I was using MIUI a few weeks ago and started having freeze problems with the camera, then my sd card stopped mounting, but I could re-mount it in recovery. Then a day later it was unmountable by my phone or my computer. Does that mean it's dead? Is there any way to get the info off of there?
Thanks!
Have you tried removing it from the device and using the adapter for PC?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
yes indeedy. I tried it in a few different card readers in a few different computers, mac and pc, and a few different phones.
Just curious, if you flash a different ROM, like Virtuous, can you recover items from SD?
Asking, as if SD is dying/dead, an AOSP ROM like MIUI engages the SD during boot, so ultimately you may run into real issues.
Do you have a means to test the SD in another device?
Worst case, maybe visit the Verizon store to ask them if they can pull your info off the old one if are thinking of buying one there.
No, trying it with other roms didn't work. I'm back on stock sense now and it's not readable. I tried it in other devices with no luck.

Hi, so recently my friend gave me his G2 since he just upgraded to the GS3. I wanted to use this for a few months, then buy a new phone myself, but I've run into a problem. I put my 32 GB Transcend class 4 SD card in, and it tells me "Unsupported filesystem, card must be formatted". I didn't want to have to format it, so I took the SD out and put it in my Windows 7 computer, and it tells me I must format it. I didn't want to, but I figured it was my only option, so I tried. The formatting failed, so I tried formatting it with both the G2 and my dumbphone, a Samsung Seek. Neither works. I then tried a 1 GB spare card I had, and same thing happens. It worked just fine with the SD card my friend used in it, so what is wrong with mine? Both cards had worked fine in other devices, specifically an HD2, Droid 1, and Samsung Seek. Can I salvage the cards? Will I be able to use an SD with this phone? Thanks for any guidance.
I'm not expert here, but such behaviour is not standard. If you are using standard ROM without any strange software installed then I would say it's some Hardware failure.
If you have custom recovery, try maybe repartition card in recovery and format in FAT.

It's on the stock ROM from Tmobile, never rooted. I'll try using my sister's phone (rooted w/ custom recovery) to format the card and hopefully save it.
Alright let us know how it goes? Try formatting it in Ubuntu using gparted

Well, not everyone have linux you can try as well on windows gparted software. Nice and simple. And works good.

I had a similar problem on a warranty replacement G2 I got. I found out that the circuitry of the SD card is built into the case of the SD itself. So, if you damage the outside plastic of the SD card, you have the chance of actually ruining the SD card. The G2 I got had a very finicky SD holder and I wound up scratching/bending/warping/"or something" when trying to insert and lock down the card into the phone. All you could see was a little scratch on the SD card but the manufacturer said the card was toast. I think I went through 2 cards on this phone before I returned it due to the misalignment of the card holder/slot in the G2 itself. Now, I'm a lot more careful about getting everything to align instead of just plopping it in.
Every time I flash anything based on the official JB 4.1.1 release, my 32GB MicroSD card (Patriot brand?) freaks out. The phone will say it's "unexpectedly removed" and then adds it back in, and removes it, over and over.
It's happened on all three JB 4.1.1 ROM's I've tried.
I thought my MicroSD was going bad so I low-level formatted it in Windows (hated doing this) and still had trouble. But ONLY with the card in the phone. Windows usually liked the card just fine.
So what I did to resolve it was use Titanium Backup Pro to "freeze" the "MTP Application". After doing that, my MicroSD works great in the phone and AFAIK, I haven't lost any functionality. So I'm not sure what the "MTP Application" is or does, but so far.... so good.
This post is just a heads up to others, in case anyone else runs into this problem.
Or in case anyone wants to tell me WTF is wrong.
Ive had this issue as well twice. Both times I had to format the sd card in my pc and it will work fine for a while. Im curious to know if you are using es file explorer? Im thinking it might have something to do with this issue.

Nope. Never.
Root Explorer + TWRP (if that matters).

Hmm come to think of it I just recently purchased root explorer about the time all this started but surely an app couldn't cause this issue? Heck I dont know it happens so random it hard to pinpoint the problem thats causing it. If I figure it out I will let you know

Ive been trying to duplicate the problem all day with no success. However I have froze the MTP app so maybe thats what the cause is? Would you happen to be using a sandisk micro sd? Because I am..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Ahh hah I duplicated the problem on my phone anyway. I used the my file app to move a rather large file from the internal sd to my external sd and afterwards it lost connection. I had to remove the sd card and install it several times to get it to mount back again. Im not sure if its the moving of the file or the my files app itself that is doing it. I also noticed the media scanner isnt running after moving the file. So I hadnt pinpointed the exact cause but im dang sure getting closer. And I dont think its a bad sd card because I tried another and it did it with it too

You were able to duplicate it even with MTP frozen?
Wow, I have yet to recreate the issue with MTP frozen.
My SD is a Patriot brand. Purchased at Fry's Electronics.

Yea it happened with MTP frozen and unfrozen. Ive tried freezing the my files app and every file explorer on my phone. I just cant put my finger on the cause it happens so random. But it seems me and you are the only ones having this issue so im wondering if we didnt get a bad flash when we updated. When I updated via kies it did not do a full wipe update it did what is known as a dirty flash which I never do because you end up with issues like this. So if we continue to ask each other questions we will eventually figure out what the common link as far as if its an app we are using and things like that.
So did you update via kies or odin?
If you updated via odin where did you get your firmware file file from and if you used odin was it odin on the pc or mobile odin?
And was your update a full or a dirty flash?
We are gonna figure this thing out one day lol.....
Edit.... well apparently we are not the only ones having this issue. Over on droid forums there are several s3'owners most on t mobile but anyway it appears there are a few phones out there with this problem and the only fix is to replace the phone and sd card because the phone ruins the card by unmounting it without stopping it first. My phone is still under warranty so I will be calling ATT tomorrow for them to replace my phone and throw a fit for them to replace my micro sd. I paid 48 bucks for this card and I think ATT should replace it since their faulty phone ruined the card

Wow.
I had the problem with two or three different ROM flashes. So it wasn't just one ROM flash.
Each time, freezing MTP Application has resolved the issue for me.
I'm going on ~4 days now with my current ROM and no more issues since freezing MTP.
Maybe there are a couple different SD card related issues out there.
I had the same problem with ADATA and Kingston brand sd cards. I tried the Sandisk 8GB from my old phone and no problems so far.
Freezing the mtp app has seemed to slow it down. The only problem with freezing mtp is that is how the phone mounts to the pc. Mine just did it again but I unfroze mtp to hook my phone to the pc and right after I backed some stuff up and unplugged it, before I could freeze mtp again it unmounted the card. Ive also tried several different sd cards and several different sizes even tried a 2gb Samsung card with the same results. Im thinking hard about going back to ics to see if that will resolve the issue. ...

I found that my 64GB card was not recognized by the newer kernels - when I use the older kernels or stock, it is recognized, otherwise, the ROM attempts to read the card, and then states it is 'ready to be removed'.

Try reformatting the 64gb card to a fat 32 file system. 64gb cards come formatted exfat and some s3's have had trouble reading them. Put it in a pc into the card reader and open my computer. Then right click on the drive thats showing your card. Ex drive E or F. Mine is drive N. Once you right click on it click format and a box will pop up and you will see the box that says exfat. Click the drop down box and change it to fat32 then click format and your done. Once it finishes put it in your phone and it should recognize it...

Well my 64gb micro sd came today from Amazon and from what ive read on xda and the net I would need to change the file system from exfat to fat32. So I put it in the pc pull up mini tools partition wizard and it gives me no option to format it, I try windows no option for fat32 only ntfs or exfat so I try a couple of others with the same results. Then I try hp format tool and finally format it to fat32 then put it in my phone and it says its damaged and needs formatting so I do and put it back in the pc and im back to exfat. So it seems to only work in my phone in the exfat format soooo im just gonna leave it alone. Oh I even tried formatting it in command prompt and changing the file format and it fails so now im starting to wonder if thats what happened to my old 32gb card and why I suddenly starting having trouble out of it when I updated to jb is because it was fat32. Maybe this new jb dont handle fat32 well or maybe my s3 dont like fat32. Hell I guess its just a mystery. ....
So I would suggest if your having sd issues try formatting your card to exfat and see if that helps the connection issues

Ive searched the forums here as well as google, and find many S3 users facing a Verrrrry similar problem, where their SD card is "Unexpectedly Removed" and then Remounts itself, and the process repeats, causing battery drainage, loss of access to apps etc.. Mostly Related to a SanDisk manufacturing default with certain chips.
My problem however, is slightly unique, in that, mine does not remount itself once it has been "removed". Once physically removed, and checked on a PC, all my files are still there, in working order. Ive Formatted, both "quick" and full format to Fat32, and the card works fine for about an hour to maybe a whole night if Ive done it right before bed. It seems as soon as it starts to be accessed in any way for more than ten minutes, it gets "removed".
Ive tried the following to try and remedy the problem. (Im fairly broke so buying a new card is last resort in my case)
-Both Formats of the card several times.
-Put it in another phone which reads it, format, unmount safely, mount into my phone, and no luck, doesnt even see it
-Factory Reset incase of any bugs in software that may be causing a malfunction of any kind
-Full Wipe X3 + Change of ROM
Im going to be borrowing a friends card for the night tonight, a spare 2GB he has, and see if the phone repeats the error, or if it really is fault of the SD card in question.
Phone Specs
Rogers S3
Running Darth Stalker 4.1.2? and now AoCP_By_The_Collective5.95 4.2.2
Kernel:3.4.53-cyanogenmod-g361781f
SD Card: Lexar 16GB Class 4 Micro SD HC
Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the problem? or does it really sound like the card is at fault? I question this only because the card works elsewhere, and works in my phone for the first little while, with or without files on it, after I format it..
I'll report back about the other card tonight.
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I cant find this problem solved in any way, anywhere :s
Once you report back and if the new card works it sounds like the card. But if the second card fails it sounds like a hardware issue only if you tried different ROMS and kernels and going back to stock by using Odin.

I am experiencing a similar issue, but my pc wont recognize the sd card neither :crying:
Do you know how can I fix it?
thank you
Hey all,
So I've had a bit of a 2 part problem here. I flashed Infamous v3.6 a few weeks back on my S4, and everything has been flawless... Except for 40% of my apps fail to recognize the properly mounted 16GB MicroSD that I have in the phone. So, I attributed this to the ROM not handling the card properly, "oh just a bug in a custom rom". The OS itself, as well as file manager, etc, all see the SD Card just fine. But certain apps won't pick it up, I.E. photo collage apps, hungry shark, etc.
So I downloaded a bunch of ROM's today, going back to AOKP and a different TW ROM, etc. Set them all on my desktop. Stripped all of the files off my External SD Card to clean it up. Thought maybe, before flashing a new ROM, using the reformat SD card that's built into the S4 under options may resolve the issue.
Did the reformat, didn't solve the issue.
Now, I'm trying to xfer my downloaded ROMS to the phone, and the 1.5 gb file completes, but cuts it short ~1.3 GB (no way I'm risking flashing that), but some of my smaller AOKP roms won't transfer.
Spits up the "Cannot Copy Item: The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected" error. This happens when trying to transfer it to the external SD, or internal memory. Gapps/Photosphere transfer just fine (much smaller zips).
I'm wondering:
Does it have to do with the way the card is formatted now and what file partition this rom supports?
That being said, how do I reformat it? Considering MTP/PTP don't support it as a "drive" that is reformattable via PC.
BTW, running Win 8 with the newest Samsung USB Driver.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I can't even flash a new rom since I ripped my older downloaded roms of the SD, and I can't put new ones on
Thanks
Suggestions:
Format the sd card as fat32.
Change usb cable.
Change usb port on the pc.
Try a different sd card.

Tried different ports, and it's a brand new cable for a brand new phone but I'll try swapping that out. What's the easiest way to format it to fat32? Through CWM? I feel like at some point someone in these forums said to avoid partitioning the sd card that way.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
I want to start off by saying that I'm the type of person who likes doing things on my own before i get on the forums asking questions but Ive tried a lot of things and nothing seems to help.
So the issue I'm currently having is my phone doesn't recognize my SD card. When i go into the settings it says that the SD card is empty when in fact it's filled with my original files.
I know it's the phone cause I have tried several SD cards and it wont recognize them. Now if i have the SD card in the phone I can still scroll through the files using some kind of file manager but It wont load the apps on it like it used to. Another thing is if I connect the phone to my PC it will recognize the SD card and the files can be edited ect..
So the few things that i tried doing is removing the battery, removing SD card then inserting them both back in, formatting the SD card (killed my other one trying to format it btw) and still nothing. Wanted to go back to a date where the phone worked but since phone isn't reading the SD card it didn't let me.
Wanted to do a complete whipe so that at least I can get the phone to unrooted state but I'm afraid that the phone wont let me get into the files that are in the SD card to go back to stock ROM.
Don't know if the brand matters but i'll add the brand of the SD card anyways. It's SanDisk 1 GB. My other one that got burnt by some SD formatter was a Kingston. That one didn't work either. These SD cards worked on other phones BTW so i know it's either one the ROM or 2 the hardware.
Either way i have to get it to stock ROM to send it back to T-MOBILE so it can get fixed. Warranty is invalid when your phone is rooted. I am really in a tight situation.
If there is any advice that could lighten my day i'd greatly appreciate it.
Odin stock on it, see if it works after. You'll lose all user data. Also, sd cards fail/get corrupt. Happens all the time.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot to see if it works. Also, bought a SD card manager thing to connect to the computer and when it gets here going to try and see if it has any errors hopefully one of of these 2 things work.
