Hey, I'm a novice when it comes to phones but I've been talking with a friend about rooting my phone and I want to do it now.
HTC Desire Z (Non Branded)
Android 2.2.1
Build Number: 1.72.405.2 CL296256 release-keys
He gave me the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
and said to ask on here, if that is the right guide to follow and well I have no idea what ROM's are ideal for me, there are too many roms to choose from and because there is a load of jargon what quite frankly confuses the hell out of me.
I just kinda want a rooted one with less junk and more options (like the rooted apps to install) maybe? I'm a lost puppy
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I don't know how I can thank you if you can help me
Use the wiki to get root and the added extras (subsidy unlock),... then you'll be good to go flashing ROMs.
As for which ROM, I recommend Cyanogen 6. 1 for stability . But as a new user I do think you should try a sense ROM for a while.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Just root your phone and then you will be able to install apps that require root, and you can remove apps you don't want.
Stay on the stock ROM then you can get used to it, and you'll be in a better position to learn which custom ROM might suit you.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
My recommendation is CyanogenMod (6.1.1 for stability, as suggested above).
I have been using CyanogenMod since the G1 (two years ago) and haven't looked back. The development team is constantly striving to improve, and add features. The thing is rock solid stable, and has MANY MANY more options and goodies then stock rom.
Use that wiki to get you Rooted, then head over to the Cyanogen Wiki (link in my signature) to get his rom, and instructions on how to install it.
The HARDEST part, will be the physical rooting of your phone. After you have rooted, the SIMPLEST thing to do is to download "ROM Manager" from the android market. Use it to install the Clockwork Recovery (VERY EASY, all done through the app). Once you are rooted and have a custom recovery, popping on a Rom is a piece of cake.
The very FIRST thing you should do after rooting and getting a custom recovery, is to BACKUP (usually referred to as nandroid backup). This will make COMPLETE backup of your phone, as it is now (boot/system/apps/contacts, etc etc, EVERYTHING). Then if during the process of putting on a rom or mod, something messes up, you can always restore your backup. Make this a COMMON practice.
If you do decide to go with Cyanogen, some things to remember. One is to get the "gapps" package, so you will have your market, and gmail, etc etc.... That step is included in the instructions on the wiki, so you shouldn't miss it. Just install gapps, after Cyanogen.
Now, if after all that, you feel confident (and by this point you probably should), you could look at getting a OC/UV (overclocked/undervolted) kernel. This is also done with ROM manager, and is VERY easy. Id suggest using pershoots kernel, for CM 6.1.1 (froyo)..... This will not only improve the performance of your phone (with the app SetCPU), but will also save battery life.
It may sound like a lot, and maybe it is, but again, once you get past the Rooting, and flashing a custom recovery (most common is Clockwork), the rest is a piece of cake, comparatively.
Is it worth all that hassle you may ask? YES, DEFINITELY. Once you get used to CyanogenMod (or whichever mod you choose), you will have a hard time ever going back to a stock rom. When i purchased and received my G2 (US version of the Desire Z), i literally had it out of the box, booted up for 5 minutes to login, shutdown, and began rooting it. I simply HAD to have my Cyanogen.
If you just want a rooted one with less junk and the option to install rooted apps, maybe you should just root your phone but continue using the stock ROM? You can still get a great deal of customization on stock just by using market apps like launcher replacements, root explorers, tasker..
I'd suggest watching videos of the ROMs on youtube so you know what to expect from each. Personally i'm using Virtuous ROM but that's because i like the look and feel and added functionality of HTC Sense (camera, facebook tagging, dlna, etc).
I have an Incredible that I have rooted with unrevoked. I rooted it after I received the ota update with froyo and have done nothing else. I have yet to put a rom on since I really don't want to download and install all of my apps again and tweak my preferences. All that being said I want to do some things to customize my phone and have read about other ways to customize with roms, what things am I able to do? Here are some of the things I would love to be able to do to my phone:
Color Notification Icons - Is there a way? I tried one months ago and my phone crashed so I had to do a nandroid restore.
Change Lockscreen - Is there a way I can change the slider? Different color or something?
Blue Theme - I'd love to change all the places that are green to blue, such as when dialing or navigating around on the phone.
Is there anything else you guys have done to your Incredible that sets it apart? I really love to customize and tweak things to make it my own. Thanks for reading and helping out guys.

This is easiest to do using CM6/7 and applying a theme pack
Change Lockscreen - Is there a way I can change the slider? Different color or something
> Not many customizations have been made to the HTC lockscreen. You can find a few metamorphs for VANILLA lockscreens to make it look like the Droid 2 / R2D2
Blue Theme - I'd love to change all the places that are green to blue, such as when dialing or navigating around on the phone.

Minimalistic Text Widget & Launcher Pro are your friends
I also LOVE sonnysekhon's themes for CM7.
Good luck, have fun, nandroid, rinse, repeat

Forgot, you aren't deodexed.... you really need a custom rom to be able to theme. If you want a stock sense you should look into virtuous... its pretty much stock, looks stock but is still custom. Then you can flash themes on it.....
A little off topic, but since I want to learn...
What exactly is deodexed? I remember moving *.odex files from system apps I didn't want after I rooted.
And that's a bummer, I'd hate to have to install all of my apps again after flashing to a new rom. I have looked at both Virtuous and Vanilla in the past but didn't want to deal with all of the extra work afterwards. I'm unsure what CM6/CM7 is, I'm about to google it.
Is there anything I am able to do besides what I've mentioned?
Try flashing virtuous without wiping data, just wipe caches. like I said before, that's pretty much a stock sense rom. You should be ok and not need to re set up your stuff. If not, restore nandroid.

If your main concern about trying out ROM's is having to re-download all of your apps, I have an app for that
Titanium Backup
Super simple. It lets you back up the apps you downloaded. Here's what you do:
1. Download Titanium Backup from the market
2. Individually back up your apps using Ti - WARNING! DO NOT BACK UP SYSTEM DATA. Also don't back up Gmail/Maps/anything stock that's going to be in the new ROM. Titanium shows items in red that you shouldn't back up, so it shouldn't be too hard. Rule of thumb: if you downloaded it yourself, back it up, if not, stay away
3. Download your new ROM and put it on your SD card
4. Wipe
5. Flash new ROM - FYI CM7 stands for "CyanogenMod 7" which is a really popular AOSP ROM
6. Sign in with your Google account/Facebook/etc.
7. Download Titanium backup > Batch > Restore apps
You're going to have to click "Install" for every app you backed up if you've got the free version, the paid one does it for you.
You're also going to have to do your other tweaks (ringtones, autorotate, etc.) manually as Ti can't do that, but I think it's well worth the initial time investment to get a better/faster/more customizable ROM
TL;DR: Titanium Backup backs up your apps. If you want customization, you need a new ROM. If you want Sense, SkyRaider 3.5 or Incredibly Re-engineered 2.3.1 is best for customization (both have blue themes available), but Virtuous gives you the most "stock" feel. If you want AOSP, can't do much better than CyanogenMod7 for theming
EDIT: In response to your original post...
Colored Notifications are only going to work on a deodexed ROM (aka Virtuous/SkyRaider) - there is a rooted/deodexed stock ROM floating around that rmk40 posted (he also created Virtuous)
WidgetLocker is a paid app that can change your lockscreen - and here's a really popular app on modding the stock options it gives to your liking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825553
Cyanogenmod7 or CM7 is basically one of the most badass roms available, it's not only the newest of the cyanogenmod series but it's also built off of android 2.3 Gingerbread, so no having to wait for the actual legit GB release like everyone that's not rooted. If you want to see it in action look for it on youtube, otherwise to learn about it go to cyanogenmod.com or cyanogenmod.com/forums, everyone there is very helpful. I am running the RC1 of CM7, there is a few nightly builds after that so far but I'm just gonna stick with the first release canidate until RC2 hits.
I'd say the main reason I rooted was to try out different ROMs. I know you said you want to leave all your preferences and apps untouched, but I quickly got over that. I got all my contacts organized in GMail so that they sync every time I flash a new ROM. Each ROM has different preferences to play around with. For apps, I realized what I needed to do was just choose a few really important ones so I wouldn't have to spend all day setting up my apps for each new ROM.
I'd recommend doing a nandroid backup in recovery and trying out a few different ROMs. Try MIUI and Cyanogenmod 7, they're great. When your done you can restore your nandroid backup and get back to exactly where you are right now.
If you decide you want to stick with a new ROM, you can use Titanium Backup to restore your important app data, like someone else pointed out.
Once you're rooted there is a whole new world of opportunities...have fun!
Ok you guy's have got me very interested now. I think I want to move forward now! That cm7 looks great and I'd love to move to gingerbread. I was curious since this is the nightly beta release if I could later get the updates without flashing a rom again and restoring my apps. I had also heard I would have to flash more files like the radio after the install too. I'll have to read more on this.
Use Titanium Backup for all your apps and their data where you can put them all back on your new ROM.
You can do a full backup via Clock Works so if you don't like the new ROM or don't want to deal with any more of this new stuff then you can revert exactly to where you were before.
> For the lockscreen you can uninstall the lockscreen and then the default android one will be there.
To change the main look and feel you can try Launcher Pro from the market. It's pretty sweet. I use it with my custom ROM just because I love the cube transition and how you can hide a lot of the useless apps in the app drawer.
If you dont want to load a custom rom but would like to just theme there is a deodexed completely stock rom around here that will give you that option. All you need to do is flash in recovery and since you are going from a stock rom to another stock rom you do not need to wipe/clear anything so all of your apps and settings will remain intact.
you can consider just flashing skyraiders 3.5 and then not doing anything fancy. It's very close to stock with little improvements around so you might find that to be a good start.
Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions guys. For right now I think I am going to wait for a stable release of CM7 before I flash a rom. I really want Gingerbread but not an unstable release of it. I am looking at LauncherPro now and thinking of checking out ADW. I've watched some different videos on both, which do you guys think is better?
I also did one mod I'm happy about, I changed the market app to the themed "Black Market" with the different icon and appearance. I think I am going to look for some transparent apps next to do something different. I with there was more I could do with my stock rom, it sucks not being deodexed. Anything else worthwhile to look into?

CM7 is incredibly stable for only being at RC1....
I use it everyday now (Occasionally flashing something for fun) and I have NO problems with it.
If you flash CM7 RC1 you won't regret it. Just my two cents.
How long would anyone guess the final release will take? I think I am just going to keep an eye on it's progress and eventually switch. While it may be working well now I just feel uneasy about flashing that rom now, even though I can restore a backup. I'm having some fun now customizing my phone with Launcher Pro. I certainly like the customizable dock over the Sense dock. I'm trying to search for mods I can do with my non-deodexed rom but not too much luck. Thanks for the thoughts everyone!
I used to be like you so just as some insight from someone who remembers being where you are. Don't worry about cm7 rc1 or the newest nighlys, they're very stable. Although for a stock sense experience, one fun rom I've found to be fun and really have me flashing back and forth with cm7 is incredibly re engineered. With Chad's kernel its super fast, battery efficient and stable.
So ymmv but cm rc's are generally pretty stable. And incredibly re engineered is also a great choice

ok i am a noob and just like the guy before i am rooted and using hydra oc kernal but stock rom froyo 2.2 and preaty much same reasons as the other guy for not flashing a rom yet. i think my main problem is just not quite sure of all the details yet. someone mentioned making a backup through clockwork i did that, chose the backup and restore option, but not sure what all this actualy backs up...everything? or just parts, and also little hazy on the kernel/rom workable combinations... how do you know which ones can be used together and which will brick or what ever may be the consiquencess, i only have had my phone little over a month, so i still working up my courage too. gained some today my wife's got same phone and had hers rooted with same kernel, and needed to return it cause having sms, and call issues. i was able to return hers to stock and s-on. so that really boosted my confidence, i know alot of it is just brute force reading to learn but i never was much on long reads, so i usualy read other peoples mastakes and not do that and try everything else in time... kinda of an ass-backwards way of doing it but does tend to cut down on the reading...lol so any tips you want to throw at me i am listening...
funny i just found that htc had a phone named Thoth, but i guess it was canceled or something...to bad liked the name...
well thank you all in advance!

i have never installed any custom rom yet.. i just saw cyanogenmod 7 was released and stable... heard it's the best rom out there... but is it worth installing it over htc desire's stock rom? i am starting to have some performance issues as i haev installed tons of apps on my desire.. will the performance be better on cyanogenmod 7?

yes, it is worth it but it does not have sense so if you are a fan of it you might want to flash leedroid
Define "performance".... apps opening faster? yes. Keep in mind, you will have a new launcher.
Battery life? Definately. I have about a 90% battery life improvement over my stock Desire ROM. Keep in mind, my phone is an east european model, compared to branded phones in the US, which means I didn't get bloatware installed.
Also, when you upgrade to CyanogenMod7, you can install setcpu, and overclock your processor. In addition, I run profiles to throttle back the processor speed if the battery reaches a certain percentage.
I can run, normal usage (without films) at least 2 days without recharge.
I run their RC3, just can't seem to think why I should update to their "stable" version. The only noticable thing I see, is that screen brightness doesn't seem to hold (get brighter). But a tiny annoyance.
Also, I would suggest updating the normal way to 2.29 first. I'm not an android programmer by any means, but have heard it also flashes the radio version, which can be important when flashing custom ROMs.
CyanogenMod has put tons of work into their ROM. Probably more than anybody out there. You won't be dissappointed.
There are a couple of other good ROMs out there as well. Oxygen, Gingervillian, and Muiu (spelling). But I only read about them.
If you have any problems, please ask BEFORE you brick your phone.

Yeah, forgot about sense, but really, I don't see much of a difference between running stock HTC and CyanogenMod.
Or maybe I am ignorant (staring at too many posts for too many days)
Sense has left me......
i am tempted for the battery life... maybe i will flash it tomorrow... it will be my first flash so... thinking well before doing it.. lol ... how's phone quality? are stuff like camera (recording and photo) improved?

They added some options for video, mostly effects. I like the B/W for video. Camera quality is good. No difference from stock as far as I can see.
A lot more control as far as how your phone behaves (animations, etc). In fact, more options than I need.
You will miss some of the stock widgets though. And will have to get from the market.
Currently, I'm in the process of extracting the APK's from HTC's zip (between extreme beer sessions), and will see if they work correctly. They had a good Office app. and the weather widget.
If you do flash, you will need to also get the flash file for google apps and flash both at the same time. Then, afterwords, you can go to the market again, and get what you need.
Ohhhhh.... root your phone first.
already rooted my phone.. download rom manager from market.. probably will be using it to install cm7

I prefer to install it the old fashioned way, rather than Rom Manager. Although it's nice to flash the clockwork recovery.
I copy it to the root, goto hboot, recovery, wipe all caches, then run both updates. Cyan and googleapps
Remember, to a recovery backup on your phone, BEFORE flashing any new ROM.
They have TONS of instructions here.
Good luck.
i am going to follow this guide
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide
is it for cyanogenmod 6 or is it also valid for cm7?
installed cm7 finally.. got some issues but finally it's fine... only thing i couldn't install yet is app2sd... ext formatting done through rom manager doesn't seem to work... and i missed installation of the gmail app (i installed google addons for cm7) and when i started the phone, it asked whether to download and install gmail app.. i skipped thinking i would be able to install it later or recover it from my titanium backup...
i could not install it later.... and i messed up with my backup (i forgot to copy the license file...darn... i only copied the titanium backup folder thinking everything was there)..
first impressions.. i miss htc sense... not a big fan of adw launcher and most widgets not as good as htc sense ones... battery does not seem to be better.. is actually a buit worse than the stock rom (which was good imo)... maybe i need to re-calibrate my battery?
haven't installed a lot of apps yet so can't evaluate performance for now (performance was good on stock rom until i installed lots of apps and moved them to sd)... cm7 is more ugly than stock rom imo. will continue to use it and get more used to it... but overall.. i am missing stock rom... ( a lot of features seem missing or need fixing in cm7)
Hi people,
I'm pretty new at this, altough this device is my second android smartphone. My first was an LG GW620(rooted and cyanogenmod) now I have the Wildfire (already rooted).
Before I will use custom roms I would love to ask you some questions, because I had a lot of problems with the cyanogen mod on my LG. (Radio FM didn't work, bluetooth, camera, ect..)
Wile rooting my Wildfire, I did a backup with the Clockworkmod Recovery (nandroid I presume) but I am a bit of a noob when it's about backing up and "restoring" it to the same state as before the custom ROM. So I would like to know if indeed I can restore it to the same state (rooted, Android 2.2.1, software 2.22.405.1) and how axactly to do that?
Also, will I have the same problems again with the cyanogen MOD like before?
And last but not least :
What is the current best suited custom ROM to use on this device (hopefully bug-free ^_^) ?
(I did a search and found an old thread (2010) asking for the best rom suitable for the wildfire, so I wanted to create a new one)
Thank you for your help and your input!
With regards, xXxeXtreme
PS.: Sorry for any spellingerrors, still need to install an english spellcheck on this b0x :>
...I'll do that right away ;-)
/ Not 1 more thread like this. Sigh
Anyways, the answer depends on whether you like HTC Sense or not. If you can answer this with 100% surety, you can choose your Custom ROM more easily. CM7 for the Wildfire has come a long way from CM6, and, doesn't have the problems you listed. (FM Works, Cam works, Video Recording works, BT works - BUT, with an additional app called Bluetooth File Transfer installed, else, it may cause issues)
If you cannot live without Sense and its apps (Like Contacts and Dialer), then look at Sense based ROMs like JokerDroid, WildPuzzle, DK Custom ROM etc.
The entire listing can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
There is no definitive answer to what is the best ROM. Every member will have their own opinion, based on what suits them. No ROM is 'universally' good. Infact, many have given up root and gone back to the Stock ROM, because that is what suited them ultimately.
Nandroid Restores can be done from the same menu where you backed up. When you backed up, you must have noticed another option called "Restore". Nandroid Backups are restored from there. Make sure that you do NOT rename the backup folder on your SDCard, nor move it to any other location.
Wow, that was fast thanks for the reply.
I did notice the restore option, but I wanted to be 100% sure that that would indeed revert things to its stock state. And although the Sense is great, fast and ...
I do long for the CyanogenMod's hugely configuration options. So I think I will go for that.
I'll let you guys know how it turned out
Greetz,
xXx
Hmmm... I installed ROM Manager premium and through there I downloaded the CyanogenMOD 7.1.0-RC1, wiped the Dalvik cache and installed it.
When it tried booting, it looked like it got stuck in an boot-loop, it froze and booted again, over and over again.
I'm now trying to restore my last backup, hopefully it will work.
Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone?
Grtz,
xXx
EDIT: I thought of something, I wanted to keep my apps, contacts, ect.. so I 'only' wiped the dalvik cache, nothing else.
Could this be what caused the boot-loop?
EDIT2: Ooooh yes, the ROM Manager premium did a complete backup, and my is back just like it was when I backupped YIIHAAAA (...yeah, I was a bit affraid there ^_^ )
Strange thing though, when I started the phone with volume-down, power button, then did a backup from there, it did'nt backup data and all. only the system. How does that come? (PS.: I used revolutionary to S-Off)
EDIT3: Yups; that did the trick. Wiping all of the data before flashing the mod was what I did wrong. Now it boots up perfectly
It's necessary to perform a full wipe before installing a new ROM. (Not applicable for updates to an existing ROM, like CM RC1 to a new nightly). Else, you are going to end up in a bootloop.
best rom hhhmmmmm ?
No one can tell you whits is the best rom. It is up to you. Whits phone is the best ????
I use hell fire and love it. It is smoot easy and beautyfull. I have not found anything whits not function. Then it maybe should bee me. But no rom can change that.
If you looking for the orginal rom to buzz (wildfire) look here. Here is a gooooood webpage.
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...5.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe
You can find a lot of orginal roms here with a lot of language.
I my self is pretty new to this game. But I have just boyed a cheep phone and start playing. It is a nice and safe way to learn.
I have tryed a lot of the roms and found that if you take your time and let the phone rest in peas wheil it work nothing gos wrong. As the guy up mention wipe everything before flash. Take your time and maybe a cup of coffe and you are playing the best computergame ever.
Have a nice time with the nerves on edge.
So, as people know, the newest builds of CM7 or CM9 by JackpotClavin require it to be placed on top of a fully updated Gingerbread Droid Pro. However, those of us with a US Band unlocked radio can't do that without losing our unlocked radio since there is no unlocker for the gingerbread radio. Based on what Axl did for the Droid 2 Global, I've created a gingerbread kernel based on the Droid Pro to allow us to install gingerbread roms while maintaining our unlocked radios. I've also created a clockworkmod backup that can be used as is, or as a base for installing another gingerbread rom such as CM7. Thanks to JohnS and dettofatto, the kernels and clockworkmod backups were updated to 4.7.3. Below are the Resources and the Process.
Resources:
1) RDS Lite (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19390783&postcount=1)
2) SBF 2.26 (http://db.tt/5gKwCQwF)
3) TBH Radio Unlocker (http://goo.gl/6NuuG - http://www.mediafire.com/?9pfbk846tjb5a36)
4) Root (http://www.psouza4.com/Droid3/)
5) Droid 2 bootstrap (http://www.mediafire.com/?g8l7vy0futbc4g5)
6) Kernel (US http://www.mediafire.com/?swv4bl7wa47mpxg or EU http://www.mediafire.com/?w6963rmkvdqmro1)
7) ClockworkMod Backup (Verizon US http://www.mediafire.com/?yhr4b768qbnyote or European http://www.mediafire.com/?wn3pyy5fw3i1nr2)
8) Optional Roms - CM7 for Droid Pro (http://goo.gl/M6e4s) or Apex for Droid Pro (http://goo.gl/sTwSp)
Process:
1) Boot to Recovery & Wipe Data (R+M+Power)
2) Boot to Bootloader (Up+Down+Power) & SBF to 2.26 (Using RSD Lite & SBF file) - Usually I have to copy SBF File to root of Hard Drive & name it 2026.sbf or it may fail (ymmv)
3) Skip Activation (http://goo.gl/n2Zhw)
4) Settings->Applications, Set Unknown Sources and USB Debugging (in development)
5) Root
6) Install Bootstrap apk, open, press 'bootstrap recover'. then 'reboot recovery' to boot to recovery mode.
7) While in recovery mode, and without rebooting at all:
...a) Wipe Data
...b) Install Radio Unlock
...c) Install Kernel
...d) Restore Clockworkmod backup (you should have extracted the clockworkmod zip so the folder is located on your sdcard at [ie clockworkmod\backup\...] folder (with the system.img and other images under that folder))
8) Optional - Install cm7, apex or other rom you download
9) Reboot
Notes:
1) You can build your own Clockworkmod recovery file by following the JackpotClavin link below and then just backing up your build. It won't have signal while you're doing it (because of the locked radio), but after you restore it later using the above steps, it'll be fine.
2) Your SIM needs to be unlocked from verizon (i used sim-unlock.net) to work.
3) Info on an Argentinian 2.3.6 rom here

Good Luck!
hey im from argentina, here we have Motorola Pro which is the same as droid pro but it doesnt use cdma, it uses gsm and hsdpa. Can i install this on my phone or will it turn to a nice brick?
now i have ANDROID 2.2.2 and it says that the phone is the xt610 same as the droid pro.
thanks
edit: i just followed your source (jackpotcalvin) and it says it should work with gsm but there are still issues
bveditz, thanks for your work.
i have a droid pro (unlocked, verizon branded).
right now i'm using android v2.2 because the TBH radio hack only works with this version. i didn't dare doing any updates because of that. lol. i have one questions.
my phone is already sim unlocked.
so with this new CM7 build, can i just flash and use it without doing the TBH radio hack all over again?

Yes, you don't need to unlock the radio, you can start from step 5 (or 6 if its already rooted) and just skip the part about running the radio unlock. Running the radio unlock again doesn't hurt anything either.
Just a word of note, I don't know how the froyo build is by default (i didn't use it), but the current CM7 build still has the issue with switching between mobile data and wifi data, and mobile data can also cut out at times. All that info is in the CM7 discussion, but it's worth noting that the Droid Pro CM7 Build isn't a final build and might not function with the same stability as the Froyo build did. This has nothing to do with this process, it's just the current state of the CM7 rom at the moment. Flashing APEX might produce better results with the radio, but you lose features of CM7, although it has a number of its own features.
installed it. i just started with step 7C. so far so good.
radio is working. sim is still unlocked.
so far i've found one thing, maybe i didn't see the setting yet. the keyboard back lights aren't working?

No, with that issue and the wifi/radio issues (loosing connection and not being able to switch between the two) , I switched over to the APEX ROM, it's more stable. You don't get the features of CM7, but it has less bugs. Might want to try that. You don't need to do anything different, just put the apex file on your SD, reboot to clockwork mod and wipe data and reflash.
is it possible to use this in some way to have band unlock and normal ginerbread without cm7
Yes. You need to basically upgrade Gingerbread to the full release, root it and do a nandroid backup. Then, you follow the steps in the first post but instead of restoring the nandroid backup of CM7, you install the nandroid backup of regular gingerbread that you made yourself.
bveditz, thanks, that is along the lines of what i was thinking might work after reading the directions... Im already running tbh rooted gingerbread... Do i need to sbf and upgrade to a clean gingerbread, or can i nandroid backup what i already have and then retain all my settings and apps so i dont have to start over. Has anyone noticed any disadvantage to useing the older radio besides the obvious advantage of being able to use the band unlock?
Excellent tutorial!!
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL GUYS. Also, you should make sure to mention after installing bootstrap, press 'bootstrap recover'. then 'reboot recovery' option. I did that, installed the kernal and restored backup fine.
Only issue so far was a -20% battery decrease randomly. I had 100% with a brand new battery fully charged for the first time and when I finished installing cm7 I was already on 80%, then dropped to 70% on a reboot or two, its weird. Anyone else had this happen? I heard the apex 2.0 rom did it to someone else as well on another forum
Also, do you guys know how to get back the blur social network apps such as friendfeed, or whichever app it was that adds your friends social network updates to their contact numbers on your contacts? Most people don't like it, but I think its a pretty awesome built in feature

Thanks, made the note to the tutorial. I haven't noticed the issue with the battery, but I do know that this is one of those roms that seems to jump in increments of 10 for the battery which is kinda weird. That said, i only used it about a week on CM7 before switching over to the Apex rom (and haven't noticed that issue on the apex rom).
Don't know about blur, I didn't use the original OS at all. That said, you can do what the guy above did and wipe the phone, upgrade all the way to gingerbread, do a nandroid backup then follow the original instructions but use that backup to restore to, which should have the full motoblur functionality. Thats just a guess though, haven't tried it myself.
------------------
Could you re-up just the Kernel file? I've followed your instructions to the T and every time it seems that I have a problem at that step.
I've gotten to Flashing the Kernel VIA CWM, and when I try to restore the backup of CM7 via \clockworkmod\restore\ folder - it will say MD5 mismatch.
Also, if I skip the restore portion of CM7 and just try to reboot the phone after flashing the Kernel, I will be stuck at the red M.
I've tried rebooting the phone right after applying the band unlock (all after SBF + Wipe data), and the phone will boot up just fine if I skip flashing the Kernel (again I leave it in zip form and install it via CWM).
I’ve already unlock my SIM via code provided by VZW (I am a VZW customer in good standing)
While stuck at the red M, I’ve done a battery pull and tried to enter Recovery mode by pressing M+R+Power, and the recovery screen that is booted up doesn’t look like it’s compatible with the phone. I can almost describe it as a bunch of white horizontal lines of what the menu should be, and all the menus and the green android are skewed diagonally to the right/and also looks like it’s double or triple vision.
I know a very similar process works for the D2G, because I have successfully performed and tested it on the D2G on one of my other lines.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I can stick with Froyo, but I’d like to have GB.
Try redownloading the CM7 backup, it might be a corrupted download. If that doesn't work, try the APEX file. But, yes, you cannot reboot without restoring a gingerbread backup or you'll have to start over again (there's ways to get back to the cwm but i'm not sure how, I did it accidently a few times).
Thanks I am a complete noob
So it turns out the problem is when I unzipped the Backup that it created sub folders "\nandroid\restore\xxxx\xxx\backup\restore\"
Just to save everyone headaches, make sure the when you unzip the file into your backup folder that the name of the next folder down is the series of numbers that represent the name & number i.e.
Should NOT be
\clockworkmod\backup\clockworkmod\clockworkmod\backup\2011-11-27.09.52.03\
but instead SHOULD BE
\clockworkmod\backup\2011-11-27.09.52.03\
My 7zip by default created all those sub directories, which caused the CWM restore not to find the back up files.
On another note, I am having issues with GSM Wifi and 3G.
With a fresh flash & WiFI on - if I connect WIFI first I cannot later add the APN and access Cellular Data
Inversely, If I add the APN first (again after a fresh SBF flash, kernel update, and Backup restore), and connect to cellular data, none of the WIFI connects I make can access WIFI Data
I am going to try WIFI fixer in one of the older threads to see if this resolves the problem.

If you're talking about the two multiupload files I put up, use one of the other links below megaupload. I just tried the bottom one (wupload) and it worked. If you're talking about RSD Lite and SBF files, I'll see if I can find another link to them, but you can easily find them by searching the forums or google.
**Edit** Edited first post with non-megaupload links.

Let me know how that worked out. I stopped using CM7 and switched to Apex because of the Wifi/Cellular switching issues of the november cm7 rom.
