[Q] Is it even worth waiting? - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there actually any reason to be excited about the eventual Froyo update if I've come to like ADW launcher over the Sense UI? What I'm asking is if I'm going to just install ADW again anyways is the update going to do anything that Cyanogen, Araray (sincerest apologies if i got either name wrong) or any of our other brilliant developers can't deliver? BTW if i posted this in the wrong section... i readily offer my knuckles for slapping and thread for deletion.

They're just about to release froyo when we already are talking about gingerbread 2.3
We are ahead! Wohoo
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App

Short answer... no... we have cm7 first builds (gingerbread) now and everything works, if you already like adw more than sense ui then froyo is not gonna bring anything new to the table. Its just too late.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App

The only thing that an official froyo update will really do for us is fix our current froyo-sense ports, and give us a new stock ROM to play around with. Froyo will bring app moving, market auto updating (brought by market 2.2.7 anyway) and a couple of other big performance things to the stock ROM, but overall nothing is going to be new. Frankly, if we have nightly builds of CM7 already, we don't need a froyo update. CM7 is surprisingly functional for the second nightly build, with only a few things not working correctly. With gingerbread out there, it's almost not worth it for T-mo to drop an update.

Thank you for the replies. I think I may just have to try out the nightly. Shame the candy store burned down before this kid could ever get his hands on any... well thirty three year old kid but you get the analogy.

I thought when the froyo update finally comes out we are going to get wifi calling? That to me is a big plus. Since I assume that CM will incorporate it into the rom.

Yeah, it'll come for sure. But it'll be available in custom ROMs way before HTC get around to releasing it.

Its a good thing though dude, its nice to know there are people dedicated to the cause
2.3 will come firstly as a port from the nexus, and then within 1-2 months we will see an updated G2 and sense rom, then at the end of 2020 we will see it drop on the SGS, lol lol ;P
And as soon as the gingerbread source code is released, Cy will get to work on CM7

This is just a rumor, but Phandroid has a rumor that says 2.3 could be unvieled as early as today (12/6). I don't think it'll happen, but I have my fingers crossed.
I know Moto Droids running vanilla Android and the Nexus 1 always get updates first because they're running vanilla Android. We're running Vanilla Android, so maybe we'll get to be apart of the "hahahaha, we got it before you did, sucker Sense/Motoblur/Touchwiz users!" group?

That statement is absurd. The N1 has only had ONE UPDATE!!! At least only one MAJOR update... it shipped with 2.1, it is currently 2.2 (2.2.1 is minor, hardly counts.)

That's only half of the statement, friend. The point I was trying to make was that the phones with vanilla android get the updates sooner than all the other UIs. Since we run vanilla android like the nexus 1 and the moto droids do, we should be getting 2.3 the same time they do which, historically, has been far sooner than everyone else.

G2 is not pure Google/Stock/Vanilla/Virgin whatever you want to call it.
While yes, the G2 is the closest thing to Vanilla FroYo available (aside from the Nexus Series of course, which is 100% stock), it isn't entirely pure. There is another thread pertaining to this, anyways the guesstimate is that we will get it a month or two after the Nexus S is released, which is December 16th in the United States.
BTW, I love my G2, I think it's the sickest phone available right now, but at the same time, it isn't fully stock. Read Cyanogen's blog about it.
It's going to take some time to get it just right for the G2. In any event, I can't wait!
I'm guessing Feb. 2011, although after having played with the SDK's Emulator a bit, there aren't any DRASTIC changes in Gingerbread, which means less dev. work, so who knows, maybe even sooner! Definitely after X-mas.

Oh I know we're not running 100% Vanilla, but we are running it without a 3rd party UI put over top so I'm sure we'll get it much sooner than Sense, Motoblur and Touchwiz phones do.
I think it'll be sooner than February (my money is on a January release, as the Nexus S is being released with 2.3, so 2.3's release will be the day the S comes out). It shouldn't take that long to toss together 2.3-compatible versions of the apps that makes ours different from a 100% pure device. Of course, it's all up to Tmo in the end.
I'm waiting until 2.3 update before I root. I was waiting for CM 6 stable but with 2.3 just around the corner, it's worth waiting for. I'd like to see what it's like before I go rooting around in my phone. Pun squarely intended.

[Q] Anyone working on a Gingerbread ROM with Sense?

I was just curious if anyone had started development on a GB ROM with Sense baked in? I am trying out OMGB right now, and am LOVING the speed increases, but I am also missing Sense like it were my first born child.
Thanks in advance.
Judging by how efforts to make a Sense+2.2 build for the Droid Eris have been going (there's no official 2.2 for the Eris), I'd have to say that it's going to be a while if it happens. They're doing a good job, but the progress has been slow.
Unless the differences between 2.2 and 2.3 are much smaller than between 2.1 and 2.2, it'll be virtually impossible until an HTC device releases with 2.3 and Sense. Even then, it'll be a challenge.
Skyraider Ginerbread
Really looking forward when a skyraider gingerbread rom arrives one can only hope X..
Porting Sense itself is pretty much impossible. HTC has all the Sense apks deeply tied into the framework. It'd be rather ridiculous to try and extract everything.
I believe a team tried it, and I'm not sure what happened, but I don't see Sense apks floating around, so I assume they failed.
What they ARE doing now is porting the full ROM. Porting an entire Sense ROM to work on another device is a lot easier.
So, to answer your question, you will not be seeing Sense ported to GB. Instead, you will see a 2.3 Sense ROM in its entirety being ported.

That's what I was originally hoping for as well, but I did some searching through his thread, and someone had already asked him about that. He said that he didnt believe the benefits were worth his time at the moment, and that he would rather work on integrating the new Sense into his existing Froyo rom. Personally, I have found GB to be much faster, but that is just me. Also, the built in SIP stack has the potential to be nice, if I planned on staying with this ROM long enough to get me a VOIP account.
Short, simple and to the point.

It kind of makes sense though (no pun intended) for it to launch with 2.3. The Nexus S launched with 2.3, and I'm sure that all higher-end devices in 2011 will be trying to launch with 2.3 as well to keep the competition level. That, and 2.3 on VZW's 4G network would (hopefully) help to level the playing field against *faster* networks like T-Mobile's *4G* network. XD
When is the incredible HD supposed to come out anyway? I plan on holding off on a 4g phone for awhile to enjoy my unlimited data but I'm curious.

The only official word we have received is that they would be showing some devices off at CES, and are planning on releasing up to 6 LTE handsets in Q1. They have said they would have a 4g Moto device in February, and there have been some leaked pics of the Mecha/Thunderbolt/DInc HD, HTC Merge, as well as a Samsung 4g device floating around. Some are speculating that with all the leaks, as well as a site put out there by HTC saying basically that they were first in 4G for Sprint, TMobile, and will be again, that they will show off the devices and at least one, likely the DInc HD will be available as soon as the next day. So I guess that is my long way of saying, hopefully Jan 7.
T-Mobile is not 4g no matter how much they want to think they are
Sent from my Htc Incredible using XDA App
If I recall correctly neither is Verizon LTE or Sprints WiMax. 4G is the second gen LTE and WiMax.
But I want a IncHD so bad. Not even for the not even close to 4g speeds. Seeing as we only just got 3g where I live 2 or 3 years back.
You are both correct, and incorrect. Originally whatever group gets to decide what is the fourth generation said that only the second generations of those technologies were truly 4G, however; now, according to one of the sites I check regularly (I cant remember if it was Gizmodo, TechCrunch,Engadget or all of the above), that group has loosened up a bit and said basically, It is not really 4G, but it kinda is, so we dont care what you call it.
Edit:
Here is that article.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/18/itu-capitulates-admits-that-the-term-4g-could-apply-to-lte-w/
What happens if you take the sense apks from a sense rom, put it in a 2.3 rom, sign and flash? force closes? boot loops? ill try it some day but i have stuff to do for now
Any further update on this question? I know that there are a lot of frankenstein roms out there with aspects of Gingerbread thrown in with the Z Sense 2.2 ports, ie. icons, keyboards, je non se quoi. But I'm certain that there must be some further action that has been taken on an actual GB w/ Sense 2.0 rom.
At the very least, someday soon there should be a stock rom update that can be ported (if the DInc doesn't miraculously get it near the same time that the new 4g devices receive it or debut with it)
There has been a lot of dev's trying to get gingerbread and sense to work but no luck yet....HTC hasn't released a cdma phone with gingerbread yet so its hard to do from scratch

Any chance we'll see a newer version of sense with the official 2.3 update?

Does any one think we'll see it? I don't think we will.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If/when the update comes, I'm sure it'll just be sense 1.0. I seriously doubt HTC or Verizon are interested in giving us extra features on a 1.5 year old device, they'd much rather we upgrade.
Not to mention, the leaked GB update was sense 1.0, which I'm assuming would be a decent indication of what we'll see.
it is possible that we could see 2.1 with elements of 3.0 but it is not likely most likely it will be 1.0.
I would be expecting something a lot like a Z rom personally.

Yeah but the Desire has a lot less storage than the Incredible. That is why they got a "dumbed" down version of sense right? It's still very unlikely though since the Evo didn't get a newer version of sense.

I don't think we'll get gingerbread, but anyways. I don't think it will have sense 2.1 (if we get an update to sense, that's what we'd get) Mainly because they just aren't gonna bother with that. It's a rather old device, and a lot of the people who bought it are now already or coming up for an upgrade. The problem isn't our phone can't handle it. our phone can handle sense 3.0 well. But don't even think about getting that. The sense 2.1 roms are considered the lower sense roms that perform so well, it would actually probably overall perform better. Hell for an example, they put 2.1 on the wildfire s, go look at it's specs and tell me our phone couldn't run it stock. I'm just saying, we won't get it, even though we easily could.

Why would they? Then you have no reason to upgrade your phone. Root you phone and do it yourself, there are plenty of good/stable sense 3.0 GB roms available

as i said in the last thread, we, will not be seeing GB on the dinc any time soon, the phone was EOL'd in march, and if they give us that then we have no official reason to upgrade. Verizon, as a buisiness, does this to get people to buy newer phones, they tried it with the continuum, however that got froyo thanks to inmuts down in legacy playing around with the fascinate kernal.
i am on buisiness gingersense 3.0, not a very big fan of 3.0, but i LOOOVE the 3.0 lockscreen. (i can turn on the phone and get right to making a quick phonecall or snapping a pic if i need too)

It's nice for dev's to work on the official updates rather than leaks/ports, though.
True, although I use the gingersense leak for my roms and it is smooth as butter.
I doubt we see anything more than 1.0, but its not really an issue with all the ports out now. Would be curious to see if a dev can take the update and load 2.1/3.0 items into it though.

Virus roms on epic?

I'm coming from the evo side of the market, and i really like the synergy, virus roms,.... Especially the eternity tom on the 3d
Any idea if the team is planning on making roms for the epic? Or are they strictly htc fans?

I've noticed that development for this device is alot slower, if you will, compared to the Evo and Evo 3D. Actually, I don't agree; the e3d took about a month to get permanent root; this device was rooted a few days after release..
Now, the release of lots of custom roms is slower than the e3d, but I am sure 30 days from now, this will be corrected.
Sending some emails to your favorite devs asking them to develop for this is probably a good idea too!

Actually, I dont agree
After the evo 3d was unlocked that same day the forum filled with roms. So you have to take into account the time that the evo 3d was ABLE to flash roms and count from there to compare not go from the day it was released. There were no roms for the evo for like a month because there was no s-off and no way to flash roms hence development was slow. But the day revolutionary was released there was at least 10 roms posted in the first 48 hours after. With our epic touch we were able to flash a couple of days after launch. So in comparison we have a lot less roms for the amount of time we were able flash compared to the # roms the evo 3d had in the same amount of time after it was able to flash roms.
I do agree development seems slower. I think another reason why it may be is because a lot of people used their upgrades to upgrade to the evo 3d and cant make the switch yet because it would just be too costly. But once we see the price drop and/or used units going for sale on ebay and CL this will make the device more available to devs who want the phone but right at this moment it's not feasible to get the phone

out of curiosity, how quickly was a stock rom available for the Evo3D?
I'm the type of person that doesn't make any changes unless I can revert back, I didn't root until the stock kernel was available.
also I think that part of the reason development may be a bit slower is that this phone is so much better stock than anything else stock.
Stock + root on this thing is already better (IMO) than any other phone with any other rom.
AOSP and CM7 will be the first roms to be really worthwhile.
On a side note, I'm also a huge fan of Virus.
I think a stock rom was available a day or so after the evo3d was rooted; its hard to remember, because things happened so fast after root with that phone.
Good point about how awe sum this phone is with out root; I was going to root it the first day, but, frankly, after reading all the little quirks people were having initially after rooting, and, the lack or really interesting roms or cm7 right now, I have chosen to wait as well
Lets hope Virus/Myn/Leosright, and Aanikam, and some of the other folks with E3D's get their hands on this phone, or, at least decide to do some roms for it...
No disrespect to the folks that have made the currently available roms/kernels..

I want to say that the official RUU was out before the evo was unlocked but I'm not 100% sure so dont quote me on that. The day my evo 3d was delivered was the day revolutionary was released. So we have been able to flash stuff for about 2 weeks now. In the first two weeks after the evo was unlocked and able to flash there was tons of roms and tweaks (only a few kernels though). So in the first two weeks both phones were flashable there was considerably more development on the evo 3d. I do hope it picks up though I'm waiting for cm 7 so I hope someone from CM picks this phone up so we can get a CM 7 build, if not I'm running it stock until then with adw ex

Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Mine is, running several different roms. I still have both and it's very noticeable but I am on the stock kernel still. I have no doubts this one will be faster once it's dug into a bit more. While the Samsung gets a better Quad the HTC is much more snappy/peppy.
I haven't tried Zedo's kernel yet though so not sure if it's making a speed difference. There are issues he is still working on with that one. I'm waiting for that one to get all fixed up.
With our epic touch we were able to flash a couple of days after launch. So in comparison we have a lot less roms for the amount of time we were able flash compared to the # roms the evo 3d had in the same amount of time after it was able to flash roms.

It wouldn't hurt to take into account that this phone is just a mere 2 weeks old and a lot of people are still waiting to receive theirs as they are in a backorder queue. When the 30 days is up, we'll have a better idea how the development will be. It takes time to get developers to a phone, you can't expect them to run straight to Sprint and buy the phone on release day.
It's also worth taking into account that the Evo 3d was the first actually upgraded Hardware platform that had been released with Sprint in almost a year. In that respect the evo 3d had an advantage as their were a lot of users ready to jump ship to a new phone.
It's too bad that Samsprint couldn't get this phone out sooner to be on par with the evo 3d launch. That would have been a site worth seeing and I dont think you would see such heavy development for the 3d, expecially since it shipped with a locked bootloader.

Where is miui & cm7?

Coming from the og evo to this makes me sad ,theres is very little roms or tweaks for this device and most have more problems than the stock does.Wish i could port roms myself but i dont even know where to start.
Wish list:
-Working miui rom
-working cm7 rom
-working sense 3.0 or 3.5 rom
I already know 3 people that have already sold this phone cause of los and countless other minor annoying issuses but mainly no real dev support or even a sign of anything good coming any time soon.i know these things take time but this phone has the worst reception of any sprint phone i have owned to date so its hard to stay positive.Me my wife and 2 other ppl i know have all the same issues so i know its not my handset and we live in nyc where service was great before this phone.im doing my best to hang in here and not go back to my evo.I love everything about my gs2 with exception of cell reception and 3g data speeds and 4g is truly pointless.Anyone know any updates on my wishes?
Can't put a sense rom on this device and Miui is based off CM7. The CM team will be getting our device shortly (if they don't have it already). And Teamwin now has an Epic Touch and they're working on their recovery for it. Samsung cdma devices always make slower progress with development. People either have to be patient or move on.

How long did it take the Evo4g to get ASOP ROMs after release?

Almost 2 months (6+ weeks if I recall) until we had CM6 RC1...
...Spoiled EVO4G scener who got in well after release I'd wager.
I had that phone on release day rooted in the RadioShack parking lot and aside from the millions of Fresh based sense roms (or themes, really) until AOSP came around the only interesting things were a smattering of cool kernels (to break the FPS cap, OC, UV, HAVS, etc)...and AOSP took almost 2 months.
OP, If you want it hack it or shut up.
EDIT: I don't mean to come off like a ****, but, a lot of us got very spoiled by the EVO4G scene...that phone was an amazing exception IRT development. I've never seen any phone accrue so much development results in such a short amount of time. I have been phone hopping ever since selling my EVO4G in June and came to terms with that a long time ago. The EVO3D is closer, but still nowhere close. There are millions of (mostly theme-based) ROMS...CM7 is coming along I hear, MIUI as well. I hated that phone, but, if you like Sense I don't know why you would get anything but an HTC. If I get an HTC and hate sense I know eventually I will be able to take it off, but, the opposite isn't anything I would bet on.
You should sell your epic touch and get a ppc6700... Just saying.

25th July 2010, 11:59 PM is when it was originally posted for the Evo. So 2 months, considering the Evo released on June 4th, 2010.
This phone has been out for 6 weeks! I'll go out on a limb here and say your expectations are out of whack dude. And no dev support? I'm sure the guys that have compiled really good kernels and ROMs already really appreciate that. I personally love slaps upside the face. I guess the guys that dev for Android find a way to block out all the BS and whiners and continue to push on for the greater good. I really don't know how they do it.
The funny thing is that the reason the EVO got so much support was it was hands down the best phone at the time.
Now Sprint has choices and with choices means less support on each device.
Just my opinion.
Once someone creates an AOSP kernel, it would help the develoment of CM7, CM9 and MUIMs.
The reason why OG EVO was so popular, because it was given to all the developers during last year Google IO. All the devs had a phone to develop on.
If you want to help, you should on work creating an AOSP kernel, its not a very easy task.
Please close this thread.

I forgot about that, yea that had a lot to do with it. As for the OP, stop whining, sell/trade your phone then, nobody cares. If your not going to contribute to the development, shut up and stand in line like the rest of us.
You smoking that crack?

Ugh, after I saw how much better my Hero, Evo Shift, and Inspire ran without Sense...I'll never buy another phone running it.
