hello all, i just bought an HTC desire, and i'm a complete newb when it comes to understanding the technical details of how to get the best out of my O.S
i managed to root the phone using unrevoked, because all i really wanted for now was to save apps on SD card instead of phone memory(very very small phone memory)
and i noticed that most people use an app. called APP2SD or something like that, but most of the instructions had something related to ROMS and stuff like that, and i dont really understand how all the ROMS thing work, so my question is, is there a way 2 install APP2SD directly on my unrooted with original O.S desire (2.1), and without using an SD as a goldcard or something like that( i saw a tutorial where having a goldcard was a must)

no, you will have to be rooted for proper A2SD to work, unless you upgrade to froyo, you won't have A2sd, but the froyo a2sd has too many ristrictions on which apps can be moved, it is better off to root your phone and installl a custom rom with proper A2SD....
i meant rooted mobile, my phone is rooted ,what ROMS do you recommend that have a good A2SD and would be effective?
If you're looking for a stock Sense-based ROM then look at LeeDroid. Not used it myself but a lot of people say it's good

It has APP2SD+ integrated already.
To 'activate' it you have to modify your SD card prior. So on your currently rooted phone you have to install ROM manager from the market. If you open this app, you have an option to partition the SD card. Select it and create a 512MB EXT partition and no swap file/partition. It will reboot your phone, enter the recovery mode, format the whole SD card (so everything will be lost on it), create an EXT3 partition and then it will reboot again to Android. Nothing visible changed yet, except that you lost 500MB free space on your SD card.
After you've done that you can flash LeeDroid. It will automatically detect the EXT3 partition on your SD card and activate APP2SD+. Every app, which gets installed on the internal memory now, gets in real installed on the EXT3 partition on your SD card.
For all this you need root, which you already have.
A Goldcard is only necessary to get root on a branded Desire.

Can I root my o2 froyo branded HTC desire and use the apps2sd+ alone to installs apps on my SD card without using a custom Rom.

This is a general problem atm and it's not based on rooting. Google should fix the market next days (hoping that).

I had that problem yesterday, but it is fixed now, only 1/2 apps still not working.

I follow your recommendation. Run ROM manager, then go to Partition SD, 512 Kb, 0 swap, then say Ok to reboot anŠ² format but then ... nothing is happend - phone is rebooting and look with exclamation sign and green android forever... How long should I wait for the card (8Gb) to be formated?

OK after reading a lot of stuff on the web (mainly modaco and xda), I finally understood a bit more this Apps2Sd thingy.
Like most people I have an "internal storage" problem on my desire
Now I managed to have fully rooted HTC Desire, with security off even though the bootloader is 0.9x using unrevoked. Great piece of software
Great so far, but I still have a space problem.
After further reading, I finally understood that thestandard Froyo Apps2Sd sucks and still eats up loads of internal memory because apps aren't designed to take advantage of it and a few other reasons but I digress.
So the only solution is to install the unofficial apps2sd or apps2sd+ (the ony diference being that app2sd+ also moves the dalvik cache, right ?)
However, so far, I've only read explanations about using a2sd/a2sd+ with a CUSTOM rom.
Now I know that modaco and xda custom roms are just great (used to test a few with my old acer liquid) but well I'm very satisfied of HTC stock rom indeed. Seriously, I can't see anything to change.
So, I'd like to use a2sd/a2sd+ but avoid going through wiping the phone, falshing a new rom and all...Furthermore, I took some time to link the contacts between gmail and facebook and I wouldn't like to do it again.
Is this possible to use a2sd/a2sd+ using the standard HTC rom, without having to flash a new custom rom ? And if yes, could some kindly explain me how ?

Theres the script for apps2sd, not sure if you can just flash the .zip though.
IMO, you might not think there's anything to change until you experience the changes, just get a custom rom and reap the benefits.

Allright, I finally decided to use LeeDroid's rom and, so far so good ! PLenty of free phone memory, with a ton of apps !! Thanks a lot for your usefull comments.
I was in the same predicaent yesterday, but gave up as I had to go out!
I had LeeDroid with A2SD on the phone, but it still ran out of space when I installed Need For Speed... but this was probably because I didn't have my SD Card partitioned.
Am I right when I think that I have to backup my SD Card, then go into ROM Manager and simply format the card in there for A2SD?
I tried this, but I still only see my SD card as 1 partition when I look in Windows 7. Is this right - or should I see 2 partitions?
Sorry for the newb questions - but I want to get it all sorted before I start setting the phone up the way I want!!
Windows cannot see ext type partitions, so this is ok. Yeah, backup, use ROM manager to make the partition, then recopy the backup.
Get Quick System Info from the Market, you'll see there if the ext partition is used afterwards.

I checked my partition with Quick System Info - and something must've gone wrong as my A2SD partition is only 16mb with only 2mb free!!
What settings am I supposed to use when I use ROM Manager to make the partition? I'm pretty sure I set the first one to 512mb and the second to 0mb like I read somewhere. Is this wrong?
Yeah, thats ok 512mb for apps and 0 for swap. Try it couple times, maybe the ROM manager didn't do it properly for the 1st time. Check with Quick System Info when its done.
Actually, you can use anything you want to format your microSDHC card. I used a computer with linux, a card reader and gparted, and I found it way more straightforward than using the phone to do the job. Gparted is included in Ubuntu and yu even have gparted live disk/usb (go to gparted.sourceforge.net. Sorry can't post links on the forum yet )

Hi,
i was lookin for a solution too and i found it.
I am running on stock rom froyo 2.2 on my htc desire.
16gb micro sd card. - no data loss.
Here is the steps.
HTC desire has to be rooted. and S-OFF (not sure if it works without S-OFF)
Busybox installed.
Next , download Gparted to partition your SD Card. (can run in VM )
Run Gparted, mount your card, USe Gparted to shrink your sd card. (i have my pics and videos inside the card up to 12gb.. and i shrink to 13gb.. It takes a looooong time.. about 13 mins to shink.. thank god my data is still intact..
i partition the extra 1gb.. set it as primary too and then format it as ext2... i have tried ext3 and ext4.. it cant be recognized by Desire.
put back yr SD card.. (if you use a card reader.. or can jus partition using Desire mounted as disk drive)
Next.. download. Link2SD , search in market..
Run the app and it will be able to detect and ask you to select the drive.. ext2 and press ok.
now.. use the app to link up yr app.. those with FRoyo app2sd.. u can click 'move to phone' and then use link2sd to link it..
you will start to see that your internal memory will increase as u move and link more apps using link2SD...
Now go to the link2sd option and set it to 'auto link' new installed app.
once u installed any new app.. it will be linked...
if the app is auto installed to SD card via the Froyo app2sd.. simply go to manage application and move it to phone and the use link2sd to link it..
(no.. you will not see the 1g size when u go under settings, you can check storage under the link2sd app)
Note: once u mount yr Desire as disk drive .. you will need to reboot your phone else if you install any new app.. it will be install to your real internal memory even thou it says linked... if this happens.. you might see low memory notification.. jus reboot your phone.. and when rebooted, it will be re-link automatically..
Cheers! i used to have 15mb left.. now i have 50++ mb.. and yet installed alot of apps.. without flashing a rom.. this will helps if you guys jus need more internal storage and do not wat to risk or go thru the restoration of data..
as usual... before you do anything... do a nandroid backup using clockworkmod recovery or any recovery and also titantium backup to backup the apps data in case anything goes wrong

hello all had my desire for a good few months now, totally clean unbranded device. Now after quietly perusing these forums for a while i feel the next best thing i could do is flash it with a custom rom, i am drawn towards leedroid 2.3c, however i would like some advice first from the experts....All You.
is leeddroid a good stable rom with all the feature that i currently have on a stock desire?
what is the simplest way to flash?
do i have to do anything prior to a flash? ie backup anything, or make a backup of my stock system? if so how? i have xp in iphones and nothing needed to be done there just plug in and flash?

Before you do anything, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the 'Software version' number and post it up on here. We'll go from there...

First thing, download the RUU for that ROM so you can go back to stock should you need to. Get it from:

After that you can look at rooting the phone. I just re-rooted my phone on 2.29.405.5 using unrEVOked 3.31 and it work fine. You can get it here:

Once rooted, go look at the different ROMs available and take you're pick!!
There you go about rooting the phone from EddyOS.
Leedroid is a newbie friendly rom, it is stable, fast (faster than the original), has relatively better battery life than the original and everything is working, not to mention, it is also a Sense rom, just like your original rom.
So, yes! Leedroid is a good pick to start.
Note:
---- IMPORTANT----
1. The first thing you might want to do directly right after rooting is to create a nanddroid bckup and copy the bckup into your pc directly after creating it.. Do it before flashing, formatting, creating partition, or anything else.

2. You might also need a card reader and a software such as partition wizard, gparted, or similar to create an EXT partition in your SD Card since most of the custom roms will need it. Create the EXT partition before flashing.

now i take it i do not need to make a gold card as my phone is unbranded, so my steps to take are :-
a. root...using unrevoked
b. nandroid backup...using clockworkmod recovery supplied with unrevoked
c. flash whatever rom i choose.
now once i have done step b. do i store this backup on my pc? if so whats it gonna be called and where will it be on the desire
in order to flash a rom, where do i put the rom i download to flash to the htc? on the memoery card?
once i have done c i am no longer able to get stock updates.
once i have done c do i need to set up anything so my phone can make calls or access the internet etc, or does it behave like a new phone out the box and you whack in the info it asks for ie google account stuff.

The Nandroid is stored on your SD card. You can make a backup of this on your PC should you wish.
Once rooted you can no longer get OTA updates so you'd need to update your ROM as (and if) the dev does so
You download the ROM file and stick it anywhere on the SD card as you can browse for the ZIP in recovery.
The phone should go through a setup and automatically set the APN but if not you can manually add it using the operator details on their website

As it has been said before Leedroid is a very good start. The latest version should be the Leedroid 2.3c.
Try that one out and play a little while before trying to flash other ROMs.
EXT partition is needed for A2SD/A2SD+ ROMs (do not play around with D2EXT/D2SD at the moment, you are not ready yet for this).
A2SD means Apps to SD, means more apps can be installed since they don't go to your very limited internal memory.
Make 2 partitions on your SD card but be sure to copy everything inside the SD card to your PC just to be sure before making arrangement for those partitions.
First create a FAT32 partition for your datas ( such as music, videos, etc.) as the first partition, set it as primary and then create a 512-2GB EXT2/3/4 (I recommend1GB EXT 2 or 3 at the moment) as the second partition, set it as primary.
Be sure to have the EXT partition after the FAT32.
Windows can only see the first partition, that is where you are going to put bck all the files you have copied from the SD card before making all of those partitions.
Interesting thread as I am considering doing the same. Main reason for me is the clash between HTC Sense and the bluetooth stack not allowing for a bluetooth keyboard. Any particular rom recommendations for this - Leedroid, Cyanogen?

FroYo = Android 2.2 (what you're currently on)
Gingerbread = Android 2.3
AOSP = Android Open Source Project )ROM built from the source code and now ported from another device)
As for EXT, I have a 1GB (1024MB) one and it serves me well
i am using leedroid for sometime now 512 MB EXT3-4 partition is more than enough i have 110 apps installed and still have 351MB free

what is the simplest prog to use to create the partitions? scrap that just used minitool partition magic i have an old 1gig card am gonna try will that be ok?
i have a fat32 partition size 533mb set as primary and a 362mb ext3 partition does it matter if the fat32 primary partition has a name?
looking at leedroid i think i need to install 2.3b before i can install the latest 2.3c
You can either do it in the recovery (I use Amon RA as mine but I think CWM does it too now). Otherwise you're better off downloading a GParted Live CD, boot your PC from that and then partition the card
When you're rooting Desire, have a look at good ol' turkeh's guide. Not only you have an excellent root tutorial, but you also learn how to properly flash ROMs, how to create and restore a system backup, how to backup apps, how to create ext partitions to enable app2sd and how to unroot the phone in case you need your warranty back.
Note: when performing the s-ff process (for data2sd), read carefully what it says and be aware that it can brick your phone if not done properly.
Turkey's guide is OK but is out of date somewhat, could do with updating to include the newer versions on unrEVOked

She asked me if I could install a stable ROM and if there's any chance that I could increase the space to install apps to the SD Card.
I've already did this, but the ROMs were bad, and the partition wasn't recognized (I had to install App2SD and then I had to move every app to the SD Card, manually).
What ROM do you recommend? It has to be stable and fast. And how can I make the partition work? Like if it was internal storage.

About phone space mods I cant give you an answer. I never use something like that.

If ur using cm roms I recommend S2E, U can download this in play store then tick every option and reboot
for non-cm roms use Link2sd.
when launching the app first time u will need to choose which ext the partition is. Choose ext2 and reboot then link all apps

Firstly I have read through every thread I can find with same problem but cannot solve this.
I have been partitioning a 16gb microsd card to be able to use Link2sd to move apps for more memory
The first partition is around 15gb Fat32 Primary
but it is the second partition I am having problems with ?
1gb Primary ext 2/3/4 and Fat32 I have tried them all and I still get the mount script error. In link2sd the scond partition is not mounted and does not show up at all in settings/storage or about phone/partition info

"For some custom roms and some phones like samsung galaxy ace plus gt-s7500. Partitioning the memory card using either the method above or using system recovery will not work as Link2sd is unable to create the mount script for the 2nd partition created.
An app from google play called Mount2SD is the solution as it has most of the mount scripts needed. However on installing it, it will uninstall link2sd.
once installed Mount2sd, install startup binaries and set the driver to EXT4.
Reboot phone.
Install Link2SD, create mount script using EXT4 and it will say ' success mount script created'
Leave Mount2SD installed as you have further functionality with it and it is required to manage the 2nd partition.
