[Q] HTC Desire. Available memory is under 70mb alltime. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone ( HTC Desire ) have become very slow. It takes ~3 seconds to open Advanced task killer. It says that available memory is always under 70mb. Even with only Juiceplotter and Advanced task killer. It was before ~150mb.

Uninstall ATK! Restart and it will be much faster (apps will remain in memory!!!)...

have you thought about rooting and using a custom rom?
I now use Oxygen rom on a rooted desire with S-OFF and a custom partition - all of that is not too tricky to do... I have about 275MB free on internal storage even with all my apps (no apps on SD).
You will find excellent tutorials on all these mods and more on this site!

How to clean the cache (globally) in the internal memory?

I think I should clean the cache a bit, i tried to uninstall some apps but maybe it isn't enough. The Android market is unable to download new apps while BlackDroid still works

I have the same problem, i installed quite a few appz and then removed them, now out of memory from left over installs and not half the appz as orig installed.
I'm interested in finding out this as one. This utility is badly needed.
Don't know how long before we will be able to choose location where to install appications i.e., ofcourse SD card.

We need it rooted fpr apps2sd, but still waiting so we must just be patient.
I don't know if it's the same thing you're talking about, but you can clear the cache from the recovery menu.
This does not require root:

But you cannot clear all caches at once. Still handy though.

Awesome find gogol, very handy indeed, less time consuming... would like to see a clean all feature though!
EDIT: Unfortunatly, Android does not offer the possibility to delete data of other applications (on unrooted phones) for security reasons ... the only way to clear an application cache is to call a system application which is allowed to delete it, that's the reason why several caches can't be cleared with one click, just like with this application.
Alternatively, instead of installing such an app, you can practically achieve the same results by going to settings>apps>manage apps
then menu and sort by size
the top 3 or so you can quickly clear and be done.
A quality utility, thanks
Ok I done a factory reset and gained 128 meg Install lots of appz and still have over 90meg free

Low internal phone storage

I just got a notification that my internal phone storage memory is low (10mb left). My phone is only a few weeks old and I've installed maybe 20 apps, and I'm using the stock Telstra rom. I don't recall putting any large files or anything like that on my phone, I put all my photos/music/etc on the SD card. Is this normal? I have A LOT of apps installed on my Hero and I don't remember it ever having a problem with the internal memory.
Also, is there a way to install apps to the SD card? Or is it really only possible to have about 20 apps installed at a time before you have to delete some to make room for new ones?
The reason your Hero's internal memory doesn't run out as quickly as the Desire's is because the Desire's OS files are simply larger. I'm guessing this has something to do with the screen resolution being higher resulting in larger image files.
Anyway, if you want to install applications to SD card, you have 2 options:
1. Root
2. Wait for official Froyo update from HTC
Tips to free up some memory
Go to "Settings" > "Applications" > "Manage applications" > press "Menu" key > "Sort by size"
See what applications are taking up the most space and re-evaluate each application's worth to you. See if there's any one that you don't actually use so you can uninstall it.
Clear cache. The browser ,photo viewer, and maps comes into mind as applications that use up a lot of space for cache.
Soft reset your device occasionally. Doing so apparently initiates some sort of cleanup process. I've consistently recovered chunks of internal memory by simply doing an occasional soft reset. (Note: You'll need to shut down and and then restart. Doing the hardware key-combination or yanking the battery won't work)
Thanks. Is there an official Froyo update planned for anytime soon? Also how do you clear the cache?

Official word from HTC PR is Q3 for official Froyo update. Every other rumor you hear about it coming "in 2 weeks" is unsubstantiated. See following link

To clear cache got o "Settings" > "Applications" > "Manage applications". Go into the application you want to clear cache for. If you're allowed to clear the cache, the "Clear cache" button will be active.

I have a Hero with 1.5 and the 2.1 update was supposed to happen 6 months ago and still hasn't. So based on that, if they're announcing a 2.2 for the Desire in Q3 2010, I'm guessing it'll actually come out around Q2 2011. I guess I'll just have to uninstall some stuff

finally thinking about rooting.help please

hi everyone
finally thinking about rooting i have a htc desire 2.2 but internal memory is becoming a problem
but i need to know the benefits?
will i able to remove some stock apps?so that internal memory is freeed up?
will apps2d able to move all apps to sd card?
what else will i able to do?
can i install a stock froyo rom without sense for my desire?im sure that would free up some space?
Yes, yes, yes and yes If you want all of the above, you can get it by rooting.

how much memory free do you have on your desire?
does apps2sd move the entire application to sdcard or just the data?
This should not be in the Development forum, should've gone in Q&A
I have 100 mbs left after installing about 20 apps and a couple of games. Apps2sd will still use a bit of internal memory, but most of it goes to the sd.
EDIT: This is with ~30mb taken up from adobe flash and air on internal.

one thing im wondering
how come you guys are getting 140mb +- free with apps installed?
where did the space come from?
If you root your stock ROM then yes you can then use adb to remove system apps. The issue is they're not part of the internal storage but on a seperate system partition. This means removing them won't add space to downloaded apps
If you want to install hundreds of pointless, needless apps** then you're going to need a custom ROM which uses A2SD+ - LeeDroid is one example but I personally prefer either an MCR ROM from MoDaCo or the Desire HD port (RCMixHD). Both also extremely good ROMs
** This is my personal opinion, I don't use my Desire as a replacement for every other device I own so have no need to use excessive ammounts of apps

Tks
I don't have alot of apps
Maybe 20
Problem is copilot, flash, air, google maps etc
They take up alot of space, I'm not trying all apps
S-OFF then remove using root explorer
I have 69MB free with the following updates/apps installed:
1. Facebook (Update)
2. Twitter
3. Angry Birds (on SD Card)
4. Adobe Flash (Update)
5. Google Maps (Update)
6. Gmail (Update)

9. Street View (Update)
10. App Manager
11. Dolphin HD Browser (on SD Card)
12. YouTube (Update)
13. EStrongs File Explorer (on SD Card)
So, for me, I don't NEED to root. I still do to try a new ROM if it's something that appeals but I love Sense - stock Android is so fugly
Hi,
If you're using Android (Froyo) you can I believe move, some, of the apps an data to the SD card using your existing ROM.
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications.
Look at the downloaded apps and highlight one, it may or may not give you the option to move to SD card. The ability to move to SD is dependent on the Application developer in question. Hence, this doesn't work for all applications and data.
There are also some Market Apps that can scan the list for you, I tried "App 2 SD" by Sam Lu which seemed to work for me.
Regards.

Because you don't have a lot of space in the first place. If you want more then you have no option other than to go with a custom ROM which uses A2SD+

Internal memory disappearing

Ive had the following issue ever since I got my desire, but only now starts to irritate me.
Whats happening is that internal memory disappers randomly. For instance, when I have 30mb free space and I install an app of 4mb, Im left with 26mb of course. The weird thing, however, is that when I uninstall the 4mb app, I do not get back up to 30mb of free space but rather something like 28. Where has the remaining 2mb of memory gone to?
Additionally, when I start the day with e.g. 30mb free space, it can spontaneously jump down a couple of mb's at the end of the day (one minute I have 30mb, the next I have 27mb). Mind you, this is without touching the market and installing/uninstalling apps.
It only started bothering me today, because I had uninstalled quite alot of apps last week to have 30mb of free space, but only have 22mb of free internal memory at the moment of typing.
If anyone could help me out or could shed some light on this issue, I would be very grateful.

I think this has to do with the dalvik cache. But I am not sure. Overall, I would say: When you do not have any problem with installing/uninstalling apps or other things, do not bother about it.
Ok, thank you. If I did want to delete it, I would probably need root?

What do you want to delete?

Most applications have 3 parts that occupy storage space: Code (.apk), Data (user settings and preferences) and Cache(some images etc downloaded during previous sessions).
When you uninstall app, the data and cache are removed immediately. But for some apps, the .apk file is retained. It is sometimes removed after rebooting phone, sometimes immediately, otherwise not removed at all.
Use a file explorer like ES File explorer to check if you find the .apk file somewhere. To search quickly, connect phone to computer in mass storage mode, and search the mounted usb drive using usual windows\linux file search.

I have a htc desire stock orange uk, S-OFF, rooted.
download Link2sd (you have to be rooted)
With link2sd all I did was use Ubuntu and gparted to partition my 8gb sd card the 2nd partition set at 1024mb and the rest all together and both FAT32, as on the market app info it says ext2, ext3 etc etc can only be used with a custom rom.
hope this helps
This has been a life saver went from 17MB free to Nearly 60MB!!!!!
Also if you suddenly wondering why your memory disappears, try changing the amount of days email you have on your phone in each email account setting. Have mine set at one day. If you really need to get an older email you can just change it whenever and send and receive.

Internal Memory Question

My Wildfire (Original not the "S") has RAM: 384 MB according to the user guide and Wikipedia.
I'm running CyanogenMod 7 (Android 2.3.7) - I presume that this OS is stored in ROM.
However, when I go to manage applications it shows me that I have used 122Mb and have 53 Mb free Internal Storage
This means that there is 175Mb available in total.
Where is the rest of the RAM being used please? I'm confused!
That's not the RAM memory.
That's the internal memory.
The one in which your apps are saved in......

yes and if you want to rise your internal memory you might want to look at "custom mtd partitions" (link in my sig)
You could also move your apps (and/or dalvik-cache) onto an ext partition of your sdcard. But this will need a bit more tweaking and reports if that's a good thing vary widely (might depend on your card's speed, the r/w speed set in the system, the ROM you use etc)
Done the custom mtd partition thing - now have more space!

I've done the mtd partition thing. It's a very easy process.
I now have 310Mb Total internal storage with 145Mb for the ROM and 10Mb for the Cache.
Thanks very much for the clear and simple instructions
Will reducing the cache (from 40Mb to 10Mb) slow down the operation of the apps at all (opening, running etc)?

Oh well, I've flashed my radio a lot of times (once initially after rooting because of the well known GPS issue and recently a few times because of those 3G reboots) and I didn't notice any problems. I have exactly the same specs (just 10MB cache)...
Furthermore it has been mentioned a lot of times (also in the Custom MTD thread) that CM7 has a bind script whicht lets the system use the whole free space on the data partition if it runs out of space for cache. Although I have no experience with non CM ROMs (especially the sense ROMs) I'm quite sure that you need a bigger cache partition when flashing sense ROMs - but in this case custom mtd partitions don't make sense anyway.

strange... but like I said: that script is a CM7 thing, no idea if it exists in other ROMs, too. Scratch did mention that he once found out that the script wasn't working (or missed) and he got problems with large files. Furthermore I have all apps and dalvik on sd-ext which makes it almost impossible to run out of free space in data. If your system partition has been much bigger than 145MB and you had a lot of apps installed that could make that bind script almost useless. Otherwise I have no idea why it did work for me (and others) while it didn't for you. Probably some other settings/tweaks I'm using, no idea...
GPS issue - advice needed please?
Wasimk32 quoted eventcom who states that CM7 has a well known GPS issue. I'm sure that I have this. I've done the following on my Wildfire so far:
1) Debranded
2) Rooted and S-off
3) Flashed to CM7
4) Altered partition to 145Mb ROM storage and 10Mb cache.
Now when I use Google Navigation, I see the marker for my car travelling along the roads in plan view but the message at the bottom says "Searching for GPS..." and I get no voice prompts.
Can you please direct me to a fix for this well know issue?

hm, I'm not sure - if your icon moves in Google maps it looks like your GPS works - what about the GPS icon in the status bar: does it become steady after a while or does it blink the whole time?
And don't misunderstand me: it is a well known issue but as far as I know it doesn't apply to the majority

May be the lack of free space on data partition didn't let me flash radio.I flash a new rom every 1-2 days, after every install i restore 50+ apps from TB which leaves me with 4-5mb free space on data partition.I hardly move my apps to sd-ext.
Now,this means i always have approximately 12-14mb free space(free space on cache+free on data).
maybe i need 10-12mb more free space to flash something like radio, isnt it ?
I will try flashing a radio with more free space and see if it works.

I get the Google Navigation icon in the status bar but no GPS icon. Other icon work in the status bar like Bluetooth and wireless but not GPS
However If I navigate to Menu > Settings > Location & Security
I have the Use GPS satellites option checked and also "Use wireless and/or mobile networks". I also have GPS source set to "Use Internal GPS"
Am I missing something?

well, that pretty much looks like your GPS indeed isn't working. You could verify by disabling "other location services" (not sure about the label but it should be under location & security). Google Maps should show a notification that it can't determine your location (presuming you're not inside a building). Even better: For testing and measuring your GPS I recommend to install GPS Status & Toolbox from Google Play it's the most helpful I know of
If so you can try to fix the problem by flashing your current radio again (because that's the newest one) or, if that doesn't do, a different one or - if that also doesn't help - your current one again after flashing the older one. In most cases I know of this helped (I did only flash the newest but to be honest I don't remember which one I had before...).
To do so you have to flash a CWM 2.5.x recovery due to the fact that amend scripting isn't supported anymore by newer CWM versions.
Go to [REF/GUIDE] [29/07] The Complete Wildfire Index scroll down to "6: Custom Recoveries" where you'll find a description of the 4 different methods to flash a custom recovery. Choose the one you feel most comfortable with - I personally prefer method 3.
You could also flash a temporary recovery (just for the next reboot) via ROM manager - but I don't trust this method so I did never try it...
Stay in the thread and look for "4: Radio List". Pick the one you want to flash and put it onto your sdcard's root. Boot into recovery, flash it and reboot.
Give the GPS some time after reboot as it probably has to download agps data etc etc - better use GPS status instead of maps to check
