.
Has anyone had this problem and been able to solve it?
Thank you

that actually sounds like your xbox compatibility issue instead of the android issue, afterall your other devices connects no problem.
I have the same problem!! I am running a stock rooted 4.1 rom , and it tethers great.. if I update to any ROM 4.2.X I can not tether my Xbox!! Everything else works great.. I can not figure it out. Its not the Xbox its something to do with 4.2.X.

Anyone using an Andriod phone with their Note 8.0 utilizing tablet talk and all share app? I have an iphone 5 jailbroken which I use for free tethering however I was thinking of getting an andriod phone to take advantage of tablet talk and all share apps. I had a BB torch with the BB Playbook utilizing the bridging functionality and it was great! Wondering if I will have the same experience if I went all Andriod or Samsung. Any feedback would be greatly aprreciated. THANKS in advance!
I use TabletTalk all the time between my Note 8.0 and DROID Bionic. Unfortunately, in comparison to my Nexus 7,there seems to be more issues. The biggest one are the Bluetooth connection of one of the devices (not sure which one might be both) just kinda stupid working between the two devices. The device need a full reboot to connect. This is less frequent between a WiFi connection but still prevalent none the less.
It really probably had something to do with my phone or ROM though. Even when I Bluetooth tether, the device just craps out eventually.

I find after X amount of time Bluetooth has to be turned OFF and then ON again for it to actually work. Otherwise e.g. Tablet Talk connection to my S3 will fail, my keyboard won't be able to connect, etc. Don't ya just love Android and Samsung's Bluetooth capabilities? >_<.
Past that I've had no issues, haven't tried audio or tether yet.
AllShare Play / Link works fairly well and unlike the version on my phone, is still able to see regular DLNA devices (without making me go straight to e.g. Video Player or Gallery). Using it with MiniDLNA on Debian stable, it can be confused and refuse to playback some files with a Foo.jpg cover art file assocaited with Foo.m4v, etc. Third party solutions for DLNA are widely available on Google Play.
