Ad-Free Android - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I heard somewhere that Ad-Free Android slows your phone down. I never installed it, but im pretty sure I have it. I have no ads on any apps and my browser is kind of slow. I'm running CM7 nightly #14. Does anyone know if this comes pre-installed on CM7?

I'm not sure if it's already cooked into CM7 or not, but I will say that I don't think it slows the phone down. However, if the hosts files get out of date, it will indeed cause your browser speeds to dwindle greatly. Usually updating the hosts files correct that problem.

i've never noticed a problem with browser speeds... Love not having adds in some of the apps though!

I have never noticed any problems with it either.

Depending on how your hosts file is set up, you may notice a slowdown before a timeout occurs.
Consider this, the web page in question calls certain ads. Your hosts file points to some address that instead of just saying file does not exist, it sits there until a time out occurs. In this sense, slowdowns can occur. I don't recall of having localhost/127.0.0.1 as the IP in the hosts results in a simple file not found, or this stalling issue.

Does running the Ad-Free App slowdown Android

Basically just wondering if the Ad Free ( app where it kills application ads ) bogs down the phone at all?
Honestly I run this app and haven't really noticed any bogging down. If it slows it down at all it is not noticeable by me. It works kind of like adblock for Firefox or Chrome which don't really slow down your browser. Maybe in devices with less powerful hardware you would notice a difference, but so far on my EVO I see no difference at all when apps start up because of Ad Free.
ad-free and 4g
I have noticed that adfree tends to freeze up some web pages when on 4g. When I revert to the original host file the sites load fine. I don't have any problems when on 3g thought. Hope this helps.

Alright cool. I was just unsure how it accomplished blocking the ads, and thought that it could be bogging the evo down.
It works by editing the host file so known ad serving URL's are redirect to 127.0.0.1
It shouldn't hurt anything.
I now Vaelek removed it from VaelPak saying it wasn't playing nice with an increasing number of things. Can't remember details though.

Ads being blocked

I recently installed cyanogenmod 6.1.2 and for some reason it is blocking ads without any program installed to do that. I used to have have adfree installed on other roms but that's not the case anymore and I'm trying to run an app called audiogalaxy but it wont work without ads. I guess my question is does cyanogen normally block ads and if not, what might be causing this.

This worked perfectly on my Samsung Captivate! I was trying to figure out how to stop the ad blocking and this did the trick. Thanks!

Flame-retardant suit on....
As long as a developer isn't obnoxious with ad placement, and especially if they offer an ad-free version as a choice, I really don't have a problem with ads. And in fact, I could almost consider it a form of piracy to block ads. (Extra flame resistant gel added.) The developer has decided they want to be paid for their work, and there is nothing wrong with that. Whether you download a cracked version or whether you use the ad supported version and block ads, you're preventing them from getting paid. I think ad-supported apps are a reasonable compromise. They get some compensation, and you don't have to shell out a dime.
I do have ads blocked right now, and I did it because I love Angry Birds and they made it nearly unplayable with the new ad placement, and didn't allow us the choice of an ad-free version. That just ticked me off. I actually feel bad about the other developers who aren't getting paid as a result. I'm thinking about turning it off, and/or buying the ad free versions of some of those apps. I wish I could just block ads in specific apps. I have some apps that are useful, but not so useful or frequently used that I feel like paying for an ad free version, and I'd be happy to let them get some revenue from ads when I use it.
I also don't deny that I'm completely hypocritical on this with my Tivo. I'm fast forwarding through the ads of the recorded GB/Philly game as I write this. I'm NOT passing moral judgment on anyone. If you want to block ads, that's fine. As I said, I have done it myself, but as I started to think about it more, I started to question whether it's really that different than downloading a cracked version (which I won't say I've never done either, though I've been making an effort to resist and correct lately). It's just something I thought I'd bring up in case someone hasn't thought about it from that perspective.

[Q] Help me identify this annoying SPAM

I have this star with an orange circle dot inside it that pops up at around 5:30am (eastern time) almost everyday since a few days ago. When I pull down the top bar to see the notification, it is an advertizement that will open up an internet browser.
I would love to know how this is happening and what app it might be that is causing this. I have about 90 apps installed and dont want to go ahead and delete everything to hunt it down.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
BTW=running Calkulin's Evo2 Froyo rom.
Have you tried going into Settings > Applications > Running Services? You should be able to spot anything running that's out of the ordinary that way.
I did check, didnt see anything, but i will check again today as I bet it will pop-up today a few hours at 530am. Has anyone seen this as well??
here is an idea....
use titanium backup to FREEZE all USER APPS, except for ones that you are SURE are not it...then if you see that at 0530am it did not happen, unfreeze a number of them, maybe 10 or so. at the next 0530am continue this process...until you find the group of 10 that causes the problem to resume.
It's some rogue app that is pushing ads (AirPush). Go to the market and check the reviews on some of the latest apps you've downloaded. that'll help you track it down along with anthonyandrews's idea.

Initial nailed it. I recall this being discussed on the forum a short while back. Thats just ugly for an app to do that though.
out of curiosity, what was the app?
It's called heyzap. New way of ads.

Strange app spam

Does anyone get random app notifications that seem like spam. Apps like "badoo" and other crap.
Also, I get random pictures in my gallery that are apparently downloaded into my phone without me knowing. I delete them, but every few days I notice 1 or a few have shown up again.
I'm trying to add screenshots, but I keep getting errors. Ill edit on computer.
edit: Here are the screenshots.

I get those notifications every once in a while. I believe they come from certain apps like yahoo messenger used to do that. Same thing with the pictures there like cached images for apps or ads. Try using an add blocking host file if your not already it helps a lot.

I've always used yahoo messenger and have never got those. I would double check any obscure apps you have added to your phone. Some probably have bad intentions.
I can't really see any of my apps being questionable. Of course I wouldn't really know for sure I guess. I was just hoping somebody would be able to pinpoint the problem, but it probably is something that happens quite often and is hard to pinpoint.
It is definitely caused by an app you installed. Your best bet would be to get your apps sorted by date of install and start deleting your most recent apps until this goes away.
When this happened to me, it was from some live wallpaper I had installed.
Ya I guess that makes perfect sense. I just wondered how many other people have seen it. I plan to clear everything and do a hard reset anyway. Starting from scratch cause I'm tired of ridiculous lag.
Allstar...
look for an app that removes " airpush " notifcations
AirPush Detector - Dan Bjorge
Addons Detector - Denper
Lookout Ad Network Detector - lookout labs
I get them, I think they are Go Locker ics theme.
I had that go locker ics theme...and I never had an ad like that...but meh...I got rid of all the go software save for go launcher...though I think I might be going back to the launcher pro that I had on my garminefone
This app will tell you the culprit.

Big thanks!! It showed me the one app that was causing the spam. Mp3 Music Download was the culprit. I haven't used it in awhile so I deleted it. Thanks for the tip.

[Q] Ad Blocking

Can someone tell me why I still have ads on my apps?
I am rooted with one-click, installed Calkulin's rom 2.9.2 and went ahead and installed Adfree to see if it would help. Still have ads.
Never had a problem with the rooting or flashing the rom. I have also tried several modems trying to find the best for my phone. I currently have FC18 installed and it seems to be the best so far, Sat. lock is almost instant.
Thanks in advance,
Rick
OP where are you seeing the ads?
Did you run adfree and rebooted your phone ?
I'm on blazer and see ads in tweetcaster. That's the only one as far as I can tell
go to the settings in Addfree.

Add free works best while app with adds is running, hit home button, open add free, run add free, you should get a conf. No add present, do this while on wi-fi .
Works for me every time.

Tried adfree, adaway and rom toolbox.
Still get ads on some apps.
Oh well, they are free apps so can't really complain.
Edit: I found another post on another forum and it stated if the host file shows a bunch of IP addresses as "127.0.0.1", then it didn't work. Anybody know how to fix this?

Odd...that is precisely the core of the ad-block... basically any address that points to that, say ad.doubleclick.net gets redirected internally to the loop address, i.e. it wont be able to load the ad since its being blocked. It could be that the application is getting the ad from somewhere else. Try droid wall.
