[Q] Can I go back to stock after rooting and romming - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So recently I warrantied a G2 and was glad I never rooted and rommed it with CM7. I had CM on my old G1 and would love to get into it again. Can I go back to stock in case I need this one warrantied? I don't want them to know I did anything with it. The other topics that popped up in the search weren't specific with warranty. Thanks.

Yes there are procedures you have to follow in order to unroot and s-on again if you have to return it for warranty reasons or whatever reason you have. Its pretty simple... but it matters what method of rooting you did. Like unforgivens way of rooting you have to hex edit and while on gfree you can flash the PC10IMG.zip but still get s-off and you have to follow more procedures i think to get s-on...

Quick noob question

My girlfriend has a Evo she got on craigslist and when she purchased it, it was rooted and had s-off...I had to put factory software on it because she had to take it to sprint to get it reprogrammed back to sprint because the person she bought it from had it on metropcs...well I was wondering what do I have to do now to get it rooted again?? Because she likes the new sense UI and she wants it on her phone after seeing it on mine and I don't wanna mess nothing up...I'm new to the HTC scene and rooting HTC phones
Root with Unrevoked. Then run a stock RUU to clear up any problems that may have been left behind. Instructions and links for both can be found on here, just search for them.
Ok so I do this even tho she's been rooted before and has s-off?? And once I flash stock ruin will it have super user permission on it??

Yep you can root unroot and root many times with no side effects
Just follow the steps and you be fine.
I suggest using unrevoked

Or, if it was me, I'd probably ruu the phone then root it from the beginning with the auto root post. That way the slate would be completely clean and wouldn't have any remnants from the previous owner's work on it.
Most of the info you need will be here:

[Q] Easiest way to hide root/unroot for repair?

Hey everyone I just wanted to know if there's an easy way to unroot or just get s-on so I can take my EVO to sprint for repair...I've searched for some stuff and found that there is an s-on tool zip from unrevoked and the unroot method but I was wondering if I would be able to just get s-on for repair and then get s-off via another zip or adb...I have rooted using the unrevoked method and I have the .76 eng bootloader
Open to any suggestions...just trying to find the quickest and easiest way to save root if at all possible...thanks in advance

sprint wont even look if you're using a stock rom they wont even notice, they will only notice if you are running a modded os

Well I was gonna flash a stock rom but I read that if they see s-off in hboot they'll void my insurance and warranty

It all depends on the sprint store, the tech that's looking at it, and if that tech got laid the night before. Its unpredictable. Most probably wouldn't even check, but its possible to get that one tech that plays by the rules and takes life too seriously. I say unroot it to be safe.
If you're on the Eng. 76 bootloader, you're always going to be s off, until you change bootloader. You said you also ran unrevoked at some point? I would just flash the unrevoked s on tool, and then run an ruu, and be done with it. Then you don't have to worry. I'm the type that'd rather be safe than sorry, and have.my account flagged.

[Q] Un-Rooting HTC Buzz (Wildfire)?

Hi everyone.
I just want to know if there is a way you can un-root the HTC Buzz (Wildfire)??
Because I know you void the phone's warranty if you root it; and I don't want to sit with a problem when my phone breaks and I can't repair it because of the phone being rooted...
I'm going to root my HTC wildfire using unrevoked V3.32
So I need to know if it is possible to unroot the phone before I root it with unrevoked.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks!
If you will be rooting using Unrevoked, you can get back your original state, by simply running an RUU from the Shipped ROMs RUU Collection here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=windows mobile&model=Buzz
Remember though, if you go for S-OFF'ing your Wildfire, there is no way yet to get back from it.
Although running an RUU in essence doesn't need a guide, you can take a look at the procedure here anyway:

[Q] Back to stock/unrooted

I am looking to root my Droid Inc2 but I need to know how to go back to a complete stock/unrooted state for when I have to send my phone into Verizon. I'm thinking this would require the stock RUU file if I'm not mistaken.
Could anyone let me know how to go about this before I root my device?
Thanks.
Would also like to know this.
Yes you would need a stock ruu but if you root using alpharev method there is currently no way back to complete stock your bootloader will remain s-off

Bump.
Will the phone ever be able to go back to FULL stock with S-On? Or is this just a temporary situation? Because down the road, there might be issues where I might have to do a warranty replacement.
I'm pretty sure if you just flash the stock rom you will be fine sending it back. I have heard horror stories about people being denied warranty service for sending in s off phones but don't put much stock into it. That is just my opinion tho...

[Q] Is it safer to use HTC unlock tool?

I just got my DZ back from HTC, and unfortunately they upgraded my firmware to 2.3. I took a look on the instructions on downgrading 2.3 to 1.xx, and it looks quite complicated and risky.
I know that HTC has released unlocking tool for DZ and I wonder if it is safer to use that. Anyone tried it before?
General opinion is that HTC's unlock tool is rubbish because (a) it is very restrictive and doesn 't really unlock properly, and (b) it officially voids your warranty.
The procedure in the Wiki is quite safe if you follow it properly. Read it carefully and come back and ask questions, before you try it, if there's anything you are not clear on. There are plenty of people here who can help you.
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
The thing is, that if you unlocked your boot loaders via htcdev, you will be able to get perm root and custom rom, BUT you will still have s-on. So apps like rom manager or boot manager won't work properly.
I recommend the wiki way too.

I think you should use the wiki's instruction. It's actually a lot easier.
I had the same thought as you, tried HTC's unlocking method and could never get it done. Then I tried the wiki's instruction, downgraded, rooted and installed ICS all in about an hour.
Disclaimer: I am a noob, this is the second time I root a phone (first time was my SGS S a year ago).

+1 to all of this.
HTC Unlock does not give you S-Off, does not give you root, and you can only flash from ADB. Just do the Wiki method, and get real control of your phone.
I think you shouldn't use the htc tool....not the greatest result but lost your garanty!

Using the HTC tool is like sending a registered letter to HTC declaring you just voided your warranty. Stick to the wiki, IMHO!
Thanks guys. I decided to follow the wiki and got it successfully unlocked again! Got a custom rom back on!
Its warranty is not an issue to me as it is already expired

You did right with the wiki. If for any reason something went horribly wrong with a flash and you still had S-On bootloader, such as via htcdev unlock, you could have been screeeewed. S-Off makes your phone virtually bomb-proof, seriously it takes effort hard bricking a G2/DZ that's S-Off
