[Q] Evo screen discolored - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a replacement Evo in from Sprint and the screen seems to be discoloured. It has a washed out appearance. It looks almost like it has a faded yellow tint to it. I've heard about the Nexus S having an issue similar to this, has anyone heard of an Evo doing this? It is hardware 0003 with newest software. Not rooted no custom ROM.

Question about hardware version and software version.

Long-time Android user here, I have a T-mo MT3G. Rooted long ago and flashed many ROMS.
I also have a Sprint account and am eligible to upgrade so I want to buy an Evo.
The sprint online virtual store seems to be out of stock, but some of the local stores have them.
Can you please give me a strategy for going into the store and walking out with an Evo that is rootable? I read that the latest OTA update has a lock on it that prevents rooting. What should I look for to determine if the Evo they want to sell me is rootable?
Is it even possible? Will they let me boot it to check software version before buying it? Is there any other way to tell?
Also can you fill me in on Hardware versions? I read about light leak and maybe some other problems. What should I look for on the phone to tell which version it is? And what are the differences between hardware versions?
Thank you!
K, there are 3 versions really. 002's I think are all Novatec screens, 003's can either be Epson or Novatec. The Novatec's are prone to the screen separation issue that people have been complaining about and that HTC says is just cosmetic. I replaced my Novatec and happened to get a 003 Epson that did not have the latest OTA update installed.
So, what it comes down to is you ideally want an Epson without the update. There's really no way to tell if it's going to have the update or not without booting it up, and good luck with that in the store because they have to sell it once you open it. If you get one that had the update applied, it's just going to take time before it can be rooted, they're working on it as we speak, you can check out a thread in the developers forums.
The other way to tell if it's an Epson is the back of panel. Check the video to see what I'm talking about. The one on the left is an Epson. Right at 4:07 he starts talking about the "pearlies" on the back. The Epson screen models have a flatter black back, whereas the Nova's have a sort of lighter look to them. I personally like the Epson more, it also feels more "rubbery."
If you buy online, you'll likey get a phone that has the update applied. If you buy from BestBuy you're likely going to get a Nova screen. I think the Sprint stores have the latest inventory, but most of them were shipped on Monday, so today's stock are unlikely to be updated and likely to be Epsons, so that's your best bet.
I exchanged my phone yesterday, got an Epson screen without the update, so I'm happy. Hope this long and exhaustive post helps.

Yes thank you for taking the time to answer! Now all the local stores are out of stock too.
I got one.
Very happy in my pants.
Best Buy was out on Saturday, but today they had three new ones, and I got one with software number 1.32.651.6.
I told the girl not even to open the box, she really wanted to.
When I got home and turned it on it wanted to update to the new OTA, so i said 'NO'!
Lol.
Need to root and check HW version.
NAND rooted, brutal
Wow, that was an experience. This is the third android I've rooted.
It was quite the trying experience. But got it done.
Someone needs to streamline the instructions.
Installed Damage control.
Only took about 4 hours.

[Q] Picking up White Evo 4G tomorrow...question

Hi guys, I've been apart of this forum for a short while, and i've been using an HTC Aria. I decided to finally upgrade and i'm getting a white HTC Evo tomorrow at a great deal $99.99 with a new contract from Sprint.
A member in my family has the black evo and told me that you must downgrade the white evo to 2.1 in order to root it to 2.2
I did some searching and it seems that it is not the case. I was wondering if I could get some feedback from members with the white evo and what the best method is to root that phone. If anyone could confirm as well that there should be no issue rooting a white evo.
Thanks for your time and I hope to be of service in this part of the forum in the future.
-Mike
Thats not the case at all. You can certainly root 2.2. And it has nothing to do with the phone being white or black, they are both exactly the same phone, just different paint.
You are likely to be on HBoot 2.02 or possibly even 2.10. This is the thread you want to check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Read through it carefully before doing anything, it should have all the information you need.
You'll be on HBoot 2.02 and either HW 0003 or 0004. Sprint doesn't sell a lot of white EVOs, so they sit around longer. I know I got mine last week, and it was 0003. My replacement was a Nova screened 0004.
Picked my phone up this morning. It is running HW version 3.0 Going to search for the best root and rom, I want one with optimal battery life as i'm sure at least 90% of users who root their evos do!

[Q] can you root the white Epic 4g Touch

sorry for such a noob question, i just wanted to make sure before saying I Do.. Everything still reads the same as far as EL29 and kernel and everything else. trying to start and business and can't afford a paper weight so i thought, self ask the pro's.. and thanks. oh yeah searched all weekend and still nothing on rooting white epic 4g touch..
From all reports, the EL29 software is the same whether you have black or white E4GT.
It's the same phone, just a different color casing.

Screen problem after 4.1.2 update.

A friend has recently updated her Galaxy Nexus phone to 4.1.2 According to her, the screen is now much smaller with big thick black lines at the top and bottom of the home screen. Ideas on what the problem is, how to fix it?

Hmm thats strange. Is it a ROM? If it is, wipe completely and choose a different one. If its OTA, then I have no idea. That's very strange.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Like what happens when iPhone app isn't optimized for 4 inch screen? That's weird. Never heard anything like that. I personally don't have it, but my friend has 4'1'2 and no problems there
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
that's not right at all... is it stock and updated to 4.1.2 via an OTA? Never heard of that problem.
Problem is taken care of. Until I was able to look at the phone for myself I wasn't able to 'verify' the problem. From what she was saying and what I saw, was two different things. In essence, it looks like the dock bar get's a little larger in 4.1.2 (Yes this is stock, unrooted. Mine is anything but, so I can't compare with hers.) and the shifting of the other icons threw her for a loop. So I installed Nova Launcher and now it looks more like it used to. Plus she loves the idea of having those extra grids and more.
Thanks for everyone's help, but it seems as if it was a false alarm. Gotta love non tech friendly friends.

Multiple Taps Required In Several Apps - Anyone Else Experiencing This?

I'm noticing that I have to tap several times to have the desired effect, select something, in several apps with this phone. Not always but frequently enough to notice. That was never an issue with the same apps on the EVO 3D.
Anyone else experiencing this issue? I'm hoping it's not a problem with the touchscreen.
I've noticed that too. Probably because of LG and their bad programming skills. They remind me of Samsung back when the first Galaxy S came out. (Had the Epic 4G). Hopefully when we get the bootloader unlock, our devs will fix it

I'm hoping that's the case, and that it isn't a problem with their new screen tech.

I doubt it. It's the same technology that is used in the iPhone 5 and HTC Onex.
I am experiencing this as well. I am confident that it is software wise, because like you said, it only happens in some apps. And restarting the app fixes the issue for me as well.
