Anything you can do when SD card dies? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Woke up and my phone said, it is now safe to remove your SD card at the top. Tried remounting it, keeps saying the same message. Tried booting into recovery, mounting the sd card while plugged into my laptop and the laptop said it couldn't initialize it. Am i just screwed entirely? Laaame!

time for an upgrade!

yea, i already ordered a 32g class 10 card Still sucks it died though ha

I mount mine and give it a good error check after I back it up on my hard drive every week or so just in case it fails, id hate to relocate some of my files I've collected, I dropbox the important ones ie wimax.img

I just had my damn sd card die on me too! I took it out of the phone and put it in a SD card adapter, plugged it into my computer (actually had to plug it in and out a few times) and my files came up. It was a pain in the ass to get my files off with transfer speeds of like 125 bytes per second (yes it took hours).
Lesson learned, back up that shizz I am sure the above is not guaranteed to work, but luckily with solid state memory you have a better chance of being able to recover the files than a mechanical drive failure (yuck)
Best of luck!

There used to be a problem with SD Card functionality. Search on the forums for SD Card FIX.
Also when you mount, make sure you eject the phone before yanking it out. Something like this happened to me once after I just yanked it out instead of safely ejecting the phone.

I was having similar problems. I turned out I had a bad USB port on the EVO. Due to the bad port I hadn't rooted it yet, and exchanged at a corporate store for a replacement. All is well now!
did you get a refurb? or new
After I realized how much I would be plugging and unplugging the phone I stopped right away since that's how my other phone broke. I just use SwiFTP and ftp into my phone or sdcard.
lol rut.. thats a great idea, and btw the awesome devs have found a fix to my problem.. i'll find link and post

[Q] Glide Hard Brick/Soft Brick - Possible cause: MicroSD card

Hi,
I just got a used Samsung Glide (I927R - Rogers Canada), rooted and running this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462298 and it seemed to be working fine until I inserted my microSD card. I wanted to get my apps and stuff from my old captivate S1 but as soon as I stuck it in there, the screen started to get a bunch of grey horizontal lines! Couldn't turn it off so I took the battery out and when I put it back, NOTHING. Dead. Or so I thought. The USB did make a sound when I plugged it in, but only once or twice. Not consistently.
I tried all the usual things to get it into download mode: volume up and power button with battery/no battery, plugged into the wall, plugged into the computer. Also tried to see if Odin would recognize it, and it using those methods, and it didn't. Oddly though, later on I walked by and saw that the rogers screen had come on. Same grey lines, a few at first and then more and more. Then, it went dead again. I'm currently staring at the brick now, unable to figure out whether it's hard bricked or soft bricked. Has this happened to anyone else, and is there a fix perhaps? I'd be so grateful.
If you're running a custom ROM you [most likely] have CWM on there. Try volume down + power and see if you get into that. If you get there, you can install a new ROM. I'd try a format/fresh install first. I'd also make a backup of the SD on a computer, format the SD, then put your stuff back on it and put it back into the phone. Only copy what you want, let any extra/garbage stuff go away (as long as you have a full backup).
I've only had my phone freak out once on me thats similar to the grey lines you mentioned. But mine were yellow. No idea what caused it, it was seemingly random.
Try the volume + down thing and let us know if you at least get to the CWM screen.
Was the phone turned on when you inserted the MicroSD? You may have inadvertently shorted pins to the spring mechanism.
X2 on bobbin's solution, you may be flying blind here, unfortunately. Last resort would be no MicroSD, no SIM, plug USB to computer, insert battery, hold both volume buttons and power button, see if ODIN recognizes. **** goes wonky when you try to hot-swap components and short them.
Good Luck! If you can't get it to work, let me know, I'd be willing to try my best with it and maybe give you a diagnosis.

Are you not allowed or should not switch the SDCARD out while the phone is running? What about the SIM? Just curious for future knowledge.

Thank you. Yes, I believe the phone was running when I put the MicroSD in. I've done that a few times in the past with my other captivate and never had a problem. If I've fried things, can they be fixed? Unfortunately, I bought this phone used with the assumption that I could transfer the warranty. I have since discovered that is false and I am now the owner of a very expensive paperweight (if I can't fix it or find someone to help me).
Thanks again. I would LOVE a diagnosis. Would you PM me with details? I'm in Toronto.
I eject and load my sd card all the time with the phone on...

PM on its way. No guarantee I can do anything but diagnose If it's the main circuit board, it quickly gets more expensive to fix than replace.

It's not a problem with hot-swapping, it's if something gets caught up, low voltage short/ground-outs can wreak havoc on sensitive electronics. It's like wiring electrical outlets with the power on - It's not against the rules, it can be done safely, but one wire out of position grounding load will flip a circuit breaker/pop a fuse.

Problem with Micro USB Cable

Hi,
I am on my computer alot, and to top that over i am also a mobile freak. I must have it with me, and because my battery life isn't that good, i always keep a USB cable connected between my phone and computer. I find it practical if i want to remove some files that take alot of space but nor permanently remove and sync stuff etc. But recently when the cable is plugged in with my computer, i randomly hear the sound (which you hear wen your computer gets connected with the device or disconnected) and it shows that my computer doesn't recognize my phone. After i move the cable a li'l bit it recognizes my phone again, then also stops recognizing. This happens very often and because i do copy files to computer for safe keeping very often it's gotten really annoying. It's like a never ending torturous cycle.
The weird thing is that it at beginning was working flawlessly and now i hear the "ta-ta" sound so often, it's getting on my nerve. This happened on my first USB cable so i got a new which worked good, but it too has started to do this. (recognize --> unrecognize ---> recognize and vice versa)
What am i doing wrong, i don't recall that i have bent them too much or put too much pressure to any crucial parts at any time. This just seems to happen after a certain time.
I am now on my third which i luckily found lying around in the house. And big surprise, now this one also starts to act weird.
Please help, i can't keep bying new USB cables. And certainly can't stop syncing data between the comp and my SGS2 (complicated story, also irrelevant)
Thank you for your time and extra thanks to replies
I apologize if it all seems to have just been written in haste and isn't quite understandable, but as said, i really need to sync some crucial stuff between my phone and computer and that's why im panicked abit
And let's not forget about the flashing of ROMs and Kernels etc. which i wont be able to do if my cables are behaving this way.

Putting phone in the freezer fixes a problem, why?

Hello,
so a common problem for the lg, that happend to me, is that the sd card will not be recognized anymore for a long time, and the sim card will only work if the phone is restarted several times, until by luck, it has detected it, otherwise it isn't detecting it, even though the card is firmly inserted in the phone and the hardware is ok. So as I was trying to make the phone recognize the sim card on normal room temperature it wouldn't happen, but when I put in the freezer and it cools down for several minutes and I restart it the card would be recognized. Is this because in low temperatures the metal shrinks?
P.s. I leave it then in the fridge, in order not to get it condensated.
Thanks for any replies!

Sim and external sd cards can short out and overheat, and since the cards are stacked on top of one another in the G3 - if one gets too hot it could damage the other one. Power it up without the sim & sd card and see if it still overheats.
Another suggestion is to take a close look and see if anything is shorting across any pins near your sim/sd card ports. If there is nothing obvious around your connectors and your cards work in another phone, then I'd have to agree you may need a replacement phone.
And you can always try a factory reset or a fresh install of whatever ROM you are using and cross your fingers it works. Good luck :fingers-crossed:
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I have already gave the phone for a repair of this problem. It then occured again. I think it is something more complicated and my sd card is not on the phone for a lot of time now, so I will only hope, that the next repair will fix the things for longer time than 2 weeks.

Completely Dead P8000 - any help much appreciated

Hi all,
Sorry for such a depressing first thread! Had my P8000 for about a year with no real major issues. I did root it, so SPFlashTool all worked fine and I know how to use and I took it to bits about 3 months ago to fix the headphone jack. The other day, I took the MicroSD out, copied some files across to it and put it back in. When I checked the phone 5 mins later is was dead dead. No LED, no response to vol up/down and power, no charging no nothing. So I can't get to the recovery bootloader screen.
Tried connecting to charger for ages, nothing happened.
Tried SPFlashTool but no USB noise from Windows and no response from phone. Tried another Windows PC with new drivers, same.
Tried disconnecting battery. Still completely dead and no response what-so-ever.
Anyone have any ideas (no matter how simple it sounds) of what to do next?
Thanks in advance,
Del Boy
:crying:
And did you try to turn it on without the sd card? In the past I had problems turning on a phone and in the end it was due to a defective sd card. As soon as I removed the card, the phone started working again. I then had to reformat the card and everything worked again. Did you reformat the card? If so check it you formatted it using exfat, since it's not supported. You should use FAT32.
Thank you for the reply!
Yes, taken SD card out, no response, put it back, no response, tried a blank one, no response.
Was yours completely dead too?
Hello there! unfortunately my P8000 is completely dead too. I just tried all things in my hands but, I have not solved anything, besides I've searched all over the internet and I didn't find anything, did you solved the problem with your P8000?
I don't know what else to do, please if you find any answer about how to fix your P8000 let me know, and if I find something, I'll do the same for you.
I know this thread is old as dirt, but I found that also when I removed the sdcard, backed it up, and put it back in the sdcard slot that my p8000 wouldn't turn on. Turned out that the sdcard clips are crap, and a piece of the clip (very tiny) broke of wedging between the mainboard, and the clip shorting the phone. Removed the tiny metal piece, and the P8000 powered up. Bad thing, is now I had to tape the clip/sdcard in place to keep them from falling out. My P8000 is about 7 months old as of this post.
