I have a defy rooted 2.1-update1 JORLA_U3_6.14.5
Blur_Version.6.14.5.MB525.AmericaMovil.en.BR stock....
Can I update direct to Pay's Rom ?
Following the step by step in the pay's thread will I be able to install the rom ?
This is my firt time doing this procedure, thanks.
What do you mean with "direct"?
If you follow the steps Pay posted in his Thread you have to wipe, flash 3.4.2 with RSD, Root and after that install Pays Mod.
You can only install it "directly" if you're already on 3.4.2 Froyo FW with root and System Recovery!
btw. There are some things you have to check before flashing!
- Make sure your Battery is full.
- Install USB Driver for Defy from Moto's HP
- Use RSD Lite in Admin-Mode
- Always wipe BEFORE flashing a new FW (Volume Down + On/Off -> then wipe data...)
After flashing the new FW root your phone with SuperOneClick (Activate USB Debugging (hopefully the same in english)), install Clockwork Mod (Disable USB Debugging if you want to reboot in recovery mode!)

Hi mr_rocha!
Attention!
If you know nothing about flashing Custom Firmwares or Nandroid Backups I strongly suggest you read some How To's to get some knowledge about what can go wrong and what to do, when certain circumstances happen.
If something goes wrong your Defy can be bricked and it's useless!
So I won't tell you right now a short way to install Pays Mod, because there are so many things I would forget to mention, that the chance something goes wrong is very high.
All I can tell you is that just installing Pays Mod WILL brick your phone, because the wrong Bootloader is installed. You need to flash 3.4.2 Froyo FW at first to use Pays Mod!
Really take some time (about 60-90 minutes) and read 3, 4 How To's and most of your questions will be answered!

Hi there!
I'm very new to this forum and first want to thank you for your efforts on the Defy and your support for "beginners/noobs".
I hope you can help me too
Well, I managed to flash 2.51 without having a fully working backup of the stock firmware. Since I can not flash back to 2.21 I wanted to ask if someone could provide me with a clean stock rom of 2.21 DE,AT,CH. A 2.34 backup rom would help, too.
Thanks in advance,
piz
Edit: To specify this: I need a nandroid backup, not the sbf file.
Hi
I would be pleased to give a copy of Stock Rom DE, AT, CH,
If you tell me step by step how to backup my rom
I have all ready rooter the phone
What do I have to use to make a backup?
I’m new to anroid …
He cool!
Ok, lets see, first you would have to root your phone. Its possible that you void your warranty by doing this. (But, since you can still flash a fresh firmware nobody has to know). There is an App which does the rooting automaticly. Secondly you need to do the backup. For that theres an app which installs the recovery system and boots into it.
The above steps are described by Sorensiim in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893291
Youd have to do steps 1,2 and 4.
(the other steps in his thread are very usefull/interesting, too. but make shure you have a backup before starting to play around with your phone that "deep" - i didnt )
In that last boot menu you should select "factory reset" and "advanced/clear dalvik cache" before doing the backup, to make shure theres no personal information left.
Et voila, you have the backup. It sits on your sdcard in the folder /goapkrev/backup/ and is named after the time of creating.
If you have any further questions Id be glad to help you. I could provide some upload space too.
Big thanks in advance!
(im off to a party now - back tomorrow)
Edit: Must have overread that youve already rooted So just do step 2 and 4 from Sorensiims thread.
I have just bought a defy and want to root it. Im not too keen on Motoblur and want to get rid of it if it is possible! However, I have never rooted a phone in my life. I have noticed that there are a few roms knocking around for this phone.Cyanogenmod and Gingerbread Android 2.3.4. Which is the best one? I will also need an idiot proof tutorial if anyone would be good enough to point me in the right direction. I would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance guys but Im a bit.....

Flashing a custom rom like Cyanogenmod will remove the t-mobile logo at bootup.
Before you start flashing a rom I'd recommend you to first browse some of the threads and to read some tutorials and FAQ's.

I assume I need to root my phone first and foremost? I will use SuperOneClick as this looks quiet easy to do, even for me.
Oops I forgot to add thgat my defy is on 2.51. Will this be a problem??? I want to be sure that I dont screw up my new phone. Cheers
I suggest you go to a stock 2.2.2 via MSU or RSD Lite. For your locale. Try it for a while (- the GB retail is very good). You don't need to root to do that, and it is fairly easy and safe.
You could then try and remove the Blur stuff and some bloat after rooting. Plenty of guidance around. This will increase your familiarity and experience, which you lack by your own admission.
If this doesn't give you what you want, then try a Custom ROM. Note that no 2.3 Custom ROM presently provides a "100%" experience. It may be that you need something they cannot yet deliver... I'm not sure why you desperately need to do this, not having tried 2.2?
Take things one step at a time and don't rush.

I will take your advice. What do I need to do to remove branding and bootlogo? I assume MSU stands for Motorola Software Update. What is RSD lite? How do I use either of them to remove the network branding? I know these questions are probably seem idiotic to you guys as you are the experts but this is my first adroid and I need to start at the beginning so any help with this is very much appreciated.
You have to learn all the basics at the development forum threads before making any changes to your phone.
I suggest you to root your phone, install 2nd Init (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212) and make a full backup before you get the party started.
You can debrand you phone (including the bootlogo) if you install a custom rom.
The questions you've asked are already answered on the forum in a better way than I could do.
So start trying to use the search tools and don't forget to read the forum rules.
I'm a newbie here too, and following these advices I didn't get in trouble yet...
I still suggest, as you are new to Android and phone hacking, that you take small steps and learn about Android before hacking. I'm not sure why you have a branded phone - why not just get a retail one?

It was cheaper than buyiong an unbranded version. Im reading up on it now and I think Im starting to pick things up a little. Android seems to be a lot more complicated than an iphone but Im getting there.................slowely

I made a mistake, the firmware version is 2.2.2. Right where do I start. I think I will debrand it first.
I followed this to debrand:

Everything works fine.
I have now debranded it. RSDLite wouldnt work on my windows 7 desk top through. I followed the debranding tutorial to the letter but my defy wouldnt show up. I used my Vista laptop and it worked first time. It was actually quite easy. I do have another question though. I have debranded my defy and no longer have the t-mobile boot logo on start up. However, when I go into my menu, I do still have t-mobile widgets. How do I get rid of them?? I have tried dragging and dropping them into the waste bin but as soon as I got back into the menu, the widgets have returned. Its not a big issue but I would like to get rid of them if possible. Thanks in advance guys (again)
most probly u flashed a t-mobile sbf..other retail sbf wont show t-mobile widgets..anyways u can remove them with root explorer..its quite easy..

I flashed it with the UK Retail .SBF , version 2.2.2 service flash. Because I was already on 2.2.2. I went for the same version number. Im sure you klnow the one but here is the link.
http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy
Would it do any harm if I went for another version??
no no..2.2.2 is fine...anyways use root explorer to get rid of those crap..
the best way to clean install is to enter Stock Recovery, then do "Wipe data/Factory reset" and "Wipe cache" and then flash an sbf...this will wipe "everything" and will install freshly..

How do you enter stock recovery? Do you mean on the device itself?
Edit............Its ok, Ive susssed it out. I had to press trhe volume keys up and down simultaniously. This stuff is not that difficult to do once you get started and read through everything.
Can anyone give me some pointers please ?
My kids have had Defys (green lense) since last christmas. Rooted them straight away but have never tried to flash them.
So ... rooted ... green lense .... running 2.1 (!) .....
Looking to flash them a gingerbread ROM. now ive done this loads on my HTC Desire and Asus Transformer so im ok with the principle ... but loads of the ROMs for the Defy are suggesting other methods rather than flash the zip via CWM. Some are saying I need to go to Froyo first ?!
Can anyone recommend an easy (stable ish) Gingerbread ROM to flash from the current state of these Defys ??
Cheers.

cheers ... but is that going to mean a flash to froyo first ? is there a preferred froyo rom to flash to first ??
unfortunately yes no way to get around it
the first time i tried i was very confused too. then i found out you don't have to worry about cwm, it's included in the 2nd init. all you need after rooting is to install 2nd init, reboot into recovery and do your tricks from there. it is recommended to wipe data/cache and dalvik cache first before choosing "select zip from sd" to install your preferred rom.
and yes, you need to goto froyo first. gingerbread apparently is not compatiple to eclair from my understanding. the recommended froyo rom to use is Nordic, but i just update to my carrier's official stock froyo (telstra, Australia). worked perfectly.
you can follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798
there's only one thing missing from that instruction, basebandswitcher. read up about it and make sure you select the correct baseband for your carrier. otherwise you might get weak or no cell signal.
there are better and simpler instructions elsewhere if you google for it, but i guess i'm not supposed to refer anything outside this forum
just as a note, beware that if you flash a froyo sbf, yo will most likely not going to be able to restore it to 2.1 even with another SBF ( it's a thing mototola is doing now, called e-fuse )
just be informed of that.
cheers guys. got so used to flashing Desire and now Transformer it seems like its a whole new world on the Defy

same here dude, i m from india and i m cuming from galaxy 3 but noob at defy. The most irritating thing here is that u cant go back to previous version or may be it looks messy bcoz i have not done it yet.
Please guys, read this thread before starting threads. All your queries are explained in detail here.
[GUIDE] All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide
Please help me with following since I read a lot and bit confused
1) Can I proceed with installing a custom rom, without flashing radio (I have proper signal, and remaining) ?
2) Is a downgrade necessary to root the phone since my build is 2.37.720.3
3) I have summarised the following , Please let me know right or wrong
a) Follow a rooting guide
b) root phone without flashing radio
c) download custom rom
d) flash custom rom
?
4) do custom roms have continuous auto focus for camera ?
5) will too many messages and stuff on memory card affect performace on stock roms ?
I would appreciate if some one couse spend 2-3 min to reply
I have gone through many thread regarding rooting, and had just few doubts above, hence the thread
radio flashing is not necessary for installing a new custom ROM
there are some good guides available along with some tools for rooting, follow them properly. once you root and able to go to the recovery mode, then you are free to install the ROMS that you want, no need of radio flash, unless you want to experiment with it. but avoid it at this stage.
You can try some camera appls if not happy with custom ROM camera apps.
^^ thanks a lot for your reply
But is downgrading necessary for rooting ??

Hey!
Im pretty new into this subject about rooting and install custom Roms to your phone on android but i was thinking i should give it a try!
I have succesfully unlocked the bootloader but i dont know what i shall do next. I want to install this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/development/xperia-z1c-resurrection-remix-lollipop-t2996231[/url]
What shall i do first? Ive tried reading a couple of guys but i dont really know what i shall do next, as far as i know you should unlock the bootloader (already done) and then root the phone (i've read this guide and it seems quite good: http://techchomps.com/root-14-4-a-0-157-android-4-4-4-kitkat-on-xperia-z1-z1-compact-and-z-ultra/) and then i can install a custom rom? Shouldn't you install a custom recovery like clockworkmod first? When and how do i install that?
Im currently at firmware 14.4.a.0.157 btw.
I have understood that you might brick you device if you do this and that's the last thing i want too do, as im studying student i dont really have enough money for a new phone/reparation.
I hope i dont seem to confusing to you
Thanks in advance!

this is all you need, read it carefully
p.s. i hope you backuped your DRM-keys before you unlocked your bootloader, otherwise they went away and never come back...

shutdown your device!
At boot, once you feel the phone vibrate and while you see the green led burn:
- press VOL-UP for PhilZ Touch;
- press VOL-DOWN for TWRP.
- flash the custom rom you want (but copy the zip to your extSD card before)

Ive tried that but i dont get into recovery. Do i need to have a extSD card before install the recovery? I also dont see any green led burning. I feel the phone vibrate shortly after i pressed and hold the power button, but no green led.
When i installed the recovery i had the phone powered on, was that right? It said in the guide it would restart but it didn't.
I dont think ext card is necessary, it is rather option.
Question:
Did you install both zips - installer and flashable?
If yes - I'd try other version.
