Just wondering about premium data free - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I was just wondering if they charged 10 our 20 dollars a month for 4g phones because of the new $10 premium data for all smartphones and the $10 for 4g phones.
So do 4g phone users pay 10 or 20 dollars a month extra?

$10 on all smart phones now regardless of network. 3g or 4g.

Sprint never charged $10 for 4G. Blame the idiots here complaining about the charge for misleading you into thinking it was a 4G charge. Sprint charges HIGH USAGE PHONES $10 more a month. They are now rolling that charge out to more smartphones as the usage on them has been increasing over time.

On my heaviest month I've only used maybe 2 to 3 gb

The irony in this is the fact that said "high usage phones" have 4G, which is cheaper for Sprint to produce than 3G data. So by using 4G, we are actually saving Sprint money, even if we use more data than we normally would on 3G.
Premium data fee? I think not. More like "misleadingly named fee to recover the cost of constructing 4G towers, but once we recover those costs it'll all be profit" fee.

If you think your individual usage matters even a little in the grand scheme of things, I suggest maybe auditing a Microeconomics course at your local community college. Here's the short version:
It costs Sprint $x to provide data service, which is variable based on tonnage
There are y users of their data service
They must charge customers $z per month to cover those costs and make a slight profit:
$z MUST BE > $x/y or Sprint starts to lose money. Since $x increases as average data tonnage increases, so must $z increase as well.
Rather than raise everyone's prices by $5, they chose to charge smartphone users - who use FAR more, on average, than non-smartphone customers - $10 per month to cover the increasing costs of data capacity. I used to work at Sprint, and I've seen how exponential the 3G (forget 4G) usage of EVOs were compared to any other phone on their network.
Look at Sprint's publicly available financial data, and then look at their prices for "nearly" unlimited voice and data on an EVO ($79 per month) compared to what the same would cost on any other carrier. If you still feel they're ripping you off and somehow making a ton of profit, I suggest you start an aggressive letter-writing campaign.
P.S. Just in case you think carriers have all the capacity they could ever need and increasing capacity is not a REAL need, I give you two pieces of proof: AT&T (its issues with capacity are well-known) and debt-to-cash ratios of any major US wireless carrier (they racked up that debt by buying capacity).

Sure, but I submit to you the notion that using 4G instead of 3G reduces the overall value of X, Sprint's cost of providing data service. I don't mind the $10 fee, as it's still much cheaper than other carriers. I just think in it's ORIGINAL form (Evo and Epic only), calling it a "premium data fee" was misleading. Yes, those phones were intended and expected to use more data, but the availability of 4G is a balancing factor for those data usage costs to Sprint.

First, refer to my post above this one.
Second, Sprint buys 4G service from Clear wholesale. However, they haven't agreed to terms on that yet. Clear spoke about this in their earnings release a week or two ago, read it if you like. Yes, it should be cheaper per kb, but that's not what Clear is asking for. I won't say what they WANTED Sprint to pay, but I will say it's considerably higher than what you'd pay for OVERAGE with any US carrier per kb. Ridiculous.
But that honestly doesn't even affect what Sprint is charging you because they don't even know what they'll be paying for that as of now. The bottom line is, 4G isn't all that readily available, when it is available it's spotty, and even when it's solid, most people either use wifi or don't turn 4G on because of the massive battery drain.
It isn't now, nor was it ever, a 4G fee.

Huh, I never knew the bit about Clear. I knew they partnered to provide 4G, but that was the extent of my knowledge on the subject.
Looks like our replies are a bit out of sync. damn you xda forums!

It wasn't the "idiots" on here. That's what sprint reps where telling people it was for. It was a discussion on here so we all could figure it out when it started.

Fair enough... some Sprint reps aren't really bright either... that's the same anywhere: some people are more informed than others.
Still, the press releases called it a premium data charge (not a 4G charge), the bill called it a premium data charge (not a 4G charge), and Sprint actually did officially state several times right after it was announced that it wasn't for 4G, but for higher-usage phones. I do hold XDA to a higher standard in general, but some don't know, which I understand.
I don't mean to completely condescend like I'm better than anyone (which I'm clearly not), but it's frustrating to me - as a former Sprint employee that very much loved the company - how badly misconstrued their pricing actions were. I understand that nobody wants higher prices, but Sprint is far and away the cheapest for what you get, and instead of getting praise for being the cheapest, they get hate for being only slightly cheaper after the fee. Again, look at their balance sheet if you think they're printing money. They're not.

It sounds like sprint takes good cared of their employees. The rep that helped me came from verizon to sprint to work. He didn't have anything good to say about verizon....lol. I know its not for 4g. I think they just used that as a reason at first but anywho don't matter we still hve to pay and I am more then happy to because of the great customer service I get. Plus its better then what other providers charge. I am saving about 50 a month when compared to my old verizon bills.

This fiasco can be directly blamed on dan hesse (CEO) of sprint. That over paid exec. went on record and put his foot in his mouth with a tv ad he put out saying "sprint would never charge extra for their new 4G services". So with that said, Dan was between a rock and a hard place with his penis in a jar of peanut butter.
I still feel he's ****ing nutts!

Hesse has turned the company around completely, and he's responsible, if not completely responsible for turning around their customer care, then at least responsible for hiring the right people that made it better.
I do remember being in my VP's office the day after Dan made that comment about the $10 fee, and he was a little frustrated since we were pretty much 100% sure at the time that we were launching the $10 fee, but as I said before, it wasn't a 4G fee.

Notice the super sluggish network speed?

Is this Sprint? The last few days everything is so slow. Internet, market just takes eons to load everything.
sprints 3g is horrid. theres a lot about sprint that worries me at the moment. the halting of wimax roll outs, clear is broke, sprint is virtually broke, the chance that sprint goes lte and ceases to deploy wimax to areas that they think dont need it...like my area. what happens to all the evo customers? the epic customers? the shift customers? if they unveil a nexus 4g at ctia, will it be lte or wimax?? i have to drive a long ways to get a poor wimax sig.
thankfully im not under contract.
in my opinion every sprint customer has a lot to contemplate if they dont like being taken advantage of by corporations. personally, i do not and i am but one of thousands joining the class action lawsuit over this $10 'premium data charge'. usually i wouldnt waste my time but i cant watch media on my evo the way it was meant to be viewed, in HQ. sprint refuses to acknowledge that their network is incapable. /EndMinorRant
I feel your pain. Watching videos even on youtube takes a long while to buffer.
In my area a speedtest on 3g (where I know 4g is available but MIUI 4g isnt working) i got .14mbps download .06mbps upload

Yea and on my status bar it says 1x where it usually says 3g in the stock rom. The stock rom lies? This is all to unfair. They say its 3g but its not, that's false advertising. Then they slap that 10 bucks extra for 4g when we don't even have 3g speeds. ABSURD!
Tailsthecat3, I'd like to join this lawsuit, how can I?
myself and everyone i know using sprint has called to complain.
my advice is to call sprint and complain about the slow speeds. file reports with the better business bureau.

I seriously doubt Sprint's coming out with LTE smartphones this summer. They've got to deploy their network evolution in order to do that, since it's what's going to allow sprint the flexibility to deploy multiple technologies interchangeably on the same towers. And they'd need to use their own bandwidth (probably in the 1.9 GHz range) to do so, since their 2.5 GHz is invested in clear. The 1.9 GHz spectrum is currently used for CDMA, but network evolution will allow them to move some of that onto the 800-900 MHz that will be vacated by iDEN, as well as make room on 1.9 with more efficient versions of CDMA 1x for voice. until those things start to happen, LTE is totally hypothetical.
and regarding the LTE rollout on Clear, it looks like Sprint and Clear are close to kissing and making up on the issue of wholesale data pricing for smartphones (I saw an article detailing that last week, I believe in the wall Street journal, but maybe elsewhere). That's been the major sticking point between Sprint and Clear, and should pave the way for Sprint to pump some cash into clear and get the ball rolling on more WiMax.
As for Sprint being "nearly broke", that doesn't even warrant a response. If you're really concerned about it, check out the actual numbers from their 2010 10k filing: http://biz.yahoo.com/e/110224/s10-k.html there's nothing that indicates that Sprint is "nearly broke"

i typed that they are virtually broke. not nearly broke. and if the vast subscription losses in the past are anything to go by, sprint is virtually broke(the gains are far less than the losses suffered). no they wont tell you that they have no money but when you see the losses are greater than the gains, in business, youre losing. if you see all the techs stationary, garaged vehicles, not working on or installing technology to roll out more wimax, that tells me that they cant pay, in layman's terms, the workers to work or build wimax stations.
not making this into a thing, it just worries me that wimax isnt gonna be rolled out to heavily populated areas that arent major cities. 23 miles south of boston is massachusetts' south shore. it is an extremely heavily populated area with much commerce...yet, unfortunately there is no wimax to be found.

You should definately look at that site if you think sprint is broke. All the dumb people attacking sprint with a class action law suite only hurt sprints ability to push 4G to you. Because of all the complainers about the $10 add on sprint is now charging it to all smart phone customers (to help offset the cost of the stupid lawsuit they have to deal with, and also to help make the network faster for all you complainers). Now everyone has to pay the $10 for because of the cry babies. Everyone wants things right now, realize if you live in the boondocks it takes longer to get what the city does. If you don't like your slow speeds living in the woods then move, or stop complaining and pay the $10 so your speeds can eventually get better. Or you can always be the prick that is *****ing and moaning when I walk into a store to get my phone fixed because I was the dumbass that bricked it trying to mod this sweet phone.

There's a difference between Sprint being broke or not, and the state of the WiMax rollout. Sprint doesn't operate or build the WiMax network, that's Clear. You'll notice I don't argue with your statement that clear is virtually broke (I don't necessarily agree either, but I feel the statement is accurate enough that there's no point splitting hairs). It's no secret that Clear needs immediate cash to fund the WiMax rollout - that's a problem that's plagued every independent wireless start up that's ever tried to roll out a nationwide network. Companies like Verizon or AT&T can use the cash flow that comes from all their other businesses to either directly fund or leverage their network rollouts. Stuff like local phone service or plain old long distance may not have a huge profit margin, and it's certainly isn't as exciting as 4G wireless, but it's great to have on hand when you're making a multi-billion dollar investment that's expected to take years to pay for itself.
Now, the question is: Where is Clear going to get that cash? the most likely source is Sprint, since Sprint owns 54% of Clear to begin with, and has the greatest vested interest in Clear's WiMax rollout. Is Sprint "virtually" or "nearly" broke? I'd be hard pressed to use either word, given that they're embarking on a 4-6 Billion dollar project (Network Evolution). Make no mistake, Sprint's trucks aren't sitting in a garage. Clear's may be, but that's all pending further investment from Sprint.
In fact, I'll go a bit further and venture into purely speculative areas; I say Sprint would ideally like to buy out Clear altogether. I think it was a mistake to divest Sprint's 2.5 GHz bandwidth to begin with, one that was only nessecary due to the Gary Forsee's gross mismanagement of the company in the 2-3 years following the Sprint/Nextel merger. had the company been in better hands then, they could have built out 4G themselves and none of this would have been the issue. If Sprint can get the cash together, I'm sure they'd be in a stronger position owning WiMax outright (and network evolution would make it much, much simpler to integrate clear's network into it's own).
My SpeedTest numbers are consistently at about 300 kbps during peak hours and about 1 mbps during none peak hours.
I am in the hinterland so I do not have any idea what 4G is like.
My 3G has been slow in san francisco =[

Sprint never charged $10 for 4G on the EVO, not since day one. The $10 fee was for both 3G and 4G. the reasoning was, a phone like the evo is going to get more use on either network, and the end user is going to get more value out of it. something like navigation, which works fine on 3G, is more valuable to you on a 4.3" screen becuase you can see it while you're driving. And all the various widgets and apps that use data in the background run better on a 1GHz processor.
but whether you buy that or not, the reason why Sprint charged the $10 fee for the EVO and EPIC then is the same reason why they charge it to all smartphones now (and really, the reason why anybody charges anyone else anything): because they CAN. If nobody wanted to pay the fee, and the EVO bombed, they'd have dropped it like a hot potato. But obviously enough people thought that overall value was good enough to pay for it, so they didn't. It's the same reason why Verizon's going to tiered data pricing this summer; most people won't mind it. If they start flocking to sprint for unlimited data, you can bet Verizon will raise their prices $10 and offer unlimited data.
As for *****ing about network speeds though, don't let me stop you there. whether you pay $10 extra or not it's your right as a consumer to ***** and moan. Personally I'm getting 2Mbps down on 3g every morning, but by 9 am or so it drops to less than 500Kbps, which is a pain in the neck IMO.

for the convenience of a 4.3" screen and 1GHz processor, you're buying an expensive phone with those specs (subsidized by your contract). for your 5GB/unlimited data you're paying a monthly data plan fee. the $10 premium data fee makes no sense in light of those facts. now it's for all smart phones (even non-4g), and sprint still isnt calling it what it is: an increase in data plan pricing. they just rolled it out for the evo to begin with because sprint customers were dying for a great android/4g phone and they could slip it in there relatively unnoticed.

For sure. Valid point. I'm just really bummed now because i just got this phone. I previously had the hero and I notice no difference with performance. Besides angry birds not being choppy... I wanted a better browsing experience and better video experience. I haven't even got to watch an HD video yet, because they wont load. It takes soooo long to download 1 thing at the market. Its bizarre. Plus the 720 HD recording ..I haven't seen that yet.

WE have been duped by Sprint people. Go to their website and you will notice the announcement of the iPhone 4Gs. You can even pre order it. This privilege was not given for the Samsung Galaxy S 2 ET4G.
Why...was this you say...it's obvious that Sprint knew it had made a deal to buy a **** load of IOS devices to secure this deal with Apple.so they didn't promote the galaxy ET4g. Now they have a big announcement tomorrow. They are going out of their way to let you pre order the iPhone as well.
Sad, and yes I feel they used us to get this deal, by canceling all perks, while giving us crappy service. My Photon has a red circle and no service, and I don't have a ET4G yet. Service has been terrible most of the summer all over NY and in mid town NYC.
If service was being interrupted to better service I may stick around, but not getting signal, failed messages, and paying for it and no credit with lies is unacceptable. Not being able to pre-order the phone I wanted because they made a deal with Crapple is also unforgivable. Price isn't the only thing that matters in a business relationship. It's I pay for service and expect to have it when I want it, not when you decide to give it.
Hell I was told by a customer service rep that I should be happy because I have had a lot of usage on my line. I then said yes that is true, but when I need my service to work it failed to deliver....I missed important calls. and meetings with people because of failed service.
People were telling me when they called the phone rang 3x's and hung up no message was able to be left. Others told me that they would get a network busy message please try again later. One rep verified this condition of calling me, and could not get through. The phone rang 3x's and the line just went dead when they called. I have been to tech centers, and have made many battery pulls, and software reboots, and finally I was told that there was a net work issue and they did not know when it would be cleared. Now when I call to talk about it they put me on hold no music and never come back to talk.
I just don't see it getting better, and when the next generation of phones IE Prime or what ever hits Verizon, and this is not cleared I am gone. When I feel I have to beg for service, or a credit for not receiving service after paying my bills for 15 years, and at one point having a $300 a month phone bills for business it's time to go.
My bill analysis shows that I average 240 msg a month, and average about 2g of data a month, and since I use my phone mostly for calls a Verizion 69.00 phone plan with 10 data, and 10.00 for data equals what I am paying now. So if this doesn't clear with the loss of perks I am outta here.lol
My service is better than ever...by far too. I never saw over 8Mbps download speed in Los Angeles on 4G and now....

Enjoy the larger bill on Verizon. It fast and rather reliable
Life is too short to complain on services you are not happy about. Great thing about America is that we have three major carriers
The sprint network can't compete with Verizon in "most" areas,
Can I have your phone when you leave? I've got a line with no phone....

When sprint cancelled premiere the writing was on the wall. It was on your august bill statement. In addition, sprint raised the admin fee by 50cents which invalidated every contract. Also on your bill statement.
Then sprint raised ETF from $200 to $350. Then they changed 30 day phone trials to 14 days. All this in september.
I am here on this board with an E4GT because of these changes - I had to get my final premiere upgrade prior to 10/2/2011. Otherwise I was fully planning on just waiting another month for nexus prime.
Now the E4GT has serious radio issues. Like OP, I had calls go to voicemail for hours at a time. Others have LOS, dropped calls, no signal bars, phone refuses to roam, etc.
Sprint's CEO said that 54% of sprint customer churn is due to not having an iphone. Thats a pretty hard fact to not pay attention to.
It is clear sprint is putting all eggs in one basket - the iphone basket. Sprint has lost money for 15 straight quarters. This will either save sprint or ruin sprint.
I've been with sprint 10 years now, and im no iphone fan. THe writing is on the wall: We'll let you keep your android devices and stay on our network, but we really don't care about you now. Of course I knew all this over a month ago and I was still willing to sign a 2 year contract in september for the Epic 4g touch. That was before all the LOS issues arose.
We'll see what the next 2 years brings. But the days of customer loyalty perks, retention plans, etc are clearly over.
I just switched from verizon to sprint, so I can give you a good preview of what to expect.
First of all, the service is top notch, and the lte speeds were incredible - I regularly got over 20 mbps in my area, many times close to 30. Of course, keep in mind that their lte service is fairly new, and at the time they only had 3 expensive phones that could use it, so that will likely change as more people upgrade and the network gets saturated.
So why did I leave this awesome service? Price. Everything across the board is way more expensive - service and phones. I paid $50 more for a Droid Charge than I did for my E4GT, and that phone isn't even in the same league. For our family plan with unlimited text, only 700 minutes, 2 data plans and 2 other phones, it was $230 a month. Our kids wanted smartphones too, but to add 2 more data plans would have put our bill up to $300. I'm not broke, but not rich either, and that cost is pretty hard to justify.
Also, keep in mind that all those policies Sprint just changed are the same policies Verizon has - 14 day return, $350 etf (even after being way overcharged on the phones up front), and no more New Every Two program.
The only carrier I've found with good pricing and great coverage (in my area) is Tmo, and I almost jumped to them, but no way in hell I want to risk being an att customer again.

Amen. I am tired of flipping on Roam Control and dealing on 1x every time I enter a building. What good is unlimited 3g if it is slow as molasses, and 4g which is spotty and hardly ever works indoors? At this point, I am off contract and if Prime comes to VZW and is not full of bloat I may be gone.

Others were told to "try back later network busy". This can only get worse if iPhone is coming. Is T-Mobile the devil?

I have recently been thinking about switching over to t-mo from sprint, but it seems everywhere i look and everyone i talk to says they are really bad.
their value plans seem great and they have a nice selection of phones, so i'm really torn.
so, mighty t-mobile subscribers, mind sharing your opinions? experiences?
I can't complain, I'm really happy with T-Mobile. Im with them for 4 years now, never had any type of problems. Won't be switching anytime soon.
Do the switch, you won't regret it.

I love T-mobile the speeds and coverage are great in Arizona. The only thing that is a drag is the data caps. But even when you reach the cap you can still use internet albeit at edge speeds. Other than that you won't regret it. The caps have different price ranges. 100mb, 2gb, 5 gb, and 10gb.
I switched from att and won't go back . I guess it's all in who you talk to . Someone with great coverage will say they rock . Someone with bad coverage will say that they suck .

I love Tmobile, I've been with them since Voice Stream, and they haven't done anything to me. Coverage is pretty good in my areas too.
been on tmo for about 3 yrs and cant say i have much negativity to speak customer service is good, plan prices are great and probably has the best android phone selection out, I do see you're in fl like me so to be honest for coverage it depends on where you're at my worst reception has probably been in ocala would have 0 bars in some areas but would walk a few steps n have full bars but the great thing about tmo has been the wifi calling option which i so hope to god they hurry and update it to this phone fast, that's in case you don't have a strong signal but do have internet wifi where you are it'll switch and use the wifi signal instead of you're weak carrier signal
i love them because there affordable and pretty much everything else is great too.
Over a decade here and the only problem will be if AT$T is allowed to buy them out.

I switched to T-Mo from Sprint too & I don't regret it. I do sometimes miss being on my mom's family plan & only having a $45 phone bill every month, but my data speeds on T-Mo are at least 10 times faster and I get MUCH better signal almost everywhere I go so it's worth it. I also underestimated the convenience of switching phones with a mere sim swap, and I can't say a SINGLE bad thing about T-Mo's customer service either. Every time I call I get an english-speaker who is polite & helpful, and who doesn't feel the need to call me by my first name all the time or waste time thanking me profusely after every sentence. With Sprint, half of the reps were rude, and the other half were either completely clueless or else they had such unintelligible accents that I was better off going to a store if I had a problem. The only bad thing about T-Mo is the data caps, but I've heard you can get around those by using a different APN(which seems to be working so far, and I guess I'll find out for sure if I get throttled this month). Sprint does have unlimited data, but its SO s l o w...
But- it all depends which service is best in your area.
I switched from T-Mobile (after like 7 or 8 years) being with them to goto Sprint to get the Evo 3D. Was the biggest mistake I ever made. T-Mobile was always willing to subsidize me a phone every year with customer loyalty. Sprint had 25kbish download in 90% of my area, they tore up me and my wife's contract after being with then for about 1 1/2 months. Came back to T-mobile, and couldn't be happier!
Sprint's data network is garbage, and the company itself is far more evil than T-Mobile.. look at their past practices. Getting rid of the Premier program. Offering unlimited under their prepaid brands at really low prices only to cap it and raise the prices later. $10 bogus premium data fee. etc. SLOW 3G, lies about 4G WiMAX being their choice over LTE.. we all knew WiMAX was going the wayside and now it finally has.
I have had all tge major carriers in the past 3 years and tmobile is definitely the best for me here in buffalo. Its cheap. Their data is actually fast unlike sprint and verizon (sprint 3g speeds are a joke and so is wimax).
Also even after tge merger was abnounced, they keep building new towers and expanding their network
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
T-Mobile is great man. I've been with them 9yrs already and feel im treated fair. I'd like cheaper prices, but this is America, land of the fee, home of the slave.
Deebo took your bike too?
7 years here, and no real complaints. I've lived in major cities the whole time, so coverage has been fine. I do notice that it can be more spotty in rural areas, but not so much as to frustrate me. And the prices are great.
Look into the Value plans. You don't get a "subsidized" price on the phone (so you end up paying full retail, though it can be split up over many, many months), but even then, because Value plans are $20 less per month than Classic plans (which "subsidize" the phone price), you still pay less per month with the Value plan and end up saving overall in the long run. (I put "subsidize" in quotes because this system makes it transparent that with standard plans, you're not really getting the phone for cheaper... the company just takes it out of you piece by piece each month).
For some reason, this concept is difficult for some people to grasp (think average not-so-bright customer who you often see paying their bill in the t-mo store), and they just think it's ridiculous to pay retail for the phone, even in divided payments. I encourage anyone looking at starting a new plan on T-mo or renewing a contract to take 2 minutes and calculate your total cost over contract with each plan.
stick with Sprint and use the employee discount. $109 for family plan and $10 premium for smartphones
I had a great plan with sprint. 3 free landline #'s unlimited, 25% discount, and unlimited text data, 750 minutes and 200 extra bonus minutes.
I still decided to leave them this month because they suck that much. I was with sprint for 7 years. They just have crappy service. The data was never good since the Evo dropped. I used to get 2mb down and lately I was getting less than 50k download. They weren't willing to fess up on why this was happening and kept saying I should be getting bad service. I also noticed that where ever I went, I never had good service and my battery would drain because it was barely holding on to the connection with the towers. I have had every one of sprints smartphones and although they have a good lineup. Service is just not good and data is the worst I have expereinced other than Metro PCS which is 1x. I recently moved and went from bad service to horrible service. I couldn't get calls and my data would time out due to being so slow. Called sprint to see if they would cancel me and they said NO and you have to pay a cancellation fee. I gladly did and not looking back. It's great over here with t-mobile. Data is capped but it's fast and reliable.
Sprint is also going to take away unlimited broadband. It's just a matter of time for their crappy data service to be throttled also. Check out their Iphone forums and see the amount of complaints regarding data. 60+ pages of complaints. The iphone is going to make a already hurting service and just destroy it.
I switched from Tmobile to sprint because my contact was over and my wife was on sprint. we had nothing but problems. So we ended or context and switched back to Tmobile. Not a single problem since.Tmobile is not the devil, sprint is.

Federal-Univ Serv Assess Non-LD ???

I know the Sprint Surcharges are just fees Sprint wants to charge their customers because they are too greedy to pay it on their own as a benefit to their customers. But I am curious as to what the Federal-Univ Serv Assess Non-LD is because I have not been able to find any exact information on it. I tried chatting with a Rep but she could not give me any real answer on what it is other than a blanket statement saying its based on taxes Sprint has to pay. Im paying $7.21 for something I have no idea about.
Under the Government Fees & Taxes, I also see a California State-Univ Lifeline Serv Charge for $1.21. I need answers
I also need answers too. Every month the "Federal Taxes" are high and high.
I also have my employee discount and when change the $130.00 for two line to $110.00 first line and $19.99 the second my bill go high again.
When I get my phone the bill was $141.90 now $151.50. Yes $10!!!
Im starting to hate Sprint, but they are the only with unlimited data.

Does no one really care about this?
call your congressman...
it is a federally asses fee. although sprint is the one to choose to pass this along to you, it is because it is assesed to them. would you feel better if they just said that your plan is actually 139.99 instead and still put it toward paying this fee?
30 seconds with google came up with this government page that explains what these fees are:
http://transition.fcc.gov/cgb/phonebills/samplePhonebill.html
As far as whether sprint should pay it for you, if they did that, who's money would they use to pay it? They'd have to get it from somewhere, so it would come from money they charge you for you service. So, instead of burying the costs they incur, they list it.
They could pull it out of the pure profit $10/mo data fee they charge, among all the other fees they charge to double the advertised price. Straight Talk and Cricket seem to do just fine under $70/mo without all the bogus fees. Perhaps they should ask these companies how they can afford to do it at half the price.

Trolololwut? Sprint has been operating at a net LOSS of hundreds of millions of dollars for 5 years now. I don't know where you get the idea that Sprint is hoarding a bunch of "profits." Even AT&T and Verizon, with all their luxurious capital (and often $20-30/month higher average bills, might I add) are still burning through it to build their own completely spectrum-segregated LTE networks on top of maintaining and improving their 3G networks. That cost billions upon billions every year, and Sprint is a very distant 3rd. Then you have to factor in the money that they have to give back to Lightsquared for backing out of their deal to buy LTE spectrum using satellite coverage (basically the spectrum satellites were interfering with some GPS devices and satellites, so the FCC denied them approval). Oh, and don't forget the $4 Billion that Sprint had to pay Apple to get the iPhone for the next 3 years.

Oh, I guess you didn't know that Cricket and Straight Talk don't actually own their network infrastructure. They rent out the towers from those with the resources to build them, as in AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and SPRINT. That's why the cheapo carriers can afford to offer those low prices, they just thrown the major carriers some money. Of course, the trade-off is that service sucks outside of the major cities, so good luck actually making calls in between. Sprint, however, doesn't have the luxury of bumming off of Verizon's towers, you know, because they're direct competitors on a national scale.
Honestly, how the hell do you think this phone company can afford to charge me $85/month for unlimited EVERYTHING and still build/maintain a fast and consistent 3G and 4G network? If you want to pick a fight, pick it with AT&T and Verizon, but since you're on the one US carrier with a couple BILLIONS of dollars of debt, you'd best sit down and appreciate your relatively cheap bill.
I pick a fight with Sprint because they offer unlimited everything, on a 1x connection that's slower than dialup, and then charge an additional $10/mo for that luxury because I have an Android phone. It takes less time to call someone than for the email to send after I hit send. They can afford to offer unlimited everything for $85/mo because they charge $130/mo for it, and are not capable of providing what they sell.
At least when I had Verizon, they warned me that 3g may not work in my area. But it did, and still does, as well as their recently rolled out LTE. Sprint? Nothing planned in the next 6 months. Perhaps Sprint should consider leasing tower space if they want to remain relevant over the next 10 years. Right now, they can't compete on coverage nor connectivity.

Im sorry but that's bull. If Sprint was doing so badly, they wouldnt be here for this long and they wouldnt be adding LTE or spending money on the Iphone or anything like that. You know they are profiting or else why would they continue to run their business?
Also, At&T and Verizon may be spending billions on the LTE network but they are also making billions on top of knowing LTE will bring in more customers.

That Sprint chose to pay. They saw a good marketing move when they saw it and sure it cost them a bit more than they wanted (or did it?) but think about how fast they will make that money back with all the transfers to Sprint's unlimited plan?

Whose money? Start with Sprint's new CEO Marcelo Claure: "Sprint will pay Claure $1.5 million a year in salary, on top of a $500,000 signing bonus, and provide potential performance-based bonuses that could be twice his salary or larger, according to a company filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He also will receive potential stock and options awards worth $24 million when granted to him, the filing said."

Is it worth staying with Sprint?

I don't use unlimited data anymore. Ever since I got a home wifi router, I use less than 200MB data a month.
I pay $75 a month for the cheapest, employer discounted plan with Sprint.
It seems like ATT would offer $40 (cheapest phone) + $20 (300MB data) - employer discount (I don't know how much). So, I'd be paying a much lower monthly charge with ATT.
Or so it seems. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Plus, I'll be getting One X (s4) just after it was released, enjoying a new gen phone.
Your thoughts?
Sounds like a no brainer.

Sounds like the smarter move to just go with ATT. You'd save a few bucks, which add up over time. I'd do it if you don't need/use the unlimited data.
I think it makes sense for you to switch if your cancellation with Sprint isn't too painful. If there are multiple phones on the account, multiply the cancellation fees.

20 for 300mb of data? That's highway robbery. I hope you don't want to send or receive texts because that's another charge. ATT nickle and dime their customers to death. If you want cheap, and it's available, go with a prepay account or go with metropcs. From your explanation, it doesn't look like you're going to get insurance for your phone. You say you'll be getting a one x when you go there yet you don't want to use data on the network. What's the use of getting one of the top of the line phones with LTE when you want to only get the 300mb data per month option? To me, that doesn't make much sense. I'm assuming you have a e4gt now. Why don't you get a free basic phone from ATT and use your e4gt on wifi only? You can save another 20 bucks by not getting data on a free phone. I don't care what you do, that's your decision. Some people have left only to find out the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence.
Also how is call service? My friend gets all data no phone. And even data is comparable to everyone else.
When I had att my calls would drop in the same spots sprint calls would not even in between cities

Just remember the AT&T One X has a locked down bootloader. I worked for AT&T as a Field Technician for several years. I had to constantly use my personal phone because of AT&T's awful network.
Look into T-Mobile if you really need to change. They should save you some money.

Also, I currently have a BB through AT&T for work and the signal is so spotty I just use Exchange on my E4GT. My boss has an iPhone that constantly drops calls.
As far as T-mo goes, I had them for 8 years in KC and dropped 2 calls the whole time. Maybe look at an unlocked GNex for 399 and go with one of their pre-paid plans.

In all honesty, every US carrier sucks. I've used and sold every major post-paid carrier except US Cellular (although I've yet to hear anything good about them).
AT&T doesn't need you, and they'll make sure you know that when coming to them with problems. Their coverage is shoddy, the network goes down frequently and their bills are loaded with unexplainable fees and charges.
Verizon has decent coverage but they suffer from network congestion. Their phones are priced way too high and they lack services for the price paid. They also look for any and every reason to charge you additional fees or kick you out with a termination fee.
T-Mobile has terrible coverage and an awful call/text network (need to send texts a dozen times to go through). Their prices are great and their customer service is okay. Decent selection of phones. Great choice for someone who doesn't text, use a lot of data or travel.
Sprint has pretty good coverage, but data speeds are pretty bad. Even corporate management makes jokes on a daily basis about it. They originally had fantastic plan pricing, but are slowly getting more and more like big red by adding on fees, tweaking discounts to rake in more cash and subtly changing the ToS to impose artificial limits on the term "unlimited". I firmly believe that the only reason Sprint's customer service was rated #1 is a 50/50 split between customer care lying to the customers and store reps guilt tripping customers into giving only perfect scores on surveys.
Seeing as Boost and Virgin will be picking up Sprint's WiMax network, I would see no reason to stay with Sprint were my service actually costing me anything. Funny that my phone is free yet I still catch myself thinking up ways to weasel out of my contract.

I've rarely done surveys. I block their phone number when they call too. I love when my gf is a smart ass towards them. Csr: Can you say I helped you resolve your issue today? Her: I don't know, I'll have to wait and see if it works now. I'll sometimes feel like being a troll and score them the lowest marks.
Sprint 3g in my area is some short not even 3g !

I suppose all the carriers are like that. In some places they have good or acceptable service, and other places its horrible.

Those survey probably help determine how much a kid with a bunch of student debt gets paid. Wtg, ****. Really funny.

Why are you even considering that change? Go to boost mobile. $50 period. All unlimited, no contract.

20 for 300mb of data? That's highway robbery.

More like....airwave robbery. YEEEEAAAAHHHH.
But seriously, if you aren't taking full advantage of the unlimited data and the competitors network in your area is better, I would definitely switch. Personally, my data speeds are so terrible I don't even bother using my phone off of Wifi. Yet my girlfriends AT&T SGS2 hauls ass pretty much everywhere she goes.

I said this all the time to my SAR, when he started being a **** about CSAT averages. It is easy to brag about it, when you are padding and stuffing the stats. It is such a snake oil salesman tactic, and I encouraged my customers to answer honestly. I will never beg for a five.
