[Q] Auto Rotate takes 2-3 seconds ? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
Auto rotation in the basic apps (sms, mail, internet) is feeling slow.
well - it works - but i compared to my mate with his desire (no hd)
and he is like 1 seconds. im like at least twice the time.
using froyo 2.2 with most updates
but not all - i rooted it with visionary.
using ad.launcher.ex
juice defender + ultimate juice
startup cleaner
adv. task killer.
i know those are some, but im a bit sure this time didnt change
since i tried sms when i had my phone new ...
anyone having the same problems ?
what shall i do ?
strang thing: the game "U CONNECT" which can also rotate the screen
is only needing about 0.3 seconds ...

i'd try and disable those other apps you have running, ie juicedefender, task killer etc. and see if that makes a difference?

Background-ed app eating CPU resources!

Hi,
We all knew that we should not use task killer to kill apps, because when we hit the back button, the app will not active anymore ... but it will still occupy some memory (RAM).
When Android OS needs more RAM it will remove in-active apps to free some.
Related article: http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/ (GOOD READ)
We should not panic when we see a huge list of apps when we start task killer.
Ok, got it there ...
Now, I installed this app called Quick System Info (FREE):
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/org.uguess.android.sysinfo/
Which you can use to see what kind of processes are still running or apps that are still occupying RAM. It could show you the amount of RAM and CPU resources that are being used by each app.
So, I went to the Quick System Info -> Processes, hit the "menu" button -> Preferences and set like this:
- Update Speed = Low
- Show Memory Usage [checked]
- Show CPU Usage [checked]
- Sort by = CPU Usage
- Direction = Descending
Go back and watch ...
Surprisingly, I saw "Market" app is eating 1% CPU resources once in a while ... again and again ...
Hey, I thought it (Market app) is suspended in the background? I don't have it active, I pressed the back button when I finished with it.
Why is it eating 1% CPU from now an then in the background?
Obviously, this will drain battery power for something that I don't need.
Any thought?
I am now wondering if I install other kind of process monitoring app, and see if the suspended Quick System Info is also eating CPU resources
Why should we not use task killers? I`ve used them on android for the last year otherwise like you say background tasks use resources slowing up the system.
Obviously dont close any system important apps but I`m always closing down background apps that I no longer require.
1% every now and again? I really wouldn't worry about that to be perfectly honest. The impact on battery life will be incredibly small, so much so I doubt you'd even notice if you weren't watching it like a hawk.
By far the biggest drain on battery life remains all of the wireless stuff (wifi, bluetooth and 3G internet) followed closely by the screen itself. Turn those off when not in use and the miniscule drain of suspended tasks won't be an issue.
I'm sure if Google thought suspended tasks would be an important factor in battery drain they would've designed it differently to start with.

It does every minute or so, and so far I found only this app (Market).
I just found out this morning before went to work, so I don't have time to inspect more.
Too bad I cannot see CPU TIME (the amount of time the process took 100% of cpu resources).

that 1% would be it occasionally checking in with the market to see if any updates have been released for the programs you have installed, so that it can give you a notification when the update is released.
i would imagine that is what it is anyway.
and yes, 1% every so often is negligible, and if you killed just that process, i doubt you would notice any difference.

I am not sure about this..
Have you noticed that you will get a notification if there is an update to application that is installed in your phone?
I think the marketplace doesn't have a push notification yet. So it periodically will check whether there is any update to the installed application.
Allright, that might be it ... the Market is checking for apps aupdate.
And most probably 1% is not much (I don't know how to measure this and translate it to battery life time). 1% every minute ... hmmm
1 hour of 1% cpu per minute = X % of battery life.
If we have N processes?
N = email check, weather check, friendstream check, RSS check, whatnot check
I`ll give you an example why I use a task killer.
Sometimes I use an app that goes online every few minutes and notifies me of any updates. I can 100% be certain this app even when in the background uses enough cpu to cause the phone to slowdown. Dont ask me why, maybe bad programming but this is the exact reason why I need a task killer to get rid of it.
Once its gone the phone is fine again. it happends on a few apps I own, so when I finish with them, I kill them.
I wouldnt recommend a task killer that kills everything, you just need to be selective.
That is a perfect example for using task killer
What I wrote in the first post is about using task killer to just kill apps without knowing anything.
In the past, I just select all and KILL ... Then the HTC Sense got reloaded
I was scared it could corrupt my phone ... lol.

Yes thats a bit extreme killing everything.
I`ve also used startup auditor in the past. That stops some apps loading at startup , for example footprints, never use it so I kill it before it gets a chance to load up. Have to be careful what you limit though as some tasks are used by others.
That Startup Auditor is interesting, does it work as expected?
Or you encountered some quirks or issues with it?
Yeah, I don't quite like with the way Android startup (or HTC?), for example: FM radio ... it also started automatically after reboot.

Seems to work fine, not sure what help it is though hehe, in terms of speed/memory savings. I stop the radio , bluetooth, google talk and footprints. But I also use it to start some apps automatically.
I found this list of what you can/can`t disable. You can still run them after startup, just they wont load automatically when you start the phone.

Camera battery usage

Just got my Desire today Wohoo
Checking the battery-usage screen, my camera is always listed after I have used it.
Why wouldn't the camera it shut itself down when not in use? Will I need to allways.
Tried to kill it with Advanced Task Killer, but it pops back up
Is there any way to fix this?
yh it eats up quite alot and i used it like 3 times, should be one the apps that close instantly

[Q] How can I stop apps from launching themselves ????

I see that when a task killer stops a program (cityid, stocks, etc) I can look right back in there and see it running again and in a minute the page is full again of the same apps that I just killed. Even with autokill on they start while the screen is off. I want to know if anyone has figured out what file or service keeps starting these and if there is an edit to it to tell them to quit it ? I am not comfortable with a device that I do not have control of stuff that starts and goes online by itself. Thanks.

If you're not comfortable with a device you do not have full control of, looks like rooting is for you
Seriously though, rooting your device is the ONLY way to remove City ID, Stocks, etc. from your device. HOWEVER.
You should probably break yourself of the task killer habit. Lifehacker explains it all here: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them.
In a nutshell, Android is actually really good at preserving memory, and killing apps that will keep popping up drains battery faster. The reason they keep popping up is Android is trying to predict what you're going to use next based on what you just did (or something like that), so potentially anything you have installed that is there on startup will hit that list.
I tried using Watchdog as the article said, but honestly I found in the end I just wanted more control. unrevoked 3.21 and several ROM tries later I'm happy with where I'm at
EDIT: I see by your sig that you have rooted your Dinc.. therefore, it's a very simple process if you want to get rid of the app entirely. If you want to leave it installed, you're not going to find a solution to the constant opening - Android is what Android is.
Most of the apps you see in the task list are not active. They're just loaded in memory so they can launch faster when you need them.
Like the previous poster pointed out, task killers are counter productive. You just get a continuous cycle with the app launching and being killed. Launching again and being killed again. And on and on.
Best just to leave android alone to do what it was designed to do.
If you still feel the need to be more in control use app autostarts. It allows you to block the initial app launch and block based on events.

Mostly what I want to do is,,,,
,,,To stop applications that come on by themselves and log in even when you set in their settings to not do it, like Skype. I do use Skype to do a calll with a bunch of friends from school, but I want to start it when I want to use it, I am all the time having skype calls come in when I have not even launched the app. I figure that if it is listening for a call then it is useing power needlessly. I do not want to have to log out every time I want it to stop, I just want to close it and it behave and stop useing power. Many apps do that and I think it is a major reason for low battery life. My battery will not hold up a full shift at work, but if I kill the GPS and the 3G the thing has been up for 22 hours and is still at 66% and I have talked for over 2 hours today on the phone, so I think that if more control is gained over app behaviour then we can be happier with our batteries ;-)

You hit the nail on the head there. It's not the apps killing your battery, it's the 3g and gps.
I leave my wifi on all the time but have it set to disconnect if the phone is idle for 15 min. Bluetooth, gps, and 3g are always turned off except when I need them.

lag on motorola defy!

my defy is just 2 weeks old and i have started experiencing trememdous lags....
its 2.2.2 running , kernel is 2.6.32.9-g0671d13 , just in case it could help in finding a solution...
1. the screen goes off on its own half of the time (even though the time out is of 1 minute) and even when i unlock it , it again goes off.. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING
2. i have just 1 game installed, but even then the phone lags a lot, the game lags and so does the entire phone..!
3. the internet isnt getting activated (i guess thats a network problem though), anyone with a similar problem!?
please post replies as soon as possible..
well i too experience the same, mine is 30 days old...
I have disabled gps/data/wifi/auto brightness to get max battery yet it fails to go beyond 1 day even if i use max an hour of wifi.
screen going blank on it own is frustrating
moto widget for time and date does not keep current time
lag in touch even after running ATK on auto aggressive mode
defy is running indian 2.2.2
p.s. any idea if i can get data on first date of use for battery? I somehow feel a new one should give more standby life.
my phone does last around 1 1/2 days with an hours gaming....and it does keep the current date and time (as of now)...
mine too lags inspite of the ATK being on autokill.... even the homescreen takes time to load after pressing the home button ...
Might want to try getting rid of ATK.
Tasks/services run for a reason on android. When something kills them, they'll start back up, causing more cpu and memory usage than if you'd just leave the service running.
Run for a reason, but not necessarily a good one. Stock motorola/vodafone firmware that I had on my defy would run many completely irrelevant processes - VF360, newsandweather, amazon mp3, etc. Task killing isn't the solution because they just start up again.
The best way to get best performance from the phone is to install CM7.
You could try to wipe in stock recovery. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982, point witch says Froyo laggy. You will lose all data.
If you find it laggy afterwards, you will never be happy with the preferments on stock froyo. Then try CM7. You will be able to downgrade to send it to warranty as I also did this. It is quite a difference.

Is it going off while you are holding it by the top, with a finger on the left of the speaker hole?
If it is the case, it is because you are masking the proximity sensor. And if you have the "Pocket detection" feature activated, it will cause this annoying stuff...
Well not to worry even mine was laggy before, i had just installed 2-3 apps. I had to restart my phone at least once then i installed cm7 rc1.5 Now its very fast and i dont remember the last time when my phone was lagging and freezing.
I guess it has something to do with the froyo and motoblur on defy that makes it laggy.
You have to have get rid of stock froyo after owning a defy.. thats the truth..
I did a readup on the ATK stuff and the excerpt from the and dev documents... well since the read i have uninstalled all task killers... (kept one just in case with all auto actions disabled)
I do hope the lag issue is resolved after moving to CM7/Jboogie3 etc
however the battery issue is a major hurdle for now as one day is too less, i probably have to take it to the service center for a checkup and/or claim warranty on battery. till them no flashing for me...
att: patriiice - even when the proximity sensor is not covered, i do experience screen blanks, almost immediately asa the power button is pressed to wake the device.
The lag presented on the Defys running Froyo is a "super nice feature" by Motorola it has an easy fix tho.
Its caused by the VM consuming all memory, all its needed is adjusting the amount of MB the VM should leave free.
There are a few ways to it:
1) Run a terminal emulator, or use GScript Lite to run this:
su
vm.min_free_kbytes=8192
(Not permanent, need to be ran every time you reboot)
2) Get Sysctl from market and do it from there.
3) Get SetVSel and do it from there.
Lag
I have that problem to. The bad thing is that i can`t answer call during the lag, it says i have my phone is closed or i don`t have signal. I`ve installed Temp+CPU and during lag it shows that the proc is running at 100%. Memory has all the time, around 130 min and 230 max. Closed all programs one by one, no change. I restart the phone and everything is running smooth and it lasts max 1 day. i have stock rom 2.2.2. (please excuse my spelling)

I also use 2.2.2 stock and my defy runs without lag... you should consider to root the phone and freeze some unnecessary stock-preinstalled apps like Kindle, Voice command, etc... the ones you will never use. I freezed about 20 apps and there is no lag at all. (I even froze Maps, Streets, SIM toolkit, and some others)

My Defy was lagging until I rooted and installed SetVSel. Now its running as breeze with Stock Indian Froyo.
stock froyo is not good but it shouldn't be that bad. there were some faulty battery issue that i have heard of before too. but in your case your defy might even be faulty. so i would suggest you get it replaced or fixed under warranty first before flashing any custom rom.

with rootunistaller i`ve frozen skype and yahoo and i haven`t had any lag since. If i want 2 use them "defrost" and when i`m finished i just "freeze" back the app

Nope. I was wrong after 3 days of normal proc usage it started again. I`ve installed OS Monitor (free on market) and there was a process the ate all my resources: "DRM Protected Content Storage". Selected watch log and there was something like "enter, delete update, uri: content://media/external/audio/media/1 ../44.... /254..."
This process is searching ur phone for media, video audio and looked like it was stucked at this folder. I`ve searched the phone for that folder but couldn't find it so i just killed the app in OS Monitor. After the process restarted at log was showing "media search finished:182 audio files found and 1 video found". Looks like that's my problem and maybe yours to. Cheers mates
so I might visit the service center this weekend to have my battery life checked.. one day life with all wifi/data/gps disabled and below average voice calls is not acceptable at all.
what is stock recovery?? and will it void my warranty???
thanks a lot guys for ur replies!!
but the thing is my phone has become even slower!!
when i first switch on the phone i have around 240MB free RAM but just after an hour everything becomes too slow, even opening of the menu! and after 2-3 hours of usage it keeps on reducing and finally reaches as low as 40MB .....
what could be causing this??
i have android assistant by which i clear cache, ram still it doesnt help....

[Q] Juice Defender: does it work?

Hi, Ive been reading a lot about battery saving apps that I started to get curious as to whether these apps really work.
I installed JD out of curiosity and I have to say that all it doea is disable automatically your phone connections to help you save power. Things that you can actually do manually. Like turning off wifi and mobile network. If im not mistaken you can disable mobile network under your phone's settings.
So my question is, if you can do it manually, what is the point of apps like juice defender? It eats up ram and runs as a background process which in my opinion does more bad than good to your battery unless your the i dont know how to disable connections manually in my phone kind of guy.
Somebody please enlighten me. Thanks.
I have used it for a long times. Since I used Xperia PLAY.
I think this program is good. Yes, if you can manually do it. But the feature I like the most is Screen. It can change CPU ghz according to your screen on / off.
It saves my battery a lot.
Press THANKS if you agree with me.
I am a long time user of jd but these days the only feature i use regularly is to disable data overnight.
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
- Airplane mode over night
- automatic wireless connection with "location" feature (if near a known wireless network it starts the wireless and connects, if not near it directly starts 3G)
- I do not have to mess with on/off wireless/3G
- automatically syncs every hour, so I have to do nothing but still get my mails
- with rooted phone underclock on screen off
- bluetooth off after 5 mins without connected bluetooth device
etc....
It is NOT for you if you want to have online connection all the time. And it is not for you if you don't mind to do all the things manually it does for you.
And in my opinion only the full version really helps, the free version does not much...
I think it's a great app! :good:
If you just need to auto toggle data, check out 3GBattery too.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wyLDEsImNvbS5teXN0aXF1ZS50aHJlZWdiYXR0ZXJ5Il0.
basically, there are 2 main things that drain our devices: 1) 3g/2g and 2) display brightness. I've been using JD since ever, and the difference is awesome with and without. Even the free version is enough to save some batt, in the Agressive mode (connects every 30min).
Besides JD, I am using Greenify. Which needs root to work and does a beautiful job with background apps like Facebook, GMaps etc.
works on both my devices :good:
Personally I think this app is useless.
As OP has said, you can just set up those things manually.
This app just eats RAMs and use your battery up more.
