[Q] Partition SD Card for AS2SD Mac OSX - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, I've done quite a search amongst the forums for what I'm after without much success.
Basically I want to format my sd card so I can use A2SD before flashing Oxygen 2.0.2 ROM. I'm currently running 2.0 RC7 on a HTC Desire.
The catch is I use a mac and everything I've looked for and found hasn't been very helpful in explaining how to format my sd card outside of Windows. I do have VMWare running Windows XP, but can't boot into bios to make system boot from disc. Thus GParted is kinda useless (from what I've been read/informed).
Leaves me kinda in the unknown now about how to get this partition happening.
The only real info I found is from like 2009;
1)download the ext2fs plugin AND INSTALL !! (google it if you cant find it " how to partition ext2 on mac")
2)reboot
3)download the appstosd2 app
4)install on phone
5)open appstosd and select partition
6)let it do its thing
7)reboot phone
8)plugin usb
9)mount
10) you will get a error sayin that you need to first aid your disk press command I on your untitled partition or no_name partition

Though I feel that is an outdated method and not suitable to my needs.
So does anyone have any help or advice on how to partition my sd card on a mac, or via Windows XP running via VMware? Would be greatly appreciated beyond belief.

Just run the Gparted iso in vm ware (new virtual machine) or a ubuntu distribution.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php just get the Live disc and burn it or use your VMware Player an get Ubuntu running, open an terminal and apt-get install gparted.
Running XP doenst help you at all.

I'm not very familiar/knowledgeable with VMware in-depth. I have my XP install and that's about the extent of it.
How exactly is one meant to run the Gparted iso in VMware?
I click "New Virtual Machine", "continue without disc" then I get to the installation media window with the 3 choices. I'm assuming I select the one related to an iso/image file (select Gparted iso) then the "Choose Operating System" screen and from there I don't know between the 2 drop down boxes I get.
Again, providing I'm even in the right area.
Probably also wise to say that I don't have the internet cap to just go and download Ubuntu sadly.

Would help if you would mention what options there are in the drop down menu. But you should choose something like linux or ubuntu.

Yeah I selected "Linux" in the first option and then "Ununtu" in the second. Gparted then loaded up.
So sounds as if I'm on the right path. Now just down to following a guide and doing what is needed.

Glad to see you've got gparted loading now. Try searching YouTube for gparted tutorial vids (there's a few) - this is how I learned to partition my card a few months ago and I found it way easier than reading written tutorials.
Hope this helps

Shall do that shortly, might look to format this evening if I can stop using my phone for a bit haha.
Will scope youtube for some tutorials and see how I go, otherwise I'll probably follow this one which I was directed to in the Oxygen thread the other day.

Thanks for the help as well, appreciated.

Gparted isn't picking up my SD Card at all. I plug in my Desire, switch it to Disk mode from the notification bar and it's not picked up. Tried it all before loading Gparted up and also after it. Nothing.
And in my GB Oxygen rom I don't have the following option (connect to PC);
Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type > Disk drive > Done
To do as needed to turn it on in my settings. :/
So now I'm kinda stuck.
-----
Edit:
Tried putting sd card into a microSD adapter and into my card reader on my mac. Still not being picked up at all by Gparted. So I'm assuming something is wrong somewhere along the line and I have no idea what.
Only other idea have at the moment is to maybe format my SD card (which I've backed up) and then try again and see if it reads?

Do it with the card reader, make sure you mount the card reader in vmware and not osx.

It's okay I figured out what the issue was, all good now. Didn't have the usb drive enabled in vmware , rookie mistake.
Formatted card fine and all is good.
Thanks greatly for the help and time.

Format SD Aps2SD & Paid Apps
Hi,
Sometimes its the simple things that you just can not find an answer too.
Paid Apps remain paid for on Market linked to you Gmail Account log in, so once you set up an account on any rom they will show as PURCHASED under the DOWNLOAD tab and can be reinstalled by clicking on, Easy - I have noticed on some they automatically download and install - not too sure what conditions need be m et for this to work but when I went from Setrom 3.3 to Defrost 2.0 then onto Setrom 3.5 Defrost did not re-install but somehow Setrom 3.5 did - full wipe each time. Odd Now I gone back to Defrost 2.0d and again this morning to Setrom 3.5 - no auto install ?? Oh Well
As for partitioning, back all things up and use Rom Manager to partition card, defiantly the easiest way.
You must of course have rooted your phone 1st, check guide on forum.
Good Luck

Hi all I did the same as BrianMcFly, but used a live cd of peppermint linux. I did the wrong thing (xda forums warns you, but being a Noob, ) and tried to format my 8GB card in my desire, (much badness). Card could not be read in windoze.
Under linux, did a dmesg in the terminal and saw that the partition table was destroyed. Use gparted, set rougly half the card as Fat32 and the other half as ext 3.
Put card back in desire and viola!!, internal memory jumped from 48MB to 127MB. The Rom I am using [ROM-FroYo] Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (16/07 v1.0c | OpenDesire Team) has google Apps2SD, so it obviously saw that the SDcard now has an ext3 formatted partition and moved apps there.
Gparted is not scary, just make sure that you have selected your sd card.
Hope this helps

My experience root and flash : Leedroid 2.3c amazing

Finally after lots of deliberating I rooted my desire and flashed with Leedroid 2.3c.
It is such an easy process and took less than 2 hours including restoring backup apps.
A2sd+ works like a dream and setcpu has appeared to increase my battery life by about 60%.
Best thing is I am no longer facing that stupid low space notification and I have retained use of HTC sense.
I urge all HTC Desire owners who constantly battle with that low space notification to root and flash.

Exactly what i was thinking of doing! how do you partition your SD card?
Yes done this not so long ago, its what the phone should of been like out the box. loving A2SD+ works great, setcpu only just installed it today. am also using LeeDroid superb rom.
I found the easy way was through windows insert your sd card into your PC and download and install EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition, you can get this from download.com. hope this helps

I've been thinking about doing this myself for quite some time now. After your post here, I might finally give it a go in a few hours... after midnight is best for such things
After doing this, do you still lose access to all apps on SD while connected via USB to your laptop? Or is this issue gone due to SD card partitioning? I would like to force-move quite a lot of stuff onto my class 10 Kingston
You will lose everythink sadly, make sure befor you format you backup your photos, vids, contacts stuff like that. apps you have paid for from market can be downloaded again without paying.

Thanks for the help
ext3 best? and also can you set any size?
will the ROM automatically use the ext3 partition when it runs out of space?
I use ext3 am not sure witch is better tho I just went with that. the rom use the partition all the time, like befor I rooted and installed a custom rom my memory was always low, now I have over 100 apps and still have 63MB and 800MB ext3.
I wouldn't go over 1.5GB well thats what Ive been told and read, I just done mine to 1GB 1024mb=1GB

It won't work on Windows Professional machines, which is a bummer as it's a great tool.
I use an Ubuntu Live USB boot and use Gparted. Also lets you easily mess with Windows partitions in ways that make Microsoft feel violated
Also gives you a nice little portable OS and since they made an installer to easily create a persistent state Live USB, it's just a handy tool to carry with you if you fiddle with PCs alot.
Well, it seems like I have to drop this issue for now; I've been trying for more than two hours and I did not succeed using unrevoked 3.3 on Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, Ubuntu 10.4 and Windows 7 x64. I followed all steps, but it only killed some apps on my SD, nothing more.

One time unrevoked wrote: "Is your firmware too new?"
What am I missing? Can this be done?
I had all sorts of troubled using unrevoked until I finally tried it using a goldcard and it went through first time.

Where exactly are you getting stuck. I used win 7 x64. I also was running the you tube video of how to root with unrevoked simultaneously.

I was just able to root it using Ubuntu Netbook Edition and am currently repartitioning my SD card for ext-support. Here we go!
How long does this usually take? It won't stop and my phone won't charge... well I just aborted this and try with gparted.

No. The main difference between a2sd+ script and froyo's apps2sd is that froyo uses fat32 partition to store apps which have been coded accordingly. The script moves all the apps to the EXT partition which does not need to be mounted nor unmounted for it to be accessed by the PC, therefore it won't interfere with your apps in any way any longer.

Try reformat it in the PC using Gparted - if that's not working, Search for USB BRICK and fixing.
If that won't help, then buy a new SD.
Well if thats the case, i will recover al my files with the repair programs i have, and then try to format it..but i was hoping for a way to recover everything without formatting the card..

AmonRa is reliable, but when the card is messed up, it maybe won't work correctly.
I am using GParted for partitioning, easy to use and always works.
Search Developent for tutorial (also with video).

Well I run Gparted live USB, and the weird thing is that even gparted could not see the sd card.
In windows Disk Management it sees the sd card as RAW partition..any clue about the RAW format???
I rescued a lot of my files with other programs but even when they show that the sd card is healthy, windows, linux, android cannot recognize it. The only solution is to format it i think..

sd card not detected on phone or pc

Hey guys,
A friend of mine gave me his desire to root and flash a rom, while I was partitioning the SD card - everything went well (I used a windows app to create the partitions while the desire was plugged in in USB mode.
All went well until I disconnected it after the process was complete - now the phone nor PC detects the card.
What are my options?
Cheers

OK this is unusual, I managed to boot into recovery and mount the SD and sd-ext without any issue - I even booted into a custom rom I flashed from SD, but I still can't get the phone to detect it when booted.

Like rootSU said, try it with GParted in your pc and see if it can find it. If so, format it all and re-partition it.
OK I managed to get it fixed - seemed like an issue with the partition - I used recovery to mount USB storage (it worked) and I re partitioned it and it is now functioning correctly.
Cheers guys and thanks a lot everyone for their inputs !

You're very lucky, its an awful app. I feel so strongly about it, I even put it in my signature (incase you missed it).
I bet its because you used minitool that it broke in the first place.

but, when i mount usb storage it said that "unable to write to umslunfile (no such file or directory)" . and when i format sd card it said "error mounting sd card, skipping format".
my sd card cant detected by any phone or laptop. cant be formatted or mounted. what to do? please help me. there's so much important things there.
Hi there,
Ive been through the same issue just the other day and after read and try lots of things, i had to do something stupid but has worked for me... If you have a digital camera laying around, put your sd card and camera will do its thing..will prompt you asking if you want the sd to be formated... Thats it sd alive and hoping to receive runny rom in my case
hope this works for more people. Take care. Peace.

Try using a partition manager to actually remove the partition on the card, create and format a new one.
If that doesn't work its likely a problem with the write circuitry on the card and time to get a new one.

Thanks, for reply, but how can i do that with windows xp?
Look for a free partition manager tool.
Alternatively and better, download and burn an Ubuntu disk. It can be used to boot your pc into Linux, very user friendly and harmless to your Windows installation. That has a built in partition manager which is very powerful

Or download the live linux distro parted magic
partedmagic[dot]com
burn the iso on CD or use unetbootin (just google it) to create a bootable flash drive.
After starting it, open gparted on the desktop
Beware: Don't manipulate partitions starting with sda (this might be your internal hard drive containing windows)
on PC (XP) you can use free tools from:
- Easus (http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm)
- Minitool (http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html)
If you encounter "write protected" card, it may simply be broken.
I had the same issue with my first 64GB SanDisk micro SD and returned it.
Replacement works fine now.
Same solution here:
- burn Knoppix or Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) on a cd/dvd and boot on restart - format through numerous tools available
- delete partition or try changing drive letter in widows from Device->Manager->Disk Manager
- if write protection continues, try trashing or replacing from vendor
