Sounds like an SLCD screen. Use ROM Manager to install RA recovery.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Get rom manager from the market and use it to flash Clockworkmod. Then hit reboot into recovery and see if it works.

Thats what it sounds like clockwork isnt liking the slcd screen. If flashing the clockwork doesnt work. Install RA recovery that should work.

It's in ROM Manager. Last option named flash alternate recovery.

Hey guys, my phone runs MIUI and Tiamat. Every time I would hold down the power button to select recovery, it would go into hboot. And if I tried going into recovery from hboot it would just go back into hboot.
I downloaded clockworkmod rom manager and tried getting into recovery from there and still no go.
What am I doing wrong?

You have fastboot enabled it sounds like

Yup,what evil said above me,go to settings/applications/developement at the bottom you will see fastboot, uncheck it.
Add in, uninstall ROM Manager, and flash Amon Ra for your recovery

Have you tried reflashing your recovery?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app
The way they suggested to disable fastboot is for a stock system. I don't know if you can disable it that way with MIUI. I know you can't do it that way with CM7, which is similar to MIUI.
Do a battery pull, boot into bootloader, then try to go into your recovery from there.
Oh, and get rid of CWM. Flash AmonRa to your phone instead.
I encountered this today. Reflash recovery and then use rom manager to reboot into recovery.

I went into clockworkmod and reflashed recovery. It's still not doing anything right.

It's not, but that's a good one to add!
If you are still using clockworkMOD recovery, flash an older version (5.0.2.0). I had issues with the latest version not going to recovery.
Hey OP use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339654 it'll solve your problem...

HipKat I love you so much for your guide.
Thank you to everyone who took their time posting.
Sorry for bump, very sorry. I had two threads open - one for the ROM what I was going to post a question for, and this thread because it's similar to my problem. I posted a Loooooong post in here by accident, and am trying to move it to the other thread. sorry for bump
Found another solution
Hey guys,
thank your for all your suggestions and sorry I forgot about this thread as I solved my prob weeks ago.
I just flashed TWRP and had to continue to hold the volume up button after the logo and boot a second time into recovery.
I flashed Cyanogenmod and now everything works just fine.
Thanks again.

go to android development thread at top of page read the sticky notes for directions
all versions of CWM work with our t989d
easiest way to install CWM is Rom Manager from the app store
but you must root your phone first
just in case you did not know hope this helped m8

If you are flashing first time
you want the *.tar file
so you can use Odin to flash the recovery

If you install Rom Manager while rooted, go into the app, it should install the official CWM over your current install.

I loved TWRP when I was on the S3, but on the S4 it appears to be too sensitive. When I try to install a zip file and scroll down the list of folder using my finger it will enter that folder i did not pick.

Great, I'll switch back when that is fixed. Right now I am using the OUDHS CWM based Recovery cause the text is readable. The text in the regular CWM is too tiny to read, I have to use a magnifying glass to read the options

Yes, there is an issue with that since the touch screen is so much more sensitive on the S4, but it will be fixed soon. Team Win is working on it.

And no, I'd stick to a recovery that's Amon_Ra based.
It's the TN-shooter-final-v2 rom.
What recovery exactly would you recommend and can I flash from phone or do I need to use the pg....img technique?

Make sure when you see the aroma screen you choose custom install not typical, the typical has a bug, then once you choose custom hit reboot and it will reboot 3 times and take a while to load so let it sit it takes time to Finnish.
