Unless you never need to charge your phone while driving, it looks like you'd need to find a long power cable, which would make it complicated and awkward to use.
Slick, yes... functional, no. As the previous post pointed out - things like GPS Navigation use crazy amounts of battery power, and routing a power cable through the A pillar and under the headliner just seems stupid when a dash or window mount does the job just as well.
Most cars have some sort of power up between the visors. Usually a light. I tap into the power there for my radar detector.

This actually looks like an awesome solution for my off-road rig. After having phone meets floorboard sessions 4+ times with vent/windshield mounts I'll try just about anything.

just about all cars have 12V power source around the rear view mirror...real quick and easy to tie in and bam, u got power...just curious as to how tight it holds...thought it was interesting and different...
I look at the street that the navigation was showing and its right next to my house.

Ok - forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask this...
I've used the Google Maps and navigation a couple of times now, and it's really good, but I haven't used a cradle with it. I foresee and issue however.
The charging port on the phone is on the bottom most side of the phone, however, for us in the UK, this could prove to be a problem when used in a dashboard mount. In UK cars, the lighter socket which provides power is located in the central console of the car, however, the screen only rotates one way for landscape screen orientation. This means that the charging port is point away from the source of power. In US cars, or EU mainland, this is ideal, but for us in the UK (and other places where you drive on the right hand side of the road) it could prove problematic.
So, the question I have is this.
Is there an app on the market, which enables the screen to rotate both ways - ie anti-clockwise, and clockwise, to enable dash board mounting that's less problematic? I've had a look on the market using the obvious search strings, but so far my searches have been fruitless.
Any ideas?
FWIW - I did a brief google, and by the sounds of things, this issue could be getting addressed in Froyo, hopefully...
but for us in the UK (and other places where you drive on the right hand side of the road)

We drive on the left side of the road in the UK, unless we're drunk
I guess you mean the driver sits on the right hand side of the car.
The nex-desire rom off here rotates 360, yes even upside down lol. It's great if you don't mind losing sense!
Lol - when I meant right I meant "correct" side of the road...
Yes - I also meant that you sit in the right side of the correct as opposed to the left - it means that the phone will sit on the right side of the console which isn't so good for plugging the charger in...
Well, that rather depends on where you site the phone.
I've always had mine roughly directly above the centre console, so the location of the charging port has never been a problem for me.
That being said, I find Copilot very good to use in "portrait" mode, so these days I seldom bother with anything other than a vertical orientation anyway.

Dave
Hi i try to figure out how can i made a DockingStation to X10, couse i need to recharge the phone every day and this makes me angry....the dock and car holder need to be only to charge the phone, nothing else, nothing more...
if someone seen somewhere such thing, or battery what we can use to make this work when please leave post and give ideas.
i find few things:

first is a fake,
second is not very comfortable, i prefer like iphone etc docks
Is the first a fake? I can't read the page but does it come with back plate that's pictured with it? It looks like the one that are aftermarket for the Wii remotes with the rechargable battery packs.

Sorry, how do you define a holder as fake...?
I mean does it only pretend to hold the phone...?
Or every time you turn away it puts the phone down, but picks it up again before you turn back, so you don't actually notice...?
Maybe it holds a different phone, but has a photo of the x10 infront, so it looks like it's holding an x10, but it's actually holding an old nokia
Although gotta say, they're some pretty nice holders... Mind you, the 'fake' one is exactly what you want - notice it gives you a new back + battery so you can actually charge your x10 without having to fiddle with the stupid port on the top... very clever if you ask me...!
What exactly do you meant by charging the phone every day makes you angry - you're still going to have to charge it every day with or without a dock, unless you change your habits (use less / turn it off) - if you just don't like fiddling with the usb port, then the 'fake' one is for you...
why don't you have a look on eBay?
Hm.
The dock looks awful. Nothing for me.
The car holder... I don´t like such car holders, due their size.
I build my own car holder... maybe I will make some photos today...

in other forums few guys say, they cant get it, and the money lost to...couse this they talk about this site or what ...
as u sad, this looks cool, and if someone can get or buy realy, i need it . Yeah,i know we need to charge this devices very often, but it can be easyest way, when plug in phon those microusb sh*ts..and not comfortable, and cant charge and talk in the same time...
I think the best way will be this type of docklets, and with this made car holder, if someone has ideas haw it made, i open for it.Like what kind of electronics we need to charg, and use in the same time, what kind of battery can we replaced the original SE type.
I just maybe can get ideas to make my own docklets, dont wanna disturb or make peoples angry and think and post what wey dont want to use.
I found the second one.

I'm curious, can you upload some pics?
I need to know if you can turn the device on without using the power button.
Can you turn the device on, just by plugging in the charger? I am going to mount one permanently in my car, and need to figure this one function out. It will not be removable, and will be flush with no access to charge port, or power buttons.
If the power is off, and the charger sends a charge to the charger, will it power on on its own?
The Iconia fits my (slightly modded) double-din space perfectly.
Thanks.
Plugging in and unplugging the charger wakes it up. If it's completely off, it doesn't turn it on, only if it's sleeping. I wouldn't suggest relying soley on this to wake it up as everytime the screen times out you'll need to unplug and plug it in, that's a big strain on it.
Ah well. I looked at a breakdown of the tablet and there is no direct access to the power button either, so I guess I'm going to give up completely on this project.
Sucks.
Can you tell me if pressing the reset button while off will turn it on? I may be able to tap into that easier if I open it up.
I have this setup in dash in my car as per my thread (link below)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605571
I have it so the tablet is only powered when the car is on or on the acc position , I keep the screen lock off and use a screen off app to turn it off ...then to wake it I turn the key and it comes on ...I have no problems with the tablet dying overnight .... goes down 10% at the most .....
I have asked ezterry to try to see if he can integrate touch to wake so you would simply have to touch the screen to wake it ....might or might not happen depends if he can figure it out
I would say there are other ways at maintaining power button access and still having it in dash but it depends on how your dash is shaped ....maybe fabing up a sort of slider button in your fiberglass mount or your double din dash adapter .....
Don't give up this is easily the best mod ever ......if you have any questions just hit me up on pm

I would think it wouldn't take much to mod up a simple slide or rocker button to mechanically activate the stock power button through on the dash/mount. Or even to tap into the the switch's connections. I believe it only going to be a 2 pin momentary switch.

Dash won't allow any headroom whatsoever. And it looks like any tablet I fit in there will have the same issue. Ugh. Also, I can leave the car for days without touching it, so the tablet will die often.

I looked at some diagrams and it doesn't seem to be any real access to the power button. I think because it has a light integrated, there isn't just simple switch wiring I can tap into.
I'll be glad to be wrong, I wanted the whole project to be done this afternoon. It sucks because the Iconia fits my cutout perfectly, and I've already modded my Double-Din adapter (which was only $20.)
Can you upload a pic of your adapter ?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using XDA
Agreed.
If the tab is sitting flush in the adapter, the power switch is right there. Even a tiny notch in the mount and you could access the power button with simple lever (ie: a small straight piece of rigid plastic or metal).
Alright this is a rough one so let me start elaborating my predicament.
The phone will charge fine that isn't a problem.
The problem is "Discharging"
from a rough estimate of 100% till about 80% nothing it will say it's "Still Charging" (well showing the lightning symbol, no big deal)
but as soon as it reaches a lower percent (79% Etc.) it will keep making the Screen turn on and off on and off all day until around 14% which makes the battery use more juice having the screen on.
the issue is it believes to be "Plugged" in and "unplugged" consistently to make the screen wake and sleep.
the wake timer is set to the minimum which is 15 seconds, every other action has been taken that I know of,
Settings-Apps-Notifications,
Settings-Developer-Stay Awake
Settings-Sounds-Notifications
and so on,
I just figured heck, i'll root my Nexus in hopes there are additional options to resolve my issue but no Rom I've found allows this unless maybe I missed one that has this feature to turn off the information if the phone is charging, or not.
Thank you for all your brilliant information in the past, this is a new account I've been with the XDA since 09
Last option would be to buy the Nexus 4 but I am to believe it's a 3G only device and I run through Verizon, the only other option would be to keep my unlimited data and buy their phone. any and all advice is appreciated thank you again,
i bet you have the "fingers" inside your usb port touching each other. one might be slightly bent, causing the issue. if they do touch, the device thinks its plugged in.
That makes sense I didn't take that into account. Would I be able to use needle nose pliers and fix it myself or is there a .Command I can program my phone or even an app that will make it so the only time my screen comes on is for the power button?
If I have to I can always just buy the Nexus 4 if that's a smart choice?
Thank you for your wisdom.

you can try a stiff wire, i dont think needle nose pliers will fit. also, you could try cleaning it with alcohol(not to much). the n4 is nice too
I will be traveling from California to New York starting this Saturday. I bought a universal dash mount so I can use my M8 for GPS. What I was wondering, how can I protect my phone from the sun or heat damage? Will having it in a case help it at all? Or will I be ok like it is?
Regards
As far as heat, I wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as the interior of your car is a decently comfortable temperature (running vents or AC, or windows open), your phone should not overheat. I'm just guessing that you don't like to make yourself excessively hot while driving? Anything remotely around room temp will probably be fine. And if you happen to have a phone mount that puts your phone near any AC vents, you will get some extra cooling that way.
I wouldn't recommend leaving the device in a hot car; and you probably wouldn't for security reasons anyway.
In terms of sunlight: in a broad sense, sunlight will breakdown most things over time. Although your car windows block out most UV (windshields more so than side and rear windows, from what I'm reading), which is probably the most harmful factor. Not sure what route you are taking and how long the trip will last. But I'm guessing a few weeks at most. And that degree of sunlight through car windows will probably not have a huge effect, I'm guessing. Plus, the exterior of the phone is mostly aluminum and glass, which aren't terribly UV reactive. The plastic antenna trips are probably the most vulnerable. A case (especially an opaque one) would certainly reduce any damage from sunlight. But may also make the phone a bit warmer (hold heat in).
Another thought, is that using the phone for navigation is very battery intensive. Not sure what app you intend to use. But at least when I use Google Maps (which uses both the GPS function and network data) most car chargers can barely keep up with battery drain. Meaning I hardly get any charging when using navigation. I'd suggest getting a QuickCharge 2.0 car charger (if you don't have one already) as it will charge your phone even when running navigation. Well worth the $15-20 for a QC2.0 charger, to be able to charge your phone quickly since you'll be spending a lot of time in your car; let alone using navigation intensively.

Thanks for all the info, will help for sure. I'll take a pic to show where my phone will be mounted. It gets hit with direct sunlight, and the A/C vents are below the phone that was my concern. I didn't think about the quick charger, I'll pick one of those up for sure. Here is the pic I was talking about. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j17/DemonExecutor1/20150527_072736_zpsvlbkm8wz.jpg

Sunlight, but through the windshield, which filters both UVA and UVB (probably even says this on the glass). Yes, you will also get a bit of light through the side windows; which are usually just UVA protected (not UVB), and the phone may even get some direct sunlight from the side windows rolled down. But I'd say this isn't any worse than most folks setup. True, its a little more direct light than my setup, since you have it on top of the dashboard, where mine is in front of it. But mine is still in sunlight much of the time.
Also, it seems you can point one of the vents up toward the phone, and get some extra cooling that way. It won't be directly blasting the phone, but should still send some cool air in the direction of the phone. Not really a "requirement" but not a bad idea, either.
