Sorry in advance for the noob question but I am new to this forum, and to Android in general. I recently Upgraded to DK28 using Odin on my Epic. I was wondering if there were any specific community roms which are better than dk28, and if so, which ones are they and what features do they have which the dk28 doesn't offer, and how stable are they? Which ones do you recommend?
Thanks.
Most ROMs now re based on DK28. Read some of the ROM threads for info... I recommend researching CWM3 and ext4,this may be needed on some ROMs...

Get nebula 1.0.7 its as stable as it gets. And its based off the dk28 modem. Stock dk28 isn't that geat so throw a custom rom over it and have fun!

Is there any ROM which includes an alternate place to get APPS, similar to the Iphone's Cydia? For a non-programmer whos lookin for a overall 'cool yet stable' rom, which one do you recommend? Does the installation of the ROM delete any information from the phone (contacts, apps, etc)? And can the ROM be uninstalled?
Going with the stock dk28 is a good first choice. As far as I know there aren't any repositories like cydia for Android. That is due to the fact that you can already install unsigned apps in your stock android os.
Number one thing to do right now is READ. The threads are very long, so maybe read the first few pages, and last few pages of the long ones. Usually the first few posts are new updates to the thread, and the last posts discuss the most recent happenings and general discussion of the current version of those roms. Reading the stuff inbetween can be helpful to know how far each rom has come since inception, but its usually irrelevant and you can skip over it.
I've used cyanogen for another handset and I thought it was very well polished. I really like the ACS Syndicate rom. Although its 2.1, I liked it more than stock dk28 2.2. Im currently on bonsai4all, which requires you to format your phone into ext4. Its another step beyond just rooting and booting an OS, but its really fast and stable. I've also used Viper rom. There is a good version which is dual boot (ext4, and RFS), and I was using that before going with bonsai. I would give a strong recommendation between those two.
I can't really see anything getting that much better than bonsai. I wont say its the best, but i'm very impressed. I can say I look forward to seeing Syndicate rom once it gets to 2.2 (they are waiting for official 2.2 source) and also cyanogen 6.2 or better yet 7 (non betas).
Lastly, if you see the words Beta, please dont ask "how stable is it?" Its a beta version and not designed for a daily use. Some betas are very polished and nearly complete, but remember it's still just a beta. hope this helps
In my opinion bonsai rom is the most stable and a new release is getting ready to be released. I'm on eof the beta testers for the new release and its getting.ready.to be released.

I am guessing some of the devs here got hold of the rom a little before the rest of us.
I am currently running Simply AOSP EC05 which has been pretty stable for me.
Want to upgrade to GB for an extremely stable bloatware free ROM. Is there anything now or should I wait a bit to give devs time to play with the new official release?
Thanks!

Haven't seen anything custom yet. But I have seen a pre rooted deodexed version i believe. Looks like a few devs have indicated they will have working custom versions up by tomorrow.
LOL wow. The OTA just started and already asking for custom.
If this community is to learn just 1 thing out of all our update situations... please be it patience.
Waiting patiently, excited to see what will come of this update
There are custom roms in the works, but you could always play with the modded stock roms that are popping up..

that's why I ended the subject with the question "is it too early"... so I'm guessing your answer to that is yes. I just figured some devs got hold beforehhand.
I saw the ERA thread for the Hurricane stockyish rom...looks promising...
Anxious for aclean simple rom...but patient =)
Hurricane is based on the pre release. It's been out for a while. It's good, but id wait till later. You want the best right?

Should be in testing in the next day or so..
Has anybody heard if acs is working on srf 1.3 or whatever it will be called?
My phone has been pretty stable running Simply AOSP. I installed the flashable EC05 to EI22 modem yesterday. Only issue is have been getting some random shutdowns. Not sure if it started before modem update - but looking to flash soon nevertheless.
So I noticed in the dev forum there are two interesting looking EI22 based ROMS... ACS ICS and also ERA's Legendary.
I realize each rom has its respective dedicated thread but is there a major difference between them that could help me decide between the two...
Best way to find out about custom ROMs is look in Development. The newest ones will always be at the top and simply read the OP of each.
Just finished unlocking, rooting and getting my GeNex all dialed.
After all that work (I had some trouble but managed to figure it out after several frustrating hours) I am definitely ready to reward myself with a new ROM.
From what I can tell there doesn't appear to be that many.
Any recommendations on a good one to start with?
My first instinct is to go with Android Revolution HD based on the amount of pages on that thread.
I would recommend either as you say ARHD or Modaco's custom ROM's there both good ROM's and well supported. I'd also suggest if you want OC/UV then use a custom Kernel with either ROM..
Personally Im using Modaco's ROM with Francos Kernel. Both can be found in the Dev section..
Happy flashing.
P.s make a Nandroid of your stock ROM incase you ever want to return to stock.
Thanks, mklass!
First thing I did when I got CWM on there was nandroid. Thanks for the info. I haven't seen the Modaco yet so I'll check that out for sure.
Any news or rumors on MIUI 4??
Hi Folks,
sneaking around all the Forums and Threads about HTC-Desire I came to the conclusion that I urgently need a new ROM on my smartphone. OK, to be honest, it is more-or-less because off this permanent message that my memory is running low.
So I started to gain knowledge about 'root', 'S-Off', 'HBoot', 'Recovery' and all that stuff. It took a while by I managed to 'root' my Desire without any issue.
Bye the way I learned a complete new language and had to jump between several threads to understand all these abbreviations.
Now I struggle with myself as I am not able to decide on which ROM to choose. My favorites are MIUI and Oxygen. But, what confuses me most are the different versions of each ROM. Yes, I read all the threads of most every single ROM but that made the decision not easier.
Is there someone around who can provide some experience with MIUI and/or Oxygen ROMs.
What I really looking for is a nice looking, state-of-the-art, stable and fast ROM as I am not of that kind to flash updates every day.
Did I ever mentioned that my grandchild is laughing at me, so please help me proof that even someone not familiar with all that new stuff will be able to flash a new ROM.
Cheers !!
My suggestion for MIUI is this one:
http://miuiandroid.com/community/threads/archived-miui-versions-desire-gb.16551/
It's stock version from MIUI England, without many modifications. You can also check out on MIUI Germany site.
In my signature you have something I made that's based on CM7 with just a few mods.
I'm using the MIUI ROM too, the response I get is way faster than the stock HTC rom. Although it's a shame that development stopped at GB (I really want the scrollable widget in ICS), but some of the guys here are working on ICS/JB ports, might jump onto one of those when they mature.
Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums but I've been looking into custom ROMs for some time already.
I'd like to tell you that I'm extremely dumb when it comes to things like Kernel, even though I understand a bit of these, I have lots of questions, keeping with that example, if I flash a CM9 Kernel, when I restore an old backup (where I used the Stock phone, for instance), what happens to that Kernel? Is it erased and the Kernel is back to my Stock?
But well, let's get the thread specifically where I want, the custom ROMs.
As previously said, I'm stupidly new to these things, but I decided to gamble on my luck and flash a CM9 Quarx nightly some days ago (can't remember from where I got that one, sorry), but I experienced some problems, like a small lag (yeah, I didn't really like the speed, compared to my stock) and an awful battery problem, where two battery fixes didn't work, and, then, with my heart desolated like a dragon's breath on corn fields, I restored the stock backup I made before doing that.
Ah yeah, I forgot to mention that my Defy+ came with a 2.3.4 version of the OS, just to let you guys know.
So, after that, seeking for more candy to my eyes (Jesus, I loved the settings and stuff from that ROM!), I sailed my boat to the famous WhiteRabbit 1.6, which I must admit, I LOVED it. But as I said, LOV"ED", until I started to face a giant tide... My phone was constantly freezing for long periods (something between 4 and 6 minutes, usually), something of which made my phone quite unusuable and unstable. With tears in my eyes, listening to Beethoven's 1st move of Moonlight Sonata (on the PC...), I decided to restore that old - 2-day old actually - backup to Stock again.
Now I just noticed that I don't like Stock anymore, I can't stand the limitations in comparison to the other two ROMs I used, and I want more! I want some stable ROM, and with "stable" I really mean something stable: a ROM that won't freeze, that has the basic stuff working, a good-looking UI, with fast and smooth scrolling, with a fix for the battery error (if there is the error on the ROM... which I'm quite sure will have), and that gives me more than the Stock would.
I've been looking at that MIUI Pikachu Edition and I really want to try it out, so, should I go on with it? Or do you guys recommend me something else? Another thing that I forgot to say is that I don't really feel like downgrading my Kernel nor putting my phone into a knight's blade way.
Yup, my device is Rooted and has a Boot Manager that I got on some brazillian forums, everything works as I guess they should do.
Sorry for the wall of text and before anything, thanks in advance!
Hey, mate
MIUI Pikachu Edition was the ROM I used absolutely the longest, almost two months without switching to anything else. I must admit that was the time I was constantly satisfied with my phone, but then CM9 became stable and I switched to it and then I simply couldn't go back to any Gingerbread ROM as the new features (mostly the looks ) of ICS were just too good Soon CM10 showed up and I've been with it since the first nightly.
So, yes, I think you should try Pikachu, but for it you need to flash "bl6 Froyo", because it's built for Froyo kernel only. (You cannot flash those flashable kernel zips! They are meant for the standard DEFY only. They are signed as bl5 and if you were to flash one of those, you would end up with a bootloader error, so you would have to flash the 2.3.4 sbf to get your phone back up and running...)
Other than that, CM10 is pretty much the way to go, if you ask me. Yes, it might take some time to load an app or another, but it's the most advanced ROM for the DEFY(+) so far and Jelly Bean really is the best Android version up to date. Quarx's latest nightly is the best version at the moment - the one from two days ago (September 12th). (Paranoid Android and AOKP are both based on Quarx's work, at least our (DEFY) versions)
The third choice for me would be MIUI 4.1, the one based on Jelly Bean. MIUI v4 was a nice step forward when it comes to looks, but it was two steps back when it comes to performance. v4.1 is a much better performer, but work on it has just started, so it'll take a couple of versions to polish it a bit. If you try and like Pikachu I guess you should follow Wajk's WIUI Jelly Bean progress and switch to it when you find it good enough for you
P.S. If it happens that you like Gingerbread more than Jelly Bean for whatever reason and don't like MIUI, FuZZ's CM7 KANG's were always the best for me :good:
I'd say that depends on how you want to handle your phone. If you want to just install a custom ROM once and then stick with it I can recommend CM 7.2, I had that for like half a year and everything worked nicely. It also offers lots of extra features and customization.
If you want the newest Android version I can second the above notion, try CM10 by Quarx. its a great ROM, and even though it is still work in Progress everything you need is working. This might mean that you want to update your ROM every once in a while to get the newest build and features, but this can be done easily through an app from within CM10.
As you have a Defy+ you wont need to flash any Kernel for the above, just pick the correct (Defy+) Version.
use CM10 its stable & works fine on defy+
Because of the controversy and arguments they inevitably generate, "best ROM" threads are prohibited on XDA. Thread closed.
Forgive me if I come off as a complete noob, but it's been awhile and I need a few pointers to get up to speed. A little homework and due diligence now will avoid a lot of aggravation later.
I rooted my 4G (SPH-D700), then installled:
Running Clean GB-1.0.3 (latest is 1.1.2)
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-CleanGB-gdaf5649
Modem - EI22
Firmware v2.3.5
ACSRecovery v1.0.0.5 CWM4 Based
All old stuff, I know. I stayed with CleanGB because it absolutely rocks. But it's time to upgrade, and a lot has happened since. I'm trying to work out which kernels are compatible with which ROMs, etc.
So, questions:
What is the latest stable version of Android for the Epic 4G? I've seen discussions that say it can run ICS, others that say support stopped at Jellybean.
If ICS is good, I've seen mention that ICS uses more memory, leaving less room for apps. How much less as, say, a percentage?
How do I safely move from CWM4 to the current CWM 10?
What current ROM is closest to the philosophy of CleanGB (solid and stripped of useless crap) and which kernel(s) is/are compatible with it?
I'm reading The People's ROM is a good candidate, but I'm interested in more opinions from people who've assessed several for stability.

Well we have official cyanogen nightlies. CM9(ICS) was kinda dropped when jelly bean came out. CM10 has a stable build. CM10.1 (4.2.2) has official nightlies and a monthly build. That is the most
Up to date versions of android. There are ports of paranoid android, aokp, and more. However most of those require the use of the NS4G modem and patch.
As far as modified stock is concerned, TPR would be my vote. However most new roms have changed from bml to mtd maps with a new yaffs2 filesystem. This was needed as an open source way to change the partition sizes. Data has shrunk a bit to make for a larger system partition (20-30mb). On roms like TPR this isn't needed, but makes switching between other ROMs that need more system space an easy switch.
CM will automatically convert your system to mtd and update to the latest clockworkmod. TPR may do this too, but I think the trick is to flash CM to re partition then flash TPR if you wish.
I've been running CM10.1 lately with little to no problems. Only small issue is Bluetooth is a bit flaky. This is Google's fault for changing the Bluetooth stack on 4.2.2. All that said, read the recent stickies and the ROM thread OP's and you should be fine. One thing... The only way to go back to bml from mtd is to Odin back to stock. Not a big deal, since bml ROMs are almost nonexistent these days.
Hope that gets you started

Ok, BML and MTD - this touches on an area of uncertainty. I gather from the CleanGB changelog notes that 1.0.3 runs on MTD.
I checked the CM Wiki walkthrough for installing CM, found it assumes an install from stock and links to a BML version of CWM 5. I can revert back to stock if I have to, but ideally I'd like to minimize steps to minimize the chances of something going haywire. Here's where it gets interesting...
As noted, I have ACSRecovery v1.0.0.5 installed. While I was looking at my options today, I installed ROM manager and found it supports CWM 5.0.2.7.
I've created backups using both, but to date I've never needed to recover from a backup. Are they both compatible with MTD? I'd hate to get in a position of having to fall back and find my backups are useless.
If there are no compatibility issues regarding MTD, then I'm good with using CWM 5.0.2.7 to flash CM10.1?
You will have problems with your backups if you go with a CM 10+ rom as changes to the partition sizes make things difficult. Odin may be necessary to go back.
Most of the newer roms have the option to use the Nexus S 4g modem, but it is not a requirement. Some, myself included, get better results over the stock modem.
And don't use ROM Manager. It doesn't always play nice with newer roms on this phone.
