Hi, I'm trying to install alphaRev because from what I've read it enables s-off and provides a modified partition table. Currently I run
Oxygen rc7
Clockwork recovery 2.5.0.7
Hboot 0.93
AlphaRev says to download the alpharev zip file for oxygen, remake it and put it on my sd, which I've done. Then it says to go into hboot and install. How do I install the alphaRev zip from my sd in hboot!?
Any help!
The initial S-OFF needs to be done via a bootable CD, you then change the partition table after this should you need to. You need to read the instructions closer

hmm, OK. It's quite tricky for me as I have fairly rubbish dyslexia and so I get confused when reading
What advantages does S-Off provide? I will try that now and report back
If you don't know what it does don't even do it! Read up on it more before doing anything as it can potentially brick your phone with no chance of repair

I was less interested in the S-Off option, but wanted the modified partition table that AlphaRev offers over the stock HBoot. Apparently it providers a fair bit more space for apps on the phone. But, alas, I got Alpharevs flashing program and it worked fine. I am now running AlphaRev Hboot 0.93.0001 with S-Off (well, from what I think I read, S-Ignored!)
So, next question is, how do I get around to installing the modified partition tables provided on the AlphaRev site, or did this automatically get done as a part of the flashing process I have just done? I'm not trying to be lazy, I have honestly read around, it's just quite confusing (especially for me) and I find it easier when someone explains it in Layman's terms!
Direct from alpharev.nl and must be done in Fastboot:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)
4) 'fastboot reboot-bootloader'
5) 'fastboot erase cache'
6) Boot recovery, wipe everything and restore.

Thank a lot for detail introduce
NP. As I said, it was copied directly from the alpharev site. Keep in mind that this can possibly brick your phone if the checksum doesn't match or something goes wrong during the flash.

Ok, I didn't actually get that far I did this technique:
You can also download the corresponding PB99IMG zipfile, put it on your sdcard, and rename it to PB99IMG.zip. Then start the phone in HBOOT mode (VolDown+POWER) to flash the HBOOT without a PC.

I downloaded "PB99IMG_bravo_oxygen.zip" renamed it to "PB99IMG.zip". I booted into Hboot, it asked me if i'd like to update, so I said yes which it did... now... it's getting stuck on the Alpharev why so serious splash screen.
I wonder if I just bricked my phone..............................
Did you just reboot it after the flash? I'm not sure how to flash it via the SD card but something tells me that you still need a wipe and reinstall. Your ROM might not fit in the new partition. but I honestly have no idea, just trying to give you possible ideas. Wait till someone else can confirm.
So, yah, effectively looks like i've done something bad. AlphaRev installed fine and s-off is ok. Just the last steps I took to install a custom partition seem to have gone... wrong...
Basically, turning it on as normal and it gets stuck on the AlphaRev "why so serious" splash screen. It can operate fine in Hboot and Recovery mode... so what's the best way out of this mess?
EDIT: More info!
So, after flashing AlphaRev it displayed:
--Alpharev--
Bravo PVT1 Ship S-Off
Hboot 0.93.0001
etc...

I then used the SD Card flash means of install the Oxygen Partition table through Hboot. After this is when it gets stuck on the AlphaRev splash screen. It works in Hboot and Recovery. In the former it now shows
AlphaRev Oxygen
Bravo PVT1 Ship S-Off
HBOOT 0.93.1000

It looks to me like the flash was successful, you just need to wipe and reinstall the ROM. In this case, Oxygen or Redux..the only 2 that will fit in that partition.

You know what, you're right (I think). I have been an absolute spanner and forgot to actually re-install Oxygen after installing the new partition. Just re-did RC7 (thank the lord I still had the zip on my SD) and we're back alive again.
I was scared, oh so scared

Well, there you go, I learnt from a mistake. It can be scary when things don't go to plan, but i'm quite happy I managed to get it all installed and running. I just have to work out how to change the splashscreen to something else.
I saw the instructions about fastboot... but I don't exactly understand where the terminal is that I have to use. Do I connect it to my PC is fastboot mode and use CMD?
Yes, you use CMD. There is a tutorial for Fastboot telling you all the stuff you need to install to get it up and running. For flashing a new Splash screen you should look into the Android Flasher utility somewhere on XDA. It's basically Fastboot with a GUI so you can easily flash HBOOT, custom splash, radios and something else that I forget.
This is why you READ before doing anything. You've been lucky...

Hmmm... well I got the flashing program, but whilst it has changed the splash screen... it's not to the one I defined! Gone is old Why So Serious man... but he's been replaced by some little green men riding skateboards.
I was trying to use this splash!

Might be the wrong format/height/size. Im'a fiddle more. I'll fix it until it breaks.
Maybe just try it again or ask in that the Android Flasher thread. I had no problem having it flash my image. Is the image the proper file format?
Think it needs to be BMP.
Got it working fine, was the wrong dimensions I believe. However, the app itself is about as stable as a woman on her period. It crashes every few minutes with unhandled exceptions

Hello everyone, i'm a new (but technical inclined) italian android user
I've just bought a Desire Z that I like a lot!
I've read for weeks many guide in the development section of this forum and i'm pretty sure what i'm going to do rooting my device.
But, being this phone my first android, I have few questions:
After doing the rooting process explained here, gfree script should create a backup of a partition (can you tell me what partition is). Using that guide i'm having a permanent-root + S-OFF . My question is: How can I come back with a device un-rooted and s-on?
I saw there are some ROMs that requires and Engineering HBOOT. If I install that HBOOT (after a Nandroid Backup) i'll be able to restore my DZ to the original HBOOT?
This question is about custom recovery. If i install the Clockwork recovery, how can i restore the original Recovery?
Please be patient with me and my plain english. Can you answer me explaining step by step what should i do?
Thank You very much in advance
No One? Did i requested too much?

The Vision, like other Android phones, has an internal storage memory card (the built-in phone memory, not referring to the plug-in SD card here). That is divided into separate "partitions", which to Android look like individual devices on their own. So this "partition" is one sub-section of the built-in internal storage memory.
gfree can now un-do what it has done, without requiring you to use that backup of the partition. But it's handy to keep it anyway, just in case. If necessary you can run a simple one-line command (using "dd") to copy back the partition backup (dd copies from one file/device to another).
The exact steps to un-root and S-ON depend on exactly which ROM you're on and trying to go back to, and how you got the root/S-OFF, but it's pretty straightforward and it's no problem to revert.

The eng hboot is useful because it gives you additional flashing options, like fastboot. It also allows you to upgrade your radio.
Yes, you can easily restore the stock hboot either by flashing a complete stock ROM, or just flashing the hboot on its own.

You can flash a new recovery image (e.g. a stock one) from fastboot if you have the eng hboot installed, through "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". This will need you to have adb setup on your phone, fastboot comes along with adb.
First of all thankyou for replying
I think I got it but i might need some explainations..

Ok.. so, for example, if I'm running the stock ROM with Sense and froyo (rooted and S-OFF) and i want to go back to a stock ROM un-rooted and S-ON will I have to dd the partition backup or I just need to type in a Terminal Emulator on the device
Code:
./gfree -s on
and reboot the phone? (loosing in this way Temp-Root)?

The recovery.img you're talking about is the img file that I have on the SD card after doing a Nandroid Backup?
What i can't understand (cause i've never tried) is if I do a complete backup with Clockwork will I have a backup of the stock rom (with ALL parts of it) or something else.
Thanks a lot for your patience
I'm only replying for the last question:
To restore your stock recovery image, you have to flash it from either fastboot or a rooted ROM (with the help of the flash_image command). You can get the stock recovery from the official RUU your phone came with. I'm guessing yours came with the clean WWE 1.34.405.5, right? Then you download the RUU, start it and find rom.zip in the temp folder of your computer. Copy the rom.zip to another place and close the RUU. Inside rom.zip you'll find all the stock images, including system, boot and recovery.
I think the steps would be (should you have an ENG SPL):
1. gfree s-on
2. reboot to fastboot and flash all the stock partitions, one by one - fastboot flash <partition name (system, boot, recovery, radio, userdata)> <partition name>.img
3. flash the SHIP SPL to go back to full S-OFF - for example, fastboot flash hboot hboot_7230_Vision_HEP_0.85.0005_101011.nb0
4. reboot or power down your phone, then go back to fastboot to check if everything's okay - fastboot reboot bootloader or fastboot oem powerdown (if I remember correctly)
Hope this answers your question

Ok.. You were very clear. Only a question.. what's SHIP SPL, where can I get it and, expecially, why should I come back to full S-OFF
There are two kinds of SPLs:
1. ENG - engineering, which gives you one kind of S-OFF - the kind which lets you flash your phone.
2. SHIP - shipped, the one which the end-user is supposed to have. This is the one you'll find inside RUUs.
To make thing even MORE complicated, there are two kinds of S-OFF:
a) Radio S-OFF - turns the security (S) flag off, removing write protection from the system partitions AND keeping it off even if you reflash everything.
b) ENG SPL S-OFF - also called "label S-OFF" in this forum, removes write protection AND lets you flash from fastboot. However, if you reflash the SPL to stock and don't also have Radio S-OFF, your security flag is set back to ON.
What I mean by "full S-OFF" was having both kinds - Radio and SPL.
In the steps I wrote before I assumed you had an ENG SPL in adition to the radio S-OFF (done by gfree), so that you could flash your system from fastboot. Which means that, to gain S-ON, you need to set radio security back to ON (gfree -s on) and then flash the SHIP SPL from fastboot
Now, if you don't have an ENG SPL but there is a RUU available for the version your phone came with (and you didn't install a ROM with a main version newer than the RUUs), you're in luck! Just use gfree to go back to radio S-ON and then use the RUU to flash your phone back to stock.

Hi.
I have a rooted s-off desire using alpha rev 1.8.
I'm currently trying to resize the nand partitions using the method on the alpharev.nl site, without a pc. I'm running cm6.1 rom, so I downloaded the n1table zip ready to flash. Its renamed to pb99img.zip on root of sdcard. I've reboot into hboot using volume+down and I'm not quite sure where to go from here. I tried going into recovery and installing zip from SD but it doesnt seem to have worked as when I reboot into rom and check SD storage, it remains the same as before.
I know I must be missing something basic. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Cheers.

Do NOT continue with what you're doing. Have you even read the instructions on the AlphaRev site? You flash a new MTD table using the fastboot commands of adb:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)
4) 'Fastboot reboot-bootloader'
5) 'Fastboot erase cache'
6) Boot recovery, wipe everything and restore
It´s also working with HBOOT...but I think you have to rename it to PB99IMG.zip (case Sensitiv)
If you have it in your / Filesystem on your SD Card, you will be asked after booting to Bootloader if you want to update.
Answer with "Volume up" or "down"
YOU DO NOT RENAME AN ALPHAREV HBOOT MOD TO PB99IMG
That is for Zip versions of the RUUs and NOTHING to do with AlphaRev
Seriously, read up before you brick your phone
From the Aplha Rev HP:
You can also download the corresponding PB99IMG zipfile, put it on your sdcard, and rename it to PB99IMG.zip. Then start the phone in HBOOT mode (VolDown+POWER) to flash the HBOOT without a PC.
Sorry, if I don´t understand this right...but that´s a fact from his Page
I´m sure Fastboot is the better way...but I tried it like this and it worked
I stand corrected, didn't see they had that option now. My apologies
In which case, you'd download the relevent ZIP file, rename it PB99IMG.zip (not PB99IMG.zip.zip) and put it on the root of our SD card (root - not in any folders)
Then, when you boot into HBOOT it should just pick it up and ask if you want to flash it - you don't go into recovery
no Probs
I never got asked if i wanted to flash the hBOOT
I'm running a rooted HTC desire and i'm trying to load flash the hboot to the oxygen variety
I haven't s-off my phone yet but wanted to use the no PC method outlined above
When i go into hBoot the phone picks up the PB99IMG.zip (saying "checking PB99IMG.zip......") but doen't give me the option to flash the hboot
Am i missing something? Do i have to s-off it the long way first?
Any help would be really appreciated
=]
Yes, you have to S-OFF first before you can change the MTD. It does say on the website:
"If you are already S-OFF, you can get our newest patched HBOOTs from here. (without going through the entire procedure again).
Please read the entire table and pick the partition table with the correct sizes for your ROM. One easy way to switch partition tables, is to nandroid backup,
and verify that the sizes of your backup are indeed the ones listed in the table (or smaller), and restore after flashing hboot."
Any idea if i can choose the Oxygen variation when i use the AlphaRev 1.8 HBOOT reflash utility or will i need to do it again with a PB99IMG.zip after?

Do the Alpharev 1.8 Flash first.
Then connect your phone, boot into Fastboot mode, and run the foll:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)
4) 'Fastboot reboot-bootloader'
5) 'Fastboot erase cache'

Of course I have read the instructions thoroughly. I would never do anything without reading several times over. As another member pointed out, you can in fact flash from .zip
However it would not work for me, probably a lot of others too, as another member mentioned it has been removed from site.
I have now switched to miui and am not encountering any storage space issues as yet, so I think ill leave it alone for awhile. Thanks for everyone's input and help.
Cheers.

Anyone got this to work? Ive tried following the instructions (I have s-off and have repartitioned my HBOOT previously with ADB) and it just says no image found when I load into fastboot
When I try to do it from the SD card on mine, it finds the PB99IMG.zip file but then says "Model ID invalid. Update Fail!" then asks if I want to reboot or not. Rebooting just performs a normal reboot with no changes.

Obviously, you're trying to install a file meant for another device! That's a very dangerous thing to do!
It's the PB99IMG.zip for the Oxygen HBOOT. How can it be for the wrong device? I'm s-off, running Oxygen RC7.

At least that's what the error code means anyway..Is there a reason why you cant fastboot flash the img?
Yea, I assumed that. I can't seem to get fastboot working again on my machine. It was working but I haven't had much time to look into what happened. ADB devices brings up the serial number but fastboot won't detect the phone. I was just trying to do this while I was at work and I don't have access to fastboot here.

Adb and fastboot detect the phone at different phases. If one detects, at that point, the other wouldnt.
Are u sure you're trying out fastboot in fastboot mode (poweroff, Back key+Power On)? At that point fastboot should work..Even most severely damaged phones are detected in fastboot
Yes, the phone is in fastboot when I'm trying this. I'm wondering if something happened to the fastboot driver or something. Either way, I'll look into it at some point.
Has anyone got a got a guide on how to change to CM7 boot?
Also, do you need to be s-off to do it?
Go to --> Alpharev
Code:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)

And: Yes, you need S-Off
Thanks, is it possible to s-off without using a cd?
You don't need to be s-off to flash CW recovery, only rooted. Although Alpharev will do this. (kills 2 birds with one stone). I rooted, z4root, installed CW along with Rom Manager. Flashed ROM.
The only advantage to s-off, is that you can change the "splash image" (not boot animation) Boot animation can be changed without s-off.
You don't need to run from cd.
But.... You have to have drivers installed.
Sure, you can either create a bootable usb-stick or start the image as a virtual system with virtual box. Please use the forum search, there is a really good tut including a step by step guide for each method.

Not true, there are many many more advantages of having s-off your Desire, and one of them is becoming more useful and needed these days, and that one is precisely what OP of this topic is trying to do: flash CM7 Hboot to have csutom partition sizes, and have more space on /data partition for app or dalvik cache (if using Data++ ROMs). And that can not be done if S-on.
Thats the thread I was talking about.

You need the android sdk to get abd and fastboot running. You can download this here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
then open Programfolder/tools in commandline, boot your phone in fastboot-mode (swich off, then switch on while hitting back-key (back!, not vol-down).
Then in commandline type in "fastboot devices" to check if your phone is connected properly (it should show you, if a phone is connected). If yes, use the steps I posted earlier and are described on alpharev.nl
Personally..
I used the CD, followed the prompt to s-off.
Then once s-off and custom bootloader was install, I then used the PB99IMG.zip from AlphaRev to change my partitions to CM7 hboot
http://alpharev.nl/PB99IMG_bravo_cm7.zip
Easy as.

You don't need to use fastboot to change partition sizes, just use the PB99IMG.zips, even easier.
But having the adb/fastboot stuff sorted, is always a plus.

Hi, I've got fastboot setup etc. But can't seem to find a guide on how to change all the partition.
So all you're saying is that if I put the PB99IMG.zips into my sd card and boot into Bootloader, it'll install automatically AS WELL as do the partitions for me? And one more thing if I may (just for clarity) do I put the PB99IMG.zips onto the root of my sdcard or into one of the subfolders and if so which one?
Thanks and sorry for the bombardment of questions!
You will have costom MTD partitions CM7 for exempl: h-boot 130M sistem, 5M Chace, 302M data.
If you mean the EXT partitions? You must still make a ext partition wit cwm or gparted orrommanager.
Put the PB img on your SDcard, the map doesnt matters, because the phone will recognize it enywhere.

Hi,
about CM7 and the rom you want to try, you can have a look to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13084241&postcount=17
I try to resume my experience...
Hope it will help you.
Sup guys! im kinda new to this forum and im kinda stuck with S-Off Precedure With Alpharev.
I am not sure which hboot to download so i went to "bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img"
I had burn the img to be bootable disc and when it boots, it read the disc and it prompt me to boot back in windows xp.
Did i download the wrong hboot or i am not burning a bootable disc?
THANKS IN ADVANCE
You need to download and burn the Alpharev utility to disc, boot that and it will run you through the s-off procedure. You then flash the .img file you currently have through fastboot.

That is a hboot paritioning image.
You should download this http://alpharev.nl/alpharev.iso and burn it on a cd.
To flash the image file you mentioned use this procedure:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)
4) 'fastboot reboot-bootloader'
5) 'fastboot erase cache'
6) Boot recovery, wipe everything and restore.
Read more carefully the page.
Thank you so much!
Also, try to push HBoot img with Android Flasher. Pretty simple to use.
My phone is bricked I think
Erm guys, I have a huge problem. I think I just brick my phone.
While I was upgrading my htc desire radio, I think I rebooted the phone. Now I can't on or even charge the phone.
Is my phone screwed?
Something going wrong while flashing a radio can brick your phone. I assume the computer doesn't recognize it and you can't boot into fastboot? Hope that's not the case.
nope i cant boot it up in any way. Even when i plug into a power supply, the orange light does not light up
It would seem to me that your phone is bricked. Might have to send it in for warranty unless someone else has any ideas.
OH GOD! I am so ******* screwed huh?
Unless someone says otherwise, yes. Sorry.
No fastboot either ? Back button + power
TL;DR
Phone was S-offed and rooted with Oxygen HBOOT.
Someone tried to run 2.3 RUU on it, Now its fudged.
I NEED this back up and working ASAP!
What's the problem.

The boot loader was the official 2.3 and that was then S-OFFed with Revolutionary, that then had the Oxygen R2 HBOOT Partion table on it.
Now I ran the 2.3 update on the wrong phone.
The HBOOT Currently says Alpharev Oxygen r2
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNW0101
RADIO-4.06.00.00.02_2
Aug 10 2010 17:52:18
Then is just says RRU instead of the usual options
When I first turn it on, it shows a black screen with white HTC and 4 ! in triangles in the corner.
I've been told this is bad...
If I try to run the updater, it eventuaklly goes to recover mode and says its fixed but its not.
I get this on the desire screen
[1] RADIO_V2 OK
[2] SPLASH1 - OK
[3] RECOVERY - OK
[4] SPLASH2 - OK
[5] RADIO-CUST - OK
[6] BOOTLOADER - Bypassed
[7] USERDATA - OK
[8] SYSTEM - Fail-PU
[9] BOOT - ok
Partition update fail!
Update fail!
Maybe a full wipe helps. And it could be that you derooted your handy. In this case you had to run unrevoked again.
Good luck
If it help I made a NAND backup lastnight...

Try running the RUU again. Btw, you need to have HTC Sync installed.
I have tried running it again. Just hits the same "error"

U have the oxygen hboot, its too small for the stock gingerbread rom
Flash the downgrader hboot from alpharev.nl (otherwise the ruu CANT overwrite the alpharev oxygen hboot), then run the ruu
How do I go about flashing it? Everything seem pretty broke..
Any surely the RRU should be repartitioning the HBOOT to the correct size?

Nothing is broken..U have to read again alpharev.nl
Download from alpharev the file PB99IMG_downgrade.zip and following instruction:
http://alpharev.nl/
You can also download the corresponding PB99IMG zipfile, put it on your sdcard, and rename it to PB99IMG.zip. Then start the phone in HBOOT mode (VolDown+POWER) to flash the HBOOT without a PC.

It will ask u to apply the update, then accept it (volume keys to navigate, power button to confirm)
After that ur hboot can be overwritten by the ruu..and the ruu will work fine
The thing is I have already added the file to my SD Card. Now when I boot my phone, the VERY first thing it does is a black screen with HTC in white. and in the corners are 4 ! in triangles, The only way to see the HBOOT Screen from there is to connect a USB cable and unplug, on that screen I have no options to do anything!
I dont even have anything I can record a video on to show you, Arrrgh this is annoying. HTC would like money out of me for a "non-warranty issue"

Did u boot the phone in hboot? remove battery, plug again, press and hold volume down then press and hold also the power button..it should boot soon in the hboot and ask u for an update
Yes im positive, I have done it many many times before.
And what im getting here is not what you would normally get
HTCs customer support is terrible! Seriously do not want to be charged to get it fixed never mind a bloody shipping and handling fee!!
oh..i see..how about flash the hboot img (instead of the zip) with fastboot command?
Sure point me to what I need and where I can find it and I shall give that a try

Download this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=630611&d=1308537074
It contain a mininal set of files in order to use fastboot, without installing the android sdk
Then download this http://alpharev.nl/bravo_downgrade.img and put in the same extracted directory above..
Boot ur phone in hboot mode and plug the usb (u said with the usb plugged u see the hboot usb)..then from a command prompt from ur pc, go in the directory above and type: fastboot flash hboot bravo_downgrade.img
If that is successfull..u can run an ruu, and it should restore everything, even the hboot now!
Am I missing a trick I run it and it shows on screen for a split second.
And if it doesn't fix it?!
Nevermind think I remebered how to do it...

At least try, its simple and fast..if that flash fails, will not change ur situation..and u should send it to repair
It says sending "hboot" then writing "hboot" both are okay saying finished with a time, and still wont bloody work!
removed
the downgrader didn't seem to work, but one of the other ones seemed to I think.
I am VERY releiaved, I cannot thank you enough!
I owe you £20. or a beer.
