Hey thanks ptfdmedic.
Turns out I was smart for once and had backed up my stock ROM before I went about changing everything. I just flashed back to that and used buddy323's stock kernel to get it back to good as new.
I have a copy of some of the kernels that were hosted on the ACS website. It's been down for a day or so, so I don't know whats up with that. If anyone needs a copy, send me a PM.
I have been seeing that many people seem to prefer to flash their kernels using CWM instead of ODIN. I prefer using CWM over ODIN whenever possible so here is a solution for you.
This is just a simple .zip that you can use to flash your kernel via CWM.
Myself or the maker of the kernel you're choosing to flash are NOT responsible for anything that may happen to your phone a s a result of user error or anything else.
Instructions:
1) Extract the zImage from the ODIN tar (I use 7zip)
2) Download and open this .zip using 7zip
3) Simply drag and drop the zImage extracted from the .tar or in the root of this .zip.
4) Boot into CWM and flash.
5) Be sure to thank the person that created the kernel you are using.
Note: This will delete the cache so the first boot up will take a minute or so.
PLEASE make sure there isn't a reason the kernel creator wants the kernel flashed via ODIN before doing this. I don't know if there really is one but just in case.
Update: Zip updated per Calkulin's advice
Enjoy....
No offense but I believe people are interested in using zips without using a computer period.
I know I would. I have no problem using odin but would love to simply use recovery.

Speak for yourself and not others. Also, a little research and effort on your part would show you that you should be able to accomplish the same thing on your phone to get the zImage into the zip for flashing in CWM.
Thanks Rob.
Thanks rob you've done it again

thank you very much!! i wasnt AWARE you could just extract the zImage from tar.

On that note some of us like to experiment with different kernels on the go so having a library of .zip kernels saved to my sd card is brutally useful instead of having to wait to get home to switch the kernels

Guys,
I'm not sure if I really understood it... I found a boot.img from a rom that is not from the rom I'm currently using...
Just double checking, to flash it, all I have to do is put the "boot.img" file inside the "Generic Kernel ZIP for CWM.zip" and flash it through CWM?
Is this only for Epic 4G or it will work on SGW as well?
I'm sorry if this is something obvious, it's just that it sounded too simple, easy and good to be true...

Every kernel ive seen has a .zip and a .tar.. but i guess if you want to do it this way its fine lol.. if on ics its more steps and youd still need to odin to el26 cwm to be safe anyways.

I don't get it... if you are going through the trouble of pulling zImages why wouldn't you just Mobile Odin or HC-kTool it?
Just sayin.. live and let, I suppose.
And if I'm not mistaking, boot.img is for AOSP kernels and zImage is for stock-based. Correct if necessary.
Yeah yeah yeah.... I'm a noob. I need your help who ever you are. Im just trying to replace the original boot animation. I download the new boot and put it in system/media and rename and have even moved the old bootanimationloop.whatever. still wont work. Again, im a noob so please explain what i have to do in lamens terms. If you could show me on a video, even better. much appreciation.
Ok first what kernel are you on?
Also are u renaming the animation to sanim.zip with making sure its all lower case?

Ok thanks. Just wondering. I like the stock interface, but don't want to use the stock ROM until I know root wont get borked with a OTA update.
I have TWRP so I would think even if i did get an OTA update though I could just boot into TWRP and flash CM7 or something. Am I correct in thinking this? Or could an OTA update kill TWRP too?

Sorry for the noob question. I've flashed roms with clockworkmod hundreds of times, but can someone please give me a set of step by step instructions on how to install this properly? I'm not familiar with teamwinrecovery, but I do not see the kindle fire on the list of supported devices. thanks

Basically the same as clockworkmod. Backups/Nandroid is the same premise, wiping partitions prior to flashing works the same. A how-to definitely exists. A simple google search yielded this post which should answer any questions you have. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414626

I don't understand why anyone would need to see pics of a rooted stock rom. It looks the same as a stock amazon kindle fire rom.
[Edit] I didnt see at first that it's got ADW built in... so I guess if you haven't seen ADW before then maybe pics are useful [/edit]
This is great Biff. Just what I was looking for. Thank you for this
---Jay---
I know this sounds dumb, but TWRP will NOT recognize this zip for some reason. I can see every other ROM in my root directory, but I just can't get it to show this ROM in the Install section. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm not new to this in the slightest but I'm stumped.
*edit* Nevermind. Renaming it fixed it.
Is this the Biff from the G1 days?
Just a side note. Not sure if you care but changing the wallpaper crashes the app trying to change it. I was able to change it using Themes for ADW Launcher but they reset back to the Amazon ones.
I wont be using this but always like to congratulate devs on there work! Good job! Keep up the good work!

Yes. You can set one for default if you like. If you set one and decide you want to change, just go to manage applications and clear the defaults for that launcher.

I'll see what I can do for you
Edit: No idea if this is going to work. Samsung has a proprietary file format for boot animations so I don't know if this will even work. That being said, you'll need to check /data/local for any old boot animations, then check /system/media for any old ones, then delete those first. Then reboot into recovery and try flashing this. Once again, I have no idea if this will work, so flash at your own risk. I would try it but I'm on stock right now.
If it does work, it will only work with stock AT&T Stock Roms. You shouldn't have anything to lose. If it doesn't work, delete the two files in /system/media that it flashes and I'll do my best to get you something here soon. I have an exam tomorrow so I might not be able to get ti to you immediately.
http://www.mediafire.com/?1z4lmflvq5a1gtv
Edit 2: I found the files from the proprietary format already extracted somewhere. I changed the text file for 720x1280 resolution so this should "theoretically" flash on any rom with custom bootanimation support. Try this one first. I have excluded the sound file for this one.
http://www.mediafire.com/?fa6a3rl7mkkz018
Last but not least, here's a stock AOSP Jelly Bean boot animation from the Galaxy Nexus that I made, tested, and use in case you decide you want something else that's more stock-android. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1888848

Alright give me some time and I'll edit it and see what I can do for you
Edit: Okay my friend you should be good to go. I figured out the issue and this should fix it for you. Let me know if you have any more issues. This animation will flash on any 720x1280 phone. Just flash from recovery as you did before. I don't know if I can locate the sound for you, but if you really want I can try to find it. Hope you enjoy!

Weird, this is making me pull my hair out. I've made several boot animations and I can't figure out why this one is going crazy. I'm going to send a few messages to have someone review my work and make sure I'm not making some sort of stupid mistake. I'll try uploading 1 more time and you let me know what happens. I think I may have found the issue but I'm not sure. Oh well here you go:

I will flash smartguy's kernel again to test this out. My txt file with configuration is exactly the way it should be...if anyone has any ideas please throw them out there.
What I did part 1: Go to /system/media and make sure bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg are both deleted or moved to another location. Still experiencing issue that you are with stock UCALH9 and the unlocked kernel. Still hearing audio from boot animation. The animation is not looping the way that it should. After deleting those files, the animation plays, but does not move on the part1 folder to loop the image like it should. I've tried one of my other boot animations and it works just fine. It might take me awhile but I'll figure this out. I'm really busy with school right now and I will try to finish it when I can.
With the inverted one on koontz kernel I get a blank screen
